Well, I’ve returned from my journey to Vernon.. Future son-in-law hails from this town, and we spent a lot of time with him and his family. Aggie Beau and Lovely took us on a tour of the town. AB showed us the guar manufacturing plant, where he says most of the guar production in this country comes from. He said guar bean is so stringy and is mostly cellulose, it’s not much use for anything else. It’s a good thing that the gum is so useful, else it’d be a pretty useless plant.
We also visited his cousin’s house and I was able to make new friend – his 3 year old son, “Billy”. We all went out to see the baby goats in their pen – I might put up some pics later, if I get a chance. They were cute. And yes, I know they’re called “kids”. “Baby goat” is more fun to say. And I wouldn’t want to confuse the audience on where “Billy” and his baby sister were kept. “Billy” and I didn’t bond much until they came over to AB’s house, where I was able to read a book to him. I don’t read as much as re-enact the stories, and he learned how to roll around when the main character did, and make a tent over his head with his hands. After that, we were golden.
I was up late Thursday night, taking care of stuff, and so Friday morning we got a late start. It was about nine hours’ driving up there, and Handsome helped with some of it so I could close my eyes for a bit. Friday and Saturday night I was just unable to go to sleep. By Sunday morning, I was dragging, and Handsome again drove for several hours to help me out. I finally got some sleep last night. It wasn’t totally uninterrupted, but when I slept, I slept hard. I’m still behind on my rest, but at least I’m functional.
There was a lot of wind. I remembered wind from out trip to Lubbock last year, but until you experience it, you forget what a strong, constant wind can feel like. They are still behind on their rainfall, so I’m sure the wind doesn’t help any.
The bridal shower went well. “Billy” wanted help, and a second kid, “Joshua” wanted to help, too, so I focused my efforts on feeding the gifts one at a time to the young boys, who carried them to Lovely and Aggie Beau so that they could open them, then taking the unwrapped gifts and restacking them on the table. The two boys were also in charge of putting the wrapping paper in a trash bag. The couple accumulated much in the way of household goods, and the boys did a good job. For most of the time. “Billy’s” attention span was finally reached, and he began taking the paper out of the trash bag and throwing himself into the pile. Kids!
I met a lot of really nice people. Grandpa Willy is a hoot, and all of the relatives were fun to hang out with. Aggie Beau’s mom was a great hostess. As tired as I was, the company and the schedule kept me going.

Guar Gum: Back in the 80’s when I was in the freight biz, lots of guar gum came via Karachi Pakistan and a lot of it went to a company in Kenedy TX, called Aqualon. My competition at the time, Maersk, got the lions share of that biz. The gum is used in items from chewing gum to ice cream to paint; I am sure that there are many other uses for said product. I had no idea that guar gum was actually being grown here in the USA.

This is an interesting story in the Israeli English language paper Haaretz (translation: The Land)
HEADLINE: Israel, Kurdish fighters destroyed Iran nuclear facility, email released by WikiLeaks claims
The mega-leaks website, WikiLeaks, has partnered with the hackers cooperative Anonymous, to publish internal emails of the American strategic intelligence company Stratfor. In one of the hacked emails, Stratfor officials discuss information obtained from one of their sources who reports that Israeli commandos, in cooperation with Kurdish fighters, have destroyed Iranian nuclear installations. We know that one of the facilities has suffered a major explosion a few weeks ago, as far as the others . . . . .?

G’Morning All
Good post TT. The only thing to hold back the wind out there is a bob wire fence, and it’s down most of the time.
I used to do a lot of business in Amarillo. On one of those windy day’s the Southwest pilot made a pretty bumpy landing. The stewardess came on the intercom with, “Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Amarillo. Please remain in your seats with your seatbelts fastened while the Captain taxis what’s left of our airplane to the gate!”

Documents: PETA kills more than 95 percent of pets in its care
Published: 11:29 PM 02/24/2012
By Alexandra Myers – The Daily CallerDocuments published online this month show that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an organization known for its uncompromising animal-rights positions, killed more than 95 percent of the pets in its care in 2011.
In a February 16 statement, the Center said PETA killed 1,911 cats and dogs last year, finding homes for only 24 pets.
His organization runs PETAkillsAnimals.com, which reports that in 2010 a resident of Virginia called PETA and asked if there was an animal shelter at the group’s headquarters. PETA responded that there was not.
The Virginian, the website reports, then called his state’s agriculture department. Dr. Daniel Kovich investigated, and conducted an inspection of PETA’s headquarters.
“The facility does not contain sufficient animal enclosures to routinely house the number of animals annually reported as taken into custody,” Kovich concluded in his report.
Kovich also determined that PETA employees kill 84 percent of the animals in their custody within 24 hours of receiving them.
“[PETA’s] primary purpose,” Kovich wrote, “is not to find permanent adoptive homes for animals.”

