It’s Monday already and we’ve had a fine time visiting daughter and SIL but it’s time to be heading back to LA. We’ll be flying back to Northwest Florida Beaches International in a little bit. Great visit but it will good to get home.

Did you happen to go by Ratcliff Stadium, home of Permian High School Panthers of Friday Night Lights fame? I’ve only been to Odessa one time at an oil show in the 80’s and looked it up and drove by. I’m sure it’s not much anymore with all the mega high school football stadiums out there now but it was something in those days, seats twenty thousand and they filled it up every Friday night.

#5 GJT, no we didn’t make it. The kids have only been here 6 years and likely don’t know that history but I’ll try to remember it next time.

I said I went there in the 80’s but it was probably 90 or 91 as the Friday Night Lights book then movie didn’t come out until then. I’m sure they are aware of it but they need to read the book or watch the movie, I was fascinated by the story.

As in Katy High School football, population growth has caused more high schools and the power high school football programs have gotten watered down the same has happened in the Permian Basin area so no more dynasties.

GJT, I asked S.I.L. about it and of course, being a native Texan he knew about it and has been there. We talked about Friday night football and Alabama is crazy but Texas has us beat by a mile.

Your #8 I agree and it is a shame how things have changed and the population shift has happened in Alabama as well. Lots of folks in my Podunk hometown have fled to the country schools but luckily they’ve not managed to dilute the little 1A powerhouse’s  by too much. Our big 4A school isn’t what it used to be but still a 4A.

It is hard to believe that the tiny farming town of New Brockton is now a suburb of Enterprise, and it’s no longer a farming town as much as a military town. That said; we have a lot of transplants moving here but the military background usually makes for better citizens, unlike Florida where the Yankees are trying to ruin that state.

GJT, I’m more familiar with “the Panthers” (Permian High”s mascot) stadium than I would like. My school (Abilene High) had been a powerhouse in high school football for many years before my time there – but we were only so-so during my time… And the Panthers and my AHS Eagles were arch rivals.  I was in marching band, and (as the visitors) we went first marching at half-time… Finished our program, we marched off the field onto the track, and knelt so as not to distract from their show – if I recall it was their homecoming game – and as we knelt and watched, people in the stands started pouring drinks down our backs and throwing ice at us. They might have been great at football, but some musta missed the “how to behave like a decent human being” lessons…. I remember my Mama saying “they may call them full of ‘MOJO’ but I’d say they behaved like they were full of something else…”

We’re finally getting that rain they talked about Saturday night and Sunday. 52 breezy and raining, I.E. Chicago weather, nasty. 100% chance of rain dropping to 50% by 11 AM, 30% by 2 PM when our flight leaves. BTW; We could have flew out at 6:05 AM and made it to north Florida by 4:30 PM or leave at 11:30 AM or 2:05 PM and get there at 6:15 PM. Remember you can’t get there from here, you have to go to Dallas or Houston first. 😉

Coffee in hand, so I’m perusing the CoffeeandCovid.com page, and…..WHEN WILL THESE PEOPLE GO TO JAIL?

/snipping all the precursor snark, dangit

On Friday, BioRxIV naively published a blandly-named study titled “Role of spike in the pathogenic and antigenic behavior of SARS-CoV-2 BA.1 Omicron.” There are 23 scientists credited with helping create the study, and the acknowledgements identify it was funded by a major grant from the NIH/NIAID.

The study provides a detailed, step-by-step recipe for how to genetically enhance the Omicron virus to make it vaccine-resistant, lung-penetrable, and 80% lethal.

They didn’t even wait till the first pandemic was over! They’re so excited for a doomsday virus, and so impatient with Mother Nature, that they are going to just manufacture it themselves, through gain-of-function research that should be so toxic it gets you hounded out of your career and driven into a life of humiliating obscurity. Not published.

What the ??????????   Let’s take a virus and make it as lethal as possible?  And with my tax money, natch. Childers agrees with me:

Why, oh why, are these criminals, I mean scientists, still allowed to tinker around with this kind of explosive material? Why haven’t we ALREADY passed laws criminalizing ALL gain of function research? Seriously. Gain of function research merits the death penalty or something, no appeals. And WHY is the government still PAYING FOR gain of function research, or whatever obtuse euphemism they are using these days to disguise the fact that it’s ‘gain of function research’?

I guess the “vaccine” to treat this monster bug will be even more expensive needed.  But there will be fewer taxpayers to pay for it.  No problem. We won’t need as many injections, either.  It all balances out, right?

