    Joke of the day award:

Pelosi: Congressional pay cut undermines dignity of the job
By Mike Lillis – 02/14/13 06:37 PM ET
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that she opposes a cut in congressional pay because it would diminish the dignity of lawmakers’ jobs.
“I don’t think we should do it; I think we should respect the work we do,” Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol. “I think it’s necessary for us to have the dignity of the job that we have rewarded.”
The comments were made in the context of the looming sequester, which would force across-the-board cuts affecting most federal offices, including Congress. With lawmakers nowhere near a deal to avert those cuts, federal agencies are bracing for ways to absorb them with minimum damage to programs and personnel.

    Another teacher that shouldn’t.

Professor Stephanie Wolfe criticized Fox News in her syllabus and told students they weren’t allowed to use Fox News as source material. It is reported that in the class guide, Wolfe told students, “The tagline Fox News makes me cringe.”
“Please do not subject me to this biased news station. I would almost rather you print off an article from The Onion,” Wolfe wrote [West Liberty University in West Virginia].

Parents have complained, and the university doesn’t like her stance. WLUWV also made the point that she is a “temporary” teacher, just filling in for someone else.
As a teacher, to restrict ANY news source as research material doesn’t make sense. If it’s a crap source, the student should be able to determine that. The student should be able to defend their points, not just regurgitate sound bites.
This teacher needs to be handed her papers and given a job at McDonalds. That’s about her level.

Not sure how to process this statement from TBO:

Barack Obama said Thursday that he’d like to get rid of pennies, as they cost more to make than they’re worth. He said, “Any time we’re spending money on something people aren’t going to use, that’s something that should change.”

I suppose it would depend upon the course of study, but it is apparent that a lot has changed since I was first in College. The professors did not accept indirectly attriibutable sources such as the Encylopedia Britannica. I suspect that they would have a fit over Wikipedia and Fox News today.
The gold standard was a directly attributable source and if it was opinion, then you had to identify it in your paper, which only happened on the Liberal Arts side of the campus. Engineering Papers had a higher and tougher standard. Opinion and “Belief” were not acceptable, but this made for some pretty dull reading.
Personally, I would not accept Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, or any of the other video-blogsphere outlets as acceptable sources. They are good examples of bad examples though.
    Simple

It depends on the topic at hand. If you’re writing about recent events in the Middle East for example, then news outlets of one stripe or another are your only option, unless you plan on going there yourself.
If you’re writing about inducing an electrical current in a wire, it’s fairly straightforward to look up a book by Faraday.

  21. Tedtam Avatar

    TBO shows his arrogance again:

This was really weird. Barack Obama thanked Pope Benedict XVI for “our work together” over these last four years. (What work?)

“On behalf of Americans everywhere, Michelle and I wish to extend our appreciation and prayers to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. Michelle and I warmly remember our meeting with the Holy Father in 2009, and I have appreciated our work together over these last four years. The Church plays a critical role in the United States and the world, and I wish the best to those who will soon gather to choose His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI’s successor.”

Yeah, I ask the same question – WHAT work “together”? From where I sit, TBO’s done everything possible to undermine Catholic beliefs and authority.
Words fail me. Absolutely fail me.

  22. Tedtam Avatar

    Simple, I see your point.
But if that were the standard, she should ban all news networks, not just Fox.
And I still stand by my statement – a student should be able to defend what he writes about, including being able to justify the sources used. If a news network were “second hand,” then the student should be able to support the corroborating sources. It’s all something that needs to be learned, that ability to discern truth from lies, statistics from damned statistics.

#17 TT: This is one of the most salient points made in your linked article:

At the end of 2010, in a special session, the Illinois Legislature passed a 67% hike in its corporate and personal income tax. The state is struggling with a structural deficit and its credit rating was recently lowered. The state now has the worst credit rating in the country. A number of businesses have floated the idea of leaving the state. A move by State Farm, however, would devastate the downstate economy.

Free people vote with their feet and wallets. Start being abusive in your taxation and people will relocate to a more friendly environment. The idiotic clueless libs can not seem to understand this basic fact. As a case in point, the blind former gov of NY stated, after Limbaugh left as a result of the latest tax increase, that if that was all that it took to get Limbaugh out of NY he would have raised taxes sooner. The revenue that has been subsequently lost to NY as a result of people leaving NY due to punitive taxes does not seem to enter the intellectual equation.

  24. Hamous Avatar

I suspect that they would have a fit over Wikipedia and Fox News today.

Of course they would. Yet they would readily accept sources from ABC/CBS/NBC/CNN/MSNBC and probably even al Gorezeera, because they are all part of the “Progressive” government/media/higher education propaganda machine. We see the collusion on a daily basis. A recent example is Sen. Rubio’s “career-ending” drink of water being plastered all over the news while Sen. Menendez’s diddling of underage Dominican prostitutes is not even mentioned. There are demonstrably hundreds of similar cases where so-called news outlets cover for “progressives”. As Brother Phil routinely points out, they are clearly soul mates to Goebbels media. They don’t even try and hide it anymore.

