    Good morning.

Last night I watched the first five episodes of Season 1 of Northern Exposure, the glorious oddball comedy that ran for six seasons 1990-1995. It’s held up extremely well. And yes, Super Dave, Janine Turner is as adorable as we all remember.

Where did you find it? I’d like to watch it start to finish since I only saw about half the shows back in the day. And yes, Janine Turner is still smoking. Last I heard she was doing a radio show up in Dallas. FWIW; She is a conservative and has subbed for Hannity but I don’t hold that against her, just trying to get her name out there. 😉

Loved that show, haven’t thought about it for some time. May have to make time to watch it again. The quirky town theme reminds me of the British show “Doc Martin,” which I guess is a cross between ‘Northern Exposure’ (quirky town theme) and ‘House’ (antisocial doctor). In DM, the antisocial aspect is from what seems to be a high functioning autistic aspect, whereas in ‘House’ the friction seems to be caused by constant pain from an injury. In ‘Northern Exposure,’ it was the big city know-it-all learning he didn’t, in fact, know everything.

But the towns in ‘Doc Martin’ and ‘Northern Exposure’ surely provide some comic moments. In both, the main characters seem to smooth out their rough edges as they learn to integrate, at least a little bit.

The theme of trying to fit into a strange culture seems to be a profitable theme for a TV show.

I’m saying they did it reluctantly. My take is this…

Obama was against Kamala’s coronation by Pelosi and Schumer. He thinks the Party should have gone to an open convention and at least pretended to be “democratic.” Barack believes the way this went down as a backroom deal will come back to bite the Dems hard, but now he doesn’t really have a choice. Now, Obama is having to live with the mess he created.

We got the Headlights installed on the Vette yesterday and they look a whole lot better on the car than on-line. The pictures from the vendor showed the light bar across the bottom/side and the two other headlights and park lights but the smokey colored lens hides all but the light bar so I’m really liking them.
FWIW; I’d still rather have the originals if they were available. 😉

Thanks for the birthday salutations, folks. I am still young at 72 today even though I don’t always feel like it. My 36 year old pulmonologist was telling me the other day my breathing and lung capacity had improved and I could live this way for another 15-20 years before I might get worse.

He took out his phone and showed me a lab photo of the tonsils he had removed a few weeks ago. So I told him I was in St. Joseph’s downtown hospital at 4 years old having my tonsillectomy with the new transistor radio from Japan my father bought for me. Gordon McClendon bought KILT in 1952 and brought the hugely popular Top 40 format to Houston. I was listening to it day and night. I was sure those mean looking, stern old nun nurses who never smiled were going to kill me before my parents would come get me.

    1. Tedtam Avatar
      Tedtam

From about age 14 or 15, I had tonsillitis on average every other month for about a year, and then every 2-3 months after that. It wreaked havoc on my band participation. I became quite adept at taking penicillin shots without flinching. Much. I was almost 19 years old and wanted them out before I went to college and was sick every month. Dad finally relented when I pointed out that I could lose my full ride scholarship if I was sick all the time and couldn’t study.

I remember my throat doctor/surgeon calling over his nurse on my first visit, so she could take a personal look at my tonsils. Right before my tonsillectomy, I came down with an infection. Doc had a visiting intern. Once again, I entertained another pair of eyeballs scrutinizing my glands. Doc told him “This is the perfect example of tonsils that have been let go for too long” and proceeded to describe them as “large, leathery, with holes all over”.

Well, that was pleasant. I had the thought of selling tickets to help pay for the operation.

After the surgery, I was informed that they were possibly the largest set of tonsils he’d ever removed. I was expected to start talking that day, but on the fifth day after the surgery – under threat of having to return to the doctor that had inflicted the pain – I managed to barely squeak out a muted, whispered, “Good morning” to my mother. Wow, it hurt. She just smiled, knowing why I made the effort, and said “Okay, I won’t take you back to the doctor.”

I don’t think I really started being able to talk for another few days. Future Hubby helped move me to my new college apartment ten days after my surgery. I wasn’t supposed to do anything strenuous for ten days, but I was so ready to move in I ignored the restrictions. Future Hubby was very careful to make sure I didn’t strain myself, though.

This is great news on a couple of different levels.

Fed Ct Blocks Law Against At-Home Distilling Passed 156 Years Ago

    1) It enables people to be free to create different liquors in their pursuit of happiness.
    2) It removes a tool that tyrants used to oppress We The People.
    3) It helps to shrink the leviathan government.

Trump-appointed US District Judge Mark Pittman in Fort Worth issued this ruling. The idea this law stood for 156 years and no one challenged it under the interstate commerce clause is mind-boggling. The power of the Nanny State has been long and oppressive. The Northern District of Texas has been giving the Left wall-eyed hissy fits all over America.

I don’t use “must read” very often. This deserves it.

