Cameras in cell phones are getting more and more sophisticated. iPhone cameras are capable of taking pictures that professionals would have been proud of several years ago.
For example:
Apps are also available that help with composition and effects. I took this picture in Scotland last month:

Well, are we going to participate in the 8AM to 8PM shutdown of the internet to try to induce our benevolent dictator politicians to keep their grubby paws off our internet? I’ll say this about Lamar Smith (R) – he’s loyal. Once he’s been bought off, he stays bought off regardless of public outcry or outrage. These people need to be primary-ed out of existence.
Simple message to our legislators – Leave the internet alone.

Only two people I know of outside an Olympia Snowe constituency who continually deny there is a go along to get along, don’t make the other side dislike us group thing out there that everyone else refers to as the Establishment and y’all don’t even agree on it.
One says there never was one, the other says it died years ago.

I’ve never denied that. It’s clear that, once in office, many if not most politicians defer to their leadership on important matters that may even be antithetical to their own beliefs. Lord knows Cornyn is a textbook example of such weaseliness. But that is a completely different matter than a lone group choosing who our next president will be.
All I know is primary elections are held and candidates are chosen by voters. I almost always disagree with their choice. I just choose not to blame it on some mysterious coterie. McCain didn’t become the nominee because the Establishment wanted him to be. He was chosen by a majority of Republican primary voters.

Help me understand where you are coming from. Are these primary elections just a sham to hide the selection a pre-ordained chosen one? Are the voters all just a bunch of mind-controlled Pubbiebots? I don’t get it.

Oh, and there is an Establishment batting down conservative policies everday. But that’s different than election stuff. Same thinking, but different thing.

Pyro, how did your $2.99 app remove the tree from the darker photo? The clumps of grass in the field are still there, but what appears to be an evergreen tree growing along the fenceline, center of the shot, is simply missing.

Good morning Hamsters. What a slide down the thermometer from yesterday’s 6 am 70 to this morning’s 37 just before the Sun peeked above the horizon. Mugly air gone and dry replaces it. Change you can appreciate.
Tedtam, hope your kitty is better this morning so you and LD can get some rest. Sending a request to St. Francis to look into the situation. 🙂

Good morning and good new! Barf Kitty has left her sick bed and has found her warm spot on the floor (we turned on the floor last night, and she’s loving it). She is meowing for attention and has eaten some real kitty food, which I haven’t seen rebounded yet. I fixed her baby food and antibiotic mix this morning, and she licked the plate clean. Her jaundice is receding, and she let me hold and pet her for a while before she left for her warm spot again.
I think we dodged a bullet this time.
We are all very relieved. And stocking up on paper towels, gratefully.

You can find no place where I ever said there is no “go along to get along” faction in the Republican Party. There was once a formidable GOP machine that vetted and promoted candidates, vetoed others, controlled policy with an iron hand, dictated primary rules and schedules and generally operated with a pyramidal top-down authority. In the Republican Party, that structure was first challenged by Goldwater and suffered a large defeat by Reagan. The remaining strains were buffeted by Gingrich and friends in the 90s, but attempted to coalesce again under Bush 43.
The Party ( and the Democratic Party also) no longer has the power it once had and is fractured into numerous power centers. These factions form and reform into coalitions depending upon many factors. The wild card has been the birth of a truly grass-roots movement, the Tea Party, to challenge the old, accepted way of doing things, but even they don’t agree on many things. They do, however, unify under a few very powerful principles and recognize the need to take immediate and decisive action.
Many conservatives have been frustrated by what they perceive as a lack of accomplishment in DC toward the goals of the Tea Party movement. It’s understandable squishy language and soundbytes they hear from some Republican officials do not give them hope. It’s logical a successful grass-roots populist movement would first gain control of the “People’s House”, the House of Representatives designed by the Founders’ to be the voice of the citizenry. But it takes more than that and blaming obstacles on some amorphous, sinister power behind the throne manipulating all events to stymie success only serve to divert attention from what really needs to be done. Even the best politicians will dissappoint and often not meet their supporters’ expectations. It is both human nature and the nature of a democratic republic.
Michael Barone, indispensable wit that he is, hits the nail on the head right here:
They have this in common with those commentators and members of the public bemoaning political gridlock: they ignore the fact that conservative policy shortfalls and political gridlock are a result of the Constitution. The Constitution does not allow you to control government by winning just one election. In other nations you can do so: the British Labour party won the 1945 election and promptly nationalized industries and installed a welfare state. The United States Constitution, in contrast, has staggered elections. We have a House of Representatives 100% of whose members were elected in a heavily Republican year, 2010. We have a president elected in a heavily Democratic year, 2008. We have a Senate two-thirds of whose members were elected in heavily Democratic years, 2006 and 2008, and one-third of whose members were elected in a heavily Republican year, 2010.
Under our Constitution, you usually have to win more than one election to make enduring changes in public policy. Democrats were able to make some major changes in policy after winning historic majorities in 2006 and 2008 (Democrats won their highest percentages of the vote for House of Representatives in the 36 non-Southern states in history in those elections). Even so, they were unable to pass some major bills, including the unions’ card check bill and a cap and trade bill. Republicans now want to make major changes in policy, including repeal of Obamacare, sharp cutbacks in federal spending and long-term fixes for entitlements programs. They have made some headway in Congress, but not as much as they would like.

