Peter Hitchens, brother of left-wing atheist Christopher Hitchens, relates a conversation he had with his brother in a public forum during which Christopher made the following challenge:

Can you name any moral action or ethical statement that could be made or performed by a believer but could not be made or performed by an unbeliever?

Turns out Christopher answered his own question, and actually admitted it:

Here is my attempt to win my own prize. When Lech Walesa was starting his work in the Polish shipyards and the Polish Militia and the outer ring of the Polish Army were closing in on Gdansk, he was interviewed with his then fairly small group, and he was asked: โ€œAren’t you frightened, aren’t you afraid? You’ve taken on a whole powerful state and army – aren’t you scared?โ€ And he said: โ€œI’m not frightened of anything but God or anyone but God.โ€

This came back to me, I thought, well, this meets my two criteria. It’s certainly a noble thing to have said, a distinguished thing to have said, and I certainly couldn’t have said it. So it does meet both my criteria.

mharper42 I assume you have full privilege here on Hammyโ€™s couch โ„ข and could post images? Nope. After LST closed up I really have not had any interest in formal political blogging. I had a good run of 5 years at LST and that time meant bunches to me but frankly I am burned out. I occasionally update my own… Read more »

We turned on our floor for the first time this season. We have radiant tubing in the floor, but it’s not tied to a thermostat yet, so we have to step into the mechanical room to turn the boiler on and off. It’s starting to feel toasty in here, and the floor has enough thermal mass to throw heat well… Read more »

You gotta get one with one of those old-time bicycle horns with the rubber bulb you squeeze.

Also some sweet rims on the wheels. Maybe those spinny ones.

Tedtam, we all reach the point where we need a walker — has your time come? Me, I’ve reached the point where if I have a friend using a walker — especially a fancy walker with partial wheels, goody baskets, and some even have a built-in seat — I ask if I can try it out. Getting personal experience so… Read more »

I am going to play hooky tomorrow and go to the quilt show with some friends. I used to go every year with my daughter, but she’s all grown up and doin’ her own thing now. /sigh

I’m just worried that my back isn’t going to hold out. It’s been trying to glitch up all day.

Squawker, we are missing your artwork and now that LST is closed down, no way to even see the good old stuff. My favorite was your Obammy on the Road collage. As we enter this brave new world with House Republicans fixin to reverse (we hope) the damage inflicted by the Foul O and his crowd, can we occasionally see… Read more »

Hammie Well there ya go, technology has blinded you from the truth . ๐Ÿ˜‰ Seriously, Edd listed out who got the cash. Squawkie – All I saw were the TV commercials with firefighters and doctors telling me they saved lives and how many children died in car accidents (not how many died in car accidents caused by red light runners). Edd and Mattress weren’t on my iPod or XM radio.

Wagonflamer Actually that is not true either. When the cameras were put in back during the White era one of the arguments for, was that the money would go to fund the areas I mentioned above. If memory serves the state even got involved and said hospital emergency rooms would benefit and I can tell you from first hand knowledge,… Read more »

In Edd Hendeeโ€™s commercial he mentioned who benefited monetarily from it, cops, fd and hospitals

Just like the pro-lottery people said lottery proceeds would provide better funding of our schools.

If there was any money left over after it got cycled through the General Fund.

Hammie Funny they didnโ€™t mention any of this during the campaign. All we heard was โ€œred light cameras save lives!โ€ and the perennial favorite of entrenched nanny state politicians โ€œBut its for the children!!!โ€ Ummmm that is not exactly right. In Edd Hendee’s commercial he mentioned who benefited monetarily from it, cops, fd and hospitals. That damn commercial played like… Read more »

Originally intended to empower government to “keep us safe,” NSLs have been used to demand everything from massive amounts of private financial records related to legal gambling, to “sneak & peek” searches of non-violent domestic drug dealers. All under the secretive veil of National Security. Before the USA PATRIOT Act, the FBI could only use so-called National Security Letters for… Read more »