There is a reason I’ve been reading Freddie deBoer for years. He describes himself as an old school Marxist, but regularly writes these essays (and books) blowing up the sacred myths of the American Left. He’s a compelling writer even if you don’t agree with him. Now Freddie has gotten himself disinvited from every leftist cocktail and dinner party from Manhattan to DC to San Francisco.

…a coronation which did not require her to receive a single vote from an actual, normal Democratic voter. (It remains the case that she has never received a single vote from any voters outside of California, ever, in her political career, which some might suggest represents a wee bit of risk.) I remain disgusted but not surprised by the Democratic party and its machinations, where not even the smallest fig leaf of democratic process survived Harris’s blitzkrieg approach to the nomination. (That is, having it handed to her by her friends in elite Democratic circles.) And I think Democrats are essentially rerunning 2016, where their loyalty to the Clintonite center-right political machine compelled them to nominate an incredibly flawed candidate in a race in which any generic Democratic governor or senator almost certainly would have won. The party never learns. And so we have the confluence of strategic idiocy and rank elitist control. Well: I decline to obediently get onboard the way that (for example) the entire New York Times Opinion section has. Let me explain.

    It gets better.

Last night was another “let’s not fall asleep until 4:00 a.m.” kinda night. Got up late, made and prayed the daily rosary. Finally settling down after a very nice ‘hey there’ phone call with Hubby.

Hubby has a birthday coming up soon and I had no idea what to get him. During the phone call this morning, I got an idea. He wears Crocs as per his foot doctor. His work boots used to give him extremely painful bone spurs in his heel. It hurt me to watch him limp to the bathroom in the morning. I don’t know how my man managed to work through all the pain he’s gone through the years, but that’s him. Nothing would stop him from feeding and sheltering his family.

The Crocs were life savers. He hasn’t worn anything else since then. The bone spurs disappeared. One pain gone, anyway.

So, he said he’s having a hard time finding new ones in his size. Fortunately for him, he has a wife who knows how to shop online….

Another great quote from my 10:47 AM link.

…but Kamala is a secondary part of the problem. The major problem is that I think the Democrats have essentially abandoned any pretense that the voters get to choose their candidates, which is part of a larger bad dynamic where the party is increasingly ruled by an utterly unaccountable aristocracy of cutthroat neoliberals. This is intertwined with the deepening gerontocracy problem in American politics, in which the only way senescent political leaders leave the stage is in a coffin. This trouble with elite overriding of popular sentiment is far bigger than Kamala Harris. I assure you that if everything had happened in the exact same way, but Mayor Pete was the one selected by the Politburo, I would be just as unhappy about it.

    1. squawkbox Avatar

The biggest part of “the problem” is the electorate. It began there and will end there and when I say end I am not talking about a change in the electorate.

The Episcopal Church continues to double down on suicide.

Some Episcopal priests with nontraditional views on sexuality and human relationships are beginning to assert what they see as their right to put those views into practice.

Their candor has been costly in some cases. One priest was abruptly fired by her bishop and forbidden to have any contact with her vestry or congregation. Another suddenly left one of the largest parishes in the country without explanation, after proposing a book study on the topic. At least two other priests have renounced their ordination vows to escape ecclesiastical discipline.

This is not a previous era’s war over homosexuality, but rather a present-day struggle over polyamory — “many loves.” A broader term is “consensual nonmonogamy” — relationships where everyone involved knows about and consents to a lack of exclusivity in sexual or romantic expression.

The FBI is baffled about exactly what happened to Trump. Really? Really?!

I do love the snark that Mr. C. righteously hurls at the acronym agency:

“Investigators,” the Times soberly informed readers, “have not made a determination on the precise manner in which former President Donald J. Trump was injured.” It could be anything.

If only they had a clue! Of some kind!

During Congressional testimony on Wednesday, confounded FBI Director Christopher “Magoo” Wray told a shocked Representative Jim Jordan (R-Oh.) that, “With respect to former President Trump, there’s some question about whether or not it’s a bullet or shrapnel that hit his ear.”

Who knows what it could have been! Maybe a bullet. Or maybe it was some kind of flying shrapnel. We must also consider the possibility it was a spontaneous psychosomatic injury. Or, maybe a supersonic hummingbird? An oversized mosquito, striking at just the right moment? Mutant head lice? Quarks? A mutton?

Despite the video evidence, the ‘vapor trail bullet picture’ that was posted here recently (and widely), the fact that there was a shooter pointing his gun at the President, medical records after the event, etc., the FBI is still trying to crawdad away from the phrase that “Trump took a bullet”. /spits/

The Navy SEALS don’t just kick bad guy butt. Well, I guess there are bad guys in our government, so there’s that. But they can also kick legal butt, to wit:

Biden’s August, 2021, military jab mandate caused the forced firing of over 8,000 service members who refused the shots on religious grounds, including thousands of Navy SEALs and other soldiers. On top of professionally punishing soldiers who resisted the mandate, the military had also demanded that fired soldiers pay back their signing bonuses and reimburse the government for hundreds of thousands of dollars in training.