These were the other choices in 2008:
Rudy Giuliani
Mike Huckabee
Duncan Hunter
Ron Paul
Mitt Romney
Tom Tancredo
Fred Thompson
Tommy ThompsonThese were the other choices in 1996:
Lamar Alexander
Pat Buchanan
Bob Dornan
Steve Forbes
Alan Keyes
Dick Lugar
Arlen Specter
Morry Taylor
Pete WilsonSomehow, I think rank and file Republicans whittled down these lists to the person they thought might be able to win and do the job. There’s certainly many things to be said for and against collective wisdom, but the Founders’ had enough faith in it to risk the future of their dream.
I also find it hard to believe the Establishment brainwashed millions of engaged, active Republican Primary voters into voting for their choice.
The real problem might be getting really top-shelf people to become candidates in the first place.

It’s called “Pro HDR”. It does best outside where there are widely differing light levels in the picture. In the case above, the sunlight coming through the clouds vs the overall dimness of Scotland at 3:30pm in December. It works by taking a couple of pictures with different exposure settings, then combining them. The iPhone native camera app does that, but not nearly as well. In fact, the first picture may have been taken with the native camera in HDR mode. Since it has to take a couple of pictures, you have to keep pretty still (though not completely), which is why it doesn’t work too well for pictures with much movement in them.

I finally got around to listening to this clip on BigJournalism.com. It was difficult to listen to it. Matthews is hard for me to hear, much less understand. He says that Newt said “Juan” in a racist way.
Does anybody catch on to his vocal inflection when he says “Myrtle Beach”? It’s about 6:35 into the clip.
What a wissin’ idjit. He makes me /spit.

All I know is primary elections are held and candidates are chosen by voters. I almost always disagree with their choice. I just choose not to blame it on some mysterious coterie. McCain didn’t become the nominee because the Establishment wanted him to be. He was chosen by a majority of Republican primary voters
At some point, you’re going to have to admit that there are people with lots of money, power, and influence who support these candidates. You’re going to have to admit that these people talk to each other. You’re going to have to admit that some of them are in the media, and most of them are involved professionally in politics either elected, in government, polticial and media consultants, or the lobby industry. You’re going that have to admit that many of them occupy Leadership positions in either party. You’re going to have to admit that they are in media.
You’re going to have to admit that they don’t necessarily have to hold meetings in smoke filled rooms. They can read each others work, they can exchange emails, they can exchange pleasantries at dinner and cocktail parties.
And you’re going to have to admit that they use their power, money, and influence to protect their power, money, and influence—-and that one iof the ways they do that is to use the media and the mailing lists of professional political consultants and their pundit platforms to convince people that they are not doing that.
After you’ve admitted all that, you can add your voice and efforts to those of us who want to change it.

Michael Barone, indispensable wit that he is, hits the nail on the head right here:
And the response to Micheal Barone’s is this:
Many conservative commentators and political observers, however, staunchly disagree.
“Some people claim the Republican Establishment does not exist,” Washington Times columnist Milton Wolf told TheDC. “We have a name for those people: Establishment Republicans.”
“The Establishment is a real thing with amorphous and mutable borders,” political strategist Mary Matalin said. “Ostensibly, it is the members of formal structures (party leaders, Congressional leadership, funders, top line strategists, ideological big thinkers and opiners, etc.).”
Conservative talk radio host Mark Levin scoffs at the notion that there is no such thing as the Republican establishment.
“It is interesting that no one wants to be characterized as part of the establishment, even when they run the instrumentalities of the GOP and have never endorsed a single tea party candidate out of the gate,” he said.
“Besides, if there was not an establishment, there would be no need for the tea party.”

