Lurker, there are no native mammals in Hawaii. All the mammals here are imports…even the rodents. I did have armadillos at my place in Oak Ridge North, and plenty out the back gate in the woods when I lived at FM 1488 and Texas 242 (College Park). I’m just stocking up on ammo in case Obama gets elected again and… Read more »

(sticks head out of LurkCave, savors another cool night…) Howdy Hamsterousians! Well, here we are again, another evening of “Adventures in Armadilloland” bringing the score to Humans 2, Dillos 0. Another dillo showed up tonight, larger than Baby but not quite as big as Monster Dillo. This time, having had a little practice in the fine art of dillo pouncing,… Read more »

From Robert Heinlein: How anybody expects a man to stay in business with every two-bit wowser in the country claiming a veto over what we can say and can’t say and what we can show and what we can’t show โ€” it’s enough to make you throw up. The whole principle is wrong; it’s like demanding that grown men live… Read more »

If a man were marooned on an island and he had not good works to perform for others, does that mean he would be excluded from Heaven? Others don’t have to be present with you for you to perform good works. For instance, a lot of people pray for others every night. I think that is a small way you… Read more »

So, it does seem that I am accurate to run around the blogoshpere and say that Catholics believe that good works are necessary for salvation.

No, I think it’s a little more nuanced than that. Faith is necessary for salvation. Good works necessarily follow faith.

If the Catholic church we correct in their Godly decisions, Galileo would have had it alot easier. Popes are not infallible in their decisions, nor those advising him.

If a man were marooned on an island and he had not good works to perform for others, does that mean he would be excluded from Heaven? Long story short, God knows who is a good person, and who is contemptible and evil. It is up to Him to weigh it all and decide the final place we shall be.… Read more »

mHarper, well alot of folks don’t realize how much agriculture there is out here in Hawaii. Pineapples are not our only crop, although they are our main export. We also export alot of fish from coast to coast on the mainland. Mexico used to have a thriving pineapple business too until Vietnam undercut them. But most everything we produce costs… Read more »

Darren – I think the Lutheran position sprang from the Reformation when a Catholic Luther criticized (rightly so) his fellow Catholics for twisting the Gospel so that works were used in an attempt to win favor from God. Similarly the clergy sold indulgences, surely a corruption of God’s plan. Luther’s exit also led to a counter-reformation in the Church but… Read more »

No. Catholics and Lutherans are not in full communion.
And considering the direction of the largest Lutheran body, it won’t happen anytime soon. If ever.

Shannon; I actually began reading that 1999 (“Concordia” is it called?) you cited. It was mentioned to me several months ago by an Evangelical Lutheran and he said because of that treatise (if it’s called that) the Evangelical Lutherans were in communon with the Catholic Church. I don’t know how accurate that is though. and Anglican Catholic recently told me… Read more »

Tedtam; From assurances of faith. “There are few more confusing topics than salvation. It goes beyond the standard question posed by Fundamentalists: “Have you been saved?” What the question also means is: “Donโ€™t you wish you had the assurance of salvation?” Evangelicals and Fundamentalists think they do have such an absolute assurance. All they have to do is “accept Christ… Read more »

That means works necessarily come with faith. Faith and works cannot be mutually exclusive. That’s sound logic to me. Darren, I am with Tedtam–I am too darn tired lately to get into a big theological discussion. You’ve asked for a simple explanation of the Catholic position on works vis a vis Grace and justification. I contend there is no such thing. The subject does not lend itself to simple explanation. The closest thing to an abbreviated treatment is contained… Read more »

When it comes to understanding salvation and baptism, I tell my students that baptism opens the doors to God’s grace, but it’s up to us to walk through the doors. Non-Catholics tend to look at baptism as a choice we humans make, whereas Catholics see baptism as a gift bestowed upon us. That’s why we have no problems with infant… Read more »

Notice in the #110 video that the colors change as she drags it across. That is why think it’s a transparency. If that card is played early, in the primaries, it could spell the end for JD. If he survives that card in the primaries, it will resurface in the general. I would MUCH rather see Bachman and/or Cain as both of them are genuine conservatives and have real world biz experience.

Darren, is she moving a transparent cover?

I don’t think so. The cover she’s moving is almost the same shade as the darker square she’s moving the cover to. I think it has to do with the squares surrounding the cover shes moving. It’s seems incredulous but also legitimate.
