Tuesday Free Speech Open Comments

Straight from BigHollywood.com:

My Dear Friends,
In light of, once again, the current crisis in regards to selective Free Speech – I wish to bring your attention to an article I wrote back in 2009.
I do not care what your politics are, but the issue of Free Speech is as important as Women, Gay or Civil Rights, and yet some of the same folk who may wear the banner of any of these issues cower and balk at the most fundamental right any of us have – TO SPEAK OUT or EXPRESS any point of view without fear of retaliation.
To blame the current riots and murders solely on a film that may offend, whether the film be accurate or not, is absurd. I have not seen the film nor do I care to. I also do not like attacks on any religion and think it in bad taste and shows a lack of respect for others and their beliefs.
I am a Catholic, and over the years there have been many films or cultural works that offended the Catholic religion, and while there may have been protests or condemnation of a particular piece there was no violence perpetrated.
Look, the town I live in is rife with wonderfully creative people pushing the envelope on sex, drugs and rock and roll. My town loves pissing up the leg on a variety of sacred taboos! And the flag of free speech is waved when there seems a criticism of those irreverent works of “art.”
We love shock and awe in our culture! Don’t we?
Now here is my problem. While we backslap the edgy for their envelop pushing, who is to say what in our culture led to Columbine, or more recently, the violent massacre in the movie theater in Colorado? Could we perhaps think that as John Hinckley was affected by a film, others are? Or that they can be affected even by video games for that matter?!
There is a concern for gay marriage, but imagine if some in the Middle East declared all gays be killed because it is against the tenets of Islam, as they have condemned Christians and Jews. Would those same people stand up for their views against riots and murder of gays as such acts have been committed against Christians and Jews, or would they be hiding and turning away from those who wish to love who they choose?
Would there be an outcry from Hollywood? Was there an outcry when Christian churches were burned or blown up in the countries that do not tolerate other religions? How many of you have seen the beheading on camera of a young Arab convert to Christianity because he was considered an infidel? Yes, I saw his head cut off with a dull knife while blood spurt from his neck! There would have been more of an outcry from Hollywood if it was the slaughter of a seal!
What about the filmmaker who was killed in Holland for his film dealing with the treatment of woman in certain countries? So, while certain things are not politically correct to take on, it appears that others are fair game – like attacks on Scientology or Christianity or any other religion except of course, the most intolerant of all.
Look, we do not have to condone denigrating a historical figure, but we must have the freedom to do so – without peril to the first and most fundamental amendment. And our lives!
My friends HEED this warning! I do not believe, personally, in offending anyone or any religion. I feel we must RESPECT all and live as brothers and sisters – Arab, Jew, Gentile, Buddhist, Scientologist, Mormon, Vegetarian, Smoker, Straight, Gay or Lesbian – whatever the race, color, creed or orientation. Imagine “Harry Potter” or “The Last Tempation of Christ” or “The Da Vinci Code ” and a ton of other films that happen to offend people of Faith, and instead of perhaps not going to see the films, people went and then started killing and rioting.
Wake up! We are in perilous times. Now, please read my previous article on the First Amendment.
God bless,
Robert Davi

    Cell phone use in public

After a very busy day, a commuter settled down in her seat and closed her eyes as the train departed Montreal for Hudson.
As the train rolled out of the station, the guy sitting next to her pulled out his cell phone and started talking in a loud voice: “Hi sweetheart it’s Eric, I’m on the train – yes, I know it’s the six thirty and not the four thirty , but I had a long meeting – no, honey, not with that floozie from the accounts office, with the boss. No sweetheart, you’re the only one in my life – yes, I’m sure, cross my heart” etc., etc.
Fifteen minutes later, he was still talking loudly , when the young woman sitting next to him, who was obviously angered by his continuous diatribe, yelled at the top of her voice: ”Hey, Eric, turn that stupid phone off and come back to bed!”
Eric doesn’t use his cell phone in public any longer……………………..

    Another reason I’m against tenure.
Teach your subject. Leave other crap outside the door. If the students want to discuss politics and the pros & cons of various candidates, there are plenty of opportunities to do so: privately with friends, with the prof outside of class, in the student clubs, guest speakers.
    Math = math
    NOT
    Math = politics
Along the same bent, performers should also leave their politics off the stage. Plenty of time to make your opinion known outside of the venue. If I go to see a performance, I don’t want to get an earful of your personal opinions.

