We often forget and often forget to acknowledge that the people who founded this country took great risks – great personal risks – in their activities.
We’ve all seen the picture of the document, but how many have actually read it?

    When Hessy Taft was six months old, she was a poster child for the Nazis. Her photograph was chosen as the image of the ideal Aryan baby, and distributed in party propaganda. But what the Nazis didn’t know was that their perfect baby was really Jewish.

    Sheila Jackson Lee Brings Lollipops to Illegals, Says Border Crisis Not National Security Threat.

    Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) believes the border crisis is not a national security threat, despite gangsters having already been apprehended along the United States-Mexico border.
    In fact, Jackson Lee waved a bag of lollipops during a Thursday House Homeland Security Field Hearing in McAllen, Texas, and said she took bags of such lollipops to the illegal immigrant children in detention centers during recent visits.
    “This is not a national security crisis,” Jackson Lee emphasized, noting that she was not armed and did not fear for her life when visiting the children. Jackson Lee said Border Patrol agents claimed the children were some of the most “orderly” and “behaved” children they have encountered.

    Fourth of July – a date that all should celebrate. So sad that so many don’t understand what these men stood for way back when. Now, it’s a type of liberation theology – I’m liberated and you have to accept me…you neanderthal just like mharpers link. Saw the Chron online version – small block ad showing where you could go to view the fireworks, etc. – not anything else about why this is a holiday – not even from a liberal professor!

    The Declaration has long been a problem for Progressives. It not only outlines the usurpations of Liberty (as Hamous suggests in #11 above) of an oppressive Government, it establishes that it is the right and the duty of those governed to change that Government.
    As has been the case all along, and much noted here when such things occur, Progressives have a habit of redefining ideas and changing the names of things in order to make them mean what they want. Sometimes they attempt to change things basic and fundamental, like the pigs caught with paint and brushes on a ladder leaning against the barn wall changing the rules that Animal Farm will live by.
    Such is the case, I believe, here.

    The error, according to Danielle Allen, a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., concerns a period that appears right after the phrase “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” in the transcript, but almost certainly not, she maintains, on the badly faded parchment original.
    That errant spot of ink, she believes, makes a difference, contributing to what she calls a “routine but serious misunderstanding” of the document.
    The period creates the impression that the list of self-evident truths ends with the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” she says. But as intended by Thomas Jefferson, she argues, what comes next is just as important: the essential role of governments — “instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed” — in securing those rights.
    “The logic of the sentence moves from the value of individual rights to the importance of government as a tool for protecting those rights,” Ms. Allen said. “You lose that connection when the period gets added.”

    See what she did there? Government is just as important as Individual Rights, because government protects those rights. The right to Government is just as important as Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. Our understanding is that government exists only as a means to secure the rights of Life, Liberty, and Happiness.—This new interpretation asserts that we have a right to Government as well. Much in the same way as we now have a right to kill our unborn children.
    I found it interesting to note the version of the Declaration provided in Wagonburner’s OP, which is posted in Wikipedia, a source long criticized for the ability of people to make changes designed to change the actual meanings found there, and often for political purposes:

    An interesting twist on the IRS emails case.

    Under federal law, a party has a duty to preserve data that may be relevant to any actual or likely lawsuit. This duty arises from the party’s own knowledge; it is not necessary for a court to tell it not to destroy information, or for an adverse party to make such a request. The fundamental, shocking fact that is emphasized in True the Vote’s brief is this: at the time of Lois Lerner’s hard drive crash in June 2011, the IRS was already [emph in original] under a legal duty to take steps to ensure that information was not lost, and had been under such a duty for nearly a year, at a minimum. I am speaking here only of the normal requirements that are imposed on any party to a lawsuit, or potential lawsuit. Federal law probably imposes a higher duty on federal agencies, but that is a subject for another day.

    True the Vote’s brief points out that the first lawsuit alleging discriminatory targeting of conservative groups was filed by a pro-Israel group called Z Street, Inc., on August 25, 2010. On that date, at the very latest [emph in original], the IRS had a legal duty to take measures to ensure that no emails, correspondence, memoranda, notes, or other evidence of any sort that could be relevant to the case was lost or destroyed. (Congressional investigations, or other information known to the IRS, may have triggered the duty at an earlier date.) Lois Lerner’s communications would have been at the very top of the list of materials that the IRS had a legal duty to go out of its way to preserve.

    Seems like they should haul a few low to mid-level IT dudes in for testimony. People who would have very little interest in falling on a sword to protect a few high-level bureaucrats from going on an all expense paid vacation to a secure Federal resort.
    At the very least, they could find out who gave what instructions to whom and when.

    I’ve brought that up to a number of people and on the net. Why are not others making a bigger point of the fact these people were already under a court order, on top of all the statutory and regulatory obligations upon them, to fastidiously preserve anything that could be construed as relevant. A special prosecutor has a whole cafeteria line of charges to bring against Lerner and all her associates.

    It just struck me how our government is searching for places to house all these illegals and not finding places for them. I thought there were FEMA camps created for just such “emergency” situations as this. OHHHHH Thas right those are for us at a later date.

    It felt cooler and drier than usual at Chez Harp this morning, for sure. I actually worked out in the back yard for almost an hour, and it wasn’t humidity that ended my session. I was just pooped out, substituting an actual work detail for my sterile written PT exercises. I’ve got grape vine coming in from one side neighbor and poison ivy from the other side.

    There is a story up on Drudge about a woman in France stabbing and killing a teacher in her children’s pre-school. No info given about the woman. So I searched elsewhere and found this:

    The alleged murderer was Moroccan-born but had Spanish nationality, according to Spanish diplomats in France.

    It is so annoying when MSM refuses to identify the ethnicity of criminals. The Drudge story from the AP did have some mealy-mouthed mush about poverty:

    He said the larger problem for schools in his region and around France is tension over economic decline and lack of job prospects for young people, especially those from poor or immigrant backgrounds.

    Claiming it could no longer abide the Obama administration’s five-year refusal to approve construction of the Keystone XL pipeline designed to bring 830,000 barrels a day of much-needed Alberta shale oil to U.S. refineries, the Canadian government recently approved plans for a huge new pipeline and port project to ship that oil to Asia instead.
