Wow, where is everybody this morning? I’m on my first cup of coffee and headed for the showers as soon as I get it down. At long last, the TOK should be open again following the long weekend, so I’ll head out there in a bit. I’m still somewhat distressed by the young man who had a heart attack on the playing field last night. Some times these heart defects can be difficult to detect, but for now, the convenience of blaming the COVID vaccine seems to be good enough – who needs medical research when we have go to causes like that readily available. I had a high school classmate, cute little girl, who had a heart attack and died wen se was 18 due to undiagnosed, rare condition. Wasn’t any vaccine back then. But who knows.
Not certain what the remainder of the day holds, but guess I’ll find out soon enough. You all have a great day now. More later as it develops.

I’m here El Gordo, been goofing around although I did get up a little late. Working on my first cup of coffee.

It was too good to pass up.
Yup, I’ll say.

Abuck, sorry for your loss of your dad. You knew it was coming but it’s always tough. When my dad was dieing of cancer I went to see every few weeks in the last 3 months. I’d leave Clear Lake after work on Friday to arrive around 2 AM Saturday, visit and leave before day on Monday. I consider myself fortunate that I spoke with him the morning he passed away. He told me to be careful going home, then about 6 AM I got in my truck and headed west, my sister came over and fixed him breakfast about 7:30 then the Hospice folks showed up and he told them he was in pain so they sent for some powerful drugs and while waiting he just went to sleep at about 9 AM. Sister called my wife and she notified the Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas State Troopers to be on the look-out for me on I 10 to turn me around but that didn’t happen. I drove up to our house and my wife and daughter were sitting in the swing crying so I knew he’d passed. SO we loaded up the big blue van and headed back to Alabama, arriving in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

I nursed MIL through her last week or so. Moved into her house so I could tend to her. She passed away in the evening. When I tried to call Hubby and his brother, neither one answered. Hubby had fallen asleep early, as usual, since he’s up and down during the night from back pain. BIL had allowed his battery to run down.
Handsome got the call and came to say good-bye to his grandmother, then helped me load my stuff in my car so I could go home after the funeral home people were done. I was exhausted and just wanted to crawl into my bed and sleep, so I did.
Hubby said he saw my car in the driveway and knew the news wasn’t good. That was how he found out.

El Gordo, prayers for your childhood friend and Rice Alum. Just do the best you can and don’t worry too much about any negative feedback you may get. As they say, getting old is not for the squeamish a lot of things come our way that we’d have never considered just a few years ago.

The brilliant scholar/philosopher/theologian Robert P. George of Princeton on Twitter:
Ostensibly secular universities are actually deeply religious–their lives as punctuated and regulated by liturgies and rituals as any monastery. There’s the land acknowledgment liturgy, the diversity statement ritual, the pronouns ritual. We have saints, demons, even holy months

A Buck: Sorry to learn of the passing of your father. May your grief be brief and your recovery be complete.

Good call, cause you know that will be the answer. I just we could still have the confidence to believe them.

Funny, the jab never crossed my mind in this case. The guy took a hit to the chest.
Not everything is COVID. Sometimes it’s other stuff.
Now is the time to pray for healing, and leave the other crap to the side.

We’ll be leaving soon for the doctor appointment. I’m sure he’s going to be thrilled to hear about my leap from the couch (my real couch, not the Big Comfy Couch) when I experienced a sudden, very painful foot cramp last night.
Didn’t do my back any good, I can tell you that.
-
#10 Tedtam – tis OK that it never crossed your mind because it was the first thing that crossed mine… however, I wasn’t watching the game, and didn’t know that he’d gotten hit in the chest… Prayers for good report from your Dr

Before I leave, though:
TOMATO POPSICLES ☙ Tuesday, January 3, 2023 ☙ C&C NEWS
Good morning and Happy Tuesday, C&C! Today’s roundup includes: dramatic on-screen live heart attack jars players, fans, and commenters, and interrupts NFL game; tennis star develops double cancer; former linebacker’s heart tackled; vaccine study reviewing Pfizer and Moderna’s data finds jabs neither safe nor effective; new poll shows half of Americans believe the jabs are causing sudden and unexplained deaths; and an indescribable story that you might just want to skip over. You were warned! And, I’m sorry, but if I had to see it, you do too.
I don’t have time to break it down for you, since I’ll be leaving in a matter of minutes. But here is the roundup for you.
BTW – I heard Chris Salcedo use a Dr. Malone audio clip where he calls for the jab to be discontinued because of the damage it causes. Here’s hoping that other doctors will become brave and the swell of information begins to drown the tyrannical voices still trying to force the jab on folks.

