The Original Meeting House at Washington-on-the-Brazos for the Republic of Texas Convention on March 1 & 2, 1836

PHOTO: circa 1890s

The convention held at Washington-on-the-Brazos on March 1, 1836, was quite different from the Consultation. Forty-one delegates were present at the opening session, and fifty-nine individuals attended the convention at some time. Two delegates (José Francisco Ruiz and José Antonio Navarro of Bexar) were native Texans, and one (Lorenzo de Zavala) had been born in Mexico. Only ten of the delegates had been in Texas by 1836. A majority were from other places-primarily from the United States, but also from Europe. Two-thirds of the delegates were not yet forty years old. Several had broad political experience. Samuel P. Carson of Pecan Point and Robert Potter of Nacogdoches had served, respectively, in the North Carolina legislature and in the United States House of Representatives. Richard Ellis, representing the Red River district and president of the convention, and Martin Parmer of San Augustine, had participated in constitutional conventions in Alabama (1819) and Missouri (1821), respectively. Sam Houston, a former United States congressman and governor of Tennessee, was a close friend of United States president Andrew Jackson. Houston was chosen commander in chief of the revolutionary army and left the convention early to take charge of the forces gathering at Gonzales. He had control of all troops in the field-militia, volunteers, and regular army enlistees. The convention delegates knew they must declare independence-or submit to Mexican authority. If they chose independence they had to draft a constitution for a new nation, establish a strong provisional government, and prepare to combat the Mexican armies invading Texas.

On March 1 George C. Childress, who had recently visited President Jackson in Tennessee, presented a resolution calling for independence. At its adoption, the chairman of the convention appointed Childress to head a committee of five to draft a declaration of independence. When the committee met that evening, Childress drew from his pocket a statement he had brought from Tennessee that followed the outline and main features of the United States Declaration of Independence. The next day, March 2, the delegates unanimously adopted Childress’s suggestion for independence. Ultimately fifty-eight members signed the document. Thus was born the Republic of Texas.

Inflation + Taxes: Somebody mentioned that they bought a pack of cigarettes for the first time in years and their gaster was flabbered that they cost $7/pack.  When I was in Jr. High they were $.25/pack.  I never smoked them, but I remember the price.  Regular gasoline was about the same price back then.

  8. Tedtam Avatar

Many moons ago I had a conversation with a coworker who smoked about the cost of her addiction. She was looking for motivation to quit. We calculated the cost and it was $500 a year.

Yeah, that would probably be per month now.

I remember how she kept a mint on top of her pack. When she smoked she’d put the mint in her mouth, because she didn’t like the regular cigarette taste and she didn’t like menthol cigs.

Can you imagine the conversations when the wives got together?

And how much input did wives have on building the new nation?

“Honey, I’m home!  You’ll never guess what Sam said today….”

Yeah, I know that many, if any, of the wives weren’t right there. But I’m sure there were letters during and conversations beforehand.

    DECLASSÉ ☙ Thursday, March 2, 2023 ☙ C&C NEWS

Good morning, C&C, and Happy Thursday! Your roundup today includes: the Senate moves expeditiously to declassify covid origins information; DeSantis and Ladapo both drop their new books; Texas bill would pay couples to make babies; a recap of recent non-misinformation, or un-misinformation, or whatever—it’s a lot of disinformation that is suddenly just “information”; Bill Maher doesn’t trust the media, for some reason; and Rasmussen’s overlooked poll on covid injuries.

    News:

Setting a new land speed record, the democrat-controlled United States Senate UNANIMOUSLY passed a bill last night to declassify ALL U.S. government information related to covid origins, every bit of it, you betcha.

WOW! That did surprise me!  There must be an ulterior motive, perhaps the previously presented idea that China is now a “bad guy” since it’s aligning with Russia, and so their favorable protection has been thrown out the back door.   Reading on…

I dunno, you tell me. This train looks like it’s on a fast track. After all this time,… it seems likely that we will all be totally outraged, and then folks will start demanding reparations from China, which will then incite counter-accusations and demands from the Chinese side.

    But why? And why now?

Now China is threatening Elon Musk. Personally.  Musk may be “biting the hand that feeds him”.

