Weekend Open Comments

I’ve heard some bizarre ruminations on what the Republican resurgence in this election means but this has to take the cake:

One reason the Republicans won on Tuesday is because many of their supporters have already given up on this world and are waiting for the next. I know, I used to be one of them.

Frank Schaeffer was apparently raised in an apocalyptic sect. I’m sure it is a rough upbringing and probably scarred him for life. Such a belief system does indeed lead to bizarre behavior such as waiting on a mountaintop for “The Rapture” or looking for alien spaceships hiding behind comets. In extreme examples it can even lead to mass suicides. Raising a child in such a cult may even constitute a form of child abuse. It does not, however, give one license to indict the outcome of an entire election.

A more likely explanation to the Republican ascendancy are the failed policies of Obama, Pelosi and Reid.

I have yet to understand the independent and/or undecided third of the US citizenry. Lots of people were fed up with so many aspects of Bush 43’s administration by the end of his second term. But to be disgusted to the point of not being able to make a mature distinction between what we would get from the jerk McCain and from the socialist amateur Obama?

That’s where I place the blame.

Wanna double your business in a year during bad times? Let the customers wear their guns in the store.

Remember six months ago when the anti-gun Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and Washington CeaseFire were aghast that Seattle coffee giant
Starbucks would not become their political surrogate and ban armed customers from their shops?

The campaign against Starbucks had kicked off down in California (where else?) and the gun prohibition lobby tried to spread it nationally, but
quickly lost traction when Starbucks did the responsible thing and merely announced that it was in compliance with, and would do business under all
    state and local laws.

Now comes the news that Starbucks is reporting big earnings during the third quarter. The coffee giant reported yesterday that earnings had risen to
$278.9 million, or 37 cents per share. Thatโ€™s up significantly over last yearโ€™s third quarter earnings report of $150 million and 20 cents a share.

    Gโ€™Morning all

O.K. Iโ€™m off to vote and chit-chat with our precinct judge. Then tonight Iโ€™ll be part of the 100 million watching the returns. That got me thinking,
watching election returns is a whole loot like watching the ping-pong championships,
They happen every two years and in the end, China is going to win.

    Today from Forbes:

Fresh from his battering in Tuesdayโ€™s mid-term elections, the President learned that Forbes magazine has named Chinese president Hu Jintao as the lead
figure in the magazineโ€™s Most Powerful People on Earth list.

Good morning all. Frost is on the pumpkins, the pastures, the rooftops; 32 at 6:30 and holding at 7:30. Dawn’s rosy fingers softly crept over the horizon as the mares went out and made their way to the side pasture. The light was faint but enough to make frosty grass come to life as a demure silvery backdrop on which the mares seemed to float rather than walk across. White Mara and Contessa were somewhat ghostly beings with bay Cameo more distinct as they moved about. The magic lasted until the Sun’s glow breached the horizon.

All is distinct now, though his disk still hovers below the treeline. Golden shafts slip between branches and paint the frost with pools of soft light. In the open spaces behind the treeline it becomes mist rising in his embrace, seemingly at once still frozen but gently floating upward. A lone squirrel sits atop the fence rail near the barn, fluffed up as he surveys the pasture. Everybody else seems to be sleeping in. A beautiful gift to begin the day. Thank you, Lord.

    Obama On โ€™60 Minutesโ€™: โ€˜Leadership Isnโ€™t Just Legislationโ€™

โ€œI think thatโ€™s a fair argument. I think that, over the course of two years we were so busy and so focused on getting a bunch of stuff done that, we stopped paying attention to the fact that leadership isnโ€™t just legislation. That itโ€™s a matter of persuading people. And giving them confidence and bringing them together. And setting a tone,โ€ Mr. Obama told 60 Minutesโ€™ Steve Kroft in an exclusive interview set to air Sunday.

โ€œMaking an argument that people can understand,โ€

Well, Mr. President. Telling the truth, at least once in a while, would help a great deal.

Well, I had a good time at the quilt show yesterday. I went with someone who had never been before, and there was much ooh-ing and aah-ing. The incredible talent of some of those quiltmakers astounds me. Until I saw the Obama quilt. I told my friend that may have ruined the whole day for me, and we both laughed. Later one, she warned against going into a particular exhibit, saying I might run into another Obama quilt, and she wouldn’t want to ruin my day. We laughed again.

And I found my Santa for this year. I seem to be gravitating towards Jim Shore’s work the last few years. Lovely has laid claim to my Santa collection when I die. I hope I have enough time to build a truly stupendous grouping before she gets her hands on it.

    Good times.

I notice that Jennings is calloing me a liar for remembering he supported Card Check after the 2008 elections.

    Nice.

This is why the Establishment Republican party was losing elections—on three counts:

    1. Telling us we should mollify the opposition in hopes of converting them.

    2. Forgetting they did that when things get better even without caving in.

    3. Calling the people who remind them of that liars.

This is why Tea Partiers need to keep an eye on these folks, and its why we should not support candidates they support.