I’ve been too embarrassed to mention it but we’ve been having leaks on our new porch.
You may remember, we had to fire the original contractor. Eight weeks in we were getting continual no shows, not answering calls or texts, one excuse after another. It was about 3/4’s done, we hired a handyman to complete most of it and I’ve been doing some of it. We still have to do some final prep and get it painted, it’s had Christmas decorations and lights so work has been held up till now.
We started seeing leaks and have been chasing them, turns out they did not put a starter row on the shingles and ridge shingles were not installed properly. $362. A few days ago we still had one over the landing area, had the roofer come back, had to remove one of the ceiling panels to see where it was coming from. There is a valley on the house roof, they did not join the porch shingles properly into that valley, we could see daylight in one tiny spot, repaired that and wait. Don’t have a bill on that yet, probably his minimum, $200. Rained during the night, still leaking. Appears we are going to have to redo that whole valley area, waiting on a quote for that. Bastards. Money pit.
-
Not expecting any response, wouldn’t want the guy back here anyway but sent him pictures of the leaks asking WTF? Comes back with you didn’t let me finish, you screwed me out of $5K. For an unfinished job? The roof was done, you knew it was jacked up? You didn’t let me finish, blah, blah, blah.

You know I’ve been struggling with my morning coffee over these last few months. To the point where I’ve simply blown it off and not made any on most days.
At one point I decided to cuss and blame Folgers. So I bought some Community coffee and it was little improvement.
I’ve even tried to justify a possible Costco membership and the drive to Katy to buy the stuff Texpat uses.
We’ve started these insane 8am Tuesday weekly rehearsals and I really need some coffee to help prep my voice.
I got up at 5 this morning determined to settle this once and for all. I used no less than twice the amount (maybe more) of coffee than I’ve been using for years. Damn, that was one fine pot of coffee.
He’s not here, so I’m blaming five days of drinking Texpat’s strong morning brew, back around Halloween in New Jersey.

I really have a serious hostility for lazy, incompetent contractors. The misery they cause people is so unnecessary. The industry has way too many morons who don’t know and don’t bother how to do many tasks and are seemingly too stupid to do simple internet searches to learn how to do things. There are many videos out there about how to do all kinds of roofing procedures. There’s no excuse for dumb mistakes.
-
Our luck contractors is hit and miss, gets under my skin to have to hire out work. In 1999 we built a house, we couldn’t have been happier, built amazingly quick and loved the builder. Few years later, put a pool in, quick and painless, loved it. Moved out here in 2016, had master bath remodeled, money pit. Now the porch. Overall happy with the looks and (hopefully!) structure but it was and is a disaster money wise, I have every receipt filed, I refuse to tally it up, lol. Live and learn.
-
Never learned anything about roofing, I knew about having a starter row but did not notice they did not put one down. Doing it myself is not an option anymore.

I can’t believe your singing colleagues put up with your anti-social morning behavior. Didn’t you warn them ?
Fay and I always agreed it was best not to talk to Shannon before 10 AM.
Anyway, this:

My son-in-law gave me this newly released book recently:
Lies My Government Told Me by Dr. Robert Malone
I have to go in for a two hour infusion treatment tomorrow and I’m looking forward to starting it then.
-
#16 Shannon – we had been struggling to find something we both liked – found Community Dark and Bold at Sam’s (and now sometimes at Kroger) and it’s really nice stuff. Had used Community regular before but got where the “chocolate undertones” were no longer “undertones” – tried the Dark and Bold and love it… only problem is that it’s sometimes hard to find.
-
Still use the old Folgers Classic blend, we just make it real strong and love it.
-
BSue, another issue is that I try to limit my caffeine intake by drinking half-caff, because of my formerly serious arrhythmia issues.
Doubling the amount of coffee used might just be defeating that, now. 🙂
Since my cardiac ablation procedure finally decided to work, I haven’t had any problems in a number of years.
Maybe I can get away with it.
-
#21 Shannon – I understand. I just looked and it doesn’t appear that they have a decaf version but it did remind me that the Dark and Bold we like is “Espresso Roast” – haven’t tried the “Intense” one.

