Tuesday Unemployment Stats Open Comments

Mort Zuckerman, publisher of US News & World Report, has been on a bit of a tear lately about unemployment. He wrote a column last Friday for the Wall Street Journal, explaining how the “improvement” in jobless numbers last week was really no such thing.

Don’t be fooled by the headline unemployment number of 8.1% announced on Friday. The reason the number dropped to 8.1% from 8.3% in July was not because more jobs were created, but because more people quit looking for work.

There’s two ways to increase the value of a fraction – increase the numerator (the good way) or decrease the denominator (the bad way). Guess what Obama’s policies have done?

96,000—that’s how many new jobs were added last month, well short of the anemic 125,000 predicted by analysts, and dramatically less than the (still paltry) 139,000 the economy had been averaging in 2012.

In order to have a true net growth in employment, the number of new jobs created each month needs to be around 350,000 in order to absorb the new entrants into the workforce. These would be the high school and college graduates who are experiencing the appallingly high unemployment rates in their demographic these days.

The alarming numbers proliferate the deeper you look: 40.7% of the people counted as unemployed have been out of work for 27 weeks or more—that’s 5.2 million “long-term” unemployed. Fewer Americans are at work today than in April 2000, even though the population since then has grown by 31 million.

That is why the unemployment rate is so artificially low. If the same number of people were counted in the available workforce as in 2009, the unemployment rate would be well into double-digits.
Zuckerman posits some concrete steps he would implement in order to improve things. I only agree with #2 to a partial extent and #3. The others are really feel-good options, although they are still better than anything Obama has even considered, let alone actually done.

Of course there’s always CNN; Mitt Romney would lead eight in unskewed data from newest CNN/ORC poll.

The latest CNN/ORC poll released today shows a wider lead for President Obama than the previous CNN/ORC poll but it is doubly skewed. It massively under-samples independents while it also over-samples Democratic voters. The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll official reports Obama at 52 to percent and Mitt Romney at 46 percent. Unskewed, the data reveals a 53 percent to 45 percent lead for Romney.
This new CNN/ORC survey, unlike many other analyzed, not only over-samples Democratic voters, but also massively under-samples independent voters, to produce a result more favorable to Barack Obama. This survey’s sample includes 397 registered Republicans and 441 registered Democrats. But the survey included a total of 822 registered voters, leaving only 37 independent voters at most. The survey clearly under-sampled independent and Republican voters.

    This is enlightening.

“The analysis, believed to be the first systematic analysis of male and female economists’ views on a wide variety of policy issues, surveyed hundreds of members of the American Economic Association. The research team found that despite having similar training and adherence to core economic principles and methodology, male and female economists hold different opinions on particular current economic issues and specific economic policies including educational vouchers, health insurance and policies toward labor standards.”

    Among their findings:

    1. By 20 percentage points, women economists are more likely to disagree that either the United States or the European Union has excessive government regulations.
    4. Female economists are 32 percentage points more likely to agree with making the U.S. income distribution more equal.
    9. Compared to female economists, men exhibit greater support for reducing tariffs.

Mark Perry at Carpe Diem was shocked at the results:

Exhibit A: If men and women both study microeconomics and international trade theory and men exhibit greater support for free trade and reducing tariffs, can that be explained by anything other than significant gender differences in thinking, logic and reasoning?

Putting the foreign aid for Pahkeestahn on the chopping block if the man is not released is just the first step, and the paki’s had better decide which direction they wanna travel or else it could get real ugly real fast. I like this idea and it needs to be applied throughout the whole concept of foreign aid.
I hope there are more up and coming Rs who have a similar mindset to Rand Paul. He may be a good choice in 2016 if RMoney goes moderate or 2020 if he does not.

12 Shannon – Excellent article. I posed these questions but figured I’d throw them up here too:

…the individualism of moral people creates community among neighbors…

What happens when we as a society become more and more amoral? Does the Smith/de Tocqueville/Reagan model break down?

