I e-mailed this to my friends on a back channel a couple of weeks ago. It is a devastating critique of the New York Times by journalism professor and film critic David Ross.

Now, on to the New York Times vivisection with a quote from Ross, as he reviews the recent documentary, Page One, characterized by Ross thus a sleek, self-important infomercial for The New York Times, largely involves Times partisans whining that the dinosaur carcass of the Gray Lady is being picked clean by the mammalian swarms of the new media.
Those who bay for the demise of the mainstream media have to take seriously that news does not coalesce out of the internet ether, as it seems to. It must be dug up, run down, and eye-witnessed as mortar rounds collapse the available ground cover. This ferreting process is crucially enabled by the kind institutional pressure that only billion-dollar media entities can exert. Foreign potentates and corporate barons do not return phone calls placed by self-proclaimed smart guys in their pajamas (e.g., us). Eliciting a response requires the veiled threat intrinsic to newspapers that are in their own way players on the world stage. News depends on credentialed news people in the traditional sense: this is reality, like it or not.
On the other hand, the mainstream media, and the Times in particular, has done everything conceivable to hasten its own demise. The postmodern Times is a cavalcade of inaccuracy, omission, myopia, flagrant political bias, outrageously lousy writing, latent snobbery, and superficial urban sophistication. All the shallowness of the modern elite university has come home to roost at the Times. The worst offenders are surely the editorial sections (prose sinkhole) and the culture sections (lapdog of everything transgressive), but I reserve special ire for fellow Yalie Michiko Kakutani, the Pulitzer-winning book reviewer who’s done much to instantiate a self-important middle-browism as the default mode of the literary culture. The novelist Jonathan Franzen, for one, calls her “the “stupidest person in New York” and an “international embarrassment.”
And here on columnist, Tom Friedman:
After a while one begins to feel a certain insult in the assumption that one won’t notice little things like his complete mental disarray. In my writing classes, I sometimes use Friedman’s infamous Valentine to China’s authoritarian ruling class (here) as an example of logical incoherence and confused language. It takes the students about ten seconds to recognize that Friedman makes no sense. It’s a kind of confidence booster.

Granite countertops and similar features are now present even in apartments marketed to college students. If we dig into the support systems, the differences are even more dramatic. Home Depot sells furnaces more efficient and quieter than what Elvis had in the 1970s; windows today are dramatically superior in their construction and energy efficiency; and appliances such as washing machines and dryers have options unimaginable to even the wealthiest in the 1970s.

Pirates hijacked the Al Molai 40 to 45 days ago, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command said in a statement. The crew was “held hostage, with limited rations and we believe were forced against their will to assist the pirates with other piracy operations,” according to the statement.
Ifn the crew was unwilling to cooperate in the piracy, I think it would have been extremely difficult to make any piracy actually happen.
I happen to agree, however, that the pirates should be turned over to Iran or simply thrown overboard in shark infested waters.

woman manager headed out there, I kept a close watch just because I was
curious what was wrong with the lady and wanted to be sure nothing happened.As the Target lady walked up towards the car and got very close to the old woman
in order to help her, the back door of the car flies open and a large man with a
stocking cap on, jumps out and sticks a gun to the lady’s stomach as he shoves
her into the back of the car.I yelled out “call 911” several times and just as I was saying that, a policeman who
happened to be on the other side of the parking lot and who, luckily had seen the
entire thing happen, raced over to the car.He was able to stop the car and arrest the male as well as the old lady, who was
involved in the scheme. By God’s grace everyone was all right, including myself,

I don’t see abductors working in tandem with anyone else, unless you’re talking Criminal Minds type of serial killer teams.
“Jumped out of the trunk” and still managed to grab the lady? If I’m walking towards a car and I see the trunk lid moving, I’m stopping and then moving away. The only way I can see this working is if a hand appeared with a gun pointing at the abductee, and she’s too afraid of the gun to move. I’ve never seen anyone “leap” out of a trunk. Maybe if you’re a midget, and are crouched ready to jump with one hand on the trunk hood and the other with a gun.
But the midget would still have to have exceptional balance to “leap” and I think a midget with a gun jumping out of a trunk might elicit laughter and a search for the remaining clowns rather than blood-curdling fear.

He said at one point he watched a three and out series (all incomplete passes) where a whooping 11 seconds went off the clock.
He said like the ’72 Dolphins holding their breath the undefeated season will not be matched, those Oilers are always hoping some team will break that comeback record.

I was moving Mirkwood earlier when I felt something pop in my forearm. My wrist has been bothering me, so I’m sure it’s related. I’m sitting on my couch, icing down my arm, and watching the game. I was hoping to work more today. I want to get as much done as I can before the heat and mosquitoes make it impossible.
Typing one- and left-handed sucks when I’m used to toch typing like the wind.

