LST MEMORIAL no-BREW-HA-HA

Don’t forget our Lone Star Times Memorial Picnic and no-Brew-ha-ha on Sunday, October 17th! It will be at BEAR CREEK PARK . I will try to be there by noon. The “Bring It” page is here Of course, some of the entries are more editorial than helpful. I found that some of our “favorite” LSTers have found the site. Be prepared.

The first person there (I am shooting to be there by noon), please find a good site and put up a flag for the rest of us!  It has been advised to try for a spot on the west side of the park.

I look forward to seeing all of you there!

PS: We might could use another grill for cooking – I don’t know that there will be a park pit available. Update: It seems that there are pits there, hopefully our spot will include a pit and a restroom!

Okay, OleTimer has told me that he has a trailer with living quarters that he can bring (until about 5:00 pm or so), but I’ve checked with the park and he’ll have to park it at the equestrian area. That’s where Barker Cypress dead ends into the trail. There is some open area there, but it’s not near any restrooms. As long as OleTimer doesn’t mind us using his facilities and we can hold it if’n we want to stay after he leaves, we can meet there.

Otherwise, we’ll probably have to meet somewhere along Westheimer Parkway and/or lower Barker Cypress area. Those of you with kids, the southern part of the park is probably more appealing.

    Ideas? Feedback? Pie throwing?

Aw, crap, the satellite view I was hoping to link to didn’t take. I was trying to show the equestrian parking area so you could all see the area available with the trailer.

OleTimer’s offer is great and that location would be fine for us, kids and all. Mine are old enough to keep themselves entertained with no problem. My daughter will probably bring a soccer ball along as that’s what she’s really into these days. My son will probably entertain himself by torturing her in whatever manner possible.

Don’t know exact measurements, but I’d say roughly 3′ wide and 2′ deep? A typical small propane grill. I would think it enough for all of us if we plan / time our cooking well.

To add more angst amongst you, an alternate area is across I-10 at Bear Creek park. It has lots of restrooms-on-a-hill, grills-on-a stick, picnic tables, and a bit further east is a zoo for kids, memorial for veterans, ballfields, jogging trail to work off that yummy bbq and keep Bobby’s eyes busy, etc. It is north of I10, east of Hwy 6, south of Clay Road, west of Eldridge.

The earliest bird can scope out the area, pick out a suitable site (allowing for the movement of sun in the afternoon), plant the LST flag, and await the landing of the flock. I don’t know about the trailer– it won’t be needed and it might not be allowed.

The more spacious picnic area is on the west side of the park. Enter off Clay Road next to the golf course. The other stuff is closer to Eldridge.

#21 Sounds good. I have to start dinner here in a minute, and my time may be limited tonight. (Still trying to turn a mountain into a molehill – of work.) Can you get a map link and a park link and post it to save me a few minutes later?

#20 Dude – It looks like it’s going to be hot dogs. I did pick up 2 packs of jumbo Kosher dogs, since I think we have one or two Semitic friends in our group. If that’s all we’re doing, then a small grill would be fine. If we move to Bear Creek park – if it is rife with restrooms and those pits-on-sticks thingies as our tour guide has suggested – then we might be covered even if we run a little short on grill space.

Anyone else with feedback on the Bear Creek Park thing?

There’s tons of room at BC Park, but the pavilions are prolly all reserved. If you go up Eldridge and turn left into the park, there are several picnic tables with grills and an adjacent playground are, but not much shade. There is ample potty capacity.

Overall, it’s prolly easier to get to because Eldridge is light-free once you get about 1/4 mile away from I-10.

I’m hoping to make it. Gotta see how getting White Fang and Majestic Moose to their R.E. classes will work out.

When I was in college, Hubby-to-be and I would take road trips. I usually had to ask for pit stops. We went to Colorado with his mentor/”father figure” and some friends. I was the only female. I have been forever grateful for his consideration. Every time we hit a town (or a gas station in between towns), he always asked me if I needed to stop, even if the last stop was only thirty minutes ago. I appreciated his thoughtfulness.

I still hope to make it, but my status has definitely switched from green to yellow for this operation.

