Thursday Open Comments

Peter Hitchens, brother of left-wing atheist Christopher Hitchens, relates a conversation he had with his brother in a public forum during which Christopher made the following challenge:

Can you name any moral action or ethical statement that could be made or performed by a believer but could not be made or performed by an unbeliever?

Turns out Christopher answered his own question, and actually admitted it:

Here is my attempt to win my own prize. When Lech Walesa was starting his work in the Polish shipyards and the Polish Militia and the outer ring of the Polish Army were closing in on Gdansk, he was interviewed with his then fairly small group, and he was asked: “Aren’t you frightened, aren’t you afraid? You’ve taken on a whole powerful state and army – aren’t you scared?” And he said: “I’m not frightened of anything but God or anyone but God.”

This came back to me, I thought, well, this meets my two criteria. It’s certainly a noble thing to have said, a distinguished thing to have said, and I certainly couldn’t have said it. So it does meet both my criteria.

Imagine this – the city does not seem to want to give up the revenue stream from the red light camera system. Once again, us foolish voters just don’t know public safety when we see it. If everyone does like the did in other states and just stops paying, the vendor will come in and take them down.

The Federal Reserve Bank is going to issue another $1 trillion in funny money since no one else on the planet will loan to us any more. I’m sure the economic impact of that move will hardly be noticeable, unless you eat or consume energy. Bernake was a liar and a crook before he came to the Fed and still is, but I’m certain that he would not make a move without Big O’s blessing. Another last ditch effort to kill off the dollar. While the Fed is supposedly “independent,” it is actually an arm of the Legislative Branch rather than the Executive Branch. Maybe someone on the Hill could look into their operations a little more closely – Hello Rand Paul?

Have a good day, and think gold and silver.

Funny they didn’t mention any of this during the campaign. All we heard was “red light cameras save lives!” and the perennial favorite of entrenched nanny state politicians “But its for the children!!!”

Mayor Annise Parker acknowledged the referendum has exacerbated ongoing challenges with the city’s budget and noted HPD, which was the recipient of funds from the camera program, would be responsible for cutting its budget to make up for the immediate $10 million gap created by the vote.

“We’re going to try to do it in a way that does not impact public safety,” she said, although she acknowledged that furloughs or layoffs of city employees may be necessary, a position she has maintained since passing the fiscal 2011 budget with more than $70 million of unrealized revenue and spending cuts.

We already know the whine that RLCs make us safer is a lie. You can stop that now.

Parker asked citizens for patience. “We don’t want to enter a situation where we have to litigate,” she said. “We want a peaceful resolution. We understand what we have to do. We ask all the parties to give us a little space as we work through this.”

As to the “legally binding contract” argument for keeping the RLCs up, a former city attorney said it pretty clearly:

The voters have now said, this option is now legally unavailable to you.

    Take the cameras down now.

There already is a peaceful resolution to this. The voters decided on it this past Tuesday. If Parker doesn’t implement the voters’ decision then it is her and C.O.H. that is the impediment to a peaceful resolution. That is as much space as they need.

RLC’s have been shown to reduce some collisions at intersections (cross-traffic), but have increased rear-end collisions by more. IIRC, Richmond VA recently installed RLC’s at an intersection where there had been no accidents in several years.

If you’re really looking for safety (as Edd Hendee said on his pro-RLC ads), the two most effective things you can do are free:
Increase the duration of the yellow light by 1/2 to 1 second.
Have red show for 1/4 to 1/2 second in all directions in each cycle.

What’s the difference between livestock & a pet? Just name him “Fluffy” and teach him to fetch.

btw – I worked at a refinery in Denmark where they used sheep to keep the grass short around their storage tanks. They had about 75 sheep wandering around the place. Sheep work for next to nothing, they don’t have occupational safety issues, and they don’t participate in labor unrest.

Pyro, great story about sheep employed in Denmark — you don’t have to buy medical insurance for them either.

Friend worked on a technical contract in India and sent back pictures of cows wandering around and through the plant. Not employed cows, they just had roaming rights there. That was 20 years ago but I’ll bet it is still the same today.

Too bad the city’s got a legal problem with the outfit they contracted with for the cameras. Perhaps their legal beagles should have anticipated something like this when they negotiated the contracts in the first place. Maybe they could raise water rates or something like that to pay off their legal obligations, or perhaps Boss Hoggwhite might have some left over campaign contributions that he could use to help offset the losses.

In my neighborhood, some livestock is allowed. Our lots are large, and as long as it is kept 100 feet from any dwelling and the poop is scooped (stalls mucked regularly), you can have a goat or a horse. I’d take the goat – I could use one! – but my fence sucks and we really don’t have the money right now to fix it.

And we’re inside the city limits.

Some people simply don’t get it! This POS Fattah wants to do this?!?

I can’t help but believe that the “Slick Willie Coalition” paid/bribed him with a future position in the future Hitlery administration if he put forward the resolution.
I guess the fact that Der Schlickmeister lied under oath (a felony) is irrelevant. That the whiney pussy Trent Lott refused to hold a genuine trial in the Senate is inexcusable. Had the Senate been forced to produce all the gory details in the open air of the Senate chamber, the D’s would have been forced to convict and we could have removed that stain from the Whitehouse. That trial would have established the precedent that the law applies to all, including the president; as it stands now, some presidents (like the current occupant, the foul “O”) may take the position that they are above the law and they can choose which to enforce on whom they please. Does the justice department’s dropping of the voter intimidation case (caught on camera) of the New Black Panthers Party come to mind?
This guy Fattah is a POS. Did he get re-elected on Tues? I don’t think that he will get away with this stunt.