Twenty-six SEALs sued. Later, the case expanded to include all Navy service members who raised religious objections to the shots. Yesterday, after a long and difficult case, during which the government stubbornly insisted it was right all along, civil-rights law firm First Liberty announced the government had finally settled the lawsuit.

Among the wins in the settlement:

    1. All soldiers involved will have corrections to their file, showing no wrong doing.
    2. The jab juice refusal cannot be considered in future reviews.
    3. The Navy will make public their new found respect for the religious observations of its members.
    4. Training to better implement #3 for those in command will commence.
    5. Revisions to the policy regarding accommodations for the #3 item will be implemented; note that those guidelines were revised rather quickly during the power grab mass psychological event.
    6. And the Navy, aka “taxpayers,” will pay $1.5M for attorneys’ fees.

    Not included?

The Mail also reported that a group of over 200 soldiers isn’t satisfied with the settlement, since nobody has apologized, no officers have been disciplined for trampling on soldiers’ Constitutional rights, and top brass still suffer from an intolerable infection of viral smugness. So the 200 soldiers vow to continue the war.

They trained warriors. Those types don’t take disrespect lightly. I hope that thorough spankings commence. Perhaps the major recruitment shortfall can be reversed if the military regains some semblance of respectability.

But I’m not holding my breath.

Her license was endangered because she dared to write an ivermectin prescription, and some Walgreens pharmacist raised the alarm about it.

Although the Board’s letter said “no further action will be taken,” I could suggest a few additional actions, like firing the Walgreen’s pharmacist who made the complaint, boycotting the big pharmacies, and requiring Walgreen’s CEO to write “I’m a revolting snitch” a hundred times on the chalk board. But I suppose we’ll have to be happy with what we can get.

  37. Tedtam Avatar
    Tedtam

Finally, regarding Newscum’s sudden “let’s appear Presidential” behavior and commanding the (probably temporary) removal of the vast tent cities infesting his state, Mr. C. makes this point:

I have a different take. If we really wanted to solve this problem, we would find out who is giving the vagrants all those tents, and criminalize that, for aiding and abetting the controlled demolition of our big cities. Without tents, there’d be no homeless camps.

Who is giving drug addicts free tents on demand?

To be clear, I agree we face a horrific social tragedy of widespread drug addiction and mental illnesses (which are probably caused by some pharmaceutical or other, but I digress). We should help those folks, who are after all our sons and daughters and fellow Americans.* But most of all, we should help them by rooting out the people and organizations enabling — if not inviting — people to live that way. Read Shannon’s linked column at 2:27 PM. It’s Jacob Siegel at his best.

A decade after 9/11, as Americans wearied of the war on terror, it became passé and politically suspicious to talk about jihadism or Islamic terrorism. Instead, the Obama national security establishment insisted that extremist violence was not the result of particular ideologies and therefore more prevalent in certain cultures than in others, but rather its own free-floating ideological contagion. Given these criticisms Obama could have tried to end the war on terror, but he chose not to. Instead, Obama’s nascent party state turned counterterrorism into a whole-of-society progressive cause by redirecting its instruments—most notably mass surveillance—against American citizens and the domestic extremists supposedly lurking in their midst.

I think some of them were Drunks with guns. I caught myself laughing a little at first but stopped because some of this was serious. I only watched a few minutes but I am glad that IDIOT didn’t blow his damn fool head off……I know, I know, Darwin,…..

I responded to Texpat’s @ 10:47 about Freddie de Boar but since it is a must read I’ll put it here.
An excellent piece and although I disagree with de Boar on his politics he is dead right on in this article. Oh and it took me awhile, off and on but I RTWDT! 😉

Dang now I have to check out Shannon’s @ 2:27 PM.
Yanno’ right now would be a great time to be a journalist with everything that’s going on. You can’t even get through one thing before another thing pops up. also it is VERY SAD that there only a dozen or so journalists left. The rest of the talking Heads just read the script that is put in front of them and show absolutely NO curiosity about the going on’s in the world.

I opted to make my own mayo tonight. Once I saw the video some time ago, I knew it was a game changer, it’s so easy. I can flavor it however I want, too. Tonight I only used just under a cup of avocado oil (no seed oils for me), one egg, a little splash of apple cider vinegar, and salt. The last time I did this, I used a full cup of oil and it was looser than I wanted. It was thicker tonight, the way I wanted it. Ideally, the container used would be just big enough for the stick blender to fit into, and I have a jar that’s just the right size. I’ve never done it in a bigger bowl, so I’m not sure how well that would work, or if I’d end up “chasing” the ingredients around the bowl.

So delicious. I know Hammy wouldn’t approve, but it well as a condiment to my dinner tonight.

So, how did the mighty Battleship Texas weather Hurricane Beryl in her new berth?

    Isn’t she lovely?

A fine video, produced by an independent, flying videographer.
