Monday “Throw Open the Door” Open Comments

I had another very late work night (or very early work morning, depending upon how you look at it) last night. I have to run out this morning to the other side of town to get a part, and then early this afternoon I must run down to the San Bernard again, hopefully to sign a lease with some new tenants this afternoon. Then I have to rush back for an appointment this evening!
So, I throw open the door and invite y’all in. There’s some tea in the frig – I checked, and the newspapers are already cleared off the couch. I think there’s a little fruit on the counter, but other than that, you guys will have to bring your own. If you go out for pizza, save some for me. I may not have time to cook later….

Let’ see. Obama’s limo conked out in Jerusalem route to a tense press conference. Once there he exchanged insults with Israel’s prime minister. Then there was all them rabble rousers yelling at him and waving signs and all that stuff. He really had a bad time in Jerusalem
but then so did the last guy claiming to be the messiah.

The schizzle storm in Cyprus keeps getting worse.

    /snip
Swiftly backed by euro zone finance ministers, the plan will spare the Mediterranean island a financial meltdown by winding down the largely state-owned Popular Bank of Cyprus, also known as Laiki, and shifting deposits below 100,000 euros to the Bank of Cyprus to create a “good bank”.
Deposits above 100,000 euros in both banks, which are not guaranteed under EU law, will be frozen and used to resolve Laiki’s debts and recapitalize Bank of Cyprus through a deposit/equity conversion
    /snip
Asked about the level of losses on uninsured depositors in Bank of Cyprus, he told state radio: “The assessment is that it will be under or around 30 percent.”
The Cyprus central bank said the agreement had also avoided the disorderly default of Laiki Bank.
Among Cypriots, there was a mood of wariness about the deal.
“How long will it last?” asked Georgia Xenophontos, 23, a hotel receptionist in Nicosia. “Why should anyone believe anything this government says?”

Those with accounts over 100k euros will face a 30% seizure of thier assets. The die has been cast with this action, now the gov’t feels that it owns your money above a certain level. It used to be that all FDIC banks had a sign in front that stated “all deposits federally insured up to $250,000″ now that sign reads “all depositors federally insured up to $250,000″. What does that little change mean? It used to be each deposit, no matter where, was insured up to $250k, now each depositor is insured, and we are not told whether that includes all deposits totalled in all institutions. This could be interpreted (in the most drastic case) that a citizen may only feel “safe from seizure” if his total cash funds are under $250k. Theis Cyprus seizure has set the stage for funds seizure on a global scale, what a great time to buy gold and silver to protect what assets you may have.

    Bonecrusher,
The change from Deposit to Depositor is that the $250,000 used to be per account. Now if an account is joint owned, it is $250,000 per account owner. They also extended the types of accounts that are insured. If you want more information on the exact guidelines they are (and always have been) publicly available and your depositing institution is required to give you the summary of insurance and instructions on how to get the full information. All of this was mailed to depositors at all FDIC and NCUA insured institutions when the change was made a few years ago. Here is a link to the FDIC site where you can calculate coverage on each of your accounts:

    Moose,
I am concerned that even with the FDIC insurance, there are those in government that would forgo that minor caveat and simply grab the money. All of these odd, weird, and silly ideas have a nasty way of congealing and growing from something that once seemed menacing into an idea that seems normal or natural.
There has already been talk on the talking head circuit circus and articles written about taking a little bit out of everyone’s 401(k) and/or IRAs. That is downright scary to me. Now this whole Cyprus debacle is planting the idea that it is “normal” or dutiful to help by giving up money accrued in a normal checking/savings account.
I personally do not utilize debt anymore. That means that I save up for what I want to purchase. What if at some point in the future I sell my house and park the money in a liquid account with the anticipation that I am going to use that money plus other monies to purchase a different house? It is truly scary to think that money could be subjected to forfeiture while I live in some temporary accommodations while the wife and I debate the shades of mauve in some wallpaper.

