From the Ludwig von Mises Institute: The Obsession with Equality
I’ve never understood the academic obsession with achieving social and economic equality.
Yeah, me neither. Our forefathers wanted equality of opportunity, not equality of outcomes.
Isn’t society better off when half the population is well off and half is less poor than if absolutely everyone is poor? Isn’t all the talk about inequality really just an urge to see the poor increase their living standards? And if that is true, shouldn’t the whole idea of equality be thrown out in favor of a hope for everyone in society to benefit on the margin from economic growth?
Normally, I like TED talks, but this guy I’m not buying.
As the blog says:
There are probably a hundred other problems in this perspective that I hadn’t thought of. You might enjoy watching and poking holes in the analysis.
OK, gooooooood night.
Hi again, let’s see how accurate this turns out to be: There is one person — one American among the 300 million of us — who is not to blame for the state of the union. Everyone else, each of you, in some small or large way, bears some share of the blame, but not this guy. Not one little… Read more »

Sarge; Nowhere in any of that, especially that last part, do I enumerate my priority. If “is what we need” not placing Newt’s debating skills at number one riority to vote for Newt, then is it ,second, third, fourth? You like gingrich primarily on the issues? There are food issues reasons to like Gingrich, so, wha are they numerically? What… Read more »

He’s responded to Newt’s charges indirectly referenciong him and somethig youve only apologized on behalf of Newt as well as to the charges in general. Let me make it short here, Darren:
I’m not the issue here. Newt Gringrich, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and Ron Paul are.
Darren; Some folks just don’t understand that having someone like that fight as hard as he has is what most of us think we need, and we have needed for a long, long, time. You’re right. It does sound remarkably like the defence made for Bill Clinton. We managed to survive as a country back then, there’s no reason to think we won’t if Newt gets elected.
Maybe that marraige thing isn’t as big a negative as some people would want us to beleive.
I’m telling ya, with the new moral compass guiding the Republican Party, things are looking good for a Supreme Court nomination for Bill Clinton. I want to be coldly analytical, not moralize, here. I want to tell you what Mr. Gingrich’s behavior could mean for the country, not for the future of his current marriage. So, here’s what one interested… Read more »

Something of the sacred is lost for me. But then, so much of the sacred has been lost in the ELCA Lutheran church. We usually attend Saturday evening (somewhat more traditional) service but had to opt for the dreary Sunday 10:30 contemporary service today. I mean seriously, Darren;

Of course, we shouldn’t discount the ability of our candidate to clearly express and expound upon Conservative values and make comparison and contrast with those of our opponent. Obama is a man of great rhetorical skill, he is not unintelligent, and he has a very competent political staff. The indispensable Mark Steyn makes a bit of a comparison of abilities… Read more »
We ended up getting rooms at the La Quinta. It’s not too far from the Hilton. Ask them for the IBM or Halliburton rate. They won’t check to see if you actually work there.

Interesting article. I remember attending the Kerrville Catholic Church, and receiving a very small square of dark brown bread that was the Eucharist. I looked in the bulletin, and they have a”bread baking ministry”. I think it’s cool that the parishioners make their own communion bread.