Trust me, you don’t want those nasty things. Ever tried to trim their hooves? (yes, you hafta trim them) I’d take the goat but just letting you know that it will be going to the slaughter house. along with the hog (named Pork Chop) and the steer (named Freezermeat #5).

Thanks for your suggestions yesterday about starting up a conservative women PAC. I’m still discussing it with my “partner in crime”.

Originally intended to empower government to “keep us safe,” NSLs have been used to demand everything from massive amounts of private financial records related to legal gambling, to “sneak & peek” searches of non-violent domestic drug dealers. All under the secretive veil of National Security.

Before the USA PATRIOT Act, the FBI could only use so-called National Security Letters for securing the records of suspected terrorists or spies. But under PATRIOT the FBI can use them to get telephone, Internet, financial, credit, and other personal records about anybody without any court approval as long as it believes the information could be relevant to an authorized terrorism or espionage investigation.

A National Security Letter can be issued by any FBI agent with the rank of Field Supervisor or above, at their discretion–Not even a rubber stamp from judge, and absolutely no probable cause is necessary. If that isn’t a scenario that invites abuse, I don’t know what is.

He just got married? And he’s sending those pics? Must be an understanding newlywed wife!

The Boy’s Bride is very, very pretty but not at all pretentious, She has all the curves in the right places, so She has the same attitude as my Daughter, LQQK BUTT DON’T TOUCH!
Of course she would NEVER approve of him going to a bar where mostly Nekked girls danced on the poles, and thankfully the Boy doesn’t approve of those kinda places either. 😉

Dunno where you live but I found this in the Houston city ordinance online website:

It shall be unlawful for any person to keep or maintain within the limits of the city one or more hogs, swine, pigs, or goats, other than milch goats.

Even if the city allowed goats, our subdivision’s deed restrictions don’t. It’s stinky enough with the number of residents who walk their dogs w/o taking poop bags.

It’s a female goat that provides milk for people. Sounds archaic, don’t think doctors prescribe goat’s milk these days.

Funny they didn’t mention any of this during the campaign. All we heard was “red light cameras save lives!” and the perennial favorite of entrenched nanny state politicians “But its for the children!!!”

Ummmm that is not exactly right. In Edd Hendee’s commercial he mentioned who benefited monetarily from it, cops, fd and hospitals. That damn commercial played like everywhere dude. Seems to me Mattress Mack’s commercial said the same thing.

Just like the pro-lottery people said lottery proceeds would provide better funding of our schools.

If there was any money left over after it got cycled through the General Fund.

Actually that is not true either. When the cameras were put in back during the White era one of the arguments for, was that the money would go to fund the areas I mentioned above. If memory serves the state even got involved and said hospital emergency rooms would benefit and I can tell you from first hand knowledge, they did.

Squawkie – All I saw were the TV commercials with firefighters and doctors telling me they saved lives and how many children died in car accidents (not how many died in car accidents caused by red light runners). Edd and Mattress weren’t on my iPod or XM radio.

Well there ya go, technology has blinded you from the truth . 😉

Seriously, Edd listed out who got the cash. Also a little birdie provided me with a flyer from a well known hospital explaining how they had received funds directly from the red light camera fines and while they wanted everyone to vote their conscience don’t forget that little factoid.

Squawker, we are missing your artwork and now that LST is closed down, no way to even see the good old stuff. My favorite was your Obammy on the Road collage.

As we enter this brave new world with House Republicans fixin to reverse (we hope) the damage inflicted by the Foul O and his crowd, can we occasionally see some stunning visual satire from your shop? I assume you have full privilege here on Hammy’s couch ™ and could post images?

I’m just worried that my back isn’t going to hold out. It’s been trying to glitch up all day.

Tedtam, we all reach the point where we need a walker — has your time come?

Me, I’ve reached the point where if I have a friend using a walker — especially a fancy walker with partial wheels, goody baskets, and some even have a built-in seat — I ask if I can try it out. Getting personal experience so I’ll know what features I want on mine….

We turned on our floor for the first time this season. We have radiant tubing in the floor, but it’s not tied to a thermostat yet, so we have to step into the mechanical room to turn the boiler on and off. It’s starting to feel toasty in here, and the floor has enough thermal mass to throw heat well into tomorrow, so I guess I’ll have to turn the boiler off soon.

At least the boiler room is finally closed off. Try going out there when a north wind is blowing through… brrrrrrr!

I assume you have full privilege here on Hammy’s couch ™ and could post images?

    Nope.

After LST closed up I really have not had any interest in formal political blogging. I had a good run of 5 years at LST and that time meant bunches to me but frankly I am burned out.

I occasionally update my own site with pictures I take here and there, but that is about the extent of my formal blogging. Maybe after Christmas I might open up a separate photoshop political blog. The presidential race will begin shortly after the new congress is seated and maybe by then I will catch my second wind.

    But thanks for the thought.

You have a couple good people posting front page here with Hammie. They write good stuff. I think it is good that the character and personality of Hammie’s blog is not a mirror of LST.