Things are getting a little bit more interesting in the Republican primary for Senate. David Dewhurst still holds a large lead over Ted Cruz, but it’s down from 29 points in September to now just 18. Dewhurst is at 36% to 18% for Cruz, 7% for Tom Leppert, 4% for Craig James, 2% for Joe Agris, 1% each for Glenn Addison and Lela Pittenger, and 0% for Charles Holcomb.
Since our previous poll Dewhurst’s support has declined from 41% to 36%, while Cruz’s has increased from 12% to 18%. Dewhurst continues to have far superior name recognition, with 60% of voters familiar with him to only 29% who have an opinion about Cruz. Here’s a finding that signals the potential of this race to get very interesting though: among those 29% familiar with Cruz, whether they like him or not, he leads Dewhurst 34-31. That speaks well to his ability to make things competitive once he becomes better known and really starts spending money. -

A Texas medical student well-known in her community as an Iranian activist was mysteriously shot and killed in her car, just yards from her home.
Gelareh Bagherzadeh, 30, was driving through her Houston townhouse complex around midnight on Monday when she was shot dead through her car window.
“When officers arrived, they found a vehicle had run into a garage door at that location with the engine running and tires spinning on the pavement. Ms. Bagherzadeh was found slumped over in the driver’s seat,” the Houston Police Department said in a statement.
If you don’t think there are agents and sympathizers of Hezbollah, Syria and Iran living in Houston, ask the Jamail family or the Lebanese Christian Droubi Bakery folks whose windows were shot out and stores vandalized back in the 1980s. If HPD is so naive as to believe otherwise, it’s not a good thing at all.

Let’s try it this way:
How did Mitt Romney get to where he was almost immeidately proclaimed the nominee, and that his qualification for the position was that he was the most electable, months before any vote had been cast?
The man ran in three elections, and lost two of them—-badly. His disapproval rating when he left the only office he was ever elected to as 66%. He signed a ban on semi-automatic weapons and the Socialized Medicine plan that Obama used to design Obamacare——-but supposedly conservative pundits, party leaders, and money men decidee he was going to be the best choice tlo represent Conservatives in this country.
THAT did not happen spontaneously.

Don’t Expect ‘Populist Backlash’ in Palmetto State
“One would think that [in] a state with a relatively depressed economy, you might think Mitt Romney might not do as well as some other candidates,” Hauk said.
But although South Carolina may seem ripe for a “populist backlash,” there is also a longtime tendency to go for the perceived winner of the GOP nomination, Hauk added.Perhaps. But it will be interesting to see how
Palin’s left-handed endorsement of Newt plays out. -

#18 Texpat, Michael Barone is so right. The Constitution stands sentinel and keeps this Republic from despotism because too many Americans honor and revere it, despite the current regime gleefully (and treasonously?) trampling on it at every selfish opportunity. The oath of office means something. At all levels. No one person can wave a wand and instantaneously reverse the evil the Obama regime has wrought, for there is no king nor emperor no dictator for life here. It will take a stronger Congress and new President to do that. Several elections could be required to right the course and more to keep it. The price of liberty is eternal vigilance, and we have at last recognized that.
We have We The People, free women and men awake and working from the grassroots on up to educate fellow citizens in what used to be taught in school of the meaning and workings of the Republic’s framework. The 2010 election was merely the opening salvo, the work has just begun, and increasing conservative membership in the House and taking a majority in the Senate is mandatory if the leftwing juggernaut is to be deposed rather than merely stalemated. Government must be returned to the balance the Constitution provides, and that requires a vigorous Congress that will not be a doormat to the whims of the Executive. A veto-proof majority in each house could be a useful block to a milquetoast Republican as well as a tyrannical Democrat. Our vigilance starts at home, down to the dog catcher job (or hide inspector) level. 🙂 and goes to the top.
The Tea Party Movement is stronger than ever, less in the news, past the rally stage and well advanced into the organizing and grassroots work that produced the 2010 landslide. The liberals’ playbook has been read and tactics adopted to use against them. They work well for us, so the liberals howl when that happens. Poor babies.

Palin’s left-handed endorsement of Newt plays out. This commercial might have an effect, too.
Newt also put in a performance at the debates night before last that was a barn burner. Rush, Hannity, and to a smaller extent, Levin gave it rave reviews. There’s a debate tonite that Mittens has decline to attend.
And now, all of a sudden, Mittens may have decided not to debate in Florida.

More generally, Stevens suggested that in the long course of the campaign, this year’s key issues have been exhausted. “We’re down to the most obscure questions,” he said. “When more than ten debates mention Chilean models, and it’s not a fashion show, then something’s wrong”.
That’s funny.

