Monday “Power Up” Open Comments

I remember a conversation I had some time ago with Aggie Beau and Lovely Daughter. Aggie Beau uses his smart phone constantly. I asked how often he charges it up, and he said at least four times a day. what if he’s not conveniently around an outlet? His phone could run out of charge! OH, Say it isn’t so! (dramatic back of hand on forehead pose) Technology strikes again – with a solution.

Carroll, a physicist and head of Wake Forest University’s Center for Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials, was discussing this problem last year with his 10-year-old daughter, Lauren, when she came up with a suggestion: What if Carroll could design something that harnessed the heat from someone’s hand, or from the phone itself, to give a cell-phone battery more power? Carroll agreed that would be pretty cool.
Last month, Carroll’s lab unveiled a fabric that does just that. Called Power Felt, it generates electricity from heat. Wrap your cell phone in Power Felt, and it feeds off your body heat to recharge while it’s in your pocket.

The uses could be legion:

Carroll is a lifelong Southerner, and he’s acutely aware of how powerful summer heat can be. He says Power Felt installed just under the roof of a house could be used to power household appliances. Lay it on the floor of a car and it could use the heat generated from sitting in a midday parking lot to run air conditioning and the radio. In an electric or a hybrid car, the Power Felt might even boost mileage.

Of course, it’s nanotubes again.

The challenge for his team, says Carroll, was to create something that was electrically conductive – the way metal is – and thermally insulating – the way cloth can be. The solution was to imprint carbon nanotubes onto a woven mat of plastic fibers.
Since it takes relatively few carbon nanotubes to give the fabric thermoelectric properties, the cost is reasonable. Carroll estimates that, at a large scale, Power Felt could be fabricated for as little as a dollar for a swatch big enough to cover a cell phone.

Needless to say, the Pentagon, along with a slew of investors, are interested in his invention.
I hope he makes a buttload of money off of it. Good for him. But he needs to share it with his daughter, since she was his inspiration. And I’ll bet she brought him grilled cheese sammiches while he was working, too.

It’s truly amazing how far battery technology/ unit efficiency has come. Remember the old cell phones and cordless phone batteries? They didn’t hold a charge long to begin with, but then developed “memory” and had to be cycled dead every once in a while. We had a HP digital camera once that wouldn’t take 10 pictures before going dead.

I read recently where someone had developed a new kind of lithium-based battery that used nano-@&&)(;/ technology that increased energy density by at least an order of magnitude. Something like that would allow a laptop to run for a couple of days and make electric cars usable.

Our fine friends of the TSA are constantly innovating. A while back they started forcefully interrogating every passenger to get them to spill important personal information.

    The question?

    “What is your name?” 🙄

We are also under a snow globe ban. 🙄

The latest? They check your boarding pass again right before they irradiate you, in case it changed in the 20 feet since they checked it the last time, but don’t ask for ID. They then hand you a yellow card with “checked” scrawled on the back in red magic marker and printed with the top or bottom half of the form that was originally printed.

Trouble is, if your boarding pass is not hard-copy but is on your phone, it’s being x-rayed so they don’t give you a yellow card until you retrieve your phone.

    I feel so very safe.

President Obama: On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it’s important for him to give me space.

President Medvedev: Yeah, I understand. I understand your message about space. Space for you…

President Obama: This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.

President Medvedev: I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.

    Real folk translation:

Obama: “Dude, just chill out until after my vote fraud and racism campaign wins me the next election. Then I won’t have to worry about being re-elected and can run roughshod over the Constitution again and give you guys exactly what you want. After all, America shouldn’t be the most powerful country. It might as well be you.”

I heard on FoxNews this am that some employers are demanding the password to social media (facebook, twitter) of their employees/new hires as a condition of employment. I find this to be a gross violation of privacy and no good can come of the practice. The information on private sections of Facebook can and do fall in the “do not ask” category for employers, the password access would expose that info.

I want to see “October Baby”. I had not planned on seeing “21 Jump Street,” since it seemed to be such a cheesy knockoff of the original tv series. “Mirror, Mirror” had only blipped briefly on my radar screen. Lovely is very excited about “Hunger Games,” so I’m sure she’ll be seeing it in the movie theater.

More liberal progressive tolerance in action.

According to information obtained by Belling, a custodian working for a private contractor at Whitewater (Wisconsin) High School was recently fired by her employer after two school employees, including the supervisor of custodians, demanded that she remove a pro-Scott Walker sign from her car and she refused.
    /snip
In a separate memo obtained by Belling, Diversified Manager Joan Dedolphconfirmed that school employees demanded that the pro-Walker sign be removed. The good news is that Diversified eventually reinstated Taylor and reassigned her to another school district. The bad news is that she had to be reassigned just because she chose to exercise her freedom of expression.

