Friday Happiness Open Comments

It’s Friday. Time for a light-hearted opening to the day.

First, if you don’t at least smile when you see this, you are heartless and cold. Or blind, maybe you’re blind. And deaf. Blind and deaf.
Here’s another one:

And a compilation of happy moments:

Such unabashed joy makes my soul smile. Yes, it does.
But dogs are not alone in the welcoming home their long-missing owners:

And I know that this video has been out for a while, but since I’m trying to bring smiles on this Friday morning:

Okay, we’ve had our grins. Now, let’s tear into the day’s events and solve the world’s problems.

Send me the embed code and I’ll take a look. I won’t be able to open the raw link from here if it’s in youtube, so you might want to copy hammy.

If Hammy has wordpress updated you do not need the embed code. Just copy/paste the vidiot URL into the box.

Okay, I went back and re-embedded the code. It seems to be working now. When I first opened it up, all of the links just vanished. Poof. Gone. With no explanation, and for no good reason.

HEADLINE: DEVELOPING: Obama recess appointments unconstitutional, court
A federal appeals court has overturned President Obama’s controversial recess appointments from last year, arguing he abused his powers and acted when the Senate was not actually in a recess.
The three-judge panel’s ruling is a major blow to Mr. Obama. The judges ruled that the appointments Mr. Obama made to the National Labor Relations Board are illegal, and the board no longer has a quorum to operate.

    #42 M42 (but I repeat myself): I found this word-choice appalling:

The team allowed the beetles to crawl around the floor of a plain-walled cylindrical drum with an open top, meaning they could only use the night sky to orientate themselves.

The last time I checked, “orientate” was not a word; “orient” is the correct usage. I think I know where the error comes in the mix; when freshman first go to college, before the school year actually starts, they attend “orientation”. Then come the absurd sentences, “have you been orientated yet?”

Someone at Fox needs to go back and take an arithmetic class:

The experimental Chrysler Turbine turns 60 this year, and Chrysler has created a special edition version of its 300 sedan to commemorate the anniversary.
The one-off car is finished with a number of features that pay homage to the original, including Turbine Bronze paint, machined-billet grille work and black light bezels meant to echo the 1963 car’s distinctive shadowed, intake-style headlight design.

    Darn conservatives

Wisconsin’s budget picture brightened Thursday, with new estimates that show a surplus will grow to $484 million, giving Republicans and Gov. Scott Walker even more room to pursue their tax cutting agenda.
The estimate from the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau was nearly $137 million better than one Walker’s administration released in November. The numbers will be used by Walker as he puts the final touches on his two-year spending plan, which he’s set to unveil on Feb. 20.

The odds of switching over to a duodecimal system has about as much chance as DiFi advocating that everybody openly carry semi-autos with 40 round magazines. Or broncobama coming up with something that resembles a balanced budget, or Harry Reid passing any budget through the senate, I could go on but I think you get the point.

IF we can get even the most moronic LTN to agree that life ends when the heart stops beating, why can’t we get them to agree that when the heart starts beating it is an iron clad indicator that life has begun? I think a great first step to ending the spiritual and emotional scourge that abortion represents is to start at this position.
    1) If there is a heartbeat, then there is a living person and to kill him/her is murder.
    2) If this is a case of rape/incest then abortion is permissable within the first 3 months. HOWEVER if this is the case, there had darned sure better be a police report on file with some credible evidence, otherwise – no deal.
    3) If the mother is in imminent danger of death, then the abortion is permissable because the baby would die as well with or without the intervention. If this is the case she belongs in a hospital instead of an abortion mill.
These are reasonable restrictions on the wholesale murder of unborn children. It is understood that this is not the ideal, nor the position of the Catholic Church. What it will demonstrate is that the left has no interest in any restrictions whatsoever on abortion. These restrictions, if enacted will, eliminate 90+% of all legal abortions and I think that would be a tremendous first step.
It is also highly unlikely to ever happen without DIVINE intervention.

    59 Boney,
I am in agreement with the majority of what you have written. Ten years ago I would have scoffed at the idea of a late term abortion. I was horrified at the prospect of a woman aborting a pregnancy so late. I can accept Birth Control and early term abortions. I know many do not and I respect their beliefs and positions in this regard.
My drug addled youngest daughter gave birth to a special needs child. We were given custody of our Angel after Mom recklessly endangered her young daughter’s life. Raising Angel is the greatest gift that life has given me and we have no second thoughts about stepping up for her.
We take Angel to physical therapy and vision therapy 5 days a week. Angel is much better shape than many of the other children we see in the waiting room.
Raising Special Needs children can be expensive and emotionally draining on the average family. Ms Simple and I are retired and money has never been a problem for us, but I see many of the families in the waiting room and too many of them have that 1000-yard stare. Worse…many worry about how and who will take care of the child if the parents are not around.
I have mixed feelings about aborting a child in the third trimester because the indications are not positive, but I can understand why a parent might do it.
    ————————————————————————
I know that a woman might make a false claim of rape to get an abortion, but I also know that there are a lot of rapes that go unreported. I am inclined to take the woman’s word on the first one.

Hex is much easier to understand and almost all calves are easier therein (thirds notwithstanding). Hex is also much more compact, needing fewer characters to represent very big numbers.
I used to be able to do hex arithmetic in my head way back when I programmed in systems that had small address spaces.

At this point, you all know what my stance is. I can’t fathom aborting a child after six months. Why is adoption never discussed?

  54. Simple Simon Avatar

    62 WB,
That is an excellent point and I am sure there are a lot of folks out there that would take on the expense and responsibility of adopting a Special Needs child, but I am going to go out on a limb and speculate that the supply-demand ratio is pretty lopsided.

I just came in from working outside. I’ve been able to go out and work on Mirkwood this week, and I’ve been focusing on the front “point” – it’s about 10-15 feet of the front of the pile. Tonight, I moved the front point of Mirkwood back about a foot, and took almost a foot off the top of the work area. I “fluffed” it before I quit, taking the yard fork and loosening the dirt up to make it easier to move when I next grab the shovel.
There’s a feral cat that’s been making itself at home here lately. It used to be real, real skittish, running off in a panic if we got within 30 feet. Then, a few weeks ago, it got real friendly, coming up to us and yowling constantly. Office Help thinks “it” might be a “she” and “she” might have been in heat.
I saw the kitty tonight while I was turning the dirt over, and she looked at me kind of funny and didn’t get close. I did hear it pouncing in amongst the dried ragweed stalks. But she never came up to me again.
Not sure what that means. Not sure I want to know.

I think that if we can move the discussion from “choice” and “wimminzez healthcare” towards what it really is, which is human sacrifice on the altar of convenience to the pagan god of sexual immorality it is possible to get closer to the root of the issue.
Like my example above, if you are willing to give up protecting the rape/incest/life of the mother produced babies in order to save the rest, you have eliminated over 90% of the abortions. It ain’t perfect but it is a whole lot better than what we have now. I would much rather be able to save 90% than lose 100%.

The concept and the word that all pro-choicers fear as a vampire fears a crucifix is personhood and person. The state that first passes law declaring that the unborn child is a person from the moment of conception will start the avalanche that will eventually undo Roe v Wade.