I’d add, however, that some are being ignored.
It is interesting how candidates who don’t do well in debates all of a sudden think we’re having too many debates. Perry thought so a few weeks ago, now Mittens finds that he’s having to actually defend himself, and decides the same thing.

Well the idiots at the state department are going to make a decision. We lose the jobs, the oil and a reliable training partner. Guess who wins?
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/01/18/industry-source-state-department-will-reject-keystone-pipeline-reroute/The State Department will announce the decision on Keystone XL pipeline is “no,” as early as Wednesday, an industry source told Fox News, suggesting that the department will say 60 days is inadequate time to do the required environmental impact assessment on the path of the coveted pipeline.
For three years, the State Department has been reviewing the initial proposal to run a pipeline from Canada down to Texas through a sensitive Nebraska aquifer — authority it has because of the transnational path the route takes. The pipeline had been through several other federal, state and local approvals, but the department backed away from signing off on the plan last year after environmentalists complained.
Industry workers and Republicans contend the project would create thousands of jobs, and Canada’s prime minister has warned if the U.S. can’t get on board, the North American nation will look to team with China.

No. I don’t think so. But they may want to look at the people who send them emails, or who belong to any small discussion groups they belong to. The question to ask when they do is if any of them are so active in Party Politics that they would get thier information and lines of logic from media consultants with mailing lists that they sell to political activists or party stalwarts.
Another thing they might look at is if any of them has ever asked or encouraged them to ridicule and marginalize people with ideas and opinions that threaten powerful people in the Party or the “established” Leadership of the Party local, state, or national.

JugEars says NO to the Keystone XL pipeline.
In a decision sure to re-ignite a fierce energy debate, the Obama administration was announcing on Wednesday its rejection of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline because the 60-day deadline imposed by Republicans did not allow adequate time to review an alternate route through critical wetlands in the Midwest.
Hasn’t he had almost 3 years to “study” this pipeline already? He tried to stall until after the election and got busted for its obvious political motivation. Now he says that he simply has not had the time to have an appropriate study on the issue –BS!
If the Rs have any brains what-so-ever they will hang this around his neck like a lead life preserver. -

3 hours from arrival at the DMV front door to reaching the station for eye exam, thumbprints, and new photo. Good for 6 yrs. Surprising new rule: no photos taken with glasses.
There were not enough chairs to accommodate the crowd — I’d say largely because of people who brought others along for company or maybe transportation. The chairs are not comfortable but alternative is to stand and lean against the wall. Surprised by how many elderly women on walkers arrived to do some sort of business with the DPS. Most but not all had younger folks along to shepherd them through the crowd. Thrilled to see young men arise from their seats and escort the disabled over to take their spot, then join the wall leaners.
I’ve spent worse 3-hour stints, but not recently. I was remembering how aeons ago, everybody in Texas had to pay the state vehicle tax on the same deadline and in person at the courthouse. It could take all day, and the line around the block was a target for local political candidates who wanted to pass out literature and shake hands. Stuck in that line, we were like fish in a barrel.

Instead of saving the passengers and impeaching Hugo Obumma Chavez Jr. they let him continue to sail the ship into the berg because they are deathly afraid of the PrOpObummagandist media and being called the ‘R’ word. -

Hugh Hewitt thinks Stephanopolous is so pissed at Mitt for making him look like a fool he is leading the fight inside ABC to spike the Newt ex-wife tapes. Bryan Ross did the interviews and supposedly civil war has broken out in ABC over this.

Berry thinks the whole ABC infighting story is BS.
Part of the set up, so they can say they had a war over “ethics” while they leak enough of the story to make it a fait accompli and build anticipation/audience. -

He may be right or it could be they really are fighting as Hewitt said and using the “ethics excuse” as cover. Either way, they’re going to have release it soon since everybody in the world knows about it.

More background there than I knew before. You have to admit the captain of the Andrea Doria was a far different kind of man though.
After satisfying himself that all passengers and crew had been properly evacuated, Calamai had determined to go down with his ship and atone for his mistakes, but his officers talked him out of following the Andrea Doria to her grave. Nevertheless, he made certain he was the last person off the ship.
Calamai was destined never to command another vessel and died a broken man in 1972. While his navigation of the Andrea Doria before the collision was judged after the fact to be woefully deficient and unseamanlike in many respects, his handling of the abandon-ship operations was nothing short of exemplary.