A rather confusing headline

From what I read recently, the milder roasts have more caffeine.
I always thought it was the other way around.

Alpine ski resorts have been plunged into crisis after half the slopes in France closed due to a winter heatwave in Europe.
The unprecedented January ‘heat dome’ has produced temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 Celsius (50 to 68 Fahrenheit) from France to Western Russia – with several temperature records broken over the New Year weekend.
At least seven countries – including Denmark, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic – have seen their warmest January weather on record, while the Swiss resort of Adelboden recorded temperatures above freezing even at 6,500ft.
Frustrated skiers have posted videos slaloming down narrow slivers of ice flanked by grass and sharing their annoyance over the lack of snow on the slopes.
Oh, boo hoo.
These Euros are always whining about something. Their nations are crumbling around them, the immigrant crime has made their cities unlivable and they’ve let a bunch of weasel bureaucrats in Belgium turn the continent into an Orwellian nightmare, but they’re crying about no snow.
They should be happy they aren’t freezing to death in their homes for lack of heating supply this winter.

I’d be perfectly happy to turn all the university campuses into lush green parks after we demolish all the buildings.
A professor at New York’s Stony Brook University is coming under fire for branding two Suffolk County police officers as ‘murderers’ after they shot and killed a man who had stabbed them while they responding to a call.
Professor Anna Hayward who teaches at Stony Brook’s School of Social Welfare questioned in an Instagram post why the situation could not have been de-escalated and why the man had to die.
The Suffolk County officers had been called to investigate reports of the man threatening his roommate with a fire extinguisher when the suspect suddenly turned his knife on the officers.
Three police officers were hurt, two seriously, with one suffering life-threatening neck wounds.

Off to get my ears lowered but when I get back I’ll relate the story about my $6.6K tin roof disaster that I had totally redone for $17K!! Yes the tin tripled in price over the years but I think I still paid about $3K more than the going rate just to get the best roofer in the area. Also I’m glad I did it since it’ll outlast me.

Morning, gang. Today’s forecast is fab for getting my errands run. I do believe this is my first outing since my visit to the orthopedic doc, when I got his reassuring explanation about my painful right leg. I think I will take my cane in with me at Kroger, just in case my gait goes wonky while I’m there. Frankly, I am amazed that it is even possible for a torn muscle to repair itself at all.

You are correct. The extra roasting degrades some of the caffeine.
16 shannon
There’s always online ordering. Take a look at javacoffee.com . They’re at the corner of Westheimer and Fondren and do mail order. They do their own roasting.
Or… you could just check out the coffee aisle of your friendly H‑E‑B.

Today’s Hamousonian
LDS guy, Catholic guy, Baptist guy episode:
Yesterday at work we had a priest from St. Leo’s come in and bless the school. Students and teachers were invited to participate if they desired. The priest read a prayer and tossed holy water on our heads. It was nice. The priest read a prayer and tossed holy water on our heads.
Muwahahaha! Payback. He just baptized you! You’re Catholic now
Hamous #5;
I don’t recall accepting it.Before I sign off for now and head away from my newfound fellow Catholic patrons (can I have a beer now that I’m Catholic?)can I have a beer now that I’m Catholic?
Reminds me of an old joke:
Each Friday night after work, Bubba would fire up his outdoor grill and cook a venison steak. But, all of Bubba’s neighbors were Catholic…. And since it was Lent, they were forbidden from eating meat on Friday.
The delicious aroma from the grilled venison steaks was causing such a problem for the Catholic faithful that they finally talked to their priest.
The Priest came to visit Bubba, and suggested that he become a Catholic. After several classes and much study, Bubba attended Mass….. and as the priest sprinkled holy water over him, he said, “You were born a Baptist, and raised a Baptist, but now you are a Catholic.
“Bubba’s neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday night arrived, and the wonderful aroma of grilled venison filled the neighborhood. The Priest was called immediately by the neighbors, and, as he rushed into Bubba’s yard, clutching a rosary and prepared to scold him, he stopped and watched in amazement.
There stood Bubba, clutching a small bottle of holy water which he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meat and chanted: “You wuz born a deer, you wuz raised a deer, but now you is a catfish.”
-
Nice Catholic joke. We do like to poke fun at ourselves:
A Catholic man collapsed on a New York street, and a crowd gathered round. A beat cop arrived and upon discovering the man’s religion, called out for a priest.
An elderly Jewish man stepped forward. “I’m not Catholic, but my bedroom window is right next to St. Mary’s church. I hear everything. I may be able to help.”
Since the victim was in extremis, the cop allowed the Jew to assist. The Jew leaned over the dying man, and in serious, low tones, began to recite: “B-9, N-33…”

