Washington Post’s MENSA chapter asked its members to choose one word from Webster’s; replace one letter, and then provide a new definition to it. These are the top winners.
Since I can’t/won’t even think about sitting in a car for two weeks after surgery, I tried to “attend” my church’s Latin mass at midnight. All I got was a black screen, so I went searching for another Christmas mass.
I found one, but it took me a while to realize it was from Australia! I was trying to figure out why the Latin sounded funny.
Peace to all and contemplation of the simple, real Christmas in the midst of all the other pomp and circumstance that has attached itself to that which came first.

#55 Dr phil Good says: December 24, 2022 at 6:25 pm Merry Christmas to all you hosers. Did I miss anybody? Abuck says: Merry Christmas from the “Peanut Gallery ” all. I’m better at Lurking than posting I have discovered. Darren might echo that as well. I really enjoy the great links and product reviews though. I recently bought some of that great glass cleaner for my Truck and it is great. Maybe after Christmas I will buy that high dollar toaster oven you all recommend. Looks like Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church has completely called off covid. The main church was packed. It looked like the overflow in the day school’s auditorium was similarly packed.
I can’t imagine what Midnight mass is gonna be like later. The vigil is usually very full, but the Midnight is usually so packed that you’ve got to get there almost an hour early to grab a chunk of a pew. It’s not too bad getting there that early; there’s lots of fun Christmas carols being sung.
Just in case you missed it. At dinner time on December 2 , I received a text from Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, founder of SpaceX, founder of the Boring Company, founder of Neuralink, on most days the richest man in the world (possibly history), and, as of October, the owner of Twitter. Was I interested in looking at Twitter’s archives, he asked. And how soon could I get to Twitter HQ? Two hours later, I was on a flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco with my wife, Free Press writer Nellie Bowles, and our three-month-old baby. In the… Read more »

Pursuant to my comment at 11:55 AM yesterday about the review of the book, Don’t Go to College: A Case for Revolution, this happened in Utah this month. Utah will no longer require a bachelor’s degree for about 98 percent of its civil servant jobs, according to a recent decision by the state’s Republican governor. “The state executive branch has 1,080 different classified jobs. Of those, 98% – or 1,058 – do not require a degree,” according to a news release shared with The College Fix by Governor Spencer Cox ‘s media team. “Instead, the state’s hiring managers and hiring committees consider… Read more »

I was able to fill the patio water tub, because the faucet out back was working well today. I haven’t been around to check the faucet on the east side, but it’s right outside my bathroom where running water and flushing are NORMAL. I also haven’t checked the faucet on the west side — the only one I put a styrofoam cover on — but it’s right outside the kitchen wall, where water is barely dribbling when tested. At least the central heat is working to keep us (me and 7 cats) alive. I also have 20 y.o. Millie on… Read more »
Just read a story about a woman whose fully loaded grocery cart got away from her and slammed into a parked car. Grocery Cart woman (GCW) tried to blame it on someone else, screaming it wasn’t her (GCW’s) fault. Parked Car Man (PCM) got out of his car to confront GCW, and saw right through her accusations. Of course, the blamed person (who reporting the story) said the groceries didn’t belong to her. PCM turned back the harpy and asked if the groceries belong to her, GCW. GCW kept insisting it wasn’t her basket, so PCM said “Well, I guess… Read more »
Walk around the house and everything looks OK. Water meter dial is not spinning, and no evidence of water leaks. Looking at the electricity meter I may have an electricity leak though the way it’s spinning. I put a little hot water into the water trough outside. It appears to be frozen solid and it’s too heavy for me to try to move, but there is a little room on top for a couple of pitchers of hot water, so the animals and birds can get a drink for now. Since it is above freezing, they may have a little… Read more »
When ditching a small plane onto a soft surface such as a plowed or muddy field or such, it is recommended that you land “gear up.” This pilot was unclear on the concept, since he has a fixed gear airplane. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLIIvUAA02s As you can see, when he came to rest his gear was pointed up.
Finally checking in. My sleep schedule is shot all to heck these days. The weather is real pretty today, and after Bonanza I may just sit on my back porch bench to pray my rosary. I’m walking without the walker today. I realized yesterday how much I was doing without it already, so I formalized my reality and transferred all my ‘carry with me’ items into a small back bag. It holds my meds, my “med taken” schedule, my phone, and my TV remotes. The grabber isn’t small enough to fit into the back so I just try to keep… Read more »
Up to 35 out here now, with very bright sunshine. Think I’ll take a walk around the house nd check everything out. I figure that if the little spinner at the meter is not moving that I’m OK and don’t have a water leak.

It’s 32 now at Chez Harp, and above freezing all day until 8 pm. Sunday morning is more cold-and-miserable, but will be in the 40s by 2 pm for 80-Y.O.s Christmas meal.
#23 SD: My neighbor alerted me to the problem and brought over a box of fittings, unfortunately none would work. The guys that came over have not yet been back with an invoice so that we could pay them. I did give the guy who did the work a little bottle of Honeyshine. So far the irrigation system is just capped off and I am real good with that as it will not be used for quite a while.
Do yourself a favor and install a new shutoff as close to the ground as you can. Right above that, put in a T with a valve on the base part of the T that you can use to drain the whole thing. Put a similar T arrangement on the outflow side near the ground. Just shut off the water, open the two little valves on the back flow preventer, and open the two drain valves.
I did that after snowmageddon. I didn’t bother to wrap it. Air won’t freeze at any temperatures we’re likely to ever see.
