I started giving answers out toward the end of class, and when I got to “magisterium” I heard the comment “That was the easiest one!”
And there’s another answer for the Couch. -
The first policy fiction is a secure border. The White House will claim the border is secure. The Republicans will claim it is not. The border will never be made impenetrable and we will proceed down this distracting, argumentative line to no end.
The second policy fiction is premised on the “jobs Americans won’t do” which is more accurately described as “jobs Americans won’t do at that price point.” Employers must prove that no American could be found to do the job the illegal alien would otherwise do. This is impossible, absurd, and turns employers to liars in the pursuit of running their business. The aggrieved can turn on the employers and potentially cost them all sorts of civil and criminal penalties.
The most significant policy fiction is premised on the idea of reform. The plan does nothing to address the black market for unskilled, low cost migrant work. It does nothing to deal with the long delays in the present immigration system. It does nothing to actually solve our immigration problems, but hides behind the construct of “comprehensive” reform. Along the way, it potentially adds more people to already overwhelmed entitlement programs, but then that too is another kicked can.
The desire to “just do something” overwhelms Washington too much. This immigration plan gives orgasmic relief to that desire, but in all the hype and show does nothing to address the real needs of employers and the hopes and dreams of those still longing to come to United States whose wait will now most likely be extended and grow even more complex.
Immigration is an issue that keeps hispanic voters from trusting the GOP. Many call it a “gateway” issue. I get that. But pandering in the name of a solution does not actually fix the problem. This is just another policy debate the Democrats can use to get the GOP to fight itself. The GOP should pivot to actually fixing the immigration problem, not just addressing the here and now. -
Oh c’mom Hamous. Be reeeeesonable, not raaaaaacist. I mean look at how diligently the Government of both parties has enforced current immigration law. Its just unreeeeeeesaonable (but raaaaaacist) to even THINK that they wouldn’t enforce any reeeeesonable new laws.

It’s really pretty shocking when you think about how much crap is peddled out there as “settled science” and “confirmed by overwhelming concensus”. Atmosperic carbon dioxide, human caloric intake, the mere presence of inanimate firearms increases danger, carbohydrates and sugar are harmless things…yada, yada, yada.
But a new study at Petach Tikvah’s Beilinson Hospital says that for the elderly, higher levels of cholesterol mean a longer life, not a shorter one. A five year study of elderly patients with an average age of 82 showed that those with higher cholesterol levels, including higher LDL levels, lived longer than those with lower levels.
Those taking part in the study were being treated at Beilinson for a range of conditions – not including heart problems or other cholesterol-related problems, and none were given any cholesterol-reducing drugs. All patients in the study were suffering from diseases that are common among individuals in later old age, and all were considered having an equal chance of surviving by doctors.Thus, the study isolated cholesterol as a factor that could be studied independently.From the new Dr. Steve Sinatra & Dr. Jonny Bowden book:
MYTH: High cholesterol is the cause of heart disease.
FACT: Cholesterol is a fairly insignificant player in heart disease.
MYTH: High cholesterol is a good predictor of heart attacks.
FACT: High cholesterol is a lousy predictor of heart attacks. Half the people admitted to hospitals with heart disease have normal cholesterol, and plenty of people with elevated cholesterol have perfectly healthy hearts.
MYTH: Lowering cholesterol with statin drugs will prolong your life.
FACT: There is no data showing statins have any impact on longevity.
MYTH: Statin drugs are perfectly safe.

FACT: Diets that substitute carbohydrates for saturated fat may actually increase the risk for heart disease. -

Cholesterol is produced by the body as a response to systemic inflammation. This inflammation is typically caused by sugars, alcohol, white flour and overly processed foods. Other causes are infections. Cholesterol is analagous to firemen responding to a fire; sending the noisy firetrucks and firemen home may make things quieter for a while but it does nothing about the fire. Having a cholesterol reading below 100 is like running your car on 3 quarts of oil instead of 5.

I’ve had what is considered extremely high cholesterol (above 250) for about 25 years that I know of. For 15 years I’ve listened to doctors, friends, and family tell me I must get on statin drugs immediately because my cholesterol is high. And yes, they all put on their sad clown faces and plead “But we don’t want you to die!!!” I don’t want to die either but I’ve steadfastly resisted. A couple of years ago, independent of my doctor, I paid to have a whole battery of tests run focused on my circulatory system. The verdict? No sign of heart disease. No high blood pressure. No sign of blockage. No plaque build-up. No risk of stroke. The only outlier they could find? High cholesterol.

#10: Excellent post. When I had a couple of strokes a few years back the docs prescribed a ton of medication. After researching what they had told me to take I told them to go pound sand. My weight is good, I exercise by default on the land, and eat right. Blood pressure is 135/80 and cholesterol is darn near 200 which used to be normal. The docs keep lowering the numbers to sell more drugs. What was normal 5 years ago is considered high now. I take no drugs and I won’t see 55 again and am healthier than people half my age.

