Despite all our problems, Texans know we live in a good place. The business community knows it too:

A vast difference in economic performance is driving the demographic shifts. Since 1998, California’s economy has not produced a single new net job, notes economist John Husing. Public employment has swelled, but private jobs have declined. Critically, as Texas grew its middle-income jobs by 16%, one of the highest rates in the nation, California, at 2.1% growth, ranked near the bottom. In the year ending September, Texas accounted for roughly half of all the new jobs created in the country.

Even more revealing is California’s diminishing preeminence in high-tech and science-based (or STEM–Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) jobs. Over the past decade California’s supposed bulwark grew a mere 2%–less than half the national rate. In contrast, Texas’ tech-related employment surged 14%. Since 2002 the Lone Star state added 80,000 STEM jobs; California, a mere 17,000.

    Mornin’ Gang
Well I picked up my Deer Sausage yesterday, fastest processing ever. I brought an Ice Chest into work to give to the co-workers. i started this years ago and now everybody and his cousin wants Summer Sausage, so my first Deer isn’t mine. Between work the Wife’s Hen Party friends, and the Boy’s co-workers i have just enough. Fortunately Daughter’s husband has already got 1 deer and will most likely get another, maybe two more.

Bonecrusher, This past Sunday I made a big ole pot of Chili with some of last years coarse ground Bambi Burger, I still have two, 2 lb pks left. I brought some chili to work yesterday and gave a bowl to one of my guys and he said it was the best he ever had. 😉
I did get 4 pound of polish sausage and 2 lbs of jerky yesterday. I’m heading up to the lease this weekend to get MY deer.

    From the Forbes’ link:

The newly minted Lieutenant Governor, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, insists “there’s nothing wrong with California” and claims other states “would love to have the problems of California.”

    Hmmm, sounds familiar.

Here’s the only problem with the good local economy. All those imports coming here looking for work are not changing their political stripes. Look what happened to Florida when the yankees retired and migrated in. The ultimate key to success at the statewide level is to reduce or eliminate welfare payments and other social programs and encouraging the users of such services to move to a more “compassionate” state. I just don’t think our politicians would see it that was though.

    RE: deer meat

I remember when Hubby and I were poor starving college students. Someone gave us fifty one-pound chubs of deer sausage. We had no money. We had deer sausage for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Patties, casseroles, chili. Stretched with beans and over pasta.

It got us through our financial dry stretch, but it was years before I wanted to even think about venison again.

“Obama just has a different belief system than most Americans.”
    Roger Ailes;

“The president has not been very successful,” the Fox News chairman says in a lengthy interview. “He just got kicked from Mumbai to South Korea, and he came home and attacked Republicans for it. He had to be told by the French and the Germans that his socialism was too far left for them to deal with.”
    Snip~
“He’s had 3,000 press secretaries since he got into office,” Ailes says of Obama, but these days, “he’s making it harder for the press to make him look good… When the press falls in love, they fall in love hard. They’re like teenagers in love. It’s like the old Frankie Lymon song, ‘Why Do Fools Fall in Love?’”
    Snip~
He is far more sympathetic to Obama’s predecessor:
“This poor guy, sitting down on his ranch clearing brush, gained a lot of respect for keeping his mouth shut. I literally never heard an Obama speech that didn’t blame Bush.”
    Snip~
None of this is personal, you understand. Ailes says he likes Obama, who was gracious to him during last year’s Christmas party, and David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett. He recently had breakfast with Axelrod to discuss Fox’s coverage. But Ailes took an unprovoked swipe at Robert Gibbs, saying the press secretary “is a little big for his britches” and “will end up like that little sh!thead who worked for Bush”—meaning Scott McClellan, the onetime loyalist who wrote a book criticizing his former boss. Gibbs and the White House declined to respond.

I wonder if the Ten Commandments could be rewritten so as not t be the “Ten Commandments” and posted?

“Know that there is something greater than yourself. Be responsible to that power and to others. Do not take what is not yours. Do not lie, gossip, or bear ill will for or to another. Respect your body and the bodies of others. Honor those who are responsible for your care, and return the love they give you. Not only is this the right thing to do, but you will be in that position one day, and you must learn how to respect before you can fully understand it and receive it. Do not interfere in the relationships of others; want not what you cannot have. Be worthy, in all things and at all times.”

#14 Bob: If the TEN COMMANDMENTS were important enough at one point in our history to BE ENGRAVED IN STONE INSIDE THE SUPREME COURT, then obviously our Founding Fathers deemed them to be foundational precepts upon which our nation was established. If they are that important as foundational precepts (basic morality in absolute terms) then they should be visible and prominently displayed in ALL OF OUR PUBLIC BUILDINGS. Those who do not “believe” really don’t matter as what is contained on said display is irrelevant to them.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is an idiot who should be tarred, feathered, run out of town on a rail, then institutionalized.

