Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year; one of the reasons I love it so much is the gnosis surrounding the holiday: the fact that there is the legend, but also some facts behind it. The feast of 1621 was actually intended to thank God for the bountiful harvest, because previously they were almost wiped out from famine! Anyway,… Read more »

The banner is sort of an homage to the “Four flags over Hamous”. American, Southern, Floridian, and Texan. I hadn’t noticed that the 13 star version of the first national flag of the CSA was used. I had meant for the 7 star version of the stars & bars to be used. Not sure why he used that one. Its… Read more »

We just returned home about and hour and half ago from Mrs. Darren’s cousin’s house. We had turkey, ham (you can guess which I chose to fill my plate with, devilled (sp?) eggs, stuffing, mashed potatoes, peanut butter pie, banana pie, cherry pie, chocolate pudding pie, pumpkin pie, and a couple others I didn’t catch while there. We ate, let… Read more »

#36 Thanks for the invite but we rarely get out of Houston. I would not even know what direction to head out to find San Leon. Sounds like a nice spot though.

#34, Okay, the flag as anticipated versus the number states that actually stood up for their rights. If you are dining at the Top Water Grill in San Leon and see a little Catalina 22 sail by flying the Burnett, Bonnie Blue, or Confederate Naval Flag/Bars & Stars, give me a shout. I’ll tack back and buy a few beers.

Well, I’m back home after stuffing myself at my sister’s house. We play Pictionary after dinner, and tonight one sister and I were in total sync. Four turns in a row – me drawing, her guessing, and two of them were difficult – resulted in the beginning of a rout. The girls’ team crushed the men. CRUSHED them! hahahahahahahahaaaa! I… Read more »

Maybe it is a Florida flag.

Well, it was a Texas-themed website where I found that one match.

Not one of the celebrated six flags over Texas, but this is one that briefly flew. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_the_Rio_Grande The Burnett (gold star on blue field) and Bonnie Blue also flew during the days of the Republic. I don’t get the Bars and Stars with a star in the center either. I think Semmes struck the seven star circle flag when the… Read more »

Hamous, I’ve been meaning to ask about the Stars and Bars flag on your blog banner. It has 13 stars and one is in the center. In online research (not exhaustive by any means), I have found only one website that pictures your particular flag. Mostly, the 13-star Confederate flag I find has all 13 in a circle. I did… Read more »

#19 Oltimer, Monday you asked if non-theists were being hypocritical by celebrating Thanksgiving. I replied, “not at all” and offered these facts. The tradition of post-harvest fall festivals predates all contemporary religions by thousands of years. A connection to the supernatural is neither sufficient nor necessary for them to happen, but I see no harm in folks making the connection… Read more »

#19 Oletimer Washington first proclaimed a day of Thanksgiving in 1789 and again in 1795. But it was Lincoln who formalized it as a national holiday with a fixed day of observance in 1863. This is a link to a great 2005 column by the always brilliant David Gelernter about Lincoln and Thanksgiving. A sample here: On that misty April… Read more »

Happy Thanksgiving all. Mugly 72 again this morning at 6, breezy from the south again, leaves whirling through the yard then going onto the driveway and some piling up against the pasture fence. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony, they may think they’re both faggots and they won’t take either of them. And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in singin a… Read more »
