16-Year-Old Collapses and Dies After Complaining About ‘Chest Problems’

A 16-year-old student died during a flag football game in Las Vegas.

Ashari Hughes said she was experiencing “chest problems” during the game and went to the sideline before she collapsed.

Hughes was a sophomore at Desert Oasis High School and her school was playing against Valley High School.

She collapsed at around 7:30 p.m. and was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the official cause of Hughes’ death.

It’s speculated that the cause of death is due to cardiovascular problems.

It’s unclear what caused chest problems for a young, healthy student. A doctor had cleared her to play in athletic competition, her family noted.

Fox 26 is reporting that “the person who took down the robber in the viral video is ready to tell his side of the story – stay tuned”…. OK – his lawyer has reached out to the PD and said he’s ready to tell them what happened… but arrangements have not been made yet… And Lovey is out – no surprise there

    COLLAPSING STUFF ☙ Monday, January 9, 2023 ☙ C&C NEWS

Good Monday morning, C&C! Welcome to the second week of the new year. Your roundup today includes: Another U.S. player dramatically collapses live, on air, during play; prodigal atom weight MMA fighter throws her last punch; former NBA star SADSly loses his mother; Canadian TV reporter has an on-air senior moment; Reuters sheds a tear for China’s zero-covid policy; new House committee will have power to hear about “ongoing criminal investigations;” Capitol Police crack down on jaywalkers; the tech implosion continues; and the CDC provides a handy party-planning checklist.

    The roundup looks good.

Along the lines of “suddenly and unexpectedly” or “Sudden Adult Death Syndrome”:

Old Dominion University sophomore guard Imo Essien stumbled and then collapsed on the basketball court, clutching his chest, during the first half of Saturday’s game against Georgia Southern. He wasn’t tackled though. He was just standing there.

He was a lucky one, and fell only into the S&E bucket.  He recovered, walked off the court, and rode home with his teammates and an appointment with a cardiologist.  Prayers that the problem is found and he has a full recovery.

But then, Old Dominion requires that all students be ‘fully’ vaccinated, so there’s that….

But not so lucky is the cute Hawaiian girl:

Hawaiian MMA rising star and atomweight title holder Victoria Lee, 18, was KO’d by the Grim Reaper the day after Christmas, when the young athlete died suddenly and unexpectedly.

She was a rising star in MMA.  Way too young.  RIP.

Also on the SADS list: Mother of former Chicago Bulls player Andrea Thompson, at home of a heart attack and could not be resusciated.

And then there’s this video. You can see the reporter about to fall down just as they cameras are cutting off:
    https://video.twimg.com/ext_tw_video/1612270780867350531/pu/vid/492×270/hZr4Bgz35z5v5pgq.mp4?tag=12

Prayers for all being affected by this terrible shot disease health issue.

Childers reports that China has abandoned its zero Covid policy and is throwing open its borders in an attempt to gain herd immunity.

Because welding your citizens inside their apartments and “feeding” them like caged hamsters turned out so well.

Then there’s the media side of things:

Corporate media’s reaction is totally hilarious. Reuters breathlessly reported the W.H.O. accused China of under-reporting covid cases and hospitalizations! Reuters reported that with a straight face. Oh, PLEASE.

For the last three years, Reuters, the W.H.O., and every other corporate media pretender credulously slurped up all the ridiculous data China was pushing. Sometimes media would comment something like, “accurate numbers are hard to obtain from the communist superpower,” but they never ever dismissed China’s figures outright.

    /snip

In fact, China’s rock-bottom covid figures were cited by insane Western public health experts to “prove” that the U.S. “never really tried lockdowns.”….

But NOW, now that China — still reporting the SAME low covid infections — is pursuing a different covid strategy, a strategy they don’t like, NOW corporate media tells us China is lying about the numbers.

I agree with Childers’ response:  Shut up.  Just shut the wiss up.

We are on to you corporate media clowns. You lie about covid numbers worse than China. I say this as a lawyer who has personally audited hundreds of covid death records. You’re not credible. We’re not listening to you anymore.

As if we here ever were listening.

