On Labor Day weekend, it’s fitting to take a look at the state of the laborers.
Those who must work for a living have not been having things so great lately. Rumor has it that the President will be proposing some form of new stimulus program(s) to spur job growth. All but the most strident of Keynesian economics supporters agree that governmental stimulus only works for a very short time after it begins and then rapidly loses any positive effect once the necessary deficits begin to be realized.
This is for a couple of reasons. First, borrowing by the government soaks up available capital that could have been used by business to expand. Furthermore, government action entails lots of internal friction and other waste that causes a dollar spent in a stimulus program to yield much less than a dollar of real economic benefit, while a dollar spent entirely in the private sector yields much more than a dollar in economic benefit.
The single most effective thing the President could announce to encourage job creation would be to call an immediate moratorium on the implementation of new Federal regulations and a repeal of all regulations implemented in the past two years. Repealing Healthulus would be a close second.
We can easily see the effects of the regulations and excessive spending over the past two years in the chart below, which most of you have seen before. I’ve added recent U3 data and U6 data. It’s not pretty.
Note the difference between the U3 & U6 trends. In 2006 the difference was about 3-3.5 percentage points. Now it’s more than double that. That difference represents the jobs that have been lost in the last 5 years.

This warning is so good that I am compelled to repeat it:
If your apartment is hit by a dolphin, DO NOT GO OUT TO SEE IF THE DOLPHIN IS OKAY. That’s how the hurricane tricks you into coming outside.

If you had bought $1000 worth of speculative stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49. If you had bought $1000 worth of Budweiser beer one year ago, drank all the beer, and recycled the cans, you would have $107.
Given the current conditions of the economy, my advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

Didn’t get to post this yesterday, so I’ll do it now.
Today,Yesterday, in 1945, Japan formally surrenders, ending World War II six years and one day after it began. We had a roll of toilet back then that on every square was printed:
Hitler, Mussolini, Hirohito

Good morning Hamsters. Delightful clear blue sky again early, 75 and comfortable at 6, steady NE breeze with occasional gusts makes you almost think this is a hint of Fall. Well, we who are desperate for Fall will use any excuse. I see Beaumont is getting some of Lee’s rain. Now if it will march about 100 miles west we could all share.

Back from a second day of deep adventure in search of the latest product to assume the mantle of gold–hay, specifically good horse hay. Green gold. Thanks to the neverending drought, good horse hay is at a premium as is cattle hay, which is one grade lower. What goats will eat is at the bottom of the edible scale, and if they won’t eat it, it is pure junk. Not to say that goats won’t eat horse hay, of course.
Neighbors who have 5 horses and usually purchase hay from the same feed store we do were in search mode also since our customary source was completely out but tentatively expected a delivery Friday, which didn’t come. Then today was to be the day, limit 10 bales per customer when it did arrive. Another feed store nearby had a 5 bale llimit per customer. Neighbors then visited Craigs List yesterday for leads and found a feed store in Needville (S. of Rosenberg) advertising newly arrived hay. They drove down there and found wonderful fresh, green coastal bermuda hay just driven up from the Valley. Called us with the info. then asked if they could bring some for us, as they had room in their horse trailer. Bless our dear neighbors. They brought 10 for us (at $8.95 each) , for which I wrote the check for a bit more as a thank you and to help pay for gas. We fortunately had about 15 bales left from previous purchases, but you do not pass up a chance these days.
Today we inquired about hay from our usual place, and it had arrived. Called the neighbors with the news, and we went over together. Meantime spouse decided we couldn’t fit any more bales in our hay space, which shares space with the stall bedding bags, spare fence posts, fence rails, and room to walk between them all. Solved the problem by neighbors offering to store 10 bales in their barn since they have a much larger space. Bless them again. So we each bought the 10 bales alotted (at $10.50 each) and found out that today the limit was 5 bales per regular customer, but since we were told 10 yesterday, we got 10.
It is not unusual now for horse owners encountering a truck bearing hay going down the road to turn around and follow it to learn its destination. And regrettably these days stealing hay to sell is a booming illegal business, so one is wise not to have the supply visible from the street or the driveway or the road behind the property. Also advisable is good lighting at night around the barn and house.