#7 Moose: Howdy. Right now, the funds are insured up to $250K/bank. So if you have more than that and you want that to be 100% insured and remain totally liquid and unecumbered, those excess funds have to be in a seperate bank, not a seperate branch but a different bank altogether. All that it would take to have the scenario I described is a small amendment to an unrelated bill inserted at the last minute for one of those midnight passage sessions. No one would know, other than the perps, about it for several weeks when the full text of the bill is published AND someone goes through it and finds it. I have no illusions that the evil miscreants in the beaurocracy haven’t already planned for exactly this event and are waiting to make it happen. It may not even happen via congress, it could be a simple rule change, making the discovery even more difficult until it is too late.
Particularly with the type of person associated with the current admin, I can not imagine a level below which they will not stoop, law be damned.

  9. Bonecrusher Avatar
    Bonecrusher

further to #8 TexMo: The idea has already been floated (and quickly shot down) to nationalize all the IRA and 401k plans, so that they will be protected (if you can believe that crap) and to make it fair. As distasteful as it is to consider, our current admin is nothing but a bunch of Chicago style thugs and nothing is off the table for them, including an EO to simply seize all the funds above a certain level.

    Bone and TexMo,
So go with a privately insured institution. By the way, I don’t think you really understand how the FDIC insurance works, since it would never, and has never been intended to cover government confiscation. It is only insurance against the failure of the bank. It is a government insurance policy that the bank is required to purchase that says if I go bankrupt, depositors get at least this much of their money.

#11 Moose: I understand how it is advertised, your average Low info Voter, thinks the money is safe and it is not. Even if they do not seize it outright, it will be devalued (by virtue of monetizing the debt/deficit via the fed) so the net effect is going to be the same, a loss of purchasing power. The big house of cards, which is the global debt, is about to collapse. The Euro is going to fail because non of the countries participating in the scheme of a unified currency are operating in the black, with the possible exception of Germany. Don’t forget the $300 TRILLION of outstanding Credit Default Insurance policies with 0 collateral to back them up. My understanding is that the total global product is only about $60 trillion/year.
I think the DHS is buying up the ammo because there will be a seizure of funds and they are wanting to limit the ability of the citizenry to fight back. I believe that they actually want an armed uprising so that they can institute martial law and JugEars can stay as emperor forever. We are in uncharted territory and there is nothing that is “off the table.”

And just an observation about those particular banned sites:
I think we ignore them at our peril. I have seen many stories on that site that really were way ahead of the MSM. As always with any story on the web, due diligence is imperative.
Way too many times I have followed stories early in the cycle that broke in alJezeera and some Farsi news services (Google Translate is your friend) quoted them, caught the expected flack from the blog denizens poo pooing AlJazeera etc only to find them quoting the same stuff a week later when it was supposed to be fresh news here in the states.
Moral of the story is keep your friends close and your enemies closer and always check to see what the other guys are doing.

I recall JugEars stating that he wanted a domestic force as large and just as well equipped as the US Military. Why does DHS need to hire an additional 200,000 people? What are they going to be used for if not as “Brown Shirts?” This is the only reason that makes even a litte sense for the purchase of so much ammo and equipment.

Good evening Hamsters. Another cold night on the way, and it will likely beat the 37 of this morning presuming the wind finally dies down, which a quick trip outside just confirmed it did. And here I thought I had folded the old sheets used to cover plants for the last time this winter season, but out they come again tonight. Most of the plants are on the back porch with some at its edge or up against the garden room windows. That way I won’t need all the sheets.
Desmond, one of Edd Hendee’s regulars, called the show this morning to report he had made a weekend drive toward and around LaGrange and found ammunition easily available in rural communities. Sorry, but I don’t recall whether he found a great variety of sizes though.