Morning gang.  Slept in a little late this morning, got up and got dressed for TOK.  Went to TOK but discovered that I had forgotten that they started closing on Mondays, so returned home and started my coffee.  Trying to make my way through some of my regular internet haunts, but apparently not much going on today.  My glasses are supposed to arrive today, so I’m looking forward to getting them and starting to adapt to using them for reading and such.  Maybe my level of eye strain will be reduced.  Should also get a little more networking gear in today to complete my overkill one mesh network.  I’ve been able to get my internet network really beefed up with no dead spots inside and virtually all of the yard covered with a usable signal, add three of those Amazon snooping Echo devices, and make my outside lights as well as strategic inside lights smart.  Surprisingly, it’s all been done on the cheap, with refurb routers and extenders, and holiday discounts on lights, speakers, switches, and plugs.  In fact, I got some of everything left over, and while all my overhead lights and such are not smart, I have not found a need for them just yet.  I’m sure I’ll use them up sooner or later.

I’ve still got to replace the heater/AC in the kitchen, and I’m still thinking a mini-split unit is the ticket for that.  Most of them come with smart thermostat and controls, and I’m also considering a smart thermostat for the other heating and cooling unit for the rest of the house.  It’s time to get my act together on those issues now too.  And don’t forget, it’s that time of the year where taxes are due, so don’t forget because the penalties are outrageous.

OK, I hope that you all have a great day.  Looking pretty nice out here so far, with bright sunshine yet again.  More later.

Part of the Speaker negotiations included :

A proposed subcommittee to investigate “weaponization” of the federal government — a key demand of “chaos caucus” conservatives who delivered the gavel to Speaker Kevin McCarthy — will be given sweeping investigatory powers including explicit authority to review “ongoing criminal investigations.”

This is significant, because “ongoing criminal investigation” is the excuse that law enforcement agencies always use to refuse to answer otherwise legitimate questions. The authorization would allow House representatives to brush that excuse aside. In other words, fine, let’s hear about the ongoing investigations.

My guess is they’ll hear that lame excuse a LOT less.

The new committee will be organized similar to the January 6th Committee. …

Will McCarthy be Pelosi lite?  Will he hand pick the members or attempt to hog tie the investigations?

You can be the Dems are already planning to use the rules to their advantage.  Because…Alinsky.

Childers reports on the tech industry:

The Tech sector is collapsing. Last week, Business Insider ran a story headlined, “Amazon and Compass Are Slashing Thousands of Workers, as a Wave of Layoffs Continues Into 2023.” Uh oh.

In a memo to employees, Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy announced a lay off of 18,000 workers, explaining it was due to “the uncertain economy.”… the layoff is the largest in Amazon’s history….

On January 3rd, the Wall Street Journal ran a related story … reported that collectively, employers in the struggling tech sector cut more than 150,000 jobs in 2022.

There are two ameliorating factors. First, the tech industry grew quickly during the pandemic, when demand for at-home services skyrocketed. But now … a natural correction is occurring. Second, tech went all-in for DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) over the last few year, mushrooming payrolls with goofy social justice professionals.

Tech employers may have overshot the mark. A ‘DEI hangover’ of some kind appears to be emerging, as pandemic profits dry up, making DEI departments an easy target for payroll savings.

I guess the Tech folks aren’t so special anymore.  Reality bites.

    RE: Big Tech Layoffs

There was a good article a while back divulging the real sentiments of Silicon Valley management and that was they were rooting for Elon Musk to be successful in cleaning house of all the excess DIE baggage.  They wanted him to go first and take the heat.  Big Tech has moved from the lean, mean, cutting edge startup mentality to fat, lazy and territorially protective.  They have also created this hive mentality ruled by their own thought police.  The titans of Silicon Valley have designed their own hellscape and now don’t know how to get out of it.

Another factor having serious effect is the dramatic financial collapse of online advertising.  Online ad revenue to various websites across the non-social media internet have fallen  as much as 75%.  The majority of ad dollars are going to Amazon, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat, Spotify, TikTok, Pinterest and YouTube.  Companies and ad agencies finally came to the conclusion running sidebar ads across thousands or millions of regular websites was not cost effective at the prevailing rates.

Several websites I frequent regularly have said their ad income is down more than 50% to 75% because advertisers aren’t willing to pay what they used to pay.  It’s why you have seen more ads and more intrusive ads on websites over the past year, especially the full screen blocking ads I find so irritating.  The shift to subscriber models or VIP type plans for websites is simply an attempt to survive in this environment.

Off we go starting another week in the dead of winter, as the scenery around here is a bit more blah.  Some green spots are no longer green, just boring tan.  And now that the red oaks have shed their leaves most of the trees really look skeletal.  Live oaks to the rescue even though they aren’t bright green anymore.