Adee, does hay store well for a long time, as long as it’s out of the rain? (No humor intended, just askin’.) With all the stories I’ve heard here this year about stolen horses and having to guard your horse hay, it is sounding like the old West.

What is all this nonsense about Apple iphone prototypes being left at/lost at bars? What kind of moron employee would go to a bar with a proprietary secret device, and then forget about it and somehow leave it there? This careless loss of a trade secret would never happen where I work, and if it did, it would be a firing offense.

#18 M42: I don’t think that leaving that phone was an accident. It was done so that it would get to the tech junkies who would put it through its paces and then blog all about it to spill the beans. Apple gets really great unbiased feedback and lots of free buzz about the new phone coming up. Any flaws in the prototype will be revealed prior to release of the real McCoy and they can be fixed before production ramps up. To make matters even better, all this research and error/flaw revelation is free to Apple; they pulled a “Tom Sawyer whitewashing the fence trick” on whomever was willing.
Losing one phone in a bar is an accident, twice is on purpose. -

The Netherlands, where six per cent of the population is now Muslim, is scrapping multiculturalism:
The Dutch government says it will abandon the long-standing model of multiculturalism that has encouraged Muslim immigrants to create a parallel society within the Netherlands.
A new integration bill, which Dutch Interior Minister Piet Hein Donner presented to parliament on June 16, reads:
“The government shares the social dissatisfaction over the multicultural society model and plans to shift priority to the values of the Dutch people.
In the new integration system, the values of the Dutch society play a central role.
With this change, the government steps away from the model of a multicultural society.”
The letter continues: “A more obligatory integration is justified because
the government also demands that from its own citizens. It is necessary
because otherwise the society gradually grows apart and eventually no one
feels at home anymore in the Netherlands…”
The new integration policy will place more demands on immigrants. For
example, immigrants will be required to learn the Dutch language, and the
government will take a tougher approach to immigrants who ignore Dutch values or disobey Dutch law.
The government will also stop offering special subsidies for Muslim
immigrants because, according to Donner, “it is not the government’s job to integrate immigrants.” (How bloody true )
The government will introduce new legislation that
outlaws forced marriages and will also impose tougher measures against
Muslim immigrants who lower their chances of employment by the way they dress.
More specifically, the government will impose a ban on face-covering
Islamic burqas as of January 1, 2013.
Holland has done that whole liberal thing, and realised – maybe too late –
that creating a nation of tribes will kill the nation itself.
Australia’s future may well be read here.
READERS NOTE: Muslim immigrants leave their countries of birth because of civil and political unrest
CREATED BY THE VERY NATURE OF THEIR CULTURE.
Countries like Holland and Australia have an established way of life that actually works, so why embrace the unworkable?
If Muslims do not wish to accept another culture, the answer is simple STAY WHERE YOU ARE!!
This gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘Dutch Courage’If we could only wake the wiss up and do that here! Don’t just focus on the moooooooooooooooooslims but the invasion from the south needs to be addressed as well.

#22 Bonecrusher that was neat, but how did the little guy wind up under a pile of rocks? His mama looked real concerned abouy the guys that were trying to help. I went over to Fort Gaines Georgia today and saw a spotted fawn run across the road in broad daylight, coming back through Skipperville I saw a “Jake Turkey” walking across a field. It’s odd to have spotted fawns this late in the year but it is because it’s been so dry that the does breed later than normal. The other day, I saw 5 fawns running around the front yard and between the buildings at work, chasing each other.

#17 mharper42, A square bale of coastal bermuda hay can last a year or more if kept dry and under cover so it doesn’t get wet and moldy. Must check the roof over the storage area for leaks and plug them or store the hay elsewhere in the building and keep it away from open barn windows and doors. The exterior of a bale will naturally bleach to sort of a beige when exposed to light after a while but will remain greenish inside unless stored for a really long time.
The best horse hay doesn’t grow this far south but thrives in colder climates farther north in the Midwest and west. It is timothy grass, and many large breeding and training farms bring it down here by the truckload. Several friends in Wisconsin raise hay for their horses and for sale; they plant timothy and alfalfa in the same fields so the hay is a mix of the two. This is munching nirvana. Timothy by itself is expensive enough to import, and the mix is even moreso. We can’t afford it.

