Tuesday Prison Improvement Open Comments

Yesterday, the TDCJ embarked on a new and interesting program in the Darrington Unit near Rosharon. The Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary will be opening an extension campus inside the walls of the prison and will be offering a course of study that will result in the participants earning a bachelor’s degree that will prepare them to be pastors and/or teachers.

The Bachelor of Science in Biblical Studies requires 124 credit hours of classes and will take approximately 4 years of study to complete. The curriculum will be focused on equipping men for Christian Ministry in such a way that they will be able to properly teach, preach and minister to the population of believers within the prison system. Upon their release, they will be equipped to be teachers and pastors.

A similar program has been running for a few years at the notorious Angola Prison in Louisiana. The results there have been nothing short of phenomenal. The program participants continue to live among the other inmates, but begin to act as good examples to the others. This has led to a marked decline in the level of violence in the prison.

State Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, championed the program along with his colleague, John Whitmire, D-Houston, after the lawmakers visited Angola Prison last year to observe a similar program, which has been credited for a 70 percent reduction in violence at Angola since it started in 1995.
“We were both blown away,” Patrick said. “We were able to walk freely in that prison where almost everyone there is serving 50 years or more – major, major criminals. The first night we were there, we went to a gospel chapel service. It was just us. There were no guards. I don’t know that you could do that in a Texas prison.”

The ACLU has a bit of a problem with this, natch. Even though it is entirely voluntary and there is no requirement to proselytize to others or to convert to Christianity or any faith. Likewise the Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

“On the one hand I think we’re very encouraged that they’re providing programming for inmates,” said Dotty Griffith, public education director for Texas ACLU. “At the same time it does appear to be very sectarian in nature … I think it gives us some concerns about separation issues because it seems to exclude other faiths and it would exclude prisoners who might want to study a different denomination or a different religion altogether.”
No taxpayer funds used
The program appears to overstep the permissible bounds of religious chaplaincy programs in prisons, which are not supposed to proselytize, said Alex Luchenitser, senior litigation counsel for Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Maybe they should stop and reflect for a bit on why there are so many people incarcerated and the root causes thereof.

So the ACLU has a problem with the seminary behind bars. Not one word about rampant Muslim recruitment in prisons though, right? Terrorists in training apparently don’t ruffle the delicate sensibilities of the ACLU. Will they sing a different tune if they are the targets?

I’ll be out most of the day. Today Lovely gets fitted for her wedding gown, and then we’re spending the afternoon together. Tonight I have a meeting regarding the upcoming changes in the Mass.

I shall enjoy everything up to the church meeting. It’s being run by my “favorite” deacon. /sarc off

Looks like the ACLU is all blow and no go on this. Notice how carefully they parse their words.

At the same time it does appear to be very sectarian in nature

I think it gives us some concerns

Lemme see if I have this straight: You have a program that, when instituted among THE MOST VIOLENT segment of the population ie prisoners in prison for violent crimes, yields a 70% reduction in prison violence, and the ACLU doesn’t like it because it involves CHRISTIANITY. Why am I not suprised?!? You have a program that is a rousing success and they don’t like it because it works and changes people’s nature and it involves CHRISTIANITY. They keep flying the false canard of ‘separation of church and state’ and no one calls them on it.
One more time, for the record: The phrase ‘separation of church and state’ does not appear in either the Declaration or the Constitution. The phrase was contained in a private letter from Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists Association. The current connotation of the phrase is taken out of context from the sentence from which it was contained and is 180 degrees out of phase from the clear intent of the paragraph and the letter as a whole. For a more complete discussion as well as viewing a copy of the actual letter go here and buy the book.
When one reads the actual letter from Jefferson and the letter that prompted it, and then looks at how the phrase was twisted to mean something that was never intended; blood pressure is sure to rise.