The talk about close relatives passing reminded me of my FiL.
Around Halloween one year, Yellow Hair’s great aunt was in the hospital and wasn’t doing well. He and She Devil called YH as they left to go visit her one morning. Shortly after, YH decides to go visit as well.
We head out and on the way pick up a cute little bouquet with balloons. We get there and FiL was out in a lobby area. He looked up, saw YH with the flowers and told her: “You won’t need those, she didn’t make it.”
I really miss that man.

Just returned from the doctor’s office. The nurse practitioner and I had a nice discussion of my pain, lack of medication, etc. She took copious notes and called in for more meds for me, including a steroid pack in case I have the serious breakthrough pain that had me leaving a tearful message for them last week. She said Tylenol is okay to take, so at least I got that part right.
I am now the owner of a bone growth stimulator, a very sexy /sarc off/ belty type thing that I get to wear for 2 hours a day for nine months now. I’m assuming that I give birth to something after all that, but we shall see.
I am cleared to drive, as long as I’m not loopy from meds. /duh/ I plan on wearing my back brace to reduce twisting and bending while in the car. I thought I was supposed to avoid that for the first few weeks. Nope, the first SIX weeks. Oops. Guess I need to go high vigilance again. You don’t realize how much bending and twisting one does in the course of a normal day until it’s forbidden.
The NP assured me that “fusions are HARD” and it’ll take at least a year before I feel normal again. Crap. I thought it was going to be 3-4 months. I think maybe the worst will be over in four months.
I wanted to not have to live on pain killers for the rest of my life, but holy moly, if I’d known it was going to be this hard….nope, I do worry what 20-30 years of those chemicals would do to my organs, so I’m still hoping this is worth it.

Hubby is off on some errands and doing some grocery shopping for me, so I don’t have to lift heavy bags. He’s also going to pick up rent from one of our tenants for me, since I have to reach over and unlock a gate to get to his unit.
Yeah, that ain’t happenin’. Not today.
I am going to pick up some rent that was delivered to Wal-Mart in my name. Hubby can’t do that, so I’ll also pick up some keto items that are light enough for me to carry while I’m there. Then to the bank. I may swing by the thrift store to see if they have any of the stacking storage shelves of which I’ve become fond. They are sturdy, a good size for my jars, help block sunlight, and easy to move around when necessary. They get an occasional drop off. I’ll get to say hello to my thrift store ladies, too.
Then a quick stop to HEB for meds and the nearby Hobby Lobby to see if I can match a bead for a broken rosary in need of repair.
Then I think I’ll come home and lay down for a bit.

Judicial Watch never gets the attention they deserve for the amazing work they do. This story is absolutely stunning. Tom Fitton was on WABC this morning talking about this suit.
We just settled a federal election integrity lawsuit against New York City after the city removed 441,083 ineligible names from the voter rolls and promised to take reasonable steps to clean its voter registration lists in the future.
We filed the lawsuit in July after the city failed to clean voter rolls for years. The lawsuit, filed under the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), pointed out that New York City removed only 22 names under federal law over six years (Judicial Watch v Valentine et al. (No.1:22-cv-03952)).
Our suit detailed how New York City’s “own recent data concedes that there were only 22 total” removals under this provision “during a six-year period, in a city of over 5.5 million voters. These are ludicrously small numbers of removals given the sizable populations of these counties.”
Moreover, the “almost complete failure of Kings, Queens, New York, Bronx, and Richmond Counties, over a period of at least six years, to remove voters” under a key provision of federal law “means that there are untold numbers of New York City registrations for voters who are ineligible to vote at their listed address because they have changed residence or are otherwise ineligible to vote.”
We’re talking about 8% of the total voter rolls there.