The following revelation will likely cause an uproar among Mitt Romney supporters and bring significant heat on his detractors. The integrity of the “King of Bain” — a political movie which claims to tell the story of the former Massachusetts Governor’s time at Bain Capital – is being called into question after two men interviewed for the film claim that, not only were they unaware the film was about Romney or Bain Capital, their interview clips were taken grossly out of content.
So egregious was the alleged spin, according to UniMac workers Tommy Jones and Mike Baxley, that both men claim the clips in which they are seen talking about personal hardships were in fact references to incidents that came long after their time at Bain Capital. According to the interview subjects, the hardships they speak of in the film refer to a time when they decided to strike it out on their own by starting an independent business.
Hope Gingrich’s SuperPAC enjoys that $5,000,000 spent to get “King of Bain”.
Men Interviewed for Anti-Romney Bain Movie Tell Megyn Kelly They Were Taken Grossly Out of Context
I missed Shannon’s previous link about the lies over Romney’s time at Bain. I hope I’m not repeating any information from that link without crediting Shannon with that link.

Looks like somebody forgot to Google.
The Monday Boston Globe featured a photo on the front page of its Metro section of a lip-locked couple who “found romance” at Occupy Boston.
“Holding hands outside the food tent before the encampment disbanded,” read the accompanying story, “they were the archetype of an Occupy couple: he, a red-headed Mainer with tattoos on his arms; she, a petite upstate New York girl with a heart-shaped face and a boyish haircut, wearing a knit grandmother sweater three sizes too big.”
Good details — but the story failed to mention one big one: Robert “Red” Stitham, the 25 year-old beau whose relationship with Anya Karasik, 18, is the focus of the piece, is a Level 3 sex offender.
A quick Google search of his name turns up his sex offender notification — complete with his photo — on the website of the police department in Plymouth, where Stitham grew up. A search on the state Sex Offender Registry Board website shows Stitham now lives in a homeless shelter in Boston.
“The Board has determined that these individuals have a high risk to re-offend and that the degree of dangerousness posed to the public is such that a substantial public safety interest is served by active community notification,” the registry site reads.
In 2007, a Barnstable County jury convicted Stitham of two counts of indecent assault and battery on a person over 14, and he was sentenced to 18 months with time served, court records state.

#92 Texpat,
Sort of like Douglas MacArthur and Captain Kirk. He salvaged the operation after skipping an ounce of prevention.
Not to be bash the Regia Marina, they had their moments. Wkikipedia is offline and I do not subscribe to Jane’s Fighting Ships. Here is a picture of the RM Zara whitch went down fighting an uneven battle. They were far better sailors than history generally gives them credit.

ABC having an “ethics” debate? They are just arguing over which approach will do the most damage. Who cares if Newt was getting a little on the side 20 years ago. That should be a plus that will attract Democrat voters, making him a bipartisan candidate.

Tonight’s class topic was “The Importance of Church – The Importance of Teens in Church”. As part of the class, they have to write a letter to me, which may be shared with the pastor, about their feelings about the Church, this church, their relationship with Jesus, what they’d like to see changed – anything related to their spiritual/Church life that they wanted to talk about. Everything was legal, I wanted to know where they were spiritually.
It’s a little scary that they are so open with me. I have a larger load than usual of major emotional issues, lost faith, seeking faith – a lot of sadness and confusion this year. I just want to hug some of them and never let them go, now that they’ve told me where they are.
Pray for me – and them – that I may help these students find their way through the darkness.

Regarding the Andrea Doria, I recall the crew of the Stockholm was so disgusted that the first 3 lifeboats they picked up had more Andrea Doria crew than passengers, that they beat the snot out of the crewmembers.

I thought the same thing when I read it on the front page of the Chronicle the other day. i’d like to see the FBI on the case.

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – On the same day that thousands of websites including Wikipedia and WordPress have gone dark to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act; Florida Senator Marco Rubio announced he was withdrawing his name and support for the bill.
“Congress should listen and avoid rushing through a bill that could have many unintended consequences,” Senator Rubio wrote on his Facebook page. “Therefore, I have decided to withdraw my support for the Protect IP Act.”
Why did he support it in the first place? 😕

Doesn’t lok like anything Newt needs to fret about:
Update: Good lord. After all the hype tonight, is this thing actually going to be a giant nothingburger? Howard Kurtz:
A knowledgeable insider says that Newt Gingrich’s second wife does not say anything in the taped interview with ABC News that she hasn’t said in previous print interviews. But to repeat her account of how their marriage failed—because the then-House speaker was having an affair—in a form that can be endlessly replayed on television could prove a serious distraction for the presidential candidate two days before the South Carolina primary.