You’re exactly right. From the Constitution:

    The First Amendment states that

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

They are not establishing a religion and they are “practicing the free exercise thereof”

A sampling of the documents showed that the newly published cables included the names of some people who had spoken confidentially to American diplomats and whose identities were marked in the cables with the warning “strictly protect.”

By his extremely reckless behavior, he has just killed the people contained in the documents. When the first one is killed they need to arrest Julian A$$wipe for murder. By his revealing of their names and identities (being reasonably certain that they would be killed were their identity and actions known) it is no different than if he pulled the trigger himself.

Minister Matan Vilnai says Israel received warning that a cell comprised of more than 10 terrorists may carry out attack on Eid al-Fitr as some 1,500 Egyptian troops reportedly mount large-scale operation in Sinai against Jihad operatives

Is it possible that saner heads are starting to rise to the top of Egypt? Is it possible that they see that peace and cooperation with Israel is a much better thing than war? Only time will tell.

The US is set to pass Brazil as the world’s leading exporter of ethanol.

What makes this crazy is that the US is the world’s leading importer of ethanol.

Since the federal renewable fuel mandate classifies sugarcane ethanol as an advanced biofuel, but corn-based ethanol as only a biofuel, it’s quite likely the United States will continue to export corn-based ethanol to Brazil while at the same time importing mass quantities of the sugarcane-based biofuel from Brazil. This looks like we’re moving towards a future that puts us right back where we started: relying on foreign fuel.

Ethanol derived from sugar cane is indistinguishable from that derived from corn which is indistinguishable from that derived from sugar beets. We are exporting corn-based ethanol and importing cane-based ethanol. Why can we not do either, use our own, and avoid shipping it all over the place for nothing?

This guy retaining the use of his eye is prolly a one in a million shot. Incidents like that tend to remind the person just exactly WHO is in charge.

#59 M42: Neither of those qualifies as a rooster tail. You get a rooster tail with a boat when the fabric of the water can not contain the thrust produced by the propeller or water jet. You also get one from a motorcycle in the dirt when the fabric of the dirt can not contain the torque of the rear wheel.
The # 1 flyby (last in the series) is cool because when the jet is close enough to the water AND has reached supersonic speed, the shock wave seems to suck the available excess humidity out of the water and swirl it around the plane. When the jet gains a little altitude, the “vapor halo” vanishes. I have seen pics of vapor halos much higher off the water like this one.

The bride to be said: “A long frilly white dress with a veil.”

The sales clerk hesitated a bit, then said, “Please don’t take this the

“My second husband and I got into such a terrible fight in the limo on our

The “Gore-Bull” warmongers are gunning for Jimmy Dick Perry:

Is Texas governor and presidential candidate Rick Perry a racist? According to the increasingly bombastic Al “expletive deleted” Gore, who was interviewed by Climate Reality Project collaborator Alex Bogusky on Ustream last Friday, Perry’s global warming skepticism qualifies him as one.

Gore related how his “generation watched Bull Connor turning the hose on civil rights demonstrators” and that it was when racists could not answer the question of why blacks were inferior “with integrity” that “the change really started.”

We shall overcome climate skeptics as well, he believes. “We have to win the conversation on climate,” Gore said, just as the conversation on race was won.

    FOLLOW THE WISSIN MONEY

Perry has seen the error of his ways. Gore has not.

“This is an organized effort to attack the reputation of the scientific community as a whole, to attack their integrity, and to slander them with a lie that they are making up the science in order to make money,” Gore said in the online interview. Of course, Gore hasn’t shied away from accusing skeptics of being financed by coal and oil companies.
We and others have documented the manipulated and edited data used by Britain’s Climate Research Unit to “hide the decline” in global temperature, and fraudulent assessments by the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change with conclusions based on single-source anecdotes from obscure journals. They all have been well-funded.

No one has made more money from climate change hype than Gore. According to the U.K.’s Guardian newspaper, just one of the “green” companies in which Gore has invested has received over half a billion dollars in subsidies from the Energy Department.