  15. Tedtam Avatar

I think that as a society becomes more amoral, everything breaks down. It becomes all about #1, what feels good as opposed to what is good, and the glue that holds society together begins to come loose.
I see a dictator arising from that mess, as the people either (1) clamor for some order to the chaos, or (2) have provided a perfect milieu for a strong personality to step in and decide what is best for society.

Today, the islimist camel dung mooslime brotherhood, stormed the US Embassy in Cairo, tore down the US flag and replaced it with a black flag. Normal screams about how the pedophile is a prophet and the moon god they worship is the only one, death to Israel, death to USA, yadda, yadda, etc.
At this point, how can any Jew vote D? How can anyone with an IQ over 85 vote D?

de Toqueville (and others) maintain that the experiment will fail without the moral thread.

I was being somewhat rhetorical in my questioning. I think our moral thread is fraying in no small part because of values espoused by Bobolicious and his Cult of Coexistence/CotR. Abortion rights has devolved into a culture of death where euthanasia and suicide are considered acceptable. Rights for teh gheys have devolved into a redefinition of marriage and family, where prominent Hollywood producers openly question the stimatization of incest, and where prominent doctors proclaim the morality of “after-birth abortions”.
The only question in my mind is: Can the model be saved?

  21. Bonecrusher Avatar

#21 Hammy: Short of a bloody civil war, prolly not. This is because any attempt to reintroduce morality will immediately invoke the crap of ‘separation of church and state’, ‘so you want to have the Christian version of the Taliban here in the USA’ and similar such nonsense from those of the CoTR, D, and others. Hollyweird, all the “academics” and the entire leadership of the D party in addition to all the union heads will unite to fight against any such arbitrary standard from the moral right.

Each embassy has a small detachment of US Marines.
Perhaps you could find one and voice your displeasure with thier performance.
It might be difficult because there are only 1000 of them detailed to protect 150 embassies across the globe 24 hours a day, which means there were less than 10 at the embassy in Cairo facing that mob.
Their main mission is interior security of the buildings, particularly the classified equipment and documents.
IIRC, the last time a Marine Security Detachment used deadly force to protect embassy personnel was when the embassy in Peking was stormed during the Boxer Rebellion in 1901. They held out there for 55 days until a relief force arrived.

An armed mob protesting over a film they said offended Islam, attacked the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi on Tuesday and set fire to the building, witnesses reported.

    /snip
Contacted by AFP, a US State Department official in Washington said US officials were still seeking information about the situation in Benghazi.
Asked whether the attack in Libya and the earlier demonstration against the US mission in Egypt could be connected, the official said it was unclear yet if the protests had been coordinated.

I would posit that the very Constitution that established the Republic, is in itself amoral. By establishing a form of government not beholden to any natural law, it pretty much guarantees that the governed are free to determine their own morality.
I no more fear for the republic now than I would at any other time in our history. I see no Mule upsetting the balance of psychohistory. 😉

I can understand why Governor Romney fears the military prowess of these guys.

Aleksandr Georgievich Semenov patented an efficiently disgusting weapon system. Using his method, soldiers inside an armoured tank, under battle conditions, can dispose of their biological waste products in an unwasteful way: encasing those materials, together with explosives, in artillery shells that they then fire at the enemy.

With regards to the lede about unemployment, it appears even Fox wants to get in on the act.
And they said home schooled kids don’t do well in ‘rithmatic.

Fox used a dishonest comparison of two different measures of unemployment to suggest the unemployment rate has nearly doubled since President Obama took office.
During a segment criticizing the Obama administration for its messaging on the economy, a Fox & Friends graphic claimed that the “real unemployment rate” had increased from 7.8% in 2009 to 14.7% now:
But in order to make the claim that unemployment had increased from 7.8% to 14.7% during Obama’s time in office, Fox had to conflate two different statistics and completely distort Obama’s jobs record.

They should apologize. There are folks who really believe what these knuckleheads put on television.