ok, one more from the FiL files.
He was in the hospital with colon cancer. They were going to do the colostomy thing, but when they opened him up, they found the cancer had spread everywhere, so they stitched him back up.
As you might imagine he was in quite a bit of pain, so they had the IV’s going.
A bit of background: He was raised Presbyterian and had intended to convert but never got around to it. He always went to mass with the family but didn’t take communion.
He knew time was short so he asked for a priest, intending to convert right then. He also asked that his pain meds be stopped so he would be of clear mind. He was incredibly grouchy after a while.
Finally the priest arrived and kicked everyone out. FiL made his confession, received confirmation, received Holy Communion, and Anointing of the Sick.
Right after, he asked for the pain meds to be restored. About 30 min later he was his old self, making jokes like he had a couple drinks in him.
Sadly, he passed a day or two later. I’ve always thought since then that he received the greatest gift. He was given the opportunity to make his peace and find that comfort when he really needed it.

What about “normal” loopy?

I can handle “normal” loopy. It’s the enhanced loopiness that I must avoid behind the wheel.
My timer is about to go off. I guess I’ll quit making the radio beep when I walk by now.

Like a number of products, my HEB doesn’t even carry the half-calf Folgers.
They have been systematically discontinuing many name-brand products and expanding their store brand shelf space for several years. Products just disappear.I asked them for years to stock the tiny cans of Spicy V-8 that Fay liked for breakfast.
No luck.

I can find hickory smoked ham only at my neighborhood Kroger now. Every other store stopped carrying it. They carry the sickeningly sweet honey ham lunch meat instead.
Hubby doesn’t like the Black Forest Ham product, which I’ll gladly eat. I can usually find that, but no hickory. So, I try to make occasional trips to Kroger to keep him happy.

All the efforts of Elon Musk appear to have no effect on the White House’s intentions to manipulate social media and the news industry with their lies. Natalie Winters has the story out of the UK.
Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines revealed the White House’s vast efforts to “debunk” disinformation and “false narratives,” including about the Russia-Ukraine War, while speaking with a leading British intelligence officer, who called on Western intelligence agencies to “prebunk” disinformation and use “alliances” between big tech and the government to make people view government-backed narratives with more “trust.”
The stunning admissions – which follow confirmation that American intelligence agencies have been colluding with social media platforms to censor Americans – came during an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today program featuring Jeremy Fleming as a guest host.
Fleming, the Director of the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), the United Kingdom’s Intelligence, Cyber and Security Agency, also called on intelligence agencies to take a more active role in countering “disinformation,” proposing that intelligence agencies begin “pre-bunking” allegedly false narratives before they become mainstream.
Fleming also alluded to “alliances” between “big tech” and government being used to mainstream certain narratives in a more effective manner in the interview.

I agree. All of the sweet ham products suck. Especially a honey-baked ham.

Love honey baked ham. Got a HEB version of one in the fridge that we had New Year’s day. I need to cut it up in serving sizes and freeze but I’m out of vacuum seal bags, I axed the wife to order me some from Amazon. Yesterday I asked her when they getting here, Oh, in February. I think it will be kind of “dry aged” by then. Oh well, on to plan B.

List of Biden Tax Hikes Hitting Americans on Jan. 1
- $6.5 Billion Natural Gas Tax Which Will Increase Household Energy Bills
- $12 Billion Crude Oil Tax Which Will Increase Household Costs
- $1.2 Billion Coal Tax Which Will Increase Household Energy Bills
- $74 Billion Stock Tax Which Will Hit Your Nest Egg — 401(k)s, IRAs and Pension Plans
- $225 Billion Corporate Income Tax Hike Which Will Be Passed on to Households
Tax Foundation also warned that current supply chain issues could be worsened by the book tax’s disproportionate burden on key industries. The report concluded that “the coal industry faces the heaviest burden of the book minimum tax, facing a net tax hike of 7.2 percent of its pretax book income, followed by automobile and truck manufacturing, which faces a 5.1 percent tax hike.”

BTW – I told the nurse practitioner about the waltz we had to do to find a pharmacy for my pain meds. I was told it was because they were a controlled substance.
NP told me there was a shortage.
At least we found a pharmacy that can handle the scrip. Took four tries, but we did it.

Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., said the House Republican meeting was “hostile,” and that McCarthy’s attempt to persuade hard-line Republicans to vote for him fell flat.
“The meeting was very hostile and I don’t think it did anything to persuade those who are inclined to vote against Kevin McCarthy,” Good told Fox News. Good is one of five Republicans who have said they cannot vote for McCarthy.

