Houston – Back Then

Recently was made aware of this site, which has old maps of Houston. The following maps have been resized in order to be uploaded, so if you can’t see a detail you want, I recommend going to the original site, where the maps are hi-resolution and unreduced.

Here’s a 1954 map:
1954_humble_houston_merged_360p_large_resized

And here’s a 1942 map. A neighbor pointed out that Fauna, a street in my ‘hood, used be called “S Houston – Garden Villas Road” as it crossed Telephone Road. Nowadays, Fauna pretty much stops at Telephone Road, and Airport Boulevard is the main artery that crosses in front of Hobby Airport.

I love old maps, I have one of Alabama printed in the 50’s that shows the Federal Hiway by the old home place on the west side of the property but it’s on the east side. The map was printed just before it became a bypass and the local politicians where still fighting over the route.

They have a courtesy car that can take me over to Willowbrook. Guess I’ll go over there and spend some money.

Good morning Hamsters. Ground mist aplenty and 73 at 6, becoming partly cloudy later with mist gone. Another hot day, well 95, but then we’ve been spoiled so far.

Houston and environs looked far different when we moved here in ’69 than now. What a treat it would be to eliminate the bad stuff from then and the bad stuff from now and combine the good stuff from both for right now. One can dream.

Thanks. She has improved. Came to find out her hospital discharge instructions related to medications was incorrect, which had her blood pressure so low we could have lost her.
We’ve also decided that the blow to the head she received in last year’s match with the grill is having some permanent repercussions. She is not very steady on her feet and her sense of taste is all screwed up, causing her to lose some of her passion for cooking. Nothing tastes good anymore to her.

I’m not sure I understand. At the Greek pm’s urging voters rejected a bailout deal. Now he has agreed to pretty much the same deal.

#8 CouchMaster: I am reminded of welfare reform, which Slick Willietwice vetoed and shut the gubmint down and then went on to sign and claim credit for “ending welfare as we know it.” This deal with Greece will be just like our deals with Mexico, both will happily repay any and all loans – so long as we give them the additional money to do it.

The Euroterds are desperate to make a deal, even if it is a bad one, so they can claim the high moral ground of ‘diplomacy.’ This same false god of diplomacy is what is going to enable Iran to get a nuke and the ballistic missile technology to successfully target NYC. Everyone with a brain knows that Greece will default on this loan as well as Iran will develop and deploy nukes – first against Israel then the USA.

Just heard a commercial on the radio that drives me nuts. A roofing company complaining about their competitors, saying that the competitors “focus on efficiency and not responsibility,” and describe how they found “28 nails and not one was on the nail line”.

That’s not efficiency, that’s speed. If the roofers were being efficient, the shingles would have been nailed on properly and quickly. Focusing on speed only, and not accuracy, would result in 28 misplaced nails. Responsibility has nothing to do with nail placement – it would be the willingness to go back and fix problems associated with improperly roofed homes.

Total disregard for the English language. Makes me crazy every time I hear it. I’m supposing these business owners are the product of public education.

    Collective insanity!

The town resident who called 911 said there were helmets with swastikas, images of Hitler and other historical Nazi items.

“I was shaking and almost vomiting,” he tells the paper. “I had to run. My grandmother had numbers,” referring to the digits the Nazis would tattoo on prisoners.

The caller complained that the Confederate items were “not authentic” and were replicas of flags and weapons.

This caller needs to put his big boy pants on and simply move along. What a wimp.

The Greek Prime Minister Tsipras tried to run a huge bluff and lost. He demagogued the financial meltdown with Greeks and dragged the out the old historical refute, Oxi !, which has deep and passionate symbolism for the Greek people. He played this as Nazi/Fascist redux recalling the famous episode of of General Metaxas refusing to allow Italian and Axis troops passage through Greek territory in 1940. The evil Germans were trying to destroy Greece once again.

The man was left with no choice. He thought the EU would back down or Merkel would cave. That’s the central event. There may be all sorts of questionable side bets and stories involving greedy money people, but those are minor side shows among the monumentally corrupt European Union.

Joel Kotkin on the “smart growth” movement on the Left to challenge the very way Americans choose to live their lives.

    Countering Progressives’ Assault on Suburbia

The obstacles being erected include incentives for density, urban growth boundaries, attempts to alter the race and class makeup of communities, and mounting environmental efforts to reduce sprawl. The EPA wants to designate even small, seasonal puddles as “wetlands,” creating a barrier to developers of middle-class housing, particularly in fast-growing communities in the Southwest. Denizens of free-market-oriented Texas could soon be experiencing what those in California, Oregon and other progressive bastions have long endured: environmental laws that make suburban development all but impossible, or impossibly expensive. Suburban family favorites like cul-de-sacs are being banned under pressure from planners.