On this date in 1859, William Menger opened his hotel, now a landmark, on Alamo Plaza in San Antonio. In partnership with Charles Philip Degen, he also operated a brewery on the site. The hotel is one of the best-known lodging houses in Texas. Its guests have included O. Henry (William Sydney Porter), Ulysses S. Grant, and Theodore Roosevelt. WATCHDOGS TODAY: Secret government study exposes infiltration attempts by Mexican drug cartels
The internal study was conducted by the Homeland Securities and Analysis Institute, which is an internal think tank for DHS. The study has been kept under wraps for more than a year, according to CIR. The study’s authors said there may have been many more attempts by drug cartels to infiltrate the U.S. government in addition to the 15 discussed in their document.
“As part of lie detector tests, prospective hires have admitted to drug trafficking, human smuggling and other illegal activity, according to examples the agency previously provided to the Center for Investigative Reporting,” CIR said.
“One applicant told examiners that he smuggled 230 people across the border and shuttled drug dealers around border towns so they could conduct their business,” CIR said. “Another admitted to various crimes, including transporting $700,000 in drug money and 50 kilograms of cocaine across the Southwest border.”
A total of 146 agency officers and agents have been charged with or convicted of corruption-related offenses since Oct. 1, 2004. Among the offenses charged were accepting bribes to allow drugs to enter the U.S. and stealing tax money. -

I’ll defer to the resident plumber but I think the chances of the pipe actually being lead are very slim. More likely it was galvanized steel.
There are other common misnomers we use frequently. Like “tin foil”. When is the last time you really had a roll of tin foil?
A bit of trivia – the word “plumbing” comes from the fact that ancient Rome did use lead water pipes. The Latin word for the element lead is Plumbum (chemical symbol Pb). -

Any prosecutor who withholds exculpatory evidence from the defense and sends an innocent person to jail needs to face the death penalty. -

The only outlier they could find? High cholesterol.
That one outlier is costing me money. I switched life insurance carriers last year and I could not get the super duper supreme class rate because of my 247 cholesterol. All my other stats were and are great so I was only bumped down one rate class. Meanwhile on the medical insurance front I opt to take some baseline health screen test to see if I can qualify for a lower monthly premium. Once again the only outlier is cholesterol so I do not get the maximum deduction possible.
I can guarantee that I am in better overall shape than 80%+ of people in both ability and medical test results, but I still can not get the best rates. In the interim, I will continue to wait for the day that the conventional wisdom doctors finally realize their mistake of the past 50 years regarding low fat diets and the push towards a higher carbohydrate diet. I still believe it is 80% diet and 20% exercise. -

Why not use “so what”? It was such a devastating argument in high school against parents. It’s a purely natural place to go when you are flustered and your back is against the wall, and you just don’t want to deal with it any more. It’s not like they have morality or a set definition of truth to refute the argument. Even sophistry gets exhausting after a while, the poor dears.
It is also the words of someone in charge. Kind of like “let them eat crust [cake],”… For all that they enjoyed fighting the power, they love even more to wield it, and completely fail to see the disconnect in their own set of strictures. -
Sola scriptura… isn’t that where the doctor only absentmindedly listens to your symptoms and then writes you a prescription so he can clear out space for the next patient?

You listen to strange birdies. Have you been sipping my tea? (Crap, now I’m sounding like bobo 😯 ). I simply concluded that the tension got too high around here. I hve had lots more things to say after dropping some shrooms in me tea but my sense was to “let it go’ for now. I got a clear sense that posting my thoughts about immigration reform Just taking a break. During that break I’ll continue to do as I have been and look into depth the details of the immigration reform. Ive read through several pros and cons regarding the proposed bill an, of course, Senator Rubio. That included Erick Erickson’s piece as posted above. Right now I’m looking into the constitutional powers granted regarding immigration which I assume Marco Rubio is well aware, and to be fair, so does Mike Lee (I’d be extremely shocked if eitehr of them didn’t). This is the website I unload my politics. Other sites is for spiritual thoughts and others like facebook and my own blog (which I almost never use) for spiritual, family, and social purposes. I want to keep politcs ut of my posts from there as much as possible though I have no inherent oppostion to getting political on facebook. In fact, I enjoy the political posts here and there I do get.
So, in the meantime, I’ll collude with demons and see where my reading takes me. If there are good talking points on a memo somewhere, I wouldn’t mind a link to it. -

When our neighborhood cable system goes out ( it’s nothing more than basic Direct TV cabled in from the landlord’s dish) I hook back up to the old antennae
which gets most of the the Houston digital stations. I’ve decided to leave it that way so i can have HD for the game Sunday.
Now I know where y’all are watching Twilight Zone and some other oldies. -
We bailed on Comcast cable last year and now I am just watching over-the-air stations using some little gadget my husband hooked up for me.

I loved that show. Netflix has it in instantstream format. I may sit with the kids sometime and watch a couple of episodes.