I watched the Judge Judy video when someone posted it recently, but I just watched it again in its entirety. Both the plaintiff (30-y/o woman) and the defendant (21-y/o-man) are garbage. The various handouts given to send this turkey to school all appear to be wasted. Assuming we have a conservative victory in 2012, we gotta start shutting down these giveaway programs as fast as humanly possible. The turkey’s handouts mentioned did not all seem to be from the federal gubmint, but as that is the most wasteful level, that is where we need to start.I didn’t hear in the video any respect in which the gal was on welfare, but it would not surprise me to find out that she was.

There is no solution, short of turning off the tap. I don’t think there is the political will to do that.
Our political system breeds laziness and our educational system teaches stupidity. The sad thing is that your video is just one example of a whole generation that has been completely lost. Even more evil is the fact that racist liberals have done the worst damage to young black men.

They male garbage simply would not shut up, I found that to be exceptionally rude and it exposed his profound ignorance. He could not/would not grasp the concept that money for rent is for rent only, kinda like our fed govt who steals the SS money and spends it on other crap and when the SS bill is due there is no money left. I used the word steal on purpose because that is exactly what it is – stealing. I don’t believe that the male garbage ever spoke a correct sentence grammar wise and he is in his 3rd year of college?? What the wiss are they teaching in that “college”?
The female garbage was suing the male garbage because the male garbage would not pay the agreed rent, he thinks he is so great that merely being in his presence is rent enough – kind of like the usurper in chief. The entitlement mentality is stunning in its arrogance. -

At best they are teaching the remedial courses necessary to make up for the lack of education in K-12 schools. I teach in community college. I see kids – high school graduates, mind you – who:
* Do not know who Mark Twain or Charles Dickens are,
* Cannot properly match the tense of a noun and verb – and don’t understand the need,
* Cannot perform a simple algebraic transformation as in C=B*A is the same as B=C/A,
* Cannot explain the difference between the American Revolution and the American Civil
War,
* Cannot locate major countries such as Russia, Israel, or even the USA on a world map.
* Cannot name the current Vice President of the US.They can however accurately name all three of the Kardashian sisters and explain why global warming will soon destroy the world.
Much of the problem evident in the Judge Judy video is due to simple ignorance.
The worst problem is that the public schools spend a lot of time teaching students to feel really good about themselves in spite of their ignorance! That makes it almost impossible to try to remediate their shortcomings when they get to college.

RE #27 garbage video: The whole thing really grieves me that I think about my fellow man as garbage, yet try as I may I can come to no other conclusion. The garbage is not 100% at fault, but at least 90%. They have been taught for a lifetime that govt money comes from the land of RFUs and there is an endless supply of it. That are taught that they are owed the RFU money because there was once slavery and segregation (the fact that slavery was abolished 145 years ago and segregation abolished 45 years ago is irrelevant) what the wiss are they learning in K-12 public school?? Why can they not understand that money from the gov’t is first taken from the citizens??
The welfare brood mares (to quote Chris Baker) have become an incredible burden on our society in a similar fashion as the poor mistreated Gazans have on Israeli society. This is not an accident, it is by design – it creates problems that only the elites can fix and garner more power to themselves; the fact that the elites created the problem in the first place is irrelevant.
Turn off the tap in a steady controlled fashion. Start cutting every federal program, agency bureau, etc that is not specifically constitutionally mandated. Kill the income tax and replace it with a national retail sales tax. Remove from office every judge or legislator that advocates extra-constitutional involvement. -

I’ve been busy for a while, and come back to find no new comments on the thread I set up. When I created my OC thread, there were no drafts. Therefore, I must assume that WB is trying to steal my Labor Day thunder.

I’m no expert, but I’m beginning to think the weather forecasters may have missed the track for tropical storm Shelia Jackson Lee. The radar seems to indicate that it may be a little closer to us than originally anticipated. I’ve got wind and rain in Seabrook (gas too, but that’s not storm related). Maybe something good will come out of this yet.

#38 ‘Bout the storm, it was barely in the Atchafala Bay this morning then drifted south, then west. I’ve been checking the Lat-Lon every 3 hours when the new report comes in. LQQks like I’ll be driving back through the Dayaam Thang no matter what, I was hoping that it would come on in a weaken a little so the drive through Louisana wouldn’t be so brutal. Oh well, it’ll be what it is. I figger that we’ll some pretty good rain here in Alabamy since we’re on the dirty side but it would be great if it slipped a little more to the west.

