Talk of Defunding NPR Begins

Eric Cantor (R-VA), who if there’s any justice in this world will be the next Speaker of the House, has started a YouCut website to allow citizens to have a direct say in spending cuts. If you’re unfamiliar with this site here’s a description:

YouCut – a first-of-its-kind project – is designed to defeat the permissive culture of runaway spending in Congress. It allows you to vote, both online and on your cell phone, on spending cuts that you want to see the House enact. Each week, we will take the winning item and offer it to the full House for an up-or-down vote, so that you can see where your representative stands on your priorities.

While Senator Cornyn may not want to commit to defunding NPR, Mr. Cantor has added the topic to You Cut:

Terminate Taxpayer Funding of National Public Radio
Savings of Tens of Millions of Dollars (potentially in excess of a hundred million dollars)
National Public Radio’s (NPR) recent decision to terminate commentator Juan Williams contract because of comments he expressed on another station have brought new found attention to NPR’s receipt of taxpayer funds.

NPR receives taxpayer funding in two different ways. First, they receive direct government grants from various federal agencies, including the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Education, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Over the past two years this direct funding has totaled approximately $9 million. But NPR also receives taxpayer funds indirectly. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting makes grants to public radio stations. While some of these grants can be used for any purpose, some can only be used to acquire and produce programming. Often this programming is purchased from NPR. Indeed programming fees and dues paid by local public radio stations to NPR accounts for approximately 40% of NPR’s budget or about $65 million last year. A portion of these funds were originally federal tax dollars provided to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to the local public radio stations.

If you’re so inclined, drop by the site and cast your vote for the defunding of NPR.

Please Please do not defund NPR. Their newscasts are the only non-narcotic sleep aid that works.

Actually, I question the logic of having the government fund any broadcast system. I don’t care what their philosophical bent is.

EG

After the election the focus will remain on the left as they implement their dirty lame duck srategies, come January though, the gun turret motors will whir until the target is square on the GOP leadership in Washington. And I don’t think they see it coming.

When has government ever defunded anything except the military. When cuts are discussed at the local level, fire, police, and garbage collection take the heat – while welfare cheats and artsy-fartsy project roll right on along. Boehner is already talking about finding a way to meet the Dems halfway and blaming that on the wishes of us, the American people.… Read more »

Great link, Hamous. Here is my 2 cents, thrown in for consideration: While defunding NPR is a political hot potato right now, I think that ANYTHING and EVERYTHING should be fair game for consideration of spending cuts. That includes “entitlement” programs such as Social Security, Medicaid, etc. NOTHING should be off the table, no matter how politically popular or unpopular… Read more »

Thanks, Adee, I was not clear on that. But I guess each vote was overriding the previous one, so went back and re-voted for Defund NPR which is the cause du jour.

I’m on the YouCut email list and this morning happily voted to defund NPR. # 1 mharper42, I believe YouCut is set up to choose from several items put forth by the electorate to get the axe. I think you’re supposed to pick the one that ticks you off the most from each set of offerings. Agree with Hamous about… Read more »