Obamacare will not be an issue, and it should be. If Romney even tries to bring it up, Barry is just going to say “I modeled my plan after yours, what could be wrong with it?”
The People will then have a choice between two politicians without a dimes’s worth of difference between them on perhaps the most key issue of this President’s tenure. The Dems will then be able to say “There’s not too much difference between us, and things are starting to improve in the economy, so why changes horses in mid stream?”

Just returned from Gypsy’s walk on the pipeline, they dumped 3 foot of beach sand on the adjacent waste dump ten years ago and the grass/weeds still aren’t growing. Unfortunately, it will stay on the low end of the tax rolls until it can be developed.
Off to work. With the renaissance of oil and gas exploration and production the last two years we’re working 24/7
raking in moneyproviding products to the industry. I hate to leave money on the table though, if it’s under $20M we don’t even look at it. -

It’s been a good day. Went to church, had breakfast with Hubby and Handsome, then came home. I took off my wrist brace to do some “light yard work” since my wrist was feeling better. Silly me. I had several plants that needed to be put in the dirt, so I trucked off to my veggie beds. I felt it a little bit when I leaned on my hand to reach the weeds, but I compensated the best I could. My old strawberry patch (they didn’t live long, true to form) is now housing 5 asparagus plants, courtesy of my sister at Christmas. Let’s see what they’ve got. I also have 7 chard plants in place, and seeds for stevia (that stuff is a —-ch to grow here, but I keep trying), snow peas, round peas,spinach, mustard greens, leeks, and a couple types of lettuce are in place and watered in.
I had used my shovel and my yard cart to clean up the weeds and plant. My big mistake was taking them by Mt. Mirkwood on the way to the compost pile. “I just want to see if the dirt is loose” changed to “I can just scrape off the backside to fill in the nearby low spot without pushing my arm too much” which then changed to “I’m doing okay I’ll keep going”. I finally got to “I better shut this down NOW”. Back in the wrist brace, but I’m on the back porch, enjoying my yard. Soon I’ll have to go and wash dishes – because my men didn’t think about it. Then to cook dinner while I rotate some clothes through the wash. After dinner is more dishes and then bookkeeping.
But I can look at my ever-shrinking mountain and feel like I’m accomplishing something. But the sqirrels will have to re-bury those five nuts I found today.

Tony Blankley has died. He was one of the few reasons to watch The McLaughlin Group. An educated and erudite man, I always enjoyed his polite take down of Eleanor Clift. She rarely ever realized she’s just been run over by a truck.

If I was running as a Democrat, I’d want to be running against a candidate who is as much like me as I can possibly get. That’s why John McCain lost. People generally stick with the devil they know.

I felt the same way. I only happened on a show with Blankley on it when paging through channels one day. While Clift hadn’t changed at all, Blankley was a refreshing addition. I never liked Buchanan much at all. Ever. I guess you could say I consider him the educated man’s Glenn Beck.

You’re very predictable. Yours is the kind of blind partisanship in favor of a candidate that will eventually break your heart, and smarten you up a bit. I know—I used to be exactly like that. The I realized that all the Really Smart Political Guys I was listening to were either just winging it anyway or covertly shilling for a candidate and I stopped listerning to them.
I was convinced that we should nominate John McCain because I believed all the Really Smart Poltical Guys who told me he was the most “electable.” Scales having fallen from my eyes since then, I see nothing real elecatable about him—-or Mitt Romney. They are cut from the same cloth and the only reason anybody thinks Romney can win is because Obama is sure to lose. That’s pretty much it, and that bothers the Hell out of me, because I’m not sure Obama is sure to lose. It won’t take much of a change in the economic picture in this country to have the media trumpeting it as a gangbusters turnn around engineered by a genius in the face of recalcitrant opposition (remember Recovery Summer?). Already, most of the questions the legacy media crowd are asking in the debates are about social issues and carefully crafted to put the Caricature Conservative they’ve built in the worst light possible. What we need is strak contrast, not a muddled middle.

I want to win the lottery. It doesn’t mean I’ll quit spending money until I win. I’d like to have a better car. I’m going to quit driving until I get the car I want. I wish there were a lot of things in my reality that I could change and get exactly what I want. I won’t get them. It doesn’t mean I have to be stupid about the decisions I make. I’ll keep driving the car I have. I’ll save money until I get where I want. Concessions are part of life. How does not voting help make a point? Who does it help? Hurt?
Be unhappy with the candidate. But don’t help the enemy.