    From OTL:

Frontier icon Crockett loses election, heads for Alamo
    January 09,1836

On this day in 1836, after losing his bid for a fourth term as a Tennessee representative to the U. S. Congress, Davy Crockett wrote a letter stating his intention to go to Texas. This, his last extant letter, praises Texas as “the garden spot of the world,” with the “best land and the best prospects for health I ever saw.” With high optimism for his political future, he wrote that he fully expected to take part in writing a constitution for Texas. “I am in hopes,” he wrote, “of making a fortune yet for my self and my family, bad as my prospect has been.” Crockett could not foresee his fate at the battle of the Alamo, which occurred just two months later.

I’m going exploring on the net to see if I can reuse my dianthus from last year to come up again this year.  I just don’t know much about them except they were very pretty this year and I’d like to bring them back again and maybe put some of them in the ground instead of just having them in the pots.

    The “Dontells”

Andy Kessler is a former hedge fund manager who writes these days about finance and the economy.  Glenn Reynolds has quoted a big chunk of his new column for the WSJ that is behind their paywall:

Meet the Dontells, sure to be a political force in the next few elections. Their mantra is simple: Don’t tell me what to do, hence the name. Their telltale sign is an obvious case of ODD. What’s that? Oppositional defiant disorder, which, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, is a behavior disorder, often in children who “are uncooperative, defiant, and hostile toward peers, parents, teachers, and other authority figures.” Yeah, I’ve got that.

Also add: Don’t tell me what to say, to think, to pay. Backlash was inevitable against the metastatic absurdity. Use only paper straws. Don’t tell me what to do. You can’t say “master bedroom” anymore. Oh yes I can. That 6-foot-tall dude winning all the NCAA women’s swimming meets is really a woman. I don’t think so. Every threat is existential. Maybe to you. No abortions ever. What? Your taxes pay people not to work. Make it stop!

    and this,

Amazingly, the whole Dontell thing still comes as a huge surprise to self-important city dwellers on both coasts. Yes, most big-city progressives like to be dominated and enjoy being told what to do. Walk/Don’t Walk. Mind the gap. Wait in long lines. Alternate-side-of-the-street parking regulations. Calorie counts in doughnut shops. Confiscatory taxes. New York’s (unconstitutional) ban on large sodas. San Francisco’s ban on Happy Meals. The seemingly mandatory use of words such as “positionality” and “performative” in conversation.

Bongino is talking about (bashing) E. P. McCain but saying that we scored a victory in the Sepaker fight.  EPMc was to be Chair of a powerful committee, but with the combination of McCarty having to make a concession to the rebels, coupled with EPMc stepping on his duck by calling them terrorists, he lost his shot at the Chairmanship.  If true, this really is a win for us.

  37. El Gordo Avatar

The more I think about it, the more I think the hold out group really did a great service to America, to conservatives, and maybe even to themselves.  They forced McCarthy to make some serious concessions, forced him to reduce to writing some of his promises, and opened the door to a relatively easy removal process should he go too far astray – which we all know that he will try to do.  He represents the lobbyests in DC, not the Rep, not the voters, not the constitution, and everybody knows that; but by reining him in, he cannot do that much damage.  And as a side benefit, we did make some progress into having our voices heard rather than just being shuffled off to the back bench and ignored.  It’s not a perfect situation, but we did not have an alternative to offer, and I think we came out pretty good considering what we had to work with.

    This is all so stupid.

Henig finished as an all-American at the NCAA championships and proved to be a force in the 50 freestyle.

Now a member of the men’s team, Henig struggled to a 79th finish out of 83 swimmers at an Ohio State meet in November but says in a New York Times opinion piece that it’s all good.

“Now I’m a senior, swimming with the men. I’ve been taking hormones for almost eight months; my times are about the same as they were at the end of last season,” Henig writes.

“Right before Thanksgiving we finished a meet against Ohio State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and others. I wasn’t the slowest guy in any of my events, but I’m not as successful in the sport as I was on the women’s team.

Imagine that — a woman eight months into transitioning into a dude finishes 79th out of 83 swimmers.

    Attention El Gordo

David Solway is a writer, scholar and poet.  Here he writes about Football and Feminism.

Since football is a man’s game, I wonder what a woman referee is doing on the field. Must I endure female intra-and-post-game interviewers who have little idea what the game entails and trade mainly in inanities? Or female commentators who have never played the game expounding on its involutions beside former players and coaches sitting on the same panel — those who know firsthand and from experience what they are talking about? Having spent some time back in the day on my varsity practice squad as a free safety, I know how difficult it is to execute a proper tackle on a six-foot-four tight end hurtling toward you without breaking your neck in the process. I know when to cover zone or play the man, to join the quarterback rush, or to fake it and drop back. I recognize when the coach is calling a bonehead play. I can appreciate what is happening on the field. Most men do. And they are the ones I want to listen to when the progress of a game is being described, discussed, and analyzed.