NBC’s ethics policy generally bars political activity, including contributions, without the approval of the president of NBC News, Steve Capus, according to a 2007 story on MSNBC.com.

I didn’t realize NBC’s ethics policies applied to Fox. Olbermann’s donations are kind of funny considering this:

On October 7th, in reference to the Fox News donations, Olbermann asked House Majority Whip James Clyburn if there is a legislative response available when a cable news network “goes beyond having a point of view and actually starts to shill for partisan causes and actually starts to donate to partisan groups of one party.”

I hope he and Rachel keep their jobs for a long, long time but may be hard to justify keeping “Air America in Drag” (MSNBC) going when Comcast takes over NBC. Those evil capitalists are all about making money so I doubt they’ll continue being Obama’s Lap Dog.

If you want to see why Democrats feared Marco Rubio so much that they tried to stick a knife in the back of their own candidate to stop him, this video demonstrates just how powerful a figure he will become with a national platform on which to speak. The GOP may not have had a speaker like Rubio since Ronald Reagan, excelling at both the message and the mechanics of oratory โ€” and even Reagan didnโ€™t have this kind of compelling backstory. Rubio reminded listeners of his origins from a people exiled from their birthplace because of their desire for freedom, and the dream of a better life that is a โ€œsacred dutyโ€ for this generation to deliver to the next, not to mortgage from the next generation for our own exploitation (via Freedomโ€™s Lighthouse, transcript via Andrew Malcolm):

Searching for video footage where David Barton’s given his 210% support of freedom of religion on the Glenn Beck show I found an interview of Barton where he did precisely that right around the 9:00 minute mark.

Interviewer: What are you trying to accomplish through all of this?

David Barton: You know that there is a couple of things going on is, I believe firmly in the institution of the separation of church and state because God did that in the Bible.

Can’t get clearer than that. In this same interview Barton lays out a case against bob42 as well. Just replace “Christian” with “bob42” (scary thought, I know) and I think we see a little bit into understanding bob’s demeanor. Barton also makes a distinction btween spirituality and theology and linking that to Jefferson and Franklin as well as the overall movement of the Founding Fathers.

There’s really no such thing as a Moderate Democrat—as demonstrated in the last Congress.

Moderate Republicans are just folks who know they can’t get elected as Democrats, but they hate conservatives every bit as much.

    GJT & Sarge,

Or maybe a moderate is just a moderate!! I reserve then right to pick the causes that I support and not follow lemming like behind either party’s banner. This may not suit your feelings but there is nothing I can do about that.

I don’t know a thing about government, but I have sat in on and led my share of contentious business meetings. I have never found it a weakness to keep an open mind and listen to what the other guy has to say or consider his viewpoint. Every now and then I find out that I am wrong.

My company sells equipment to a lot of folks. Our revenues are in the billions, but that could easily be wiped out if we do not listen to the voice of our clients. Zinging a guy in a meeting may give me a few minutes of testosterone driven pleasure, but I most likely have driven this guy into the arms of our competition. Putting my selfish ego ahead of the stockholders, managers, and employees of my company is not smart.

GOOD POLITICIANS know this and make every effort not to needlessly antagonize anyone. Even Reagan could sit in the Oval Office and knock back a couple of snorts of Old Bushmills with Tip O’Neil. I can just imagine those two old Irishmen putting the days arguments behind them and talking like old friends.

Therefore I am proud to say that I am one of those swing voters, who helped put a lot of your guys into office. I cannot speak for my fellow moderates and you know that is true because moderates did not jump thru the hoops in Nevada, Delaware, Alaska, or in my District 22 (Gene Green was re-elected by a wide margin despite a Republican sweep and a Hispanic opponent). Just having the brand “R” was not an automatic key to election.

Savor the victory! It is well deserved, but remember it was the lowly moderate swing voters that put the Democrats into office in 2006 & 2008. The Progressives-Liberals in the Democrat party got arrogant and ignored the counsel of the moderates and look what happened to them. Sauce for the Goose will cook the Gander just as well.

Neither Party or the Congress for that matter is held in high regard by the public. The inability to manage our country’s finances is a large part of that disregard, but the juvenile behavior by supposed adults is also part of it.

They have 10 B&B units nearby and my sisters, nieces, and I were able to go and walk through them. It was “ooh, look at this!”, “Oh my goodness, you HAVE to come see this!” and “Ya’ll come here NOW and look at this!”. I have some pics, which I’ll try to post. The places are in the country in the Round Top area. Quiet and restful, and the rooms are lovely.

I really wanted to stay there instead of coming home. The rooms are awesome. I’ll see if I can put my pictures up where ya’ll can see them.

Some good points and I agree there is a lot of swinging from one band wagon to the other. But really the question was what do you guys ever fight for?

The choir is doing a song this morning that I dislike for several reasons. The rhythm is easy and the harmony is nice, but it’s so far out of my range that I couldn’t hit the high E even with the help of my ex-wife’s panties. I’m actually hoping that we’re fat on tenors and slim on basses so I can sing the easier part. The song is also long, painfully slow, and is likely to put people to sleep.