Morning all. Here is something else to worry about for those who, like myself, buy a vehicle and drive it till it drops.
Air bags — driver and front seat passenger air bags — have been mandatory in cars since the mid-1990s. That means there are now millions of older cars on the road with air bags. These air bags are ticking time bombs, financially speaking (and otherwise; more on that below) because of the ever-less-favorable ratio between the value of the car itself and the cost to repair the car if the air bags go off.

#5 – I’ve had the unique visual perspective of working right at the “approach end” of a live runway (I was an HB Zachry equip operator at DFW during the construction of their longest NW / SE runway on the west side – during the period (mid 80s) when Delta 191 crashed.
When those pilots are dealing with hefty cross winds on final approach – the amount / degree of yaw off of the straight ahead plane is pretty scary to observe! (my guesstimate as much as 15-20 degrees)……………I’ve even seen some touchdown only 1 set of wheels (left or right accordingly) to grab the ground and “straighten out abruptly” before the other side makes contact with the pavement – guaranteed to make even the seasoned airline passenger pucker a bit…………

I had my private pilot license back in my younger years. I can tell you it’s more spooky in the front seat doing it than on the ground watching it.

Yeah, but we follow speed limits.
And – we took Highway 6 up instead of I-45. It’s prettier and not that much slower, since it veers more left from the beginning, rather than head into Dallas and hang a left.
AND – I missed a turn outside of Wichita Falls that would’ve saved us some time. I was so tired, that when we stopped for dinner in WF I put my head on the table rather than think to bring in the map book. For some reason, I thought that Vernon was on the interstate leading out of town, and not up another state highway. My eyes were burning so much that I didn’t want to look at anything. We still got there, but we had to go through the badlands and drive about 30 extra miles. Handsome liked it though – we saw some deer (thought I might hit one, actually) and a coyote.
But still, 5½ hours? Nah, we follow speed limits. I can’t afford any tickets.

I heard the comedian/humorist with the last name of Stine of Fox this morning repeat something I have said here and other places for over a year:
The left gravitates towards Hollywood and vice versa because they both are very good at pretending to be something they are not.
Neither has any moral foundation and changes position with the wind or whatever happens to be in fashion.

Bad Landing Story:
Hubby and I went to St. Thomas for our honeymoon. The airport at St. Thomas was, at the time, the third most dangerous in the world. The landing strip was extended out into the ocean, and takeoff was directly into the side of a mountain. Yes, into a mountain. A tall mountain, actually.Let’s recap that shall we? As you land, you see nothing but water. Unless you’re the pilot, and then you see a huge hunk of rock.
As we’re landing, we caught a cross wind. Back left wheel touch. (The wheel was near my seat. I saw wing and beautiful blue water. Up close.) Bounce. Back right wheel touch. A few gasps from that side of the plane. Bounce back to left. Pretty water. Front wheel bounces. Both back wheels finally connect. Front wheel bounces once more, then all three wheels are on the pavement. We all check our shorts for leakage. As we disembark, we look out to see the line of dump trucks, like a line of ants, weaving their way down the side of the mountain. They were in the process of removing the top of the rock. And we were thinking “We have to take off into that thing. I hope they work fast!”

Been there, done that.
Used to be at St. Thomas:
Landing:
1. They calculated the fuel supply to “just enough” to get there with 30 minutes reserve.
2. They would start reversing the engines while still airbourne when landing.
3. They landed with full flaps rather than 45degree flaps.
4. They lock up the brakes as soon as both main gear were on the ground, no “toe tapping” to reduce speed gently.Take-off:
1. Total weight and weight distribution were carefully calculated. At times a lot of the baggage was ferried to St. Croix and picked up while re-fueling.
2. There was “just enough” fuel to get to St. Croix for re-fueling.
3. Engines were revved up against the brakes, no rolling starts.
4. They would taxi out to the runway and a tractor would back them up so the main gear was touching the grass. -

One of the routes I use to go to Lawton and the Wichita Mountains. There’s a cut off you can take just north of Reisel that will take you to just north of Waco to avoid that traffic.
Best thing about that route is the Czech Stop in West. Best. Kolaches. On. Earth.
If I ever win the lottery I’m going to try to buy that place. The parking lot is always full, no matter what the day of the week or time of day.