Light rain in Near NW-Houston. I went out at 9:30 to move my sprinklers and got rained on as I ran around turning off that expensive CoH summer-rates water. I fully expect to faint dead away when I get my next water bill. One of my sprinklers is a new one, capable of shooting water 75 ft in a low trajectory at full volume, so I am now throwing more water on my yard than I ever have during this or any other Houston drought. -

Nah, not really but we’ve been having 3-5 water main breaks in or subdivision every week. Watching 1000’s of gallons of water running into the storm drains drives me crazy, especially with my water bill @ $150! So what we need to do is buy a bilge pump and some 55 gallon plastic drums and just load up all the wasted water, it’s on it’s way to Galveston Bay anyway. 😉

Labor unions adjust to new reality under Obama
By SAM HANANEL
Associated PressWASHINGTON (AP) — In the early days of the Obama administration, organized labor had grand visions of pushing through a sweeping agenda that would help boost sagging membership and help revive union strength.
Now labor faces this reality: Public employee unions are in a drawn-out fight for their very survival in Wisconsin, Ohio and other states where GOP lawmakers have curbed collective bargaining rights. Also, many union leaders are grousing that the president they worked so hard to elect has not focused enough on job creation and other bold plans to get their members back to work.
“Obama campaigned big, but he’s governing small,” said Larry Hanley, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union.
Labor remains a core Democratic constituency and union leaders will stand with Obama in Detroit this Labor Day, where he will address thousands of rank-and-file members during the city’s annual parade on Monday.
But at the same time, unions have begun shifting money and resources out of Democratic congressional campaigns and back to the states in a furious effort to reverse or limit GOP measures that could wipe out union rolls.
The AFL-CIO’s president, Richard Trumka, says it’s part of a new strategy for labor to build an independent voice separate from the Democratic Party.
Union donations to federal candidates at the beginning of this year were down about 40 percent compared with the same period in 2009, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Last month, a dozen trade unions said they would boycott next year’s Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., over frustration on the economy and to protest the event’s location in a right-to-work state.
“The pendulum has swung a long way,” said Ross Eisenbrey, a vice president of the liberal Economic Policy Institute. “In the next year, I think all unions can really hope for is to keep more bad things from happening and to get as much of a jobs program enacted as possible.”

From Mo Dowd’s column:
If the languid Obama had not done his usual irritating fourth-quarter play, if he had presented a jobs plan a year ago and fought for it, he wouldn’t have needed to elevate the setting. How will he up the ante next time? A speech from the space station?
No, wait — that won’t work. Obummer killed the shuttle and he would have no reliable way to get up there.

Good morning Hamsters. Well, not one drop from Lee last night but at least cooling breezes helped keep us to only 96 yesterday. Good grief, 96 is now only 96. And the 78 this morning was pleasant since the humidity was only 57%.
It’s overcast by empty high clouds; a tempered though still gusty northerly breeze pulls down leaf clusters and branchlets and sends the myriad leaves swirling through the yard and patio. Two red oak branchlets came down in the back yard yesterday, full green leaves and numerous ripe acrons weighing them down so their anchoring branches snapped in the winds. They will be good eating for the woodsy cohort.
The fountain has leafy debris to be scooped out before adding the customary 2 gallons for the day. Plants on the front porch were pummeled this way and that yesterday and are a tad the worse for wear but likely to recover. Those flowers that halfway survived the drought and heat are tough as are the shrubs and decorative grasses. Humble airplane plants can survive just about anything it appears, and besides they are attractive. They froze to the root last winter and came back; they are still healthy in this awful heat if they get a drink every couple of days and still flower. We’ve about decided that whatever survives we should plant more of.

Wonder if we’ll hear anything new on Thursday?
For more than two years the president has been giving “important” jobs speeches — and no wonder. After an $830 billion stimulus and multiple “jobs” bills since, the employment picture has only deteriorated. The economy added zero jobs in August, and 2.4 million fewer people work today than when Obama took office.