More from C&C.  There can’t be enough ranting about this!

The preprint study carefully and methodically walks the reader through exactly how the scientists created the ultra-lethal covid variant, step by step, right down to describing the make and model of the incubator, the names and serial numbers of the human cell lines, and the brand of centrifuge. It’s a flipping recipe. Anybody could follow it.

Like…Iran.  Russia.  Syria.  CHINA.  Heck, any two-bit dictatorship with enough money or guns to buy or force some viral researcher into creating this in any lab they build for them…

And, this is just ONE study. If they’re paying for THIS kind of research, imagine what ELSE the government must be funding, scads of other projects described only in obscure, densely-worded grant proposals buried deep in the NIH’s sub-basement file cabinets.

Sometimes I’m convinced we are literally sprinting toward the apocalypse, at the speed of science. All those horrible afflictions in the Book of the Revelation, the terrible boils and deadly plagues and stuff? I’m starting to believe that those aren’t caused by God. I’m starting to believe we’re going to do it to ourselves.

Satan loves to use humans to hurt humans.  It’s a two-fer for him.

Next up at C&C – a very pro-jab doctor who was  about to start his battle against lymphoma was in a hurry to get his booster jab before the immune suppressing drugs were administered.

But after the jab, he quickly started feeling even worse, and more worrisome, his lymph nodes were swelling fast. Three weeks later, he went back to see his cancer doctor (coincidentally, his brother), and both men were astounded that the new scans showed “a brand-new barrage of cancer lesions—so many spots that it looked like someone had set off fireworks inside Michel’s body” — especially in his right armpit and along the right side of his body.

Oddly, the same side where he’d got his third covid shot.

Goldman immediately suspected the vaccine, but he wasn’t sure. He used to run an institute for vaccine-technology research, and he’s been interviewed many times about covid, reassuring the public of the safety of the jabs, and the safety of mRNA vaccines in particular.

The story goes on about the angst this doctor suffered, trying to reconcile his feelings about vaccines and what happened to his cancer.  He finally found a link, published an article, and I am happy to report that his cancer is under control.  He’s convinced himself that his situation is rare, that he’s a fluke, a random act of nature.  Personally, I think he’s deluding himself because it’s too difficult for him to give up his personal feelings about the jab – maybe he’s too emotionally invested in it, having been such a public supporter of the dang things.

But Goldman admits he’s struggling over whether to take the fourth shot. “I don’t know what I will do,” he told the reporter.

Well. I know what I would do. But Goldman’s an expert, and so he’s baffled.

I saw this story in the news: Bodybuilder and fitness author Doug Brignole, 63, died suddenly and unexpectedly last Thursday, of “undetermined causes.”   He was very pro-jab, even quoting:

“I have enough confidence in the vaccine, based on my research, to get it done. Those of you who think the vaccine kills people can use me as a test. If I die, you were right. If I don’t die, and have no ill effects, you were wrong, and should admit it (at least to yourselves).”

You should see the pictures of this guy.  Impressive that at his age he could look like that.

    Then there’s this one:

WWE star and Reality TV star Sara Lee, 30, winner of the 2015 “Tough Enough” competition and mother of three young children, died suddenly and unexpectedly on October 6th.

The family picture chokes me up, thinking about who is left behind.  Those kids are beautiful.

I can’t remember who else, but I do remember seeing the stories of multiple folks who recently, suddenly and unexpectedly, died.  Many of them were athletes, more than a few of them soccer players.  They are noticed probably because they just drop on the pitch and it’s on film.  How many “plain folks” do this and go unnoticed?

Yesterday was a video of a Spanish costumed character in a kid’s show who was one moment standing and the next moment falling backwards flat on the floor. It took the other characters a moment to realize what happened.  The little boy in costume just stood there watching, as the adults were frantically calling for medical help and making futile gestures of trying to save her.  I can’t even imagine being a little kid and seeing my beloved storybook character dying in front of me on TV. Hopefully, many of the little ones are too little to understand.

And the beauty company Ulta decided to make a commercial touting its wokeness, using two trans men playing with their products.  One had a beard, the other was a teenager trying to enjoy girlhood before becoming a “woman”.

It did not go over well.  Remember all those black people getting angry if white people wore braids, claiming “you are appropriating my culture”?  Like braids haven’t been around in every culture since women got tired of trying to manage their hair?