Obama team tries to lower expectations for debates
Well, that makes sense. I think the entire nation has lowered expectations of him in general.

President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign doesn’t want to talk about what the Democrat is doing to prepare for the fall debates with Republican Mitt Romney. But aides are readily setting expectations – and not surprisingly, they want to keep them low for Obama while raising the stakes for Romney.

    …..And it’s powered by algae !!!!!

    Naw,….Improbability Drive!

The principle of generating small amounts of finite improbability by simply hooking the logic circuits of a Bambelweeny 57 Sub-Meson Brain to an atomic vector plotter suspended in a strong Brownian Motion producer (say a nice hot cup of tea) were of course well understood — and such generators were often used to break the ice at parties by making all the molecules in the hostess’s undergarments leap simultaneously one foot to the left, in accordance to the theory of indeterminacy.
Many respectable physicists said that they weren’t going to stand for this, partly because it was a debasement of science, but mostly because they didn’t get invited to those sorts of parties.
Another thing they couldn’t stand was the perpetual failure they encountered while trying to construct a machine which could generate the infinite improbability field needed to flip a spaceship across the mind-paralyzing distances between the farthest stars, and at the end of the day they grumpily announced that such a machine was virtually impossible.
Then, one day, a student who had been left to sweep up after a particularly unsuccessful party found himself reasoning in this way: If, he thought to himself, such a machine is a virtual impossibility, it must have finite improbability. So all I have to do in order to make one is to work out how exactly improbable it is, feed that figure into the finite improbability generator, give it a fresh cup of really hot tea… and turn it on!
He did this and was rather startled when he managed to create the long sought after golden Infinite Improbability generator. He was even more startled when just after he was awarded the Galactic Institute’s Prize for Extreme Cleverness he was lynched by a rampaging mob of respectable physicists who had realized that one thing they couldn’t stand was a smart-ass.

  23. Tedtam Avatar

Funny you should bring up the ID – here’s another comment:
    Wow, talk about mixed metaphors…

He’s actually talking a combination of a gravity style drive and a warp drive, but then they mix in Star Wars and Contact’s Worm Hole style of Hyperdrive, with graphics from a Dune style ‘Fold’ drive and then Hitchiker’s Infinite Improbability drive (which is sheer silly ness at our level of understanding of how the universe works). This is one messed up pseudo scientific romp.
I‘m not sure he could’ve squeezed in one more FTL drive system and not have the video just explode from the circulatory conundrum!

I’m off to run errands, the largest of which is the transfer of all my teaching supplies back to the church office building and getting my copies made. That will take a while, as I know I am dealing with teenagers, for whom taking notes is a foreign concept, so I use a LOT of handouts.
I buy my own paper. I figger it’s the least I can do, considering the number of copies needed. (50 students * 3 sheets per class MINIMUM * number of classes)

Do we care if China and Japan go to war over some islands?

    Short answer: yes.
The US and Japan have a mutual defense treaty, so if Japan were to be attacked, the US would be obligated to join in the hostilities. Things are less clear if Japan does the attacking, especially given that Japan is bound by its constitution to only have a self-defense force and not an expeditionary army.

I officially do not believe the polls now. There is no way.

The national poll of likely voters shows Obama leading 47.7 percent to 42 percent, and indicates that Romney is not polling well enough among some conservative demographic groups: NASCAR fans, evangelicals, and the so-called “Walmart voters.”
    snip
He narrowly trails Obama among self-identified NASCAR fans, 44 percent to 43 percent.

For those who remember when America had a manned space launch capability before it was prematurely cancelled in 2006, the Shuttle Endeavour atop its carrier will be making several low passes over Houston tomorrow before landing at Ellington Field for viewing.
It is on its way to its new home in California.

On Wednesday, the SCA/Endeavour combo is planned to fly approximately 1,500 feet above various areas of Houston, Clear Lake and Galveston – including JSC — between about 9 and 10:30 a.m. as it arrives in Houston from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Endeavour’s Landing at Ellington is set for about 10:45 a.m. The specific route and timing of Endeavour’s flight will depend on weather and operational constraints.
