If ya’ll decide to head on over to George R. Brown today, I will see you at the NRA convention. Look for the guy wearing a Glock tee-shirt and a TSRA cap. To stand out more I might purchase and put on something with a NRA logo. ๐

Katfish I am sure if you “upgrade” everyone here will commend you for going green and doing your part to combat MMGW.

I’ll be retiring right after THIS Guy allows or condones gun confiscation in his county.

HEADLINE: Palm Beach County sheriff gets $1 million for violence prevention unit amid questions about civil liberties, care for mentally ill
Florida House and Senate budget leaders have awarded Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw $1 million for a new violence prevention unit aimed at preventing tragedies like those in Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo., from occurring on his turf.
Bradshaw plans to use the extra $1 million to launch โprevention interventionโ units featuring specially trained deputies, mental health professionals and caseworkers. The teams will respond to citizen phone calls to a 24-hour hotline with a knock on the door and a referral to services, if needed.
/snip
Bradshaw is readying a hotline and is planning public service announcements to encourage local citizens to report their neighbors, friends or family members if they fear they could harm themselves or others.
The goal wonโt be to arrest troubled people but to get them help before thereโs violence, Bradshaw said. As a side benefit, law enforcement will have needed information to keep a close eye on things.
โWe want people to call us if the guy down the street says he hates the government, hates the mayor and heโs gonna shoot him,โ Bradshaw said. โWhat does it hurt to have somebody knock on a door and ask, โHey, is everything OK?โ โDoes anyone have even the vaguest notion that this will not be serially abused against the political enemies of the sheriff or the state? They will either be completely useless as was the case with the FBI “investigating” the Tsarnaev terrorists or they will unfairly arrest and confiscate the weapons of the conservatives, while leaving the lefties alone. I can see no good coming from this approach, based on what we have seen so far.
-
It’s long. But worth it.
Ben Domenech, at the Transom:People seem awfully down these days, especially on the political right. Itโs not hard to see why. They are underemployed or overworked. Stressed about money, family, country, culture, politics. Conservatives in particular are worried the world, if not spinning off its axis, is settling into a stagnancy, what the American elites have branded as the โnew normalโ, which will lead to a diminished future for themselves and their children. Itโs as if theyโre hanging at the top of the roller coaster, looking down, down, down.
ย
The state of affairs may lead many in this country to fall back into pessimism. But if anything, the past few months should lead them to the opposite conclusion about the nature of the assumptions of the elites. In the political sense, rewind to the conversation around the MSNBC sets over the past several months, when every talking head assumed immigration and gun policy measures would pass, dismissed the notion that the sequester would happen, and expressed confidence the American people would be fine with anything the re-elected and reinvigorated President Obama proposed.
ย
This is a reminder that the nature of those who favor human liberty ought to always โ always โ be more optimistic. Why? Because we trust the people. Belief in equality of liberty stems from the belief that the people know best for themselves what kind of lives they want to lead โ that the helpful hand of the elites is often well-intentioned, but often wrong. We believe that human nature has no history: that people are the same today as they always have been. This means they will always make mistakes, they will follow the wrong path, and they will experience the consequences of this โ but that they ought to be free to do so. We believe this because we understand that people are not unredeemable. They learn from their decisions, and they apply that knowledge to their lives, behaving in way and achieving things which confound the elites and reject the idea that the future is inevitable. Things often seem the darkest before the great awakenings begin.
ย
This is not a time to be throwing up your hands, giving in to assumptions about a diminished future, or cloistering yourself from the rest of society in some kind of monkish abandon. People forget the Copybook Headings they never learned, but experience reminds them of the truth. The dour warnings of austerity and decline on the right seem fearful and closed-minded given the challenges the nation has overcome in the not too distant past. The fall of the Soviet Union, the rise of an incredible global economy, advances in technology and science and more which were unthinkable became possible through old-fashioned human risk-taking and endeavor. The same spirit animates us and drives us to create today.
ย
The essence of American optimism is founded in a belief that the world we pass on can exceed the one we inherited. We acknowledge no limits on what we can attain. We are not prisoners of destiny, and neither are our children. This is not a uniquely American inclination, mind you, but a human one. But hereโs the exceptional part โ not all cultures acknowledge or honor it. It was here, in America, where such an experience was uniquely understood from our inception in our creed. We create, as we were created, and know all who are created have worth, born with an equal claim to life, to liberty, and to the pursuit of happiness.
ย
So remember your Reagan, conservative pessimists: โWeโre blessed with the opportunity to stand for something โ for liberty and freedom and fairness โ and these are things worth fighting for, worth devoting our lives to. And we have good reason to be hopeful and optimistic. Weโve made much progress already. So, let us go forth with good cheer and stout hearts, happy warriors out to seize back a country and a world to freedom.โ -