Most folks interpreted the warning to mean China wants Twitter to clamp down on all this official U.S. government information fingering China for a covid lab leak. That isn’t going to happen, obviously, but Elon Musk HAS been notably quiet about politics lately, tweeting instead about SpaceX launches, population problems, and Tesla’s sustainable energy plan.

In other words, Elon is staying out of it, personally. But there’s no sign that Twitter is throttling lab leak discussions.

I’m sure the whole “let the people talk amongst themselves” idea is so foreign to Beijing that they don’t understand why Twitter is letting these discussions occur.

  14. Tedtam Avatar

DeSantis’ new book is climbing the charts.  I’ve seen him on two or three shows talking about it.  I consider this book tour a “soft start” to his presidential campaign.

    Speaking of books:

Florida’s courageous Surgeon General Dr. Joe Ladapo also just released his own book, “Transcend Fear (A Blueprint for Mindful Leadership in Public Health).” The book’s Amazon listing includes a prominent banner helping readers find the CDC so they can get ‘reliable’ misinformation about the covid vaccines:

I don’t know whether to laugh or just roll my eyes so hard they roll across the floor.

Ladapo and DeSantis have been a formidable team in combating the WLR mis/information.  Childers speculates that Ladapo may also have some political aspirations of his own.

Can you imagine President DeSantis making Ladapo the Surgeon General?

Liberals might actually leave the country.  Fur reals.

  15. Tedtam Avatar

Yesterday, Texas State Representative Bryan Slaton filed HB2889 titled “Providing Property Tax Relief to Families.”

The bill, which is already massively triggering liberals, would give Texas families property tax relief based on how many kids they have. It’s intended to promote marriage, discourage divorce, and encourage having or adopting kids. Under the proposed law, any couple who marries and stays married gets a 10% property tax credit. A family with four or more biological or adopted kids would get a 40% tax credit, and — if you can imagine this — for extremely intimate couples having ten or more kids, up to a complete 100% tax credit.

We have to do SOMETHING about population decline.

When liberalism is based upon “do what feels good” and “celebrate every loose moral,” families suffer.  Families are the building block of any society.  Families are to be encouraged.

After all, that is why God established the man-woman relationship.  I like this.  The selfish won’t procreate, or will barely procreate.

And the folks at The Church of the Annunciation downtown will get quite a bit of breathing room.  They are observant Catholics and do not indulge in birth control.  I do love hanging out before and after mass, hugging the kids and finding parents willing to share their babies with me.  It’s maternal nirvana.

  16. Tedtam Avatar

Let’s recap the major conspiracy theories that all passed their six month expiration date over the last two weeks and are suddenly no longer misinformation. And, what do you call it when something that was officially misinformation is now just “information?” Does it become “un-misinformation”? Or, is it now “de-misinformation,” or just “re-information?”

How many memes out there reflect they “what was once misinformation/conspiracy is now truth”?

    — As mentioned above, the Wuhan lab leak is no longer a conspiracy theory,…

    — A recent Lancet meta-analysis of SIXTY-FIVE other studies concluded that natural immunity is as good as, or better than, vaccine acquired immunity. …

    — A George Mason University study compared areas with and without jab mandates, and concluded that the mandates neither increased vaccine uptake nor reduced covid cases. …

    — And last but not least, the “gold standard” Cochrane meta-review pretty much definitely ended the mask debate: masks don’t work,… But they are very effective for virtue signaling though.

    /snip

Now it appears that *I*… was following the science all along. THEY are the science deniers. And I bet a lot of you people are in the same boat as me.

    /snip

So what on Earth is going on the last couple weeks? At least part of the explanation must include the freeing of Twitter, because of the Missouri v. Biden case, and because of the “Twitter files” exposure of government meddling in social media. At minimum, the lawsuit and those disclosures forced the government to stop, at least for the time being, or at least to stop being so obvious about it. That allowed one floodgate of free discourse to open, and the truth was out and running.

That’s my best explanation. But I knew SOMETHING like this was coming, as I predicted in my last year-end post. A pressure had been mounting and it was obvious that something had to give.

    /snip

The fact-checkers are now but shadows of their former selves. In other words, I bet the fact checking industry is about to fall on hard times.

    One can dream.

The Chinese know precisely what freedom of speech means.  They simply believe individuals cannot be trusted to make free choices about their thoughts and words.