#91 Bonecrusher: My back hurts from watching that.
It would seem from the union wailing in OTL #66 that the thugs might just have caught a glimmer of what being a part-time useful-idiot organization is all about when your patron is a patholigical narcissist. All is hunky dory when you’re useful to advancing his cause/ego, but when you aren’t useful any longer—under the bus, bub. Of course to be dusted off the next time you’re possibly useful, so just stand in the corner until summoned. Slow to catch on, aren’t they? 🙂 How’s that hopey-chagey thing working for you? Same goes for the LSM newsies, but they’re more dense than the union thugs.

When the feds start stealing money directly from our bank accounts to pay for O’Erklecare, and the mooooooooooooooooooooooooslims don’t have to pay but get free health care anyway, I fear great bloodshed. When the bulk of the people understand that this is what is happening, there will be riots big time. I can see a mass exodus of politiVSRs from the D party when it starts.

Been busy all day. Church, then breakfast, then I came home to put on some BBQ (brisket) and start making Handsome Son’s birthday cake. He asked for an Italian Cream Cake, which I’ve never made before. I hate it when the recipe for the frosting is half what is needed.
Got the cake made, brisket is ready, and I’m finally sitting down.
Can’t believe the baby I squeezed out (rather long and painfully) is actually legally now to get into all kinds of trouble. Lovely took him to a club last Friday night (since he turned 21 at midnight) and texted me that her brother was having a great time, but opted not to drink.
Smart kid.

I too had been drunk a few times before I was 21. (However, I was in the US Army and it was legal for me to drink.) So it has been rare to be a sensible young person for a long time now…

Well this just bites. Power’s been blinking off all day and now it’s been off for the last hour. We’re getting the power problems from a weak-a$$ed tropical storm, but only about 15 raindrops. 😛

Drove from Waco to Sugar Land this afternoon. Lots of brown haze from dust and some blue haze from grass fires. Approaching Bryan at Hwy 6/6 Hwy Business 6 (Former home of the greatest Blue Bonnet display in the State) the north bound traffic was stacking up. The undeveloped real estate along the north side of Hwy 6 Bypass was burning. TDPs troopers had the northbound Hwy 6 business blocked and sending traffic on to the bypass. Well, bypass in my time when they built it. Hope they limited the damage to the brush.

Colorado County fire that started at Zimmerschite & Bailey Rd was only 3 miles SW of me. Saw the first plume of smoke go up and the wind was 45+ knots running out of the NE to SW. It drove it away from me but a bunch of friends and neighbors lost their homes. Spend much of the afternoon hauling horse/cattle kritters out of harms path. I know of one in the beginning that got caught in the corral and was burned bad enough a call went out to put it down ASAP. Tomorrows another day and along with mopping up, the cleanup and rebuilding begins.

SAN ANTONIO – Up to 3,000 Muslims from around the state are expected to converge Sunday on Six Flags Fiesta Texas for “Muslim Family Day” to celebrate the end of Ramadan and spread the post-9/11 message that most Muslims are peaceful and mainstream.
Families from as far as Corpus Christi, Austin and Waco have committed to attending the event, sponsored by local chapters of the Muslim American Society and the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
I actually think this is a good idea. Hope it goes well.

No relation, just coincidence, to my last post (honest)
Finally, we have evidence that Islamists and even al-Qaeda supporters will play a central role in Libya’s new regime. Up to now there has been reasonable speculation that the U.S. government and NATO might be installing an anti-Western, Islamist government in Libya. Now there’s proof that this is so.
The actual government remains in the hands of non-Islamists, technocrats, ex-regime officials, and moderates. But the armed rebels who actually made the revolution have voted and their idol is…an al-Qaeda guy. Political power, said Mao Zedong, grows out of the barrel of a gun and in Libya’s case this seems a very reasonable expectation.
According to Al Jazeera, the network recommended by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as fair and balanced, Abdul al-Hakim al-Hasadi, also known as Abdelhakim Belhaj, has been named commander of the Tripoli Military Council. He was formerly head of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, an al-Qaeda affiliate. Moderates are understandably nervous.
Exactly what I feared in getting involved with overthrowing Gadaffi.