Oh, BTW – the speed limits are 70 for most of the way now. Nice.
I did drive Handsome around the TAMU campus, and we found my very first apartment that I lived in when I started college. It was nice to be able to share some stories with him and share some of that history. The campus has changed so much, I almost didn’t recognize it. I see the business college is now on the west campus – it used to be on the main campus. The west campus used to be primarily ag buildings and classes. Not anymore. The student fitness center is there, the business college, and a whole lotta stuff that I am completely at a loss to explain. We couldn’t drive into the campus, like we used to be able to do, and we didn’t have time to take a walking tour, so I couldn’t get close enough to decipher the building signs.
Aggie Beau has told me that the Memorial Student Center is all torn up and being rebuilt, and not very wisely, either. He’s a little ticked off about it. Some things just shouldn’t be messed with. The MSC shouldn’t be changed – it’s a very special place to Aggies.
But then, if they knew that I was Queen, they would have asked my permission first. Slackers.

Lovely Daughter and Aggie Beau told us we needed to stop at the Koffee Kup diner in Hico on our way home. We saw the place, but both Handsome and I just wanted to get home, and the parking lot was full with more cars trying to get a spot. We just kept on going. Maybe someday we’ll take a day trip and explore that area.
But I hear the Koffee Kup has the BEST pie.

Continue on Highway 6 through Waco, past I-20. It doubles with 281 into Wichita Falls, then we take (or are supposed to take) 287 into Vernon.

We thought about taking I-35, but Handsome pointed out that we’d be hitting rush hour in Ft. Worth, so we stayed on Hwy 6. It’s much more calm a drive, and since I was running on empty….

BTW – what’s with all the donkeys/mules/burros that we saw on the way? Not until we got past Hearne, I think, but after that, we saw a lot of them. I hear they are good protectors for livestock – is that why I saw them with cows and horses all the time?

Act of Valor did very well at the Box Office this weekend.
An action film featuring active-duty Navy SEALs captured the weekend box office crown, earning $24.7 million in North America, according to early estimates.
“Act of Valor,” distributed by Relativity Media LLC and produced for $12 million, opened on 3,039 screens in its first weekend in theaters. The film, about a Navy SEAL team on a mission to rescue a kidnapped Central Intelligence Agency officer, was a hit with men, drawing a 71% male audience.

Media Matters chief David Brock paid a former domestic partner $850,000 after being threatened with damaging information involving the organization’s donors and the IRS – a deal that Brock later characterized as a blackmail payment, according to legal documents obtained by FoxNews.com.
In an acrimonious lawsuit settled at the end of last year, Brock accused William Grey of making repeated threats to expose him to the “scorn or ridicule of his employees, donors and the press in demanding money and property.” Brock claimed in legal papers that he sold a Rehoboth Beach, Del., home he once shared with Grey in order to meet Grey’s demands, which he called “blackmail” in the lawsuit.

Wow seems like you have a dilemma then. Either ignore my riddles, or play along in the spirit that it was offered and just have fun (I realize that is difficult to do since everything is so serious and stuff) or write your own.
Next time I will charge you for it and then you can really gripe about not getting your moneys worth. 😉

Donkeys, specifically the females (jennies), are the single most effective deterrent for coyote and wolf attacks on livestock on the open range.
The only drawback is they will react to working herd dogs the same way they do to a coyote.

We used to gently slide the bottle rocket into a long 1/2″ pipe nipple before lighting and aiming it. We also rigged up pipe cannons and mortars with multiple rockets taped together.
And one time, when we were about 10 or 11, my next door neighbor and I nearly blew ourselves up when we spent all afternoon dumping the powder out of thousands of firecrackers to make a small pipe bomb.

The President has greenlit the Keystone pipe project from Oklahoma to Texas. This runs roughshod over those whose lands will be seized by eminent domain, but there’s profit on the line. As soon as TransCanada and Nebraska get their part of the route worked out, TransCanada will reapply for a permit to export across the border.
The Oklahoma-to-Texas project “will help address the bottleneck of oil in Cushing that has resulted in large part from increased domestic oil production, currently at an eight year high,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement, echoing Obama’s previous endorsement of the pipeline segment.
Shame that Congress made the President choose between Nebraska and Canada, but they have their priorities, I guess.

Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune blasted the TransCanada plan to build the pipeline segment.
“TransCanada is hell bent on bringing tar sands, the world’s dirtiest oil, through America to reach foreign markets,” Brune said in a statement. “They can’t wait for a fair, scientific environmental review they know their pipeline would fail. So we see dirty political tricks, dirty PR tricks, and, now, this dirty trick to build the pipeline piecemeal.”
I am ROFLMAO.
Literally.
I wonder if little Mikey Brune would be so conspicuously indignant if it was a gas pipeline after the natural gas industry dumped 26 million bucks in the Sierra Club’s bank accounts to fight coal industry permitting.