Without freedom of speech, all subsequent rights fall into the abyss.

China believes human beings have no natural rights endowed by God because they think God is a myth.  People are just higher-functioning animals to be trained and controlled like circus performers.

In case you missed it, Rasmussen released results of a survey of 1,000 U.S. adults last month, which showed that nearly a third of Americans believe that someone they know died from a vaccine injury, and at least 7% of Americans reported having personally experienced a “major” side effect from the shots:

    [insert series of charts]

This Rasmussen poll should be a much bigger story than it has been. These polls alone should be sufficient proof to shift the burden to the FDA and the CDC to disprove Rasmussen’s findings.

Really can’t add to Childers’ response to this.  He suggests increasing the sample size until it gets attention because it can’t be ignored any more.

We’re all familiar with El Gordo’s Paleolithic philosophies, but were you aware he’s turning San Saba into an EPA Toxic Waste Site all by himself with his Keto diet obsession ?

People hoping to shed a few pounds often turn to keto and paleo diets, but, according to a Tulane University study, those weight loss methods score among the lowest on overall nutrition quality and among the highest on carbon emissions.

“We suspected the negative climate impacts because they’re meat-centric, but no one had really compared all these diets — as they are chosen by individuals, instead of prescribed by experts — to each other using a common framework,” study senior author Diego Rose said in a statement Tuesday.

    and,

The keto diet — which counts Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry and Kim Kardashian [and El Gordo] as celebrity devotees — prioritizes high amounts of fat and low amounts of carbs. The diet was estimated to generate around 6.6 pounds of carbon dioxide for every 1,000 calories consumed.

    plus this,

Researchers noted that if a third of participating omnivores began eating a vegetarian diet, 340 million passenger vehicle miles could be eliminated daily on average.

3 people thought this was a top-notch article.

    8 readers rendered it so-so.

As many of you may know or at least suspect, the FAA is charged with administering the airspace of the USA and the airworthiness of the aircraft using it.  It includes certifications for pilots, planes, drones, balloons, other objects and everything related to aircraft operations.  Anyway, recently there have been quite a few near misses, some attribute this to DEI requirements where the qualifications are strictly limited to skin color and not related to skills.  Anyway, in an effort to improve safety at all levels, the Bidet Administration has nominated an individual to serve as Administrator of the FAA.  Listen to the expertise on display by this distinguished individual who has been hand picked to oversee our nation’s airspace and related safety matters.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEj2Yq0okzU

He received confirmation on the 12th that the Alamo had fallen six days earlier.

On the 13th, they burned Gonzales to the ground and headed East, with Santa Anna’s 1500 man army in pursuit.

On the 14th, Col. Fannin received orders from Houston to abandon Goliad and retreat with his 400-man army  to Victoria, behind the natural defenses of the Guadalupe River. “The immediate advance of the enemy may be confidently expected,” Houston warned Fannin. “Prompt movements are therefore highly important.”

Fannin, however, lacked the same urgency as the orders he received on March 14, 1836. The finely bred, West Point-trained officer lingered for days as a 1,400-man army led by Santa Anna’s chief lieutenant, General Jose de Urrea, closed in on Goliad. Whether indecisive, stubborn or loyal to the rebels away on missions whom he did not want to abandon, Fannin remained in Goliad until the morning of March 19. By the time the colonel ordered the retreat, it was too late. Urrea’s advance riders had already spotted the Texan defenses, and the main army was just hours behind.

Getting things a little out of order, and despite having my post exiled to the ether, my #22 shows the level of expertise required to become administrator of the FAA as determined by the Biden administration.

To help put it in context, here is a brief video of the near misses (or near hits) in the airline world (not including private planes and others considered General Aviation).  At this rate, it’s just a matter of time before we have another Tenerif on our hands.  The Biden appointee does not appear to be in much of a position to offer up solutions or new regulations to improve the situation at all as he is completely ignorant of what the FAA does or how they do it.  Anyway, here’s the video to watch prior to observing to proposed solution offered by Biden.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebU1XA1BC7Y

Joseph H. Spohn of the Mobile Grey’s of Alabama was spared execution at Goliad because he spoke Spanish, acted as an interpreter and was tending sick or wounded Mexican soldiers.  He was taken prisoner and carried back to Mexico where he eventually escaped with the help of a Mexican officer.  He boarded a ship at Vera Cruz in the Gulf of Mexico and arrived in New York City in the summer of 1836.