A quick drive through any Wisconsin school parking lot will reveal dozens of “recall Walker” bumper stickers. Nobody is demanding that the owners of those vehicles lose their jobs.

This is at least a partial transcript of the SCOTUS hearing on Obamacare. The cases that are cited and the arcane/obscure wording combined with the sheer volume of crapola in the Code of Federal Regulations brings me to the conclusion that the entire code needs to be chunked and that includes the IRS code and we start over from scratch. One can only modify, tweek and adjust so much until the thing that results from same is no longer an efficiently viable entity. THe CFR and Tax Code are prime examples. Time to start over.

The response should be that its a movie that shows what hapens when there’s too much government—-and what the government uses to control the people.

    From TT’s link above:

The president says the games give the citizens a sense of “hope.” But it isn’t that the president is being altruistic. Rather, he notes that, if you give people in even the most dire of circumstances “hope,” you can control them completely and make them put up with anything.

Although no one can claim to be completely objective, restricting sources of information to those you agree with does not help the effort.

I consider neither term to be monolithic, or consistent across all those who identify with those groups. Just look at all the calls of “true conservative” or “real republican” that have been tossed around during this hilarious and entertaining primary season.

They just go to be entertained, watch people kill other people, see the anti-heros save the day that type of stuff completely miss the under lying moral of the story as it were. The movie in question, okay I get it, government bad, uber heroine type female lady girl type person steps up, kicks but and takes names. We already know the gubment is evil so all that is left is seeing if there is some new way to mutilate the human body that we have not seen in all the slasher movies. Maybe even get to see some nekkidness. Whoohoo. Not.

For me to see anything new in the movies I would have to watch the old genre of chick flicks and coming of age movies, I ain’t see many of those.

    Raymond Ibrahim, March 14, 2012:

According to several Arabic news sources, last Monday, Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, declared that it is “necessary to destroy all the churches of the region.”

While the facts of this account speak for themselves, consider further:

Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah is not just some random Muslim hating on churches. He is the Grand Mufti of the nation that brought Islam to the world. Moreover, he is the President of the Supreme Council of Ulema [Islamic scholars] and Chairman of the Standing Committee for Scientific Research and Issuing of Fatwas. Accordingly, when it comes to what Islam teaches, his words are immensely authoritative.

Considering the hysteria that besets the West whenever non-authoritative individuals offend Islam—for instance, a fringe, unknown pastor—imagine what would happen if a Christian counterpart to the Grand Mufti, say the Pope, were to declare that all mosques in Italy must be destroyed; imagine the nonstop Western media frenzy that would erupt, all the shrill screams of “intolerance” and “bigot,” demands for apologies if not resignation, nonstop handwringing by sensitive politicians, and worse.

Yet the Grand Mufti—the highest Islamic law authority of our “friend-and-ally” Saudi Arabia—gets a free pass when he incites Muslims to destroy churches, not that any extra incitement is needed (nary a month goes by without several churches being bombed and destroyed throughout the Islamic world). In fact, at the time of this writing, I have not seen this story, already some three days old, translated on any English news source, though “newsworthy” stories are often translated in mere hours.

Correctamundo, that is a big part of it. Seeing as how those who profess Christianity/Judaisim constitute the large majority of the population here in the USA and they hate what system that has wrought (capitalism, the ultimate anti-socialism) they always tend to fight against it. Another part is that Saudi Royal Oil money buys influence, they own part of FoxNews, and prolly some other networks. Good afternoon Hamsters. Another misty moisty morning and 57 at 6, but clearing rapidly by 8. Lovely until early afternoon when the temp topped 80 and made doing outside stuff start to become uncomfortable. Too early to be this warm.

Driveway, sidewalk, patio, roof, and flowerbeds were cleaned of leaves and live oak blossoms yesterday. By this morning there was a carpet of faded blossoms on the sidewalk under three live oaks and a good portion of the driveway under two large ones. Drat, they are everywhere and get into/onto everything. Pollen count is up again. We turned the fountain off and drained it again until this menace is over.

We don’t do facebook or become anyone’s friends on facebook. Too intrusive. The phone works quite well as does e-mail. 🙂 So does face-to-face conversation, which appears to be a lost art among teens and tweens.