The men, we might note, are always chivalrous and amiable to a fault in their comportment, but eye candy belongs elsewhere. It’s rather a jarring spectacle, the men formal in jackets and ties, the women often looking as if they’re about to go out on the town. What is a young woman wearing a bright pink, form-fitting, slant-décolleté pantsuit doing on a football panel? Carrie Underwood’s dynamite performance introducing Sunday Night Football represents the extent of my appreciation for the female contribution in this context.

    This happened this morning.

A letter signed by more than 1,000 Texans was sent to Gov. Greg Abbott, asking him to declare the sexualization of children an emergency. Texas Scorecard obtained a copy of the letter, which was emailed to the governor this morning.

The effort was organized by Bonnie Wallace of Llano County. In an email to the governor, she explained her interest in the issue on finding “pornography, sexually explicit and pervasively vulgar content directed at children” in her local library.

The letter is signed by 1,177 activists from around the state who have been fighting the porn battle in their local libraries.

“Legislative solutions that eliminate this material in every library in Texas are needed, as local policy is failing to address the problem, and the state has a compelling interest to intervene and protect Texas children,” wrote the signers. “Ultimately the responsibility will fall on the legislature. But if you designate this issue as an Emergency Item, it then has the ability to move more quickly through the process. The clock is ticking and every day matters.”

Under the constitutionally defined rules of the legislative process, legislation cannot be considered on the floor of either chamber unless it has been designated an emergency by the governor.

The governor’s office did not respond to a request for comment on the letter at the time of publication. The article will be updated when a comment is received.

  43. El Gordo Avatar

#38 – I’ve got to agree with most of what he says.  The female announcers are over there screaming like they have some idea of what is really going on when in truth they don’t have a clue.  Now I agree there are plenty of men who never played the sport either but who spent time to learn all the ends and outs, and who also have a gift of gab and the ability to master the English language who do a good job.  Sports is more than just the Xs and Os, and Howard Cossell used to bring in the bigger picture and create the atmosphere.  But I’ve pretty well learned to tune out the jerks.  Generally I just don’t pay any attention and just turn the sound down and watch; but if there is a female announcer, I just go to a different game even if it was something I was wanting to watch.

Southwest Airlines Pilot Association’s VP, Captain Tom Nekouei, takes the Southwest Airlines bureaucracy to the woodshed in this open letter.

Rather than keeping the organization flat and lean with minimum distance between the nerve center of the organization and its executing appendages as Herb had originally designed, he added layer upon layer of bureaucratic fat, staffed by corporate automatons whose defining skills are sheltering the boss from bad news from below and never disagreeing with him. In his two decades at the helm, Gary Kelly managed to build an organization of yes-men and yes-women around him and promoted within that organization, based on agreeability rather than competence. As Pilots, we need look no further than the string of milquetoast headquarters “leadership” we have been subjected to within our own operations stovepipe in the Company. Additionally, one need only look at last week’s viral memo from the SWA VP of Ground Ops to his workers in Denver to see how far Gary Kelly allowed this Company to deviate from the culture and principles that Herb cultivated. Despite negatively impacting our Denver operation in a concrete manner and humiliating SWA on a national level, this VP remains in his position and will likely do so indicating the tacit approval for his “leadership” style by SWA executives. If nothing else, the world now knows that SWA management embraces the words of Herb’s legacy for public relations purposes only while having completely abandoned them in deeds. Image versus reality.

With the above changes instituted by Gary Kelly came the proliferation of single-points-of-failure within our Company’s individual stovepipes, and at the top of that operational stovepipe as Chief Operations Officer, Gary Kelly installed another accountant and friend, Mike Van de Ven. And just like that, we were suddenly an operational flying and customer service company with the top three positions occupied by three holders of bachelor’s degrees in accounting from the University of Texas. A recipe for operational ignorance and collective groupthink. A monetization of the once vaunted Southwest culture and instead turning it into a headquarters-centric cult. A good old boys and girls network indeed. While this would temporarily bode well for our shareholders for the last decade, it slowly eroded our Company from within to set the stage for our current and complete meltdown.