The same thing is now happening to trans men – they are “appropriating womanhood”.  I believe Matt Walsh made this comment in his interview on the Dr. Phil show to a trans guy: “You are wearing womanhood like a costume.”  Or some such.  The trans guy and his gay friend claimed they were emotionally damaged by the interview so it was yanked from the TV network and Hulu.  It still exists on the internet, though.  But I digress.

But I appreciated conservative commenter Alexandra Lains’ thoughtful comment the most. Among other pointed remarks, Alexandra observed that “girlhood is not a product that you can purchase at the makeup store.”

Indeed. When it went after girlhood, Ulta, which probably thought it would be praised and celebrated for its delightful woke sensitivity, got the sharp end of womanhood instead, right in the eyeball.

    RE: Pinto

I will always be reminded of MIL’s sister, Aunt D., who drove a Pinto.  MIL was closest to Aunt D., and they actually took an RV trip, roving the country trying to locate ancient relatives for genealogy reasons. MIL took her on her last overseas trip, to Australia.   I was glad they took those trips.  MIL didn’t trust Aunt D’s children, who we all here in Houston believed were robbing her blind.  One daughter appropriated her house, moving Aunt D into an RV trailer, then while in charge of her finances, was probably stealing her SS payments.  Aunt D was moved from one child to another, since none of them really wanted to care for her long term.  Aunt D suffered from diabetes and didn’t take care of herself. The last time we heard from her, it seemed she was beginning to suffer some dementia as well.  So, MIL took her on those trips as a way of giving her an inheritance, instead of leaving her money.  Smart move.  Made great memories while Aunt D was still able, and her kids couldn’t take the money from her.  Her kids had taken MIL for a total of $70,000 in “loans” and MIL was pretty wissed off at them. As was Hubby. Anyway…

When MIL died, her house was chock full of stuff.  Antiques, craft supplies, etc.,  Nothing of much value, unfortunately, but I was put in charge of garage sale-ing the house and clearing it out. Aunt D showed up and was going to collect the many dozens (hundreds?) of picture frames, for craft purposes, I assume.  Don’t know where she was going to put them, much less carry them in her Pinto.  I sold one frame and she went nuts. I’d told her that she could put “her” stuff in the garage after she blew up over the sale.  The next morning when I arrived at the house, she had moved every single picture frame into the garage.  And every other item that she could cram into the garage as well: office chair, light fixture, all kinds of furniture, kitchen item, etc.  She filled up the back of MIL’s truck, stacked things filling all available floor space, etc.

I called Hubby and told him that Aunt D was trying to clean out the house.  He responded that he was not going to use his truck to haul that stuff back to deep East Texas for her, and she wasn’t taking it anyway.  He knew that most of that was going to her kids – what was Aunt D going to use those items for in her trailer?

She ended up cramming as many picture frames into her Pinto as she could, leaving us with a pile of stuff in the garage, and left the next day.  She said she was coming back with a pickup truck to get the rest.  Of course, she never did.  We have fond memories of her and Uncle Bob from years ago.  That’s how I want to remember her.

But I’ll never forget her efforts to get every…last….frame….into that little car.

    Good Gloomy Morning, Hamsters,

Had a NW breeze at sunup and 70 degrees so the front has arrived.  Unfortunately no rain graced our place, though we still have an overcast sky that maybe, possibly will produce something useful.  The breeze added to our growing dead leaf amount scattered hither and yon.  It is the time of year we hope for more NW fronts to come through and blow the fallen leaves off the sidewalk and front and back yards, so we don’t have to rake/sweep them.  Of course the live oaks are not contributing now, just waiting until early spring to shed.

Our American elm still has most of its leaves and very few of them have turned yellow, but it knows when to shed once we have some chilly weather and less daylight.  Quite amazing it has done so well all these years considering it is several hundred miles south of its range that stops in mid-Oklahoma.  Every tree service person who sees it for the first time is astounded that it is doing so well and has to look at the leaves to determine it is not a cedar elm that naturally grows here.

Side note on that company: their older rigs that had a lot of hydraulic leaks just used water in the hydraulic system vs hydraulic fluid as there were yuge fines involved with fluid leaks in the ocean. Those of you on Medicare – and not on an Advantage plan – surely know of the insane amount of letters/documentation that you receive following any interaction with the medical system, including statements from Medicare, from your Supplemental insurance company, and from your generally useless Part D insurance company.

Should you have an actual hospital stay, these letters expand exponentially. Should an event involve two hospitals – as happened with Fay – the resulting notifications can only be described as total chaos and insanity. Five months hence, I am still getting these notifications on Fay.

Even under normal circumstances, trying to interpret these documents is impossible at best. Typically, your eyes glaze over and you simply put them in a pile. Over there, somewhere.