The second tune should wake them up. It’s an upbeat arrangement of a classic American spiritual, Do Lord. My ‘lil sister will be belting out the soprano solo and the tenor line is fun to sing.

Tim, first thing never doubt that I can or will fight for something I believe. You presume too much. I suspect that most self-identified moderates or independents are the same.

Making deals and compromise is part of the business world. Even within my own company we have divisions that have different priorities and getting cooperation is essential across divisional boundaries.

You can yell and threaten, but in the end uncooperative employees can monkey-wrench a good project in a thousand ways without risking direct confrontation. It takes a little longer, but getting “buy-in” will guarantee success. It is good old fashioned salesmanship.

It is comforting to hear Progressives and Conservatives alike bash moderates. You only attack things you fear.

I don’t think anyone fears “moderates”. Actually, I don’t really think anyone is attacking them to begin with. But when you have divergent ideologies on specific things its hard for ideologues to understand how moderates can flit back and forth between the two. The difference between Obama’s agenda and a conservative agenda is so great that it defies logic that anyone could be wishy-washy enough to go either way.

Which is why Obama’s election was not a mandate for Progressivism—it was a rejection of “Compassionate Conservatism”. When Independents saw that the only difference between Obamunism and Bushism was the speed at which they were going to reach a common goal, they reacted in even greater numbers than they did against Bush’s spending and growth of government (it was never about the war—the war was a way for the Left to keep thier base in line and keep the political atmosphere supercharged).

Some new info on the Olberman firing:

Network sources tell Playbook that Keith Olbermann was suspended because he refused to deliver an on-camera mea culpa, which would have allowed him to continue anchoring “Countdown.” Olbermann told his bosses he didn’t know he was barred from making campaign contributions, although he is resisting saying that publicly. Olbermann may not hold as many cards as he thinks. He makes $7 million a year and MSNBC’s prime time is not as dependent on him as it was before the addition of Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell, who make considerably less.

So the network gave him an out and he didn’t take it.

Confirms the opinion that he’s an idiot.

Goor morning all. Well, the switch back to standard time is much easier to navigate than the switch to daylight time. Nice to get up at 6 and see Dawn already extending tendrils of brightness over the horizon but still dark enough to see Orion’s belt in the west as I head to the road for the paper. Another frost but lighter than yesterday and 35 at 6 and 7. Lighter tender mists rising with the Sun still shimmered in the field behind and below the treeline but vanished sooner. Currently (10:30) it is 64 with 10% humidity and a light east breeze playing through the trees. The pollen be damned, open the windows.

Tonight on NBC the Cowboys play America’s Team in Green Bay. Good viewing to be had regardless of the outcome.

I see where Allen West is planning on joining the Congressional Black Caucus. He says he meets all the qualifications and heโ€™s not even going to ask permission โ€“ just show up.

They sure as heck don’t want to be interrogated by him. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton go to fist-a-cuffs (no helmets!) after a wreck, Kyle Busch shoots the bird at an official on-camera and gets a 2-lap penalty, championship lead changes hands……yep, must be stock car racin’ in Texas!

#41 Darren, you might be pleased to know that I’ve edited my spoof article to delete all mention of David Barton, and replaced it with this.

…and a “Fair and Balanced” seminar led by Bill O’Reilly.

It cut down the length, and was funnier than Barton.

I am adding names to the faces in my LST blogothon pictures. Fortunately I remember most folks real name. What is disturbing is Smacktle’s face shows up more than anyone else.

    BTW
I have tested the face recognition software that is available on Picasa, Photoshop Elements 9 Organizer, and iPhoto.

Y’all know I luv my iMac. Let me be blunt, iPhoto sucks. If you do Mac go ahead and plan on staying with Photoshop Elements Organizer or Picasa. Picasa wins hands down the facial recognition contest. For me it had the least false positives out of 12000 pictures scanned and is easier to change names when it goofs. Oh and it is free. Photoshop Elements 9 w/Organizer will set you back $79-100 and is great for all of us when correcting photos and the Face Recognition is just a little less problematic than Picasa. However PE organizer is not as intuitive to use to sort through your photos.

If you want a face recognition proggie that is hip slick and cool and is about 90% precise I can direct you to a $11,000 program but you cannot adjust your photos.
    /just sayin.

In my tours of the blogosphere and news outlets I hear a continuing meme from BO. He continues to say that he did not articulate what he was doing and that “we” just did not understand. Geez I cannot remember any other president being on TV as much as he has. What scared me with Kraft was his statement that there are changes coming due to the latest law changes. He sounded like he himself did not know what (or how bad) the impact was going to be.

Reading the likes of the KOS kiddies is funnier yet. They are calling for heads all over the place. They even said that BO did not do enough for the base. I fell out of my tree laughing.

He continues to say that he did not articulate what he was doing and that โ€œweโ€ just did not understand.

    Translation:

Those common folk just don’t understand me because I am so much more educated than those sweaty masses. I shall have to learn to talk down at their level from now on, because the commoners with the pitchforks obviously have no idea how wonderful my ideas are, and that I know better than they do what is good for them.