Some conservatives rightly criticize such intrusive moves, but they generally ignore how Wall Street interests and some developers see forced densification as opportunities for greater profits, often sweetened by public subsidies. Overall, suburban interests are poorly organized, particularly compared to well-connected density lobbies such as the developer-funded Urban Land Institute (ULI), which have opposed suburbanization for nearly 80 years

#23 TP: I saw a headline on Drudge on Friday about billionaires buying up vast tracts of farm land. That story is set in Australia, however, with a few tweeks and twerks of the tax code, the same thing could happen here. If the elites can force everybody into high density housing AND control the means of food production, they win the whole ball of wax – which I think is the goal. What they fail to realize is that if this scheme ever comes to pass, the ball of wax becomes much smaller and will not perform as expected.
LImbaugh is speaking of the issue in your link now.

    RE: My #23

The local Houston branch of the Urban Land Institute is right with the program. Look who is on the advisory board – virtually every name in the industry, from Ed Wulfe to Ric Campo to Bob Eury.

This is an excerpt from a recent seminar they hosted.

Hillwood Communities, a builder of master planned communities throughout Texas, considered food a significant factor in fostering connectivity and health. Harvest, a 1,200-acre prototype development north of Dallas, is considered the next generation in master planned communities and is built around a 5-acre working farm. The community features a mix of single family and high density residential but also includes five green houses and a community garden where the head farmer teaches residents how to grow fresh, organic farm-to-table product in gardens in their own backyards.

Where LEED ratings focus on assessing sustainability of the building, we are now talking about impacting the health and wellness of the people in the space to encourage their well-being, said David Calkins, regional managing principal of Gensler. Calkins, who heads the education practice for the firm, went on to discuss the environmental magnet school James Berry Elementary in Houston which achieves design sustainability and efficiency, but is in fact “…a machine for creating advocates for the environment,” at the earliest ages of our society. The elementary school children are “growing produce in gardens at the school and taking lessons home on healthy choices in terms of food, recycling and influencing their parent’s behavior.”

Big business is not interested in anyone’s liberty. Not nationally or in your own backyard.

#32: The one I want to see is the way to “unmask” the malignent cells so that the bodies natural defenses can wipe them out. We all make cancer cells every day, usually they self destruct and if that fails then the next line of defence comes in from the body and other antibodies wipe them out. When the tumors start to grow, this mechanism has been disabled – somehow. The trick is to turn it back on and strengthen the body instead of poisoning it with chemo.

Every amazing thing you never knew about the song, Unchained Melody.

Two Jewish Tin Pan Alley songwriters wrote it for a low-budget 1955 prison movie.

    No kidding.

The song—first released 60 years ago, in 1955—has a history that, like its eponymous tune, ebbs and flows at unpredictable intervals. The song that has served as a backdrop for dances and weddings was born as a soundtrack of a more conventional variety. It’s named “Unchained Melody” not because it concerns itself with the various freedoms and captivations of romantic love, but because it was written, originally, for a movie about life in prison. Unchained, based on the book Prisoners are People, was a low-budget film released to limited acclaim in 1955. It features a scene, though, in which an inmate perches on a bed in his prison dorm and sings a song—accompanied only by a mournful acoustic guitar—for a group of his fellow prisoners: “Time … goes by … so slowly … and time can do … so much…”

You can discard your Rothschild Zionist banker conspiracy. Here is the Greek woman working for Goldman Sachs (of course) who maneuvered the Greek financing deal and made hundreds of millions for herself and her employer.

What it most liked about her seems to be the way she could magic away the country’s dismal financial position. The trade she came up with is reported to have made the bank hundreds of millions of dollars, although only Goldman knows the true figure.

Reports suggest she was paid up to $12m a year by the time she was named co-head of the investment banking group. Not that it wasn’t a stressful job. In an interview in 2005 she told the Wall Street Journal she was “your typical Type A workaholic smoker” with a “stressful schedule”.

Elderly Couple Texting – Very Romantic?

An elderly couple, who had just learned how to send text messages on their mobile phones. The wife was a romantic type and the husband was more of a no-nonsense guy.

One afternoon the wife went out to meet a friend for coffee.

She decided to send her husband a romantic text message and she wrote:

“If you are sleeping, send me your dreams. If you are laughing, send me your smile. If you are eating, send me a bite. If you are drinking, send me a sip. If you are crying, send me your tears. I love you.”

The husband texted back to her:
