Tuesday “Who’s Your Nanny?” Open Comments

Again, as I stumbled around the internet world, I came across this sci-fi short story. As I read it, I thought to myself “What a perfect example of liberalism!” The elements that drew me to that conclusion:
1) A crack- and alcohol- addicted single mother.
2) A baby in need of care.
3) The mother is not encouraged nor forced to tend to her motherly duties.
4) A surrogate is used instead of the real mother, and society is okay with this.
5) When the real authority figure (mother) is told of a problem, the authority figure avoids taking responsibility.
6) As a matter of fact, she forces responsibility onto another entity.
7) The government inserts itself into the structure of the family unit, assuming that it knows best.
8) Par of the solution involves scaring the heck out of people, specifically little babies, in this case.
9) The solution is inadequate.
10) When a real, valid attempt is made to rectify the situation, panties all over the nation go into wad mode.
11) The one trying to fix the situation is blamed for creating a problem, instead of the crack head mother.
12) Society is fine with simulated love as a replacement for real love.
13) The only entity with any sense and logic is not a real person.
14) When the situation becomes known, protests break out, albeit protest gatherings of an electronic and spectator variety.
15) Some of the solutions involved eliminating the robot, who offended their sensibilities, and not the irresponsible mother.
16) Lawyers inserted themselves into a situation that didn’t really require them to solve a problem.
17) Crack mom sued the robot company for doing its job.
18) Instead of solving a real problem, society decided to try to hide it and build a false sense of self-esteem: “This incident did not affect the doctrine that supplying crack mothers with household robots had been a success. It significantly reduced the time they spent on the streets, and having clean apartments improved their morale somewhat. ”
19) A news interview was scheduled, and the actress doing the interview kept repeating her question, trying to get the answer she wanted, and not the answer that reflected the truth. What’s that movie quote? “You can’t handle the truth!”
20) I’ll let the final few paragraphs make the last point:

The incident increased the demand for actual child-care robots, which were allowed five years later. The consequences were pretty much what the opponents had feared. Many children grew up more attached to their robot nannies than to their actual parents.
This was mitigated by making the robot nannies somewhat severe and offering parents advice on how to compete for their children’s love. This sometimes worked. Moreover, the robots were programmed so that the nicer the parents were, the nicer the robot would be, still letting the parents win the contest for the children’s affections. This often worked.

I found one sentence to be particularly humorous: “Through the magic of modern audio systems children don’t hear the bad language, and women can only hear it if they assure R781 that they are not ladies. ” Oh, and the obvious over use of polling.
This story just begs to be dissected and discussed. There’s already so much of this reflected in our society already. Are we headed down this road now? I think the answer is obvious. But this whole story is a nice stick-in-the-eye to the left. The funniest part of the whole tale is that the lefties won’t understand exactly what this story is about.

On the movie coming out in October to help about Obama get BinLaden, here’s a good insight:

In addition to the desperate obvious ‘October surprise’ quality of this stunt, the cynicism revealed by the White House’s active facilitation of this film is breathtaking. It tells us something important about the Obama White House, and its readiness to abandon its most dearly-held beliefs and even its worldview on the alter of political expediency.

On nearly every issue, the president and others from his administration (not to mention the media) lecture us on the need to be sensitive to the feelings and self-image of the Muslim world. This time, however, the White House believes a bounce in the final weeks before the conclusion of a tough re-election campaign is more important than (as the president himself put it, “spiking the football” by antagonistically) reminding the world who was responsible for Bin Laden’s death.

Regardless of the merits or failings of the Obama administration’s concern for the feelings of the Muslim world, cooperating with the filmmakers displays an inconsistency that should not go by unremarked upon. Sometimes this hypersensitivity, when translated into policy, is laughably unserious– like the re-tooling of NASA to “reach out to the Muslim world.” After killing Bin Laden, Obama himself insisted America keep its celebrations subdued and decline to “spike the football,” even going so far as to protect the dignity of the arch-terrorist’s corpse so as not to antagonize the ‘Arab street.’

So much for getting our moral compass back or something.

More insidious, however, is the compromises the Obama administration is willing to make on issues of free expression when criticism of Islam comes into play. A lone man in Florida threatening to burn a koran was enough to to imperil American national security half a world away, both Obama and his chief general said. Obama’s State Department, too, is increasingly embracing the Shariah-adherent definitions of free speech promoted by the Organization of the Islamic Conference– which plans to enforce blasphemy of Islam. Of course, American free speech is circumscribed by the threat actual violence from a Muslim world even its biggest apologists implicitly concede is highly combustible.

If the delicate emotions of the Muslim world– manifested in the degree to which they’re ready to cause violence and mayhem worldwide– are enough to circumscribe the First Amendment of the Constitution, shouldn’t it also discourage a movie about killing a famous Muslim? But alas, not hurting the feelings of Muslims by showing ‘Crusader’ soldiers killing a Mujahid in cold blood (on Pakistan’s Islamic soil) is trumped by the importance of Obama’s reelection.

Would this mean Obama’s politicizing the war for political gain? Where have a heard a similar accusation before?

Alex Jones saying SEAL Team 6 was mmurdered to cover up not the “fsact” that they didn’t really kill Osama Bin Laden but rather another terrorist? And using Pat Tillman as an example of someone who was murdered because he was going to blow the whistle on opium in Afghanistan? Good grief!

Satan has a difficult job deciding if he would really want this guy at all? Think of the possibilities of conspiracies from Hell.

“God sent me here just to shut me up.”

    or

Alex Jones needs to slow down on the conspiracy theories. The current administration no longer sees a need to engage in clandestine operations or cover-ups – it just conducts its nefarious thuggery right out in the open daring anyone to challenge it. It’s difficult to accept that there is no longer a hidden agenda, but looks to me like the government no longer feel it necessary to account to it’s citizens.

Who is rioting in England and why? The story is so PC that it says thugs, yobs, hooded youths, etc. Almost all the pix taken of looters show they are black.

Gangs of looters – who appeared to be teenagers and young adults from a range of different backgrounds – raided hundreds of shops and businesses across London, making off with TVs and other electrical goods, cigarettes, clothes and alcohol.

My cow of a state representative came up with a solution to the problems Tedtam outlined. Decriminalize retroactive abortions (aka infanticide):

In contrast to a first degree felony, a state jail felony carries a maximum sentence of two years and a minimum of 180 days, the Austin American-Statesman reports. At present, the murder of anyone under the age of six brings a capital murder charge.

The bill was introduced by Rep. Jessica Farrar (D-Houston). Though Rep. Farrar is a self-described Catholic, NARAL Pro-Choice Texas has praised her as “a fierce supporter of family planning and reproductive choice.”

This disgusting sack of flesh attends my parish, at least during election season. I skip communion if she’s in front of me. She soils the sacred event.

#12 Hambone, someone disagrees with you; Jessica Farrar, You Rock!

But Texas state Rep. Jessica Farrar said her proposal to mandate the vaccine for girls entering sixth grade is aimed at protecting children whose parents are less informed about or less interested in preventative health care.

A snippet of a conversation between George Will and Steve Ratteno “This Week”:

As the debate continued, Will pulled out his ace in the hole. See, what Rattner failed to realize — or realized but didn’t want to admit — is that there were actually more Democrats in the House that eventually voted against the compromise than Republicans. That point wasn’t lost to Will:

“You do know that 95 House Democrats voted against raising the debt ceiling as compared to only 66 House Republicans. You do know that 26 Democratic Senators voted against raising the debt ceiling?”

Will makes a good point. But guess what? Amanpour quickly changed the subject, giving Rattner an out and shielding him from having to respond to the the point.

Heh, Rattner got snagged and Amanpour, deliberate or not, covered his back.

Is Obama Smart? A case study in stupid is as stupid does.

When it comes to piloting, Barack Obama seems to think he’s the political equivalent of Charles Lindbergh, Chuck Yeager and—in a “Fly Me to the Moon” sort of way—Nat King Cole rolled into one. “I think I’m a better speech writer than my speech writers,” he reportedly told an aide in 2008. “I know more about policies on any particular issue than my policy directors. And I’ll tell you right now that I’m . . . a better political director than my political director.”
On another occasion—at the 2004 Democratic convention—Mr. Obama explained to a Chicago Tribune reporter that “I’m LeBron, baby. I can play at this level. I got game.”
    Snip~
I don’t buy it. I just think the president isn’t very bright.
Socrates taught that wisdom begins in the recognition of how little we know. Mr. Obama is perpetually intent on telling us how much he knows. Aristotle wrote that the type of intelligence most needed in politics is prudence, which in turn requires experience. Mr. Obama came to office with no experience. Plutarch warned that flattery “makes itself an obstacle and pestilence to great houses and great affairs.”
    Snip~
Then there’s his habit of never trimming his sails, much less tacking to the prevailing wind. When Bill Clinton got hammered on health care, he reverted to centrist course and passed welfare reform. When it looked like the Iraq war was going to be lost, George Bush fired Don Rumsfeld and ordered the surge.

Mr. Obama, by contrast, appears to consider himself immune from error. Perhaps this explains why he has now doubled down on Heckuva Job Geithner. It also explains his insulting and politically inept habit of suggesting—whether the issue is health care, or Arab-Israeli peace, or change we can believe in at some point in God’s good time—that the fault always lies in the failure of his audiences to listen attentively. It doesn’t. In politics, a failure of communication is always the fault of the communicator.
    Finally~
But it takes actual smarts to understand that glibness and self-belief are not sufficient proof of genuine intelligence. Stupid is as stupid does, said the great philosopher Forrest Gump. The presidency of Barack Obama is a case study in stupid does.

#27 bone – I don’t know why more priests don’t refuse communion to politicians who ignore their reconciliation promise to “…do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid that which leads me to sin.” Hey, I’m a sinner too but I don’t actively work to codify my sins into law through government legislation, thereby leading a multitude of others to possible eternal damnation.

Refusing to serve Communion would also put the Eucharistic ministers in an awkward position. The way it should be handled is the priest should privately tell Ms. Farrar she should not be receiving communion until she is truly contrite. In the end, she’ll face her final arbiter anyway. And I think that’s probably binding arbitration.

Let me offer a student outsider’s analysis…subject to correction from the many Catholics on the couch.
The Catholic episcopate is a relatively large bureaucracy. A lowly priest rarely takes a public, controversial stand. He answers to a Bishop who answers to an Archbishop. I’m not sure how the Cardinals fit here, but I have long assumed they are specially honored Bishops. Bishops do have a relatively large amount of autonomy; some use their position to take very public stands on issues of the day, some don’t, choosing instead to allow the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (a relatively liberal group, lately) to do their job as the official public policy arm of US Catholic Bishops.
Excommunication is a serious penalty that a priest has no authority to inflict.

I thought the pro-choice position for Catholics rendered them in jeopardy of excommunication, why does this never happen?

You are correct. They are in jeopardy of excommunication.

If she were to present herself to the pastor or bishop to receive communion, they might refuse her or at least ask her about it. Lay ministers should not be put in that position by either the pastor/bishop or the communicant in question.

As far as why they are not excommunicated – it is a pastoral decision. Prevailing thought is that her soul is most liable to be saved if she remains in the Church than if she is forced out. The pastor/bishop can and should provide guidance to her; what she actually does gets into that whole free will thing.

In the end, God will make the call. I won’t presume to say one way or another what his judgement should be. He created everything and made the rules; he gets to make those kinds of decisions.

The priest is putting himself in jeopardy by not taking a firm stand for Righteousness.
Romans 1:18-32 basically describes the D party. Even though each individual may not practice all of the described behavior, they certainly don’t argue against it and they vote in favor of it, trying to codify it into acceptable behavior – in spite of what THE WORD clearly states.

EDITORIAL: Markets to Obama: shut up

The president refuses to admit that he is part of the problem. “There will always be economic factors that we can’t control,” he said. “Earthquakes, spikes in oil prices, slowdowns in other parts of the world,” seemingly arguing that these factors have something to do with the current crisis, which they do not.

    /snip

Even the prospective future budget “cuts” in the debt ceiling agreement still institutionalize $7 trillion in spending beyond the government’s means over the next ten years. This is the problem, not earthquakes.

Actually, bishops don’t really answer to anyone except Il Papa. Cardinals are bishops of an elevated rank/status. Some Cardinals are bishops of a diocese, others are in some other office in the Church (offices in the Curia in Rome, special secretaries/ambassadors/nuncios, etc). Daniel Cardinal DiNardo is a Cardinal who is also the archbishop of the Dicese of Galveston-Houston. He also has (or ought to have) a couple of auxiliary bishops for the diocese, as there are certain rites only bishops are allowed to perform. Bishops in the diceses around the greater Houston area generally defer to his judgement, but they are not obligated to.

The USCCB can be fairly socially liberal about some things. Some things, they are well to the right of virtually everyone else (same-sex marriage, abortion, fetal stem cell research, in vitro fertilization, etc.).

Excommunication is a serious penalty that a priest has no authority to inflict.

Right-o. Even bishops have to go through a fairly drawn out process.

Nebraska Bishop excommunicates hundreds in March of 1966…..

Members of multiple organizations in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska were excommunicated by Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz in March 1996 for promoting positions he deemed “totally incompatible with the Catholic faith”.[2] The organizations include Call to Action, Catholics for a Free Choice, Planned Parenthood, the Hemlock Society, the Freemasons, and the Society of St. Pius X. The Vatican later confirmed the excommunication of Call to Action members in November 2006.[2]—wikipedia

We are down to only 3 cardinals that visit our seed banquet spread on the patio every evening. Previous summers, the cardinals would not arrive until late in the twilight. This year, they have learned that there will not be any seeds left by then, so they fly in with the doves, pigeons, sparrows, and a few bluejays at 7 pm.

Another change this year is that sunflower seeds have become so expensive that I have stopped buying them unless I see a good sale. I used to put out both sunflower seeds and mixed bird seed that contained some black oil sunflower seeds. We have quite a few pigeons coming in, a flock of about 50 that live under a bridge 1/4 mile away. The pidggies used to eat sunflower seeds then fly away. Now they peck out the black seeds as fast and frantically as they can, then linger and work on the small red, yellow and white seeds. It took them only ONE DAY without as many black seeds as they wanted to change their behavior.

Warrens was never a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; rather, he was part of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. One church has nothing to do in affiliation with the other. The FLDS broke of from the mainstream LDS church decades ago.

That’s why he’s not a “phony Mormon” since he was never a member of the LDS church. He wasn’t a Mormon at all. Furthermore, I don’t think Warrens ever pretended to be part of anything but an FLDS leader.

The jail’s preliminary investigation found Goetzee “surreptitiously swallowed toilet tissue” on Sunday. While an autopsy is still pending from the Orleans Parish coroner’s office, the jail concluded that Goetzee was able to asphyxiate himself with the tissue paper.

I hope it was clean and unused toilet paper. Yikes!

The principal last year invited a priest over to the campus to give it a blessing just before TAKS testing started for the 6th Grade. Students and faculty were all invited to join if they desired. I dd join and in the process I was sprayed with holy water. I posted about this on this site Hamous then pronounced me Catholic. (Wagonburner expressed surprised that I didn’t disintegrate). So, next year I think the principal will reinvite the priest over for another blessing ofthe campus. I’ll join that one too.

Bummer. Looks like they’re gonna get the three they need to take back control of the WI senate. Couple of things upcoming may indicate its a short-lived victory. Two Dems face recall elections next week. And Walker signed a redistricting plan into law tonight that would probably favor Republicans in 2012. Plus there’s no way the Dem senate can reverse the reforms Walker has put in place this year.

#66 ST, I know the folks who own the training stable. Jennifer Goslin’s mother Gwen and father John were my riding teachers when we first moved to Houston in 1969. Jennifer was a toddler then. Many of our horse riding friends over they years started out at her parents’ barn west of Houston.

The loss of dear horses is so sad. And for the Goslins the loss of the large stable (that was not insured according to the Chronicle’s website report) has to be doubly devastating. Hope the horse owners had insured their horses.

Just the same as with Healthulus. The only way to get it repealed is to get majorities in both houses and someone other than the current chief executive.

Update: At 12:30 ET, News 3 in Wisconsin calls the race for Darling. The GOP retains control of the senate, 17/16, with two shots to increase that advantage next week. After months of agitation over the collective bargaining law, the supreme court election, and now the recalls, they haven’t regained control of anything. Now they have to go for the big prize to try to redeem themselves.

Good morning Hamsters. And it is a good morning in Wisconsin. Alberta Darling wins her recall election, making it 4 Pubbies to 2 Dems winning. Control of the Senate stays in Pubbie hands. The Dems were as usual howling about Waukesha County being late with election results–that’s cheating ya know ’cause they don’t know how many bogus votes they have to invent to win an election. The two Pubbies who lost were in the weakest positions, one having barely been elected in a largely Dem district last November and the other being a rather weak candidate. On to the Dem recall elections next week. The Unionistas in and out of state spent big hunks of their treasuries on these recalls and didn’t get much for their money.
Rain chances are nil again today. Started at 77 and stuffy at 6, with all likely to go downhill from there.