One of his top priorities is safety (as it should be). Does this mean he wants to repair or replace unsafe roads & bridges? Revamp dangerous railroad grade crossings? Ensure railroad track is properly maintained? Ensure that ships entering our ports are safe? Require devices that disable cell phones in cars? Ensure that passenger buses and trains have appropriate safety gear installed? Ensure passenger ferries are safe and have proper lifeboats and life jackets?

Well DUH! Low-tax states will gain seats, high-tax states will lose them.

Eight states are projected to gain at least one congressional seat under reapportionment following the 2010 Census: Texas (four seats), Florida (two seats), Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah and Washington (one seat each). Their average top state personal income tax rate: 2.8 percent.
By contrast, New York and Ohio are likely to lose two seats each, while Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania will be down one apiece. The average top state personal income tax rate in these loser states: 6.05 percent.

Imagine that: Americans are fleeing high tax, union-dominated states and settling in states with lower taxes, right-to-work laws and lower government spending. Nothing sends a message like voting with your feet.

While you’re checking your facts, if you so desire, look up when “in God we trust” began appearing on coins and currency, when the pledge of allegiance was written, and when “under god” was added to it.

Then talk to me about what the founding fathers intended to do when they created our exceptional form of government, and took great care to ensure that it could not be dominated or controlled by any specific religious sect.

#22 In terms of what should be crammed down kids throats in government run schools, I strongly object to the first four. Public schools should not be political or religious indoctrination institutions, yet both wings of the political bird try to make them so.

The remaining six commandments are good, and represent some of the natural human morality that predates any form of religion by many thousands of years.

Kids don’t need to see a specific Decalogue in public schools to learn the three Rs. They can google Decalogue anytime they like, and they can do that in the public school library if they so desire.

    Bonecrusher,

Personally, I don’t mind if the Ten Commandments are displayed in the Supreme Court anymore than the sword wielding Mohammed on marble facade. The artist’s intention (and not the founding fathers) was to depict the history of the law. It seems to be a reasonable thing to do considering the purpose of the building.

Bob does have a point though. The construction of the current Supreme Court building began in the late 1920’s, which was long after all of the “founding fathers” had died.

    #23, #24 Bob and Simple: There is a question outstanding. . . . .

who and how could anyone be harmed by following what the Decalogue states??

Y’all are giving me the last 6, which can be summed up in how do we treat each other, thank you. #1,The question of acknowledging the fact (Dembski’s(?) Intelligent Design did a very convincing job of establishing it as a fact) that there is a Creator, forces all to submit that they are not the ultimate authority but HE is. #2,3 These two illustrate that there is respect that is due THE CREATOR because of who HE is, still here, what is the problem and how is anybody harmed by following the commandments? #4 HE dictates that because HE rested on the 7th day we must also, it goes back to the respect due to THE CREATOR. We benefit from resting/ceasing from work for that day both in our bodies and our minds and spirits, if the rest is not taken we suffer.
Please note that I am not “cramming down” any religion (man made set of rules and regulations/beliefs) on anyone. I am suggesting that it is a foundation of commonality for us all that has no negative side effects. An objective baseline standard; so that we do not get the big head towards our creator or our fellow man. I ask again, who and how can anyone be harmed in that??

We could try that, but it really is a very simple question; my view is that no one could be harmed by keeping all of the Decalogue. Perhaps those who actively worship the devil may perceive some harm in keeping, but in fact the harm is in NOT keeping.

Our elected leaders could do much worse than to try and emulate the leadership skills and outlook of the new President of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York.

Can you comment on the unprecedented nature of your election, and if there was any outside pressure on the bishops for whom to elect?

Bishop John Carberry was vice president and not elected president. This seems to be somewhat of a surprise.

When I received a letter that my brother bishops had nominated me, I was surprised. I don’t know how to interpret it. It was hardly a landslide election. I can remember three years ago, when Bishop Kicanas beat me for the vice president slot by one vote.

I take it that the bishops don’t like the idea of anyone being a shoo-in.

You presume that we’re sitting around thinking about these things. Most bishops are laudably absorbed in the activities of their own dioceses. When they get here, they take the election seriously.

As to an outside campaign, that wouldn’t be anything new. There’s always been some controversy surrounding the elections. I’ve felt the heel of blog attacks. The bishops bristle if they feel there’s any undue pressure from the outside.

You might interpret this as the bishops are tired of short and skinny presidents.

You gotta love a guy like that. From what I’ve seen, he is extremely intelligent, thoughtful, and faithful. He speaks with a disarming joviality while being very direct.