I think the Blackfoots populated this area before the RCMP ran them all off

Actually, the reason the North West Mounted Police, forerunner of the Royal Canadian Mounted, were created because of requests from the Blackfoot Nation for protection from American Whiskey traders. The NWMP came out to Alberta and kicked them varmonts out. Sarcee Trail in Calgary is also named for one of the tribes. Just west of Calgary – Bragg Creek is a large reservation of Blackfeet. They got there name, they are actually Soix I think, because when the first white eyes came west and met them there had been a prairie fire and as they were barefoot, they had black feet. So the story goes. Nice hotel the Blackfoot. I am in Red Deer, 90 miles north, for the next couple of weeks and it is snowing here. Of course I can’t post a picture.

Does anyone understand WHY the MSM does not want to report on Muslim extremism/fanaticism?

IMO, pretty much for the same reason they don’t report on other loons like the Westboro Church or the Maccabees of Migron. The Grand Mufti does not control the churches in Kuwait and asking the GM the question is like asking Biily Graham if God hears the prayers of Jews or Cardinal DiNardo if the souls of [non-full term babies] go to Heaven; we all know what they will say, why belabor the point? We all know the GM’s answer and it’s a pointless question when the answer is known. That the language is Arabic doesn’t add to sound bite reporting doesn’t help much either.
The European Bishops have spun up on this and rightly so, hence it appearing in the press.
FWIW, I believe this topic came up here earlier for discussion as part of a Kuwaiti legislator’s attempt to tear down churches in Kuwait.

An interesting decision by the Supreme Court today. At stake is whether the Congress can over rule the executive branch’s primacy in areas of foreign policy. Specifically an individual wanted his birthplace listed as Jerusalem, Israel on his natural American born abroad papers, while State Department policy is to only accept Jerusalem with no country.

The lower courts didn’t want the headache and the Supreme Court’s 8 – 1 decision was to send it back and force them to make a decision.

They’re brand new, have a warranty from Auto-Ordnance, and the one we had shot like a champ, averaging groups right at 2 inches at 100 yardds., even with rudimentary iron sights. Out of more than 500 rounds fired, there were no malfunctions of any kind with G.I. magazines. Magtech’s affordable 110-gr. FMJ loading in particular impressed us at the range.

Professor from 2010 who had the temerity to inquire whether James O’Keefe (the Breibart video guy) Project Veritas “non-profit” had actually filed the necessary forms for tax exemption.

Perhaps the greatest is that IRS form 13909, the one I filled out when Project Veritas was breaking the law, has a little checkbox on it that reads: “I am concerned that I might face retaliation or retribution if my identity is disclosed.” I did not check the box, choosing instead to be open about my actions. It is because of this choice to reveal my identity despite IRS’ offer to try to shield me from retaliation, that I face retribution. Retribution by a man who masks his identity so he can smear his enemies. And retribution from his organization, which claims to strive for “… a more ethical and transparent society.”

The AP stumbles onto the truth of the matter here:

But Roberts said the question before the court is not a political one.

“The federal courts are not being asked to supplant a foreign policy decision of the political branches with the courts’ own unmoored determination of what the United States policy toward Jerusalem should be,” Roberts said. “Instead, Zivotofsky requests that the courts enforce a specific statutory right. To resolve his claim, the judiciary must decide if Zivotofsky’s interpretation of the statute is correct, and whether the statute is constitutional. This is a familiar judicial exercise.”

The passport restriction applies to people born anywhere in Jerusalem, including the hospital in the western part where Menachem was born in 2002.

In late 2002, Naomi Zivotofsky, Menachem’s mother, showed up at the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv to get her baby a U.S. passport, one that listed Israel as his birthplace. After State Department officials refused her request, the family sued.

The family argues that the State Department has made an exception for U.S citizens born in Taiwan. Their passports may list their place of birth as Taiwan, rather than China. They also note that the State Department gives people born before Israel’s creation in 1948 the option to say they were born in Palestine.

Roberts is correct. The Bush and Obama adminstrations have both refused to enforce a law passed by the House and Senate. Now it will be resolved by the lower courts and Congress as it should be according to the Constitution.

Ah, some Hunger Games talk. The movie is about teens killing each other because that has become society’s tradition to “honor” the victory of the rebellion which ocurred about 75 years earlier. So, the movie does have a “message”, if you will, about how big government can get relly bad.

The movie is enjoyable for different reasons. The cimenatography is spectacular. Forest scenes are spendid and shots in the “ghetto” are captivating as well. I was completely drawn into the world of the movie. “The Caplital” is ap lace I can best describe asa Matri Gras 24/7. People flaunt their fashions and carry about carefree and superficially concerned for values of family and love. It reminds me of middle evil Paris nobles whose only care is for themselves and to outwardly impress others. the Ghetto reminded me of Nazi Germany. The simple clothes ofthe residents, them being rounded up for being chosen for the Hunger Games and of course, the police on site to make sure all follow their proper roles and that all instruction is carried out with haste.