Snow go for NYC’s electric garbage trucks that can’t handle winter weather
The department aims to switch all 6,000 vehicles in its fleet from gas to electric as part of the state’s goal to reduce emissions by 2040. But city officials say they haven’t found electric garbage trucks that are powerful enough to plow snow.
The department has ordered seven electric rear loader garbage trucks, custom-made by Mack and costing more than $523,000 each, with delivery slated for the spring. Used for curbside trash collection, the department’s current rear loader truck fleet runs on diesel and is outfitted with plows to clear streets during snow season.
But officials say previous electric trucks tested by sanitation have not lasted longer than four hours plowing snow before running out of power, and the new electric trucks will be used for trash collection but not plowing snow.

McCarthy may or may not win in the end, but whomever is chosen it will not be a Jim Jordan-type conservative.

Your friendly H‑E‑B should have some bulk coffee bins from which you can buy as much or little as you want. They’ll have grinders nearby in case you don’t have one at home.
You could buy a couple ounces of whatever flavor/variety strikes your fancy to try, then return for more later on.

Republicans always have their brawls in public in front of all the terrified men, women and children. They destroy all the furniture, break the windows and smash the mirrors.
Democrats have their knife and fistfights in the dark, behind the building at 2 o’clock in the morning while America is sleeping in their beds. They carry out their dead bodies, tie them with concrete and throw them in the Potomac.

Eye-Patch McCain takes a stand on the Speaker vote: Who is the real enemy of the people? https://thehill.com/homenews/house/3796652-crenshaw-says-hardline-mccarthy-opponents-are-enemies-now/
-
FYI, in case you don’t know it, that poor soul who had a heart attack on the field of play is already dead, he just does not know it yet. That is why you much have a DNR in place. They can keep him like this, intubated indefinitely, but he is gone for all practical purposes. I’ve known two separate instances of similarity, and in both cases, they eventually were allowed to pass once the machines were removed. Once put on the vent, they just do not come off, and his brain was already damaged by the time they started CPR. As to the cause, we don’t know if it was the hit or an underlying defect to begin with – and there’s always COVID to fall back on.
-
I’m watching the second vote for Speaker. This is interesting, and the way a political battle should be fought – out in the open for all to see. McCarthy is not that much different than Pelosi, and if he is eventually elected, the never Trumpers have defeated the conservatives and will pound them into dust,. It’s a fight for our political future as conservatives as the Uniparty is clearly already in the majority. What little power we have must be preserved, and Eye-Patch McCain must be crushed, although we just had that opportunity and failed. McCarthy is just another wing of the corrupt Washington establishment.
-
Just like everything else in DC this is how the GoopeeCons will decide who the speaker will be.

The Speaker vote ended at least 15 minutes ago and yet still no announcement. I think they are waiting for the mail in ballots to arrive.

Conservative students should file complaints for speech that attacks their identity – especially when it comes from a professor, said Adam Ellwanger, a professor of English at the University of Houston-Downtown, in a recent telephone interview with The College Fix.
“There is a perception that the DEI and Title IX offices exist just to support leftist activism, but there is nothing keeping students from filing complaints on the basis of their own protected classes,” said Ellwanger (pictured). “You could be a straight white male and it doesn’t mean you can’t be protected by Title IX.”