Scott Walker’s thrown in the towel on his recall election. Apparently trying to show 456,000 signatures as bogus was to daunting a task. Walker’s attempting to outsource the validation procedure, but I’m guessing it ain’t gonna fly. Next it will be dragging his feet as long as possible to reschedule.
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker will not challenge any of the more than one million signatures gathered by opponents to force a vote to recall the Republican, saying that his campaign did not have enough time to review them.

This runs roughshod over those whose lands will be seized by eminent domain…
This is a silly notion. Rural Texas and Oklahoma, not to mention the Midwest, are interlaced with dozens of major and countless small pipelines. “lands seized by eminent domain” is inflammatory and over the top.
Have you ever been on a ranch or farm with a pipeline easement ? You wouldn’t know they were there if not for the occasional small sign.

Got one right across the street. Goes right under 700 acres of cotton.

It looks like it’s going to be close, MoveOn, The Obama campaign and the Michigan Democratic Party have all thrown their weight behind getting Rick Santorum to be the Republican nominee. A loss in his home state would be a significant blow to Romney.

Obama began his Presidency with a plan to make soldiers pay for thier service related injuries. He backed off of that for a while.
The Obama administration’s proposed defense budget calls for military families and retirees to pay sharply more for their healthcare, while leaving unionized civilian defense workers’ benefits untouched. The proposal is causing a major rift within the Pentagon, according to U.S. officials. Several congressional aides suggested the move is designed to increase the enrollment in Obamacare’s state-run insurance exchanges.
The disparity in treatment between civilian and uniformed personnel is causing a backlash within the military that could undermine recruitment and retention.

Actually Gypsy and I walk the pipeline every week. We avoid the sections where the grass doesn’t grow and cross over to where the toxic waste pit was filled in.
But people are funny about liberty and don’t see the government seizing their land for other’s economic gain as appropriate. So far 89 in Texas have filed suit. With trial coming up soon over Julia Trigg Crawford’s property rights, folks will have plenty of opportunity to demonize the individual.“They were pushy and would intimidate you and said you had to sign this thing,” said Eleanor Fairchild, who lives near Winnsboro in Wood County. Like others, she said, she “got into the fight” out of concern over possible water contamination.
“We can live without oil,” she said, “but we cannot live without water.”
Michael Bishop, a retired Marine who owns 20 acres in Nacogdoches County, hired an attorney to fight the project after learning that the route would cut through his orchard and garden.
“It’s going to totally disrupt my life as I know it,” he said. “Is it fair for a foreign-owned company to come over here and take land for their private use and their personal gain?” -

Well, one must take into account this is all taking place in East Texas…ahem.
Anyway, it would be interesting and informative to know whether the Piney Woods over there are not now full of rent-seeking plaintiffs’ attorneys and Sierra Club thugs scaring the underwear off these people. I’m sure they have already hired their own landmen to research the titles, laid some street money on the local preachers, flattered the local Democratic officials, loaded up the old pickup with iced beer, barbeque, homemade pies and bouquets of flowers and started driving from homeplace to homeplace knockin’ on doors. Not everyone is ignorant in how these things work.

Have you ever been on a ranch or farm with a pipeline easement ? You wouldn’t know they were there if not for the occasional small sign.
I was reading over at Huffinstuff about one of the indignant landowners:
After all, the Whites weren’t strangers to pipelines. Four oil or natural gas lines — artifacts of deals made by their now-deceased parents — already slip underfoot at the property.
Can’t even use the NIMBY argument when you’ve already got four of ’em.

You never see this kind of behavior over at the Knights of Columbus
A homeowner from Storebro in northern Kalmar County arrived home on Wednesday night to find his garden littered with bits of apple and other signs that an elk had been partying in his back yard, the local Östran and Barometern newspapers reported.
The concerned homeowner also discovered that the children’s swing set which normally sat in the yard was missing. -

I don’t know about you but when the troops are sent out I want them to a) kick major a$$ and b) fight for the liberty and freedom according to our rules and standards. If after the people we fight through their own sovereignty choose to violate freedoms of speech and religion tha that’s teir choice, I’ll just be far less inclined to fght for them again unless of course people among them attack us first.

#113 Texpat: A 2′ natural gas pipeline goes under part of our subdivision. Fortunately it’s far enough from our house that should it rupture at the closest point, the engineer who came out here at my request shortly after we moved in said the worst we could expect would be shattered windows on that side of the house. However the corner of one home on the other street sits almost on top of it, at least according to the markers. Pipeline’s been here decades before houses, and it runs under numerous subdivisions now that this area is growing fast. Bet many homeowners aren’t aware it’s there, though that is supposed to be disclosed before closing a property sale.