    27 Bonehead,
It may be a trivial point, but the “Brown Shirts” (aka Sturmabteilung or SA) were actually paramilitary and not part of the German government. Ironically, once Hitler seized power the first thing he did was decimate the entire SA organization in a 1934 blood purge known as the “Night of Long Knives”.
The DHS is not paramilitary, but rather a part of the Federal Law Enforcement that was created during the Bush-II administration to better fight the threat of terrorism. (Snicker – Snicker)

  33. Bonecrusher Avatar
    Bonecrusher

It may be a trivial point,

Yes, it was trivial. The issue is that there is a heavily armed and equipped arm of a quasi-constitutional agency and the head of that agency is not answering questions. Given the things that this admin has already done and what they have promised to do, like FUNDAMENTALLY RESHAPE THE USA, I do not trust them to abide by any law other than that which furthers thier own ends. I do not give them the benefit of the doubt that they have good intentions, I do not give them the benefit of the doubt that they will be directed in Constitutionally appropriate ways, I do not give them the benefit of the doubt that this force will not be used against their political enemies. Remember, a “terrorist” is anyone they say it is. If you want to split hairs on which end of the Titanic went down first, be my guest, it still doesn’t change the overall fact that the ship sank.

Jimmie Carter created FEMA in order to respond to natural and man made disasters, to include nuclear war. Ronald Reagan didn’t turn it into an agency that thought it needed two billion rounds of ammunition and a couple thousand APCs to do its job. In fact the only military component to the whole thing was a few dozen comm weenies like me armed with 1911’s to face a a post-nuclear apocalyptic world. When Bush was in charge of this thing, it was mainly a bunch of rent-a-cops being wissholes in the airport. Now we’ve got a bunch in there that seems to think the freaking Department of Education needs a SWAT team and 200,000 rounds of ammunition.
The freaking Germans always had a military. It took Hitler to turn it into something entirely different.
But you’re partially right. The DHS is more like the SS than they are the Brownshirts.

Today is the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread in Israel and for those who follow the calendar dates, for those in the Western world who use the moon to determine the date, it was yesterday. In the western world, the feast days are usually a day ahead of Israel time because the moon has more time to “convert” to the next phase. The message for this season is to get the leaven (man made doctrines) out of the house and replace them with those from Heaven. In Scripture, leaven represents doctrine, not sin. As doctrine can be good or evil, it makes sense that Messiah would state ‘the Kingdom of Heaven is like leaven. . . .’ and ‘beware the leaven of the pharisees’. May you all be blessed in getting the man made doctrine out of your houses and lives and replace it with that which comes from heaven.

Could this be coming to the USA?

HEADLINE:Cyprus bail-out: savers will be raided to save euro in future crises, says eurozone chief
The new policy will alarm hundreds of thousands of British expatriates who live and have transferred their savings, proceeds from house sales and other assets to eurozone bank accounts in countries such as France, Spain and Italy.
The euro fell on global markets after Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the Dutch chairman of the eurozone,

announced that the heavy losses inflicted on depositors in Cyprus would be the template for future banking crises across Europe.

“If there is a risk in a bank, our first question should be ‘Okay, what are you in the bank going to do about that? What can you do to recapitalise yourself?’,” he said.
“If the bank can’t do it, then we’ll talk to the shareholders and the bondholders, we’ll ask them to contribute in recapitalising the bank, and if necessary the uninsured deposit holders.”
Ditching a three-year-old policy of protecting senior bondholders and large depositors, over €100,000, in banks, Mr Dijsselbloem argued that the lack of market contagion surrounding Cyprus showed that private investors could now be hit to pay for bad banking debts.

So the bank used to be able to socialize the losses and privatize the gains, now when the bank makes a blunder and loses money it can raid the depositors accounts to make up the difference. This will hit every depositor over 100KEuros.
In the USA, the sum total of a depositors account is federally insured up to $250K, if the bank goes belly up, what happens to the excess? If the banksters in charge make risky investments or loans with the deposits on account ans suddenly find themselves insolvent, are they simply going to seize the funds (or a percentage therein) over $250K?