    Bonecrusher,

As a matter of personal choice, I would not mind reciting the 10 Commandments and if I thought the mere act of recitation of the commandments would make a measureable impact on the minds of a bunch of K to 6th graders; then I would say do it. I suspect the act would become a mindless ritual done in a robotic manner.

In the interest of full disclosure I am a 60+ adult male and it has been a little while since I have thought like a small child, although Ms Simple would take issue with that statement. I also consider myself a reasonably moral person, but not an strongly religious one, but to the best of my knowlege I have not taken part in any Satanic rites.

I do agree that some improvement is needed in the moral and ethical training in schools. There needs to be an open and adult discussion about this and every effort made to not to be seen as a method of cramming any one person’s religion down the collective throats.

I was raised in a VERY Catholic family in a community that was overwhelmingly Baptist and Pentacostal. It is amazing how much diversity exists between Christian beliefs, but I think there can be agreement and accomodations made between believers and non-believers alike. I know a lot of non-believers and I have never had one invite me to a Satanic ritual.

But then again….I may be wrong.

    Teenagers.
    Extended quiet time.

    Yeah, right.

I am packing my extra long whip and some extra chains. And some extra prayers for the kids to focus on, since many of them are not used to praying on their own for very long.

Wish me luck. Better yet, pray for me!

I have to prepare for class tonight. We are going into Adoration before one of the monstrances that the Archdiocese is sending to various parishes.

    Teenagers.
    Extended quiet time.
    Prayer.
    Reflection.

    Yeah, right.

I hope you have a big chapel. That way you can separate the little heathens.

If I have to, I’ll take ’em up in the balcony and hold their little heathen hands myself. I am going to make sure Miss All-that-and-a-bag-of-chips knows that she cannot sit with her boyfriend, too.

Those who do not “believe” really don’t matter as what is contained on said display is irrelevant to them.

I have to object to this statement. The fact that I am an atheist does not mean that the 10 Commandments are irrelevant to me. I agree with and practise most of them. (It’s been a long day so don’t ask me right now which ones those are.)

Even the few commandments that I don’t personally practise are OK by me to be posted in public places for purely historical reasons. Same reason I would have liked the bible in the Star of Hope monument in downtown Houston to be left alone…

Major Jewish Group Defends Beck Amid Soros Furor

“It is painful, troubling and disquieting to see Jewish leaders defending any actions by George Soros, someone who has shown himself to be an active antagonist of Israel and the U.S., whom he blames for the world’s troubles,” ZOA National President Morton A. Klein says in the statement.

“In light of Soros’ hatred of Israel and the United States; his continuous efforts to harm them; the absence of any subsequent remorse and feeling as an adult over the events he witnesses in Nazi-occupied Hungary as a 14-year old; as well as the fact that Glenn Beck’s comments were essentially accurate, George Soros merits no defense or sympathy from Jewish leaders,” he adds.

I don’t understand why any Jewish group would defend Soros, who has NO Jewish credentials as far as I’m concerned, over Beck neither. From my understanding, Beck has said nothing against Soros that is not factual. There may be some specific portrayals of Soros that are not entirely acurate but Glenn’s main point of Soros is dead on correct and that includes Soros declaring the holocaust years “the happiest years of [his] life”.

RE: Ten Commandments posted in schools.

Under the 10th Amendment, it is perfectly fine for Texas to legislate the Ten Commandments to be posted in schools. However, the manner in which te power of the federal government has evolved, Texas cannot do so under federal authority.

    *WHAT A REAL WOMAN DOES*

A real woman is a man’s best friend. She will never stand him up and
never let him down. She will reassure him when he feels insecure and
comfort him after a bad day.

She will inspire him to do things he never thought he could do; to live
without fear and forget regret. She will enable him to express his
deepest emotions and give in to his most intimate desires.

She will make sure he always feels as though he’s the most handsome man
in the room and will enable him to be the most confident, sexy,
    seductive, and invincible. . .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    No wait… Sorry… I’m thinking of beer.

    That’s what beer does…

    Never mind.

#36 Harper, I too am not bothered by religious symbols in public spaces, or on our money for that matter.

For the majority of kids, being in a public school is pretty much mandatory. For that reason I do not think the state should require any Decalogue (there are more than one) to be displayed there. The state far has better things to do than indoctrinate kids.

#25 Bones, I’m guessing that you are referring to Bill Dembski, a notable proponent of intelligent design (aka: Creationism) and the theory that “irreducible complexity” suggests a creator. Fine by me. I’m agnostic about how the first self replicating proteins came to be. For all I know, the Flying Spaghetti Monster did it.

To jump from such a theory to a pretty much exclusive and detailed definition of a God requires faith more than facts. There may or may not be an omnipresent/omnipotent supernatural entity out there. The way I see it, to define her is to limit her.

    As always, ymmv.