Spohn was interviewed by reporters at the New York Evening Star newspaper about his experiences at Goliad down in Texas.

Spohn, who was employed in helping them out, was accosted by a wounded Mexican soldier, on whom he attended, and told to go and ask the commandant for his life, as he might save him, as they were all to be shot. About this time Col. Fannin, who had a room in the church for his use, came out of the church for a particular purpose, when a Mexican captain of the battalion, called Tres Villas, with six soldiers, came up to Spohn, and told him to call Col. Fannin, at the same time pointing to a certain part of the yard, where he wished him to be taken; Spohn asked him if he was going to shoot him, and he cooly replied, –‘Yes.’-When Spohn approached Fannin, the Colonel asked what was that firing, and when he told him the facts he made no observation, but appeared resolute and firm, no visible impression on Colonel Fannin, who firmly walked to the place pointed out by the Mexican captain, placing his arm upon the shoulder of Spohn for support, being wounded in the right thigh, from which he was very lame.

When Colonel Fannin reached the spot required, the N.W. corner of the fort, Spohn was ordered to interpret the following sentence: ‘That for having come with an armed band to commit depredations and revolutionize Texas, the Mexican Government were about to chastise him.’ As soon as the sentence was interpreted to Fannin, he asked if he could not see the commandant. The officer said he could not, and asked why he wished it. Colonel Fannin then pulled forth a valuable gold watch, he said belonged to his wife, and he wished to present it to the commandant.

    and,

The officer standing behind them after seeing their muskets were brought within two feet of his body, drew forth his handkerchief as a signal, when they fired, and poor Fannin fell dead on his right side on the chair, and from thence rolled into a dry ditch, about three feet deep, close by the wall. They then led Spohn near the gate, from which another officer took him, and placed him in the room of Colonel Portia (Portilla), with a sentinel over him. He asked the officer if he was going to shoot him; he replied, ‘no hijo,’ grinning maliciously at the same time.

The reason I popped in was because I heard on the Sat Radio in the truck that the murder trail in SC has been turned over to the Jurors. Have any of y’all been keeping up with it because I haven’t. I’ve seen bits and pieces so I think I know a little about it but I don’t know enough to draw a conclusion as to how this will turn out. I will say that one day last week they put the husband on the stand, something they almost never do and I heard a lot of it in the truck.  It got me interested enough to come home and watch some of it on the TV. My takeaway of this exchange is that the dude is probably guilty BUT if there is a Hung Jury it will be the fault of the IDIOT prosecutor. He came on like a badazz and the defendant just chopped him off at the kneecaps and made him explain what he was saying when he was trying to put words into his mouth. The defendant was a trail attorney so he knew what to say and how to say it. After he wiped the floor with the prosecutor about a dozen time he should have just sat down a went onto other things but he didn’t. He kept poking and prodding and acting tough and I decided he was doing exactly what the defense in the OJ trail did, that is muddying the waters so much with extraneous BS that the jury would be completely confused. I figured that there will be a hung jury with one or two holdouts looking for the “Beyond a reasonable doubt”.  That said I talked to SIL afterwards and he said he’s been watching it pretty closely and he thinks the dude did it but the prosecutor didn’t prove his case and there will be a Not Guilt verdict after a long deliberation.  I don’t know but I do know that there was NO physical evidence just lots of circumstantial evidence and the prosecution was so pitiful that they couldn’t have prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. Just my Dos Peso’s.

MY #45 I didn’t see a lot of the trail but if I was on the jury and I was 95% sure the douche bag did it, I still couldn’t render a guilty verdict if the prosecution couldn’t prove it to me. I asked SIL if he agreed with that and of course he did. I’ll also add the SIL isn’t a lawyer or judge but he studied law at Sam Houston and after graduation became a Probation Officer in Fort Bend County and then got a job with the Feds in Midland about 6 years ago. He does spend some time in the courtroom due to his job.