    It’s been a heck of a week.

Monday’s always suck. I lost my glasses Tuesday night and didn’t find them until Wednesday. My work PC died early Thursday and it took until late last night to get it reloaded properly. After two days off the air, my inbox is a really depressing place, so at the least I have a ton of catch up to deal with today. And to make matters even worse, I woke this morning to find that some dirty bat-rastard scoundrel had shot the nuts off my prized bull.

OK, I don’t have a bull. I’ll do my best to make it and will make that call this evening and let folks know. If I come, I’m still good for bringing the Queso, and if y’all are lucky I might even bring brownies.

I think a good rendevous spot would be the little loop off of Golbow called Koch Lane. It is out of the way, several grills are in the area, the restroom is very obvious (and if it’s closed, the woods are very close) and there will be less traffic. (Less traffic = less confusion. Such a beautiful weekend will bring scads of traffic in the developed area.)

Upon using Koch Lane as a potential base camp, the more adventurous can take the trip to the populated area and enjoy the amenities there, returning to base camp upon exhaustion and/or unbearable hunger pangs. If there is a more suitable site closer to the massive crowds, well, y’all arm-wrestle to make that decision.

Bring lots of water and bug spray. There are stores and gas stations on Hwy 6 (Racetrac south of Clay, a grocery store north of Clay, a minimart on Clay east of 6).

This is a first-come, first-served area, so be flexible. (like, get into hopey-changey mode, hope that you won’t have to change location!)

A bright hunter-orange sign with “LST” on it would be the final touch. And, of course, the Texas and US flags.

Hmmm, maybe I’ll crash this party after all!

The forecast for the shin-dig is partly cloudy with temperatures ranging from the upper 70s to the low 80’s with low humidity, no rain, and an 80% chance of Bob. (Still catching up on work.)

Being from Louisiana, I’m born and bred to drink coffee 24×7 no matter how warm the weather. I recently roasted the last of a stash of Sumatra beans that I scored last fall. Due in part to the traditional drying methods used, as well as their size, these beans do quite well on a darker roast, and are tasting pretty good.

I’ll try to “brew” up a pot and bring it if anyone else is interested.

    #47 coffee sounds good!

Anyone giving clues what part of the park I should look in first?

    OK, here are some directions:

From I-10 east or westbound, exit State Hwy 6. Go north. You may turn east (right) on Patterson Drive, then north (left) on Bear Creek Drive, then east (right) on Golbow, then right on Koch.

If the road is blocked or gates closed (or you pass Patterson), continue on 6 and go north to Clay, then turn right, take the entrance to the park on the right (not the golf course) which is Bear Creek Drive, then left on Golbow, right on Koch.

You can also exit N. Eldridge, go north, then west (left) on War Memorial Drive. Then left on Sullins Way, right on Brandt, left on Golbow, left on Koch.

From the northern areas, go south on Hwy 6, go east (left) on Clay Rd, right onto Bear Creek into the park PAST the golf course, left on Golbow, right on Koch.

You may bring compasses to practice your land navigation. That’ll keep the kids occupied! Treasure hunt, anyone??

    Appreciate the clues above!

I was only seeking the general plan – Bear Creek’s been my old stomping grounds since high school (when there was no golf course yet and the entire place was a crazy party zone)…………………it’s grown so huge over the years I just wanted a good place to start the search.

Sorry I didn’t make it. Y’all came in second on the priority list. Woke up this morning to a fencing issue that left me a choice to fix NOW or come to the shindig and possibly loose mares and next years breedings to coyotes. Just got finished here at dusk so ya know what my choice was. If’n there be another gathern I’ll plan on making it.

Had a fun time myself… good food… good conversation. Good to see those again I haven’t seen in too long and good to meet some new folks.

    🙂

P.S. We managed to pretty well avoid the political conversation entirely. That’s a good thing! This was supposed to be relaxing and it was. Hope to do it again soon.

Glad you all had a good time. Hope my directions were adequate. It has been a year or so since I was there.

    How about a head count?

Hope there will be another one soon for the ones who couldn’t make it this time!