The future of Michelle Obama’s health kick?
Four obese children are on the brink of being permanently removed from their family by social workers after their parents failed to bring their weight under control.
In the first case of its kind, their mother and father now face what they call the ‘unbearable’ likelihood of never seeing them again.Their three daughters, aged 11, seven and one, and five-year-old son, will either be ‘fostered without contact’ or adopted.
Parents of seven told: Your children are too fat, so you will never see them again

(sticks head out of LurkCave, is puzzled by this phenomena of lowered temperature)
Hello Hamsterousians! Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas! — er, Fort Bend county. Land of skinny dillos and the mud puddle known as the Brazos River.
It’s time for your weekend update from Doctor Lurk! 😈 Just subtract a few degrees and you get basically the same scenario. Dry land. Parched critters. Wondering if/when the groundwater table becomes lowered to the point that the wells run dry. /shiver
I reeeallly don’t want to even consider that, but I wouldn’t want to play ostrich and keep my head in the sand — it could happen.
Those of us who are praying for rain, Mississippi and Louisiana might be a little mad at us. Gotta get the sights dialed in a little better, huh?
Haven’t seen Baby Dillo for a couple days but I found a few baby-sized holes here and there in the yard, mostly under my “prize” (and I use that term loosely) shrub where the mulch is.
Ah, well, it is what it is. On that cheerful realistic note, I hereby retire for the evening. Enjoy your Labor Day festivities and don’t forget to choose a designated driver.
Oh, and for MHarper, you might want to try one of the soaker hoses available at the hardware store. They put out a BUNCH of water, but it doesn’t spray around. You can snake (did I say SNAKE!??!!) ’em around the flowerbeds or whatever and leave them out. Double them back and forth for more saturation. Be careful not to bend them sharply as they are not as sturdy as a regular garden hose. You can even cover them with mulch/dirt and no one will ever know they’re there. 😎
Adee, be careful with that new fresh green hay. Y’all must be vigilant in the storage because it can spontaneously combust. Several barn fires have resulted from the fact that the bales’ internal temperatures have risen, due to moisture (don’t ask me the details). No joke, I’ve seen it myself.
Prayers for the flooded, the wildfired, and others in need.
(retreats back into LurkCave, hearing the siren call of the cold adult beverage in the fridge. Driving not necessary.)

(sticks head out of LurkCave again, as smoke is being smelled from the Cave’s open window)
Hamsterousians, Fort Bend county is apparently experiencing the smoke of a fire reportedly at Katy I-10 @ Hwy 99 which was threatining some commercial buildings. At the time I noticed, the breeze was pretty brisk but it has settled down a bit.
Adee, I would keep a close watch as you are in the wind’s path, as far as I can tell.
I am packing a few things to be ready to throw into the truck if need be. I’ve been in fires and it is NOT fun.
I do not wish to panic anyone. However, the smell of smoke makes me sit up and take notice.

I need to mention that I owe a debt of gratitude to the USMC for pointing out that the Afghans are offended by audible farts. Now my little part time retirement job causes me to come into contact with these people, and since I am the only infidel in the group, I am sometimes subjected to “cultural” differences which cause me inconvenience and other problems. I generally bite my tongue and do not respond to their insults, but this has opened up a whole new avenue for me to properly “express” my views about their behavior. If I had had any idea that something as simple as an audible fart would be so offensive to them, I would have started doing it long ago. Kudos to the military for bringing me up to speed so that I may now properly express myself without ever having to open my mouth.
BTW, once the truth finally comes out about prohibiting our fighting forces from issuing audible farts, does anyone other than me think we will discover that the order originated with a high ranking female officer in the military? $10.00 goes to charity if I’m proven wrong on that count.

Great link on the Bolero clip.On the gas passing thing, I have an electronic Whoopee cushion with a remote control. I think I got it at Spencer’s last Christmas season. Put that bad boy in your underwear and the remote in your pocket and you will be able to make the proper response without straining or misfiring.

I want to hear what kind of part time job puts you in contact with Afghans, and what they do that inconveniences you. Did they make you fast during the day for Ramadan?