It obvious that something is up on the Speaker’s vote. We just went through a second round, which hasn’t happened in a hundred years or something, and the dramatic roll call vote was recorded for all to hear. But no results announced. That means that the sneaky eReps stand up and proudly and loudly vote for someone other than McCarthy, and then sneak around and change their vote after the fact and hide it from their constituents. So right now, the hold outs are seeing what they can milk out of McCarthy to change their vote to his side. Absolutely without principle, it’s only what their vote is worth on the open market.
Winston Churchill reported asked a lady one time if she would sleep with him for $1 million, and she reportedly replied yes, $1 million for one night. Then he asked if she would do it for $10, whereupon she replied of course not, what do you think I am? He replied that I think we have already established what you are, we are now merely haggling over the price. Same with the conservative hold outs.
-
Isn’t that an Alinsky rule – “Use their own rules against them”?
-
I’m ok with hammering out a strong deal with McCarthy, I believe the nineteen, or enough of them, could cause him a lot of problems along the road if he wavers. No we aren’t getting anywhere near what we want but our side does not have much leverage at this point.
-
“Waiting on mail-in ballots” made me snicker a little.
-
Yeah, I thought I might be a little ambitious on my “first day out” schedule. Wings aren’t completely unclipped, yet.
I forgot to bring the broken rosary with me, so Hobby Lobby was out, as was the thrift shop. By the time I made it through Wal-Mart to get rent and then to the bank, my back was feeling a little tender. It’s ice pack time before I try to sit up and do bookkeeping.
While at the bank, I found out the bank manager is also out. He must’ve had some kind of coughing fit, separating cartilage in his rib cage. Banker Nick told me that the manger said it was worse than passing a kidney stone. Poor guy. And it’s not like he can stop breathing to give the ribs time to rest, either.
-
McCarthy picked up 1 vote since the first round. Still 19 hold outs, which surprises me. Each round makes McCarthy weaker even if he is elected Speaker. After this round, if he is still not electable, he should step aside and let someone in who all can agree on. Things are looking up in my opinion so long as our little group continues to hold together.
-
If that 19 vote block holds firm, it may grow. This garbage that we have had to endure since 2008, the last year and actual budget was passed, can not go on. If it means taking a blowtorch to the nether regions of the R party then so be it. Eventually, the Rs are going to have to grow up.
-
Third roll call underway. These guys can’t fold now or they will forever be relegated to the back bench. I’m holding out hope, but not really optimistic. These guys are politicians after all, and their job is not to do the right thing but to do the politically expedient thing in their minds.

#63 – Just one voters opinion…………
I do NOT trust McCarthy any further than I could THROW McConnell!

Update 4:05 p.m.: Kevin McCarthy has just lost the second round of voting for House speaker, falling short by the same number as the first vote. While multiple alternative candidates shared a cumulative 19 votes in the first round, in the second vote, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) received all of the 19 votes. Democrats once again voted unanimously for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries. The latest vote will certainly put pressure on McCarthy to step aside for a consensus Republican candidate.
-
Strong Message to McCarthy: Your rino Deep State BS ain’t making it anymore; step aside now for the good of the country.
-
Jeffries wouldn’t last long as Speaker anyway. Republicans would immediately move to vacate the chair (MTV) and start all this over again, and they would do that over and over again. If the Freedom Caucus holdouts won’t vote to sustain an MTV against Jeffries, then why would they insist on keeping it to use against a fellow Republican?

I nominate the Tomball Pig for Speaker.

In the second vote, all of the original 19 dissenters voted for Jordan.
Heh.

I’m not counting the votes, but apparently someone over at CNBC is. It’s time for a new face to be nominated. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/01/03/house-speaker-vote-republican-kevin-mccarthy-looks-to-win-support.html
Apparently he lost the support of 1 more Republican in the third round. If he is nominated again, look for the Dems to vote for him to push him over the top. If that happens then we are really screwed. If a few Dems skip the regular vote and then show up at the end to vote for McCarthy it will really be chaos. And he already moved in to the Speaker’s office, so that would be fun to watch him moving out again.
-
Why is it that looking at the Dem side of the aisle reminds me so much of the Star Wars bar scene?
-
CNBC called it correctly. So the House adjourned to go make some sausage and try it again another day. I think McCarthy exposed his weakness by allowing this to come to a vote today without having it wrapped up.
-
According to Michael Shellenberger, this happened on 60 Minutes on Sunday:
Scott Pelley claimed Paul Erlich declared a) humans are causing a “sixth mass extinction” & b) that it would require “five Earths” for all humans to enjoy a Western standard of living.
I want to know why we can’t revoke Pelley’s citizen of Texas ID card. This weasel has been embarrassing the state and its people for decades now. He was born in San Antonio, raised in Lubbock and moved to NYC. They can have him. Let him stay there.

So I am curious about what everybody thinks is going to happen tomorrow in the House ?
-
Here is a list of the 20 Republicans voting against McCarthy. https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/new-congress-sworn-in-2023/h_734f9291d6da38d41d9789b8da48516d
Someone asked me the other day about my Representative Pfleuger, and I answered that I did not know much about him. Well, since generally the most important vote they cast will be for Speaker and my standard question is who are you going to support for Speaker,. Since his name is not included among these 20, I must assume that he is voting for the Swamp.