Surprised Hunterโs Turkey Call Brings in Bobcat.
First-time turkey hunter Bud Griffith, 44, thought the wooded area near his Kentucky farm was prime turkey territory. Problem was, so did the local bobcat population. According to The Advocate-Messenger, Griffithโs opening day hunt was spoiled in part by a confused bobcat that mistook his face for a turkey.
โI was sitting there with my back against the trees and was making the turkey calls,โ he said. Several decoys were set up a few dozen yards from where he sat with a gun in his lap. Griffith did not notice that a bobcat had been stealthily approaching him from behind, keen on a feathery meal. The hunter saw only a blur before he was hit with a swipe from the feline to his right eye, which was thankfully protected by glasses. The Bobcat turned out to be the better hunter. ๐

With this much I agree.
Here’s where it all falls apart. For the last 40 years we have steadily abandoned our “American Exceptionalism” in favor of Marxist “Multiculturalism”. We’ve embraced the very cultures that do not acknowledge this. I’m not sure it can be resuscitated (without pain). While I admire Domenech’s optimism I subscribe more to the realism of Bramanti:
Freedom and little-R republican government arenโt the norm. Theyโre a tiny, blessed anomaly. A blip of relief in 5,000 years of pyramids and gas chambers. Weโve reverted back to the long-term trend of human history โ one tribe beats other tribe and takes all their shit.

#14 Super Dave – I’ve lost count on the number of bobcats I’ve called in with a turkey call. Never had one jump on me, though. They usually get within a few yards and realize what I am. Had a few ‘yotes come running at me full speed and dropped them in their tracks before they ran into me. About 10 years ago, where I hunt in NW Missouri, there started to be an increasing number of confirmed mountain lion sightings. That’s when I started packing a sidearm. I figured if I got jumped from behind it would be easier to pull that out than try and find my shotgun that had been knocked out of my hands when a big cat pounced on me.

Drama in the White House!
BuzzFeed offers a storyline to keep an eye on in the coming months:
The nomination of billionaire Penny Pritzker to be Secretary of Commerce will import a Chicago rivalry into the Obama Administration. Pritzker and Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett share roots in their native city’s insular business community and will have overlapping portfolios of outreach to corporate America. But there is no love lost between the two women, people who know both say: Indeed, Jarrett tried to torpedo the appointment, someone she made the case to told BuzzFeed. And their tense relationship could help define the Administration’s attempts to mend ties with the business world that frayed badly during the first term. -

Interesting article from Ad Age on the 100th anniversary of the Ball Jar and canning in America. Their sales are higher than ever.
Jarden Home Brands — which licenses one of the oldest brands in America, Ball Home Canning — has released a limited-edition “Heritage Collection” line to mark the centennial of the innovation commonly known as the mason jar. A commemorative note etched onto each pale cyan glass container is marked with “100 Years of American Heritage” and the year 1913, denoting the date the Ball Brothers, a group of five U.S. industrialists, integrated the construction of the jars so it was no longer a lid made by one person and a jar made by another.

OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE NOTICE
I just took my car to Discount Tire for a routine spin balance and rotate. While they were on the spin-balancer, I noticed that 2 of the tires were out of round with no signs of cupping or other suspension disorder. The asst mgr did not hesitate, he looked to confirm that he had replacements in stock and retrieved them and installed them. One of those proved to be out of round and it was replaced as well. My total cost was $35.00 for 2 new warranty certificates.
If you need tires, Discount Tire is the only way to go. The prices are very competitive, they stand behind their product, free lifetime spin balance, rotation, air pressure check/adjust and flat fix. Pretty darned hard to beat in my world. -
I mean, seriously.

re my #51: We all respect each other (for the most part) and I am sure that we all want the best for each other. When I get great service, it only makes sense to tell y’all about it because want those I care about to get the same thing. If someone follows my advice and they get the same great service, the service provider – Discount Tire – in this case gets a reward for a job well done and the one who follows gets a reward for having a job well done, everybody wins and that is the way it should be. Word of mouth advertising is the most powerful, particularly from someone you know and trust.

Scientists have finally confirmed what the rest of us have suspected for years: Bacon, cheesecake, and other delicious yet fattening foods may be addictive.
A new study in rats suggests that high-fat, high-calorie foods affect the brain in much the same way as cocaine and heroin. When rats consume these foods in great enough quantities, it leads to compulsive eating habits that resemble drug addiction, the study found.http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/03/28/fatty.foods.brain/index.html

Good evening Hamsters. Stunningly chilly 46 and windy as all get out this morning. Could not put the trash cans out until this morning or they would have been blown over last night. Finally the wind is subsiding as the Sun sinks slowly in the west, so we shall really be cold tomorrow morning. Brr, the wind had teeth all day. May 3rd, right?
Now that is quite a Rube Goldberg multicycle thingie at the top of today’s entries. Looks like an early attempt to explain planetary retrograde motion by adding epicycles upon epicycles to account for it, which was totally wrong of course. Or it could illustrate how the Dems try to explain how they really weren’t responsible for what they were responsible for when their pants fall down and they’re caught by the truth coming out. ๐ -

Well, back from the NRA Convention, man what a zoo! There were a whole lot more people there than on opening day than 2005. I got there a little late, 10:30 and had to park several blocks away. Daughter showed up later and her husband dropped her off and went to find a place to park, he and his brother-in-law came in later. Daughter wanted to spend some time with ole dad since we don’t get to see each other often and we didn’t see the boys all day. They had a great time though, got a lot of signed posters and stuff. The goood thing about being there with an attractive blonde is that you get extra goodies, the stuff behind the counters, not just the handouts on the tables. After walking about 10 miles we left and went to Sugar Land to eat at Outback and then I took her home, got back to Clear Lake around 8.
Yup, Life is Good!! ๐ -
‘Bout Discount Tire, it is owned by one man; Bruce Halle, @ $4 Billion, the richest man in Arizona. He became successful by ALWAYS putting the customer first and by giving his Managers an Asst Mgrs a piece of the pie. He figured that if his men were happy they’d do a good job and he’d do just fine. Back in Michigan he would change out snow tires in the spring and fall for free to attract customers and started fixing flats for free when he moved south. He also closes every Sunday to give the guys a day off with their family and even closes from noon until 3 on Good Friday. Many years ago after I’d been a happy customer for a few years, the inner tube in my big wheelbarrow sprung a leak, so I took it to Discount and told the young fellow that worked there that I knew he didn’t work on these things but could he fix it? He took back and removed the tire by hand, patched the tube and brought it back to me. I asked him what I owed him and he said, nothing, but when you need tires just come back. I couldn’t even get him to take a tip.
If you have the time, I recommend this short book; Six Tires, No Plan: The Impossible Journey of the Most Inspirational Leader That (Almost) Nobody Knows. -