Good morning Hamsters. Whee, delightful 76 at 6 and only 57% humidity make for a great start to the day. The breeze woke up with the Sun and is growing apace, flipping from NE to NW and back. Plenty of leaves, acorns, pecans, twigs, and branchlets are down in the yard, and surely more will come today. We had almost 50 mph wind gusts yesterday here at Richmond, and that explains the mess.
Evaporation spurred by the winds is truly amazing. The fountain that was full Saturday was down 2/3 Sunday morning, and the small tank in the side pasture that was likewise full
was down 1/2. The horses didn’t drink that much nor did the woodsy creatures. It’s never gone down that fast in one day. And the high yesterday was 90.It is horrifying looking at the Texas Forest Service map of wildfires in the state (#113 GJT).
TV news reported extensively on the Bastrop conflagration and others nearer to Houston but missed the Bryan area one (#117 gtotracker) and the Colorado County one (#116 CbR, and bless him for his assistance to those in harm’s way). However, when you see the map it isn’t surprising the coverage can’t be complete, unless the broadcast goes on for an hour or so on that topic alone. Frightening that the high winds will be with us for at least another day before the cool front moves in. And no rain. 🙁 -

I actually think this is a good idea
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to comment on the 3000 Muslims at the amusement park or not. But I’d like to ask Darren why he thinks it’s a good idea.
I think the event is very unlikely to show that “most Muslims” here “are mainstream”. It’s much more likely to show that the females in the group are *far* from mainstream America. In other words, the mass gathering will highlight just how different they are. It’ll be hot at the park, but these girls and women will all be wrapped up like lepers. As in Tedtam’s recent report of seeing a Muslim girl who had to wear her jeans and long sleeves to wade at the beach, while Papa Achmed and brother Mohammed were able to wear appropriate seasonal clothing.

I watched “This Week’s Mess” with Gee-i-am WhatABore because I wanted to see BigJournalism’s Dana Loesch take on the media establishment. A few notes and questions:
1) I noticed that Dana rarely had a chance to speak. Was this due to fear, bigotry, or just coincidence?
2) Paul Krugman – does he always look like a deer caught in headlights, or is that his normal appearance?
3) Krugman, et al – are they SERIOUS?! I was listening to what they were saying and found myself looking out of my window, trying to determine which planet I was on.
4) The hostess of this show should never, never wear orange. Never, never, never.
5) Back to Krugman again – I got the distinct impression he was hiding something or was extremely nervous. His eyes kept shifting back and forth (I don’t think he moved his head much), and he looked nervous as all get-out. Makes me wonder…
Ohh, and
6) Was it my imagination, or were all of WhatABore’s questions geared to rip up Perry’s candidacy? -

Re hay bales and combustion: My hubby has relatives up in Deep East Texas, and there’s a timber yard near the Aunt’s house. I remember driving by it on our way to somewhere, and asking about the irrigation cranes that I saw spraying water on the piles of timber. Hubby told me it was to cool down the piles of trees so that they didn’t catch fire. I hadn’t thought of that, and sure enough, I could see wisps of smoke here and there in the piles. Hubby told me that he was visiting one time when they actually had a fire break out.

The spate of shootings left Bloomberg raging yesterday, with the Mayor calling on politicians in Washington to enact stricter gun laws.
Remember folks New York has some of the toughest ANTI-gun laws in Amerika. When you outlaw guns then only criminals will have guns. There are about 40,000 cops in New York City. There are 8,175,133 people living in New York city. That works out to about 1 cop for every 204 people if they were all on duty at the same time. So on a slow day with three shifts that is one cop for about 613 people in 786 square miles
And Bloomberg calls Washington for help??? Muhwahahahaha Point is folks YOU are responsible for your own safety. The cops jobs usually begins AFTER THE INCIDENT has happened.

I have a really good friend who happens to be a lawyer. No really he is a good guy. Seriously. He did not know my “carry” status. No one really does and I like it that way. Anyway in one of the last conversations we had he said exactly this:
I am seeing good people in court that are there because of their desperation to take care of their family. There are so without hope that they are turning to crime and sadly the crime becomes violent. If you are not carrying you should be.