If you’re an emotional person you’ll need to beware tha this move is absolutely remarkable in capturing the emotions of the characters. The closeup camera angles and slow paced acting brings out the human emotions convincingly. You fully experience fear, dread, love, happiness, anxiety, anger, and all the suspense which accompanies each of these emotions. The fighting scenes are brutal but the movie itself did a very good job to avoid graphic shots of vilence and I for one appreciated that.

The hero is female though I agree that caling this a woman empowerment film is ridiculous. The best part of the heroine is that she simply does not allow the rules of society to dictate what she does andwhat she knows is wrong to do. Yup, it’s that simple and such a scenario has been told and played thousands and thousands of times in films.

It is a very good movie and I do recommend it to those interested in seeing it.

Zimmerman was on his way to the grocery store when he spotted Trayvon walking through his gated community.

Trayvon was visiting his father’s fiancée, who lived there. He had been suspended from school in Miami after being found with an empty marijuana baggie. Miami schools have a zero-tolerance policy for drug possession.

Zimmerman called police and reported a suspicious person, describing Trayvon as black, acting strangely and perhaps on drugs.

Zimmerman got out of his SUV to follow Trayvon on foot. When a dispatch employee asked Zimmerman if he was following the 17-year-old, Zimmerman said yes. The dispatcher told Zimmerman he did not need to do that.

There is about a one-minute gap during which police say they’re not sure what happened.

Zimmerman told them he lost sight of Trayvon and was walking back to his SUV when Trayvon approached him from the left rear, and they exchanged words.

Trayvon asked Zimmerman if he had a problem. Zimmerman said no and reached for his cell phone, he told police.

Trayvon then said, “Well, you do now” or something similar and punched Zimmerman in the nose.

Zimmerman fell to the ground and Trayvon got on top of him and began slamming his head into the sidewalk, he told police.

    Zimmerman began yelling for help.

Several witnesses heard those cries, and there’s been a dispute about from whom they came: Zimmerman or Trayvon.

Lawyers for Trayvon’s family say it was Trayvon, but police say their evidence indicates it was Zimmerman.

One witnesses, who has since talked to local television news reporters, told police he saw Zimmerman on the ground with Trayvon on top, pounding him and was unequivocal that it was Zimmerman who was crying for help.

Zimmerman then shot Trayvon once in the chest from very close range, according to authorities.

When police arrived less than two minutes later, Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose, had a swollen lip and had bloody lacerations to the back of his head.

That’s quite a bit different than the storyline percolating through the media for the past couple of weeks. Many of the details are still in dispute, and the conduct of the investigating officers is still open to question, but this account makes it seem a bit less outrageous that Zimmerman wasn’t arrested immediately. In fact, there was some effort made to plant the idea that reports of Zimmerman’s injuries were fabricated by the police after the fact, but that is not true. It’s all in the initial reports, which the Sanford police department has now made available to the public.

It’s become so abundantly clear to me be now that Martin initiated the fight, visciously attacked Zimmerman and Zimmerman acted in complete self-defense. Now that we see that Zimmerman said the peron seemed to be on drugs and the fact that htere was no way Zimmerman could have known that Martin was suspended from school for bringing an empty bag of marijuana to school collaborating the accuracy of Zimmerman saying he spotted someone which looked like he was on drugs.

I have aboslutely no favorable comment to make regarding the race pimps Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, and the New Black Panthers. Their sole interest is to rile up racism inthe country for their own private gains. Their actions are worthless and whatever results from their effotrs will ony bring harm and damage to others.

I’ve told my kids not to bury my money (hopefully I’ll have some by then). Cheap coffin.

    Amen to that.

    And here’s this:

It was announced by Mikhail Muhammad, leader of a small militant organisation called the New Black Panther Party, who said he was seeking up to 10,000 black men willing to form a militia to find Mr Zimmerman and administer what they regard as justice.

Asked if he was inciting violence, Mr Muhammad said: “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” To the sound of cheers from followers, who wore black uniforms, he promised: “If the government won’t do the job, we’ll do it.”

When i first heard ofthe New Black Panthers about a year or so ago they were dismissed as a small group of radicals. That may be but I always had a sense that they were a group to keep an eye on. They can and will cause harm when given the opportunity t odo so.