The Murdauch trial – killer definitely did it.  Family has been running the county for generations, and whatever they want, they just take.  He’s an exceptional trial attorney himself, as well as an admitted drug addict, thief, and liar to everyone whose path he crossed – his family, his business partners, his clients, law enforcement, everyone.  Every time new facts emerged to prove that he was lying, he changed his story to accommodate the new facts.  Fundamentally, he admits that he’s a habitual liar, thief, and has an expensive drug habit – but you can trust him on this, he didn’t’ do it.  Yes, there are holes in the case, but no “reasonable” doubt in my mind.  But lots of women on the jury, he did a good job of making himself out to be a victum on the stand, and at least a couple of them will be feeling sorry for him.  One of the murder weapons was never found, the clothes that he was wearing were never found, etc., so being a good trial lawyer, he knew what to do before talking to LEO’s.  He was unaware of a couple of videos, so he had to change his story on the stand which he did with ease by simply admitting that he is a habitual liar.  The entire family is one of those dynasty types that believe they are the kingpins and can get by with anything while taking whatever they want.  My $.02.  I’ve never seen a more skillful witness/defendant/weasel on the stand who could concoct a believable new lie on the stand without flinching when surprised with new unexpected evidence.  I expect hung jury, but may get a not guilty.  The family has a history of taking out people they don’t like, or in the case of his son, killing a friend in a boating accident and getting off on that.

PS – the murders were so horrific, and the photos were not shown, but the women on that jury will conclude that there is no way such a drug addicted, pathetic functioning father/husband could ever have committed a crime like this. Take that to the bank., Not a one of them will feel sorry for the dead son who got what he deserved by killing his friend in the boat, and his wife who is more or less a non-entity in the family dynasty.

Storm update:  Frontal boundary has already reached the western edge of the county.  I guess if winds are 70 mph, it’s conceivable the storm could be moving that fast.  Anyway, that about 30 miles out, and I’m seeing clouds moving in even as we speak.  This may be a bad one, but it should pass pretty quickly.  Maybe the ranchers will get some run off from it to recharge stock tanks.

The storms rushing toward El Gordo sound to be pretty fierce.  Good thing the planting is yet to be done, and I hope the pots are in a sheltered space.  Ditto for El Gordo.

We shall get more info on the front’s arrival here from the weather guessers on Ch. 11 in two minutes or so.

Front and storm has passed through.  About 1/2″ of rain, high winds, and some very small hail; and as projected, it passed through very quickly.  Power stayed on, no limbs down, and everything looks just fine and appreciative of the moisture.  It is much cooler now than it was before, but no where near freezing or anything like that.  Greenhouse is still standing.  bluebonnets seem to have been knocked down, but I suspect they are tough and will be back.  Blooms are increasing daily and looking very full and nice.  Way more positives than negatives on this one.

Wow, that jury got right down to business.  I figured they would still be trying to pick a foreman.  Guess they don’t have much sympathy for a greedy, drug addicted, lying thief who also happens to be a lawyer,  Apparently the figured out real quick what a fraud he is.

Handyman and I started moving stuff out of the future master bedroom upstairs to prepare for the flooring installation.  I had taken a muscle relaxant, but it didn’t solve the problem though I got a little nap out of it.

I decided to soak in a nice, warm Epsom bath.  Fortunately the master bath has a TV in it so I was able to stay in the tub long enough for everything to get relaxed.  Without the TV, I’d be outta there in about five minutes.  I’m not a natural soaker.

I feel better now, and Latin class starts in a half hour or so.  Watching a Scammer Payback video where Pierogi has invited a lot of anti-scammer folks into his group computer room where they virtually took over a scammer call center and saved a bunch of folks from losing money.

What I love the most are when the whole group cheers after a save call is completed.  Those folks are angels, driven to protect folks from being ripped off.  A lot of those scammer targets are grandmas and grandpas who stand to lose whatever money they have left after working their whole lives.

    Scammers are despicable.

    #65 – That’s my bet.

I went to YT and watched the reading of the verdict and jury poll, etc.  Sentencing is set for tomorrow – I’m very surprised that quickly.  After the formalities, judge remanded perp to the custody of the sheriff, and he was cuffed and as advised by the judge, taken away.  He showed no emotion that I could tell.  Looks like things that have been in place for a couple of generations of them running things around that part of SC are now over.  Lifestyle changes in store for the whole bunch of them.  Probably safe to expect that some of that money that was stolen is stashed away somewhere for emergency use only, but I would not be surprised if someone is not watching to see if any of that stuff that was lost in the boating accidents somehow gets recovered.  For instance, the family owned at least 3 AR-15s including one of the murder weapons, yet all three of them have disappeared.  Would not surprise me if they didn’t turn up somewhere one of these days.  No telling what else they’ve got stashed around the country side.