Thanks for the advice on learning to use the bi’s.  Our good friend and aviation consultant Juan Browne at blancolirio takes a little spin around the area where it has been raining quite a bit, following a terrible drought that almost emptied Lake Oroville.  I enjoyed the photography and also the absence of commentary.  Enjoy if you like – some stuffing stuff.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tt5ifQVJDE

PS I got the cheap ones with the visible lines. The word progressive tends to scare me away. I got the cheapest that I could find figuring that I’ll be back with another order fairly soon once I get things figured out as to how they work and how I’ll use them

I started out with progressive tri-focals and never had a problem.

At one point along the way, I thought I had a problem with them, but we discovered that I had, out-of-the blue, developed a little astigmatism. That was easily corrected with the next set of lenses.

    Re: progressive versus lines

Working outdoors in the sun….just the thought of having some damn lines in front of my eyeballs that might increase any kind of glare was an absolute NO WAY for me.

  57. bsue54 Avatar

My problem was that I started wearing contact lenses in my early 20’s… Got new ones shortly after my 40th birthday – and went back for follow up “Doc – these are weird… Everything over there is crystal clear, then I look at something up close and it’s blurry but clears up, then everything other there is blurry” He laughed and said “when did you turn 40???” I looked at him and said “how did you know???” Because that is something that happens to 40 year old eyeballs – it’s called a focusing mechanism disorder and it usually kicks in right about 40…” so I wound up with reading glasses…

Finally went back to regular prescription glasses – and now get to have trifocals – distance, computer or speedometer distance and up close all in one handy pair of glasses with anti-glare lenses.. and prescription sunglasses for driving

  58. Shannon Avatar
    Shannon

I fought the contacts for a few years, perhaps ten, total. Hard ones. And then the soft ones were an exponential improvement, but still….

Again, working outdoors in windy and dusty conditions, dirty hands/fingers. etc. was all a contact lens nightmare. And the ten years I was a welder, they just weren’t an option.

  59. bsue54 Avatar

My downfall was 18 hour shifts on the ambulance – my eyeballs didn’t like having the contacts in that long.

  60. El Gordo Avatar

My similar experience – I went to Optometrist at about 45 and when she ask me how old I was I told her.  She sais well, you should have been here 5 years ago.  Been using readers ever since – adding power every few years.  Now up to +2.5, but the cataract replacement lenses have opened up the light, so I need good glasses to take advantage of it.  The new ones seem very strong to me, but I’ll get used to that I’m sure.

Time for me to get serious about the football game tonight in just about an hour.  Roll Toad.  I imagine the bigger, stronger guys will win in the end, but I thought that against Michigan too.  I’ll probably make it until half time and then turn on the radio if I can find it.  We’ll see how it goes.

I had an eye doctor call it “42-18 syndrome”.  Turn 42 and start holding everything 18 inches away.

It looks like I get to do the insurance dance.  They’re refusing to pay for my treatments.  I had surgery on the 16th, and insurance changed on the 1st.  We had to change as our provider was pulling out of this area.

    I was afraid of this.

Sometimes you can get live ESPN through this site:

    https://www.espnplayer.com/home

The CATCH is you need a VPN and have it set for somewhere anywhere in Europe.  It is a pay site BUT they sometimes drop the paywall.

We had a family of toads living under our house for a while.  At first I thought the movement was a snake, but was relieved to know that the little burrow next to where I had to stand for my water hose was populated by toads instead.

It’s really sad when the commentators start discussing the architecture of the stadium because there’s nothing to talk about unless Georgia has the ball

  88. El Gordo Avatar

Well, I drank a couple cups of coffee and the game looks like it’s getting out of hand sort of early.  I don’t like driving after dark, but I’m only a few blocks from home.  Georgia is doing whatever they want, which is not unexpected but still somewhat disappointing.  Oh well, I’d rather be back here and home waiting to talk to GF when she calls just before her bedtime.  TOK will be back open tomorrow, and the world will be in balance again.

  89. El Gordo Avatar

FWIW, if you are looking for a radio stream, I’m getting it on WBAP on the internet.  Just tell Alexa to play WBAP 820 AM.
These new biffocals are giving me fits. I’ll figure it out sooner or later, but it’s certainly not what I’m used to. Don’t need to see to listen or to type though.

It’s not looking good for TCU, the Dawgs are really good this year. I was hoping that maybe TCU could pull it off but if they do something will have to change. The network showed the last time Georgia and TCU played in a bowl game and it was the Orange Bowl 1942. Georgia won 40 – 26.