Looks like somebody is gonna get sued for smearing Michelle Bachmann.

If you’ve been paying attention to the web today, its all atwitter about Bachmann supposedly saying “Who likes white people?” at a rally. Well, it seems the video was doctored (I know, I’m shocked, too) .

My attorney is considering what further action will be necessary, and I have contacted the Bachmann campaign. There are two injured parties, you see. This “On Knees” blogger’s claim that his misleading distortion of Bachmann’s speech was retaliation for her having signed the Iowa marriage pledge is rather interesting in terms of demonstrating malice. But Bachmann’s potential claim for libelous defamation is irrelevant to my potential claim of copyright infringement in having my video pirated for such a purpose.

The website where the video appeared was Wonkette (I know, I’m shocked, too).\, who’s previous good works include a birthday greeting to Trig Palin.

    Subject: Hillbillies

Two hillbillies walk into a bar. While having a shot of whisky, they
    talk about their moonshine
    operation.

Suddenly, a woman at a nearby table, who is eating a sandwich sammich, begins
    to cough. And, after a
minute or so, it becomes apparent that she is in real distress.

One of the hillbillies looks at her and says, ‘Kin ya swallar?’
The woman shakes her head no.

Then he asks, ‘Kin ya breathe?’
The woman begins to turn blue and shakes her head no.

The hillbilly walks over to the woman, lifts up her dress, yanks down
    her drawers and quickly
gives her right butt cheek a lick with his tongue. The woman is so
shocked that she has a violent spasm and the obstruction flies out of
her mouth. As she begins to breathe again, the Hillbilly walks slowly
    back to the bar.

His partner says, ‘Ya know, I’d heerd of that there ‘Hind Lick
Maneuver’ but I ain’t niver seed nobody do it!’

Howdy Hamsterousians! By gosh, I almost became a snake’s meal. Mr. Cottonmouth was RIGHT AT THE BACK DOOR!! In a dark corner. Almost stepped on him, but he hissed at me and at first I thought he was a racoon or something until I saw that white mouth. Egads! That’ll make your heart rate skyrocket!

And of course, at that point he was destined to meet his maker. I helped him attain his destiny. 😈

    Whew.

On a more mellow note, I saw Baby Dillo previous to that. I had been feeling a little (OK, more than a little) guilty because this big, mean ol’ human ran him off the other day when he was only trying to obtain a few morsels of sustenance. Was that the last bit of energy he had? Was I going to be the unwilling cause of his demise? Oh, the cruelty…

He looks real bad. Skinny, skinny, skinny. His shell is beat up and caving in and his head is scarred like something was trying to eat him. He was moving about the back yard OK but he was a little slow. I just let him go about his business. 🙁 I wonder if feeding him pineapple enchiladas would fatten him up a bit? C’mon Bigs, we need your cooking skills here.

Makes ya appreciate your health, doesn’t it?

Prayers to thems that needs ’em.

(retreats back into LurkCave, undecided as to whether to delay gratification of cold adult beverage or … nah, forget that!)

Is your cave out in the wilds? You have lots of wildlife reports lately. I don’t have any armadillos in my neck of town, but if I had one looking pitiful, I might take it to a wildlife rehab center. There are several in Houston. If you want to feed it, try a little bit of canned cat food and some melon or other mild fruit bites.

I am so glad that our government provides such wise stewardship over the significant investment made in the space program.

WASHINGTON — The possible first-ever evacuation of the International Space Station, if a Russian spacecraft is not launched in November, would risk the loss of the orbiting lab, a NASA official has warned.
“There is a greater risk of losing the ISS when it’s unmanned than if it were manned,” Michael Suffredini, the ISS program manager for the US space agency, said on a conference call with reporters.
“The risk increase is not insignificant,” he added.

These people are so wissin incompetent, that they couldn’t get laid in a monkey w****house with a stack of bananas.