Personally, I would not accept Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, or any of the other video-blogsphere outlets as acceptable sources.

You’ve been bamboozled. Of all the cable news networks, only Fox (and I’m speaking of the hard news reporters, not the screaming commentators) routinely asks the hard questions, regardless of who’s in power.

That’ll make Hubby happy. Oh, and I have my Southwest Sauce from HEB. Won’t make my tacos without it. Love that stuff. Hubby doesn’t like breakfast for dinner, so I can’t fix pancakes or eggs tonight. (I guess that’s his OCD bit. I made pancakes for dinner one night – we used to do that all the time growing up – and he almost freaked out on me. He just could not comprehend it.)

Catholics abstain from eating meat (animals with four legs and fur) on Fridays during Lent. We also abstain and fast on Ash Wednesday & Good Friday.
It can get kind of strange – you can’t have a burger, but you can have the seafood platter.
I’ve tried (unsuccessfully) to get Yellow Hair to go for hot dogs on Fridays on the grounds that pig lips and snouts are not actual meat, but she’s not buying it.

  45. Tedtam Avatar

According to the website, young leaves are best. If using older leaves, they need to be boiled well. Curly dock is toxic to farm animals, probably because of the oxalic acid which needs to be removed – too much can cause gastric problems and kidney stones. The stems are supposed to be usable, too.
Last year, I cooked some sow thistle leaves. Hint: use lots of seasoning.
I figger, if they’re gonna grow in my yard (especially as I move Mirkwood dirt around), I may as well benefit from them.

Pull out the tissues. The teachers’ union got voted out of a public school when the parents took advantage of a “parent trigger” law to take over their failing school.

The Los Angeles Board of Education signed off on a parent-led plan to turn a failing public school over to a private charter company this week — the city’s first use of the controversial “parent trigger” law.
    /snip
The Los Angeles-area teachers union, which strongly opposes parent trigger, released a statement criticizing the board’s decision.
“We believe parents do not want a private charter corporation to take over 24th Street Elementary, which is exactly what is happening … as a result of Parent Trigger,” the statement read.

The parents didn’t want it? Then why is it happening? Why did they work so long on the charter paperwork?
    Translation from unionspeak:
“We are bitterly disappointed that these ign’ant parents don’ unnerstan’ what we’s trying to do heah with the chillens. We knows better than these parents what the kids need. The parents aren’t trained to indoctrinate, I mean, eddicate, their own chillens. They should just step back. We’s mo’ impo’tant than they are. And if they fire us, who’s gonna pay our pensions? While the harshest punishment, hanging and drawing and quartering, is often thought of as peculiar to England, it was more common in the Papal States. The last to be killed that way in England were some Jacobite officers in 1745. The sentence was imposed  on several Chartist rioters in 1839 but they were given the option of transportation to Australia, which they accepted.  When the pope regained possession of the Papal States in 1814, hanging, drawing and quartering was imposed eleven times until it ended in 1817.  For particularly heinous crimes, crushing the head with a mallet, the “mazzatello” continued until 1870.

Further to my #62: Today on his program Limbaugh stated that even if the sequester kicks in, there will be no actual cuts in spending (in the real world) only reductions in the rate of growth.
I would like to see an immediate real-world freeze on gov’t spending at current levels to start, then cut (real world) 10% per year until the budget balances, then go another 10% and let the difference go towards paying/retiring the debt.
The automatic spending increases are absolutely absurd and must stop now in order for there to be any hope at all.

Rabbie calls the NY Mayor on the carpet:

I am an Orthodox rabbi who lives in New Jersey but works in New York City. Approximately half of my waking life is lived under your laws and jurisdiction. Like everyone who lives or works in New York City, I have the right, even the obligation, to confront some of your policies regarding so-called “gun control”.
Why do I place the phrase “gun control” in quotes? Because this innocuous-sounding phrase, this expression that sounds like common sense, is in reality a dangerous bit of semantic trickery.
“Gun control” actually (and historically) means letting government, whether benign or ruthlessly evil, disarm certain sectors of society and allow others to remain armed. It means letting the government know where every gun owner lives and the number and types of firearms that he or she owns. It means putting the authority to decide who has the right to defend him or herself with a firearm into the hands of a government bureaucrat.
The honest definition of “gun control” is actually “victim disarmament”. Because the person with the gun will always control the person without the gun. Without the personal firearm as an “equalizer”, the stronger will always control the weaker. (Please see this “Genocide Chart” )

Here’s his genocide chart. (Scroll down)