FYI, in case you don’t know it, that poor soul who had a heart attack on the field of play is already dead, he just does not know it yet. That is why you much have a DNR in place.
Great advice EG. A few months back I believe you posted two great links to documents that should be in everyone’s Will.
I will probably get put in Time Out for 2 links. But here goes.

After the agony of dealing with Dad’s poorly prepared Will I’m more motivated not to subject my heirs to the same.

I asked you about August Pfluger, R-San Angelo, your congressman, the other day on a subject that escapes my mind at the moment.
It was important but my recall function is not what it used to be.
-
EG
I completely disagree about the most important vote a representative will cast is about who will be speaker, but it wouldn’t be the first time we crossed swords.
-
It was the most important question if anyone were to ask you about voting for a supposed Dem, is their first vote going to be for Pelosi?
-
TP – I could have said probably the most important vote a member will cast is for Speaker, because nothing happens unless the Speaker allows it to happen. And the Reps have managed to put together a string of terrible Speakers, from John Boner to Paul Ryan and I forget the rest of them. If the Speaker doesn’t like it, the rest of them never get to even take the issue up, so I would contend that the decision to elect a Speaker is the most important vote a member will cast in any given session, absent say declaration of war or other emergency of some kind. The rest of the time they are expected to fall in line behind the Speaker anyway.
Should the Reps decide to give Scalice a shot at the job, he’s just about as bad as McCarthy, so they are effectively the same person. If the Dems are smart, and generally they are when it come to obtaining power and not giving it up, they will allow a few of them members to cross over and vote for the speaker of their choice thus making that person beholding to them for the office at the expense of the Repbulicans. That’s how we always wind up with these limp duck Republicans as Speaker of the Texas House. -

I don’t disagree on most of your points.
-
I believe there are times when a House member has to vote on a truly decisive resolution or bill that transcends the Speaker vote. Admittedly, this is not often, but it does happen. The Omnibus bill just passed is one of them.

Tuesdays for some reason often have more comments than other weekdays around here.

My congressman, Michael McCaul, chaired the Homeland Security Committee from 2013 thru 2019.
This afternoon M. Berry said that Eyepatch McCain (Dan Crenshaw) has been promised the job by McCarthy.
Crenshaw has been calling the McCarthy opponents “the f’’n enemy”.
-
I loathe Dan Crenshaw. When he was running for office and was the new latest and greatest i warned that he was bad news. Good grief did I get raked over the coals. Now the people that raked me over the coals are weeping and wailing.
-
I don’t know whether Crenshaw is an improvement or a disappointment compared to McCaul.
It’s really hard to tell. McCaul is a dull dud in my book. Crenshaw is an attention grabbing doofus.
Maybe we could get Homer Simpson for the job.
This is the state of Texas and, for God’s sake, you would think the people of this state could find better candidates to represent them.
-
Texpat
Crenshaw was elected on what i call the patriot factor. Everyone just swooned that he was a wounded warrior wearing an eye patch and all that. No real questions of substance were asked in what he believed, what kind of legislating style he had or nothing. Oh he checked off a couple important boxes all right but again it was beauty is skin deep thing.

A young, handsome, square-jawed vet guy with an eyepatch. Oh, man, it’s made for the movies and online fame. Script a few short speeches, the right slogans, bumpersticker quotes and you got a candidate…outta the gate, goin’ to the inside…

Yup
It is sad that from my little hovel here I did more research in an hour than most people did in oh i dunno 1 minute commercial. When they were confronted with Crenshaw’s own words voters did not wanna here it. OBTW and that was during the primaries, you know when the change has to be made.

Tuesdays is when we get the updated status from the infirmary.

😀
😀
Funny because it’s true.

Let’s not forget that the leader of the pack in trying to tell us what Eye Patch was saying was not what he really meant to say. Berry was all in, even when the Patch started acting liker McCain. EP was talking about the need for gun control and such early on. Has Berry changed his mind? I don’t listen to him too much these days.
In other news, it’s about bed time out here again. Tucker has a good description and analysis of McCarthy and his allegiances, which are mainly to the DC lobbyists. Scalise is the obvious replacement, but he’s just like McCarthy except from Louisiana instead of California. They know that they only have to pick off one or two of the dissenters and the rest of the dissenter coalition will fall apart, so they can offer up a couple of plums and wrap this deal up tomorrow. People like Kevin Brady would sell their mothers for a political favor or two.
You all have a good evening now. Nite nite.