In spite of his stiff upper lip, I don’t think he was real happy when they put those bracelets on him and the judge, sounding somewhat disgusted, said “take him away.”

Today’s mail brought the winter newsletter edition of my Edgewood High School Of  The Sacred Heart in Madison, WI.  I can keep up at a great distance with what my 1959 senior classmates are up to these days. In this edition was a list of 6 more classmates who died in 2022.  I recall all of them, some better than others.  Some of my dearest friends have passed away in recent years, and we have likely lost about half of the class by now.  Same is true of spouse’s senior class at a different high school. But quite a few of them are still with us, though they are spread around the US and in some cases in other countries.  At least two of my good friends are still with us but far away from Texas so they haven’t been seen for quite a while. I’ll have to hunt for the senior yearbook.

About the trail I wasn’t surprised with the guilty verdict but real surprised with the speed of deliberations, especially with all the evidence put forth. It tells me that the jurors had there minds made up before the defendant took the trial. Then watching his performance they didn’t buy his lawyer like responses. That said I would not have been at all surprised at a hung jury. I’m just glad that justice was served, well if you think life behind bars is justice, I don’t! Bring back the firing squad.

One more thing, the prosecution won the case in spite of their Jack Ass prosecutor so I guess that means that the dude was so bad the jury didn’t have a problem with a conviction.

I have barely followed this South Carolina murder case.

However, tonight I turned on Jesse Watters (sometimes I don’t know why) and there was a NYC defense attorney who completely nailed the deal, Brooklyn accent and all.

He said Murdaugh took the stand and entered into combat with the prosecutor.  The average media types were all dazzled with his technical hocus-pocus.  Everybody thought he slayed the DA.

Wrong.  They were not looking at the jury box and the bench.

What the jury saw was a man with no soul, no sadness, no grief, no feelings whatsoever about his dead wife, dead son, the debts, the dope, the injured devastated business partners, wiped out clients and the family of the longtime housekeeper ripped off for millions.

The judge saw it.  The jury saw it.  They knew and it was over real quick.

  80. El Gordo Avatar

Story that I got was the the juror who got kicked off was the one they had paid to hang it up.  That’s why they objected to her dismissal.  Of course, she could not keep her mouth shut, and that tanked the deal for the perp.

The story on Fox tonight was there were two alternate jurors and at the last minute the judge excused one of them.  Apparently, he had been tipped off about her and took the chance of having only one spare juror in case something went haywire right before the jury went off to deliberate.

  83. El Gordo Avatar

TP – I watched that part where the judge explained as well as he could what all took place with that juror.  According to the judge, they conducted a complete investigation with several witnesses and even though the juror herself lied to the judge and told him she had spoken with no one, there was phone recording evidence to the contrary.  I kind of surprised he did not charge her with something, but I don’t know where they go on something like that.  Could result in mistrial I suppose.  Defense objected to her removal and replacement.

  84. El Gordo Avatar

The judge wanted to excuse the other unused alternate juror but the defense wanted to keep her around in case one of the deliberating jurors could not complete the assignment.  I’m sure they had a plan to get to her and then try to get her installed on the jury, but the deliberations did not go on long enough, and the judge had her locked away from any contact with either the deliberating jury or the defense team.

The Murdaughs are not used to losing and always get whatever they want.  We haven’t heard the last of them yet as their empire is being dismantled.  I think the total death count with girlfriends, gay lovers, housekeepers, wife, son, and such is around 5 total that they have taken out over the years.  Finally got to the end of the rope.

The assets, the 1,700 acre plantation – and whatever else might be left – will disappear into a vapor once the old law partners, their screwed clients, the housekeepers’ family lawyers, the defense attorneys and the IRS get through with it all.

Oh, and you still have the family of the dead teenage girl killed by the older son in the boating crash.

They are going to have to find a much larger venue than the old Courthouse for the preliminary hearings for all the civil plaintiffs.