Well Ole Dave is back in Webster, yesterday morning I was watching the storm and the radar and since the dang storm hadn’t really moved in three days along with the huge band of rain just west of me, I decided to shift to “Plan B”,that is to head to Montgomery and take 80 to Meridian Mississippi, hit I 20 and head to Shreveport, then down to 59 and back home. What sealed the deal was when I thought about stopping off at the deer lease in Center Texas, about an hour south of Shreveport. I could check the deer cams and run another 50 rounds of ammo through my new 45, since I didn’t take time to do that in Alabama. I figger I made a good choice since it rained all day at the farm house, (I checked the radar several times while headiing across Mississippi/Louisiana). I got to there about 5 PM and went into town and picked up a small T-Bone, one Russet Tater and a can of Bush’s beans. Cooked the tater in the coleman camp stove oven, warmed up the beans and grilled the steak and ate it under the stars, perfectly clear and dark with the 1/4 moon rising in the west. It got pretty bright when the moon got higher though. It just don’t get no better than that. 😉

Dave, glad you were able to salvage your holiday in spite of the weather anomaly. Musta been nice while you were at the farm to look out and see water — lots of water — falling from the sky.

Welp, just found out that our tenant in our last remaining occupied unit on the San Bernard River has probably skipped out on us.
It’s bad enough to skip out. I’ve spent time with them, helping them out and such. I would hope that they would at least do what their friends did, and call us. Friend called and said that they had to transfer up to Lufkin because of the job, they were sorry that they had to break their lease, and hoped to come back some day. She said they’d try to pay us the remaining rent they owed, but I’m not holding my breath. At least she explained what was happening. Nope, this couple just left the key in the door and skedaddled.
/sigh
If y’all know of anyone looking to rent a unit with riverfront view just outside of Sweeny/W Columbia, we have
onetwo units for rent. -

So much for the “tone of civility”.
And what does HE know about my parentage? Perhaps he’s projecting?
And what about smaller government and fiscal discretion makes the Tea Party anti-worker?
Idjits. They surround us.

But I’d like to ask Darren why he thinks it’s a good idea.
Why not?
And I don’t really care what Muslim dress standards are here in the states. If fact, while I do not care to go to such extremes as theirs, I would like American dress standards to raise up a notch or two.

What that says to me is you have no empathy for Muslim girls who are constrained to dress in an irrational manner by the males in their family. I agree that slutty clothes on females (and the infamous saggy pants on young men) out in public are beneath contempt. But that isn’t what we are talking about here.

Massive wildfire that started in Montgomery County spread to Grimes County, and it began around mid afternoon. Spouse came in the house about 5 pm saying the sky was hazy and it smelled like smoke. When I was out around 4 moving hoses, the sky here was clear and the wind blowing steadily from the north. Channel 11’s 6 pm news was essentially that fire, the Bastrop fire, and the weather news. None of it good other than cooler temps. Since the wind has died down, we no longer can smell the smoke or have haze. This is truly frightening, as it can happen anywhere. City, country, suburbs—makes no difference.
Again we are grateful for the continuous watering that’s kept the yards and around the barn green. Though given the fury of the fires in our part of the state, that might not be good enough. Thoughts come to what happens if we have fire in our area. We have 3 horses and a 2-horse trailer. Who stays behind and hopefully makes the second trip? Neighbors next door have 5 and a 3-horse trailer. What if there’s no time for a second trip? The merciful thing is a bullet through the brain of a horse you love dearly. Hard choice, which I pray most folks will never have to make for any pet.

For the price one should have one of these sitting around or know of a close by friend that has one.http://www.ranchworldads.com/classified.php?listing=9325
I’ve easly gotten 10 horses in and could pack 12 in a pinch when time is short and urgency is the SOP. Works for hurricanes, fires, moving and all other needs, emergency or otherwise.

Anybody out there with a tv who could give me some info on where the fire is in Waller/Montgomery county? I can’t find anything about where it is. I have friends here at the bunker we evacuated and others trying to make it? Any news about location would be helpful.
Thanks’
It is supposed to be southeast which gets it away from me but details are slim.

Perhaps a lot less empathy than you or others may. I agree that much in the muslim world is hypocritical between the genders. But on a sliding scale, the dress hypocracy is not really that much concerning to me.
I hope they have fun at Six Flags. And they do need to follow the rules of the rides.

Now, that heated rhetoric from Jimmy Hoffa is just oozing with Obama’s requested civility, isn’t it? Anybody lately asked Jimmy where his Dad’s remains are? 🙂 Definitely not in Grant’s tomb. He really must be rattled to carry on so in public and video. In the blue state his ilk and the Democrats have pushed into decay. -