However. I do want to share a “win” that -as of this morning – was confirmed.

A few weeks ago I received a bill from Bellville General Hospital for $333.10. Even though the bill seemed to indicate that Medicare and Fay’s Supplement had been billed first, I called the company – in Nebraska – to confirm it. I made out the check and mailed it in.

Last week, I received a notice from Medicare which summarized some of the recent activity on Fay’s account. What caught my eye was the amount of $333.10. It indicated that Medicare denied the claim and it was accompanied by the notation “YOU SHOULD NOT BE BILLED FOR THIS”.

Wow. I had never seen anything like that before.

So, I contacted the local billing office at Bellville General Hospital and told her my story. It took her about 45 seconds to find the item, confirm that it was a coding problem, and tell me she was formally notifying the person in charge of doing refunds (and would personally call her, too) and I should have a refund check within a week or so. Shocking.

Note to BSue….Out of the blue, AMR Ambulance
has refunded both of my payments to them following an “internal audit which indicates you were billed in error”.

Now, I have seen the official Medicare Code books. Last one I saw was about two inches thick. And that was years ago. Every possible thing a doctor can do for you has a code (or five). I am certain they there is a special code if your doctor raises his eyebrows at you.

The entire system is so complicated. Just ripe for mistakes and fraud.

    RE: Medicare

Mom was on both Medicare and Medicaid, being destitute her last years.  Since Eldest Sis took on the executrix duties (since the Harpies made that impossible for me to do; Eldest and I both agreed that no matter what I did after Mom died, they’d find a problem with it and harangue me to my grave), she had to deal with all of that paperwork.

Surprisingly, even though Mom never had more than $2k in cash, somehow when Eldest went through all of the funds held by the nursing home and some other reimbursements, she had over $10K in her estate.  According to the Medicaid, anything under $10 was usually not worth them going after.  Eldest called me and said she tried to get it under $10K, but no way.  I replied that since the state had paid for hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical care (including two years of dialysis that Mom had told me for years that she didn’t want), I thought the state was more than entitled to whatever Mom had left over.

IMO, it saved Eldest a whole slew of headaches, as well. We have a brother who’s been missing since 1983 – does she hold  a portion in case he ever shows up?  Will people argue over the few pennies involved in dividing the money among the remaining siblings? Mom actually left *everything* to me, trusting that I’d distribute it as she would wish (and I would have).  Eldest and I had a good laugh over that, knowing the splodey heads that would result when the Harpies realized that all though I was no longer executrix, I was still the sole heir!  (BCS saw the will, and actually asked Eldest Sis if “Mom was in her right mind” when the will was created.  Eldest Sis stomped on her query, firmly.  It was never brought up again.)  All of Mom’s furniture was donated to the nursing home, to avoid such arguments.  I know that the paperwork involved with the agencies and lawyers was a royal PITA.

Good luck on your win, Shannon.  I well remember all those conversations with Eldest as she settled estates for Dad, Beloved Fluttery Aunt, and Mom.  It will get better, eventually.

Countries such as Spain have been forced to import milk from other nations in Europe. But as Europe is also suffering from severe droughts, it could end up importing from the US and China. Something similar was seen in the southern hemisphere summer in Argentina and Brazil.

Meh, it is just milk.  Who cares?  Well if you like milk on your Wheedies your costs at the market are about to go higher.  Alternative work around?  Wheedies and beer.  Now that is a breakfast of champions.

    BUT WAIT……..

Beer provides another striking illustration of the impact of drought. Recently, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considered halting beer production in the northern states, which are suffering from severe drought.

Monterrey is the second most populous city in the country and home to powerful breweries. Beer production requires large amounts of water and in northern Mexico is compromising domestic water supplies. Studies indicate that climate change is threatening the brewing industry in several parts of the world.

Oh crap, not the beer!!!  If it can happen there it can happen here.  How can it get any worse?

Poor Hop Harvest Could Mean Boring Beer

    PS to my #58:

All of y’all: documentation is key.  Because I had a “Mom binder,” I was able to hand off to Eldest Sis all of Mom’s medical records, will, notes on her wishes, communications between the agencies and myself, etc.  All of that proved extremely helpful to Eldest as she worked her way through the paperwork involved when a loved one dies.

If you’re not a paperwork person, become one, at least for this purpose.  Don’t saddle your loved ones the task of locating everything on top of the usual procedural BS during a time of grief and confusion.

    Slight correction….

Since 2012, the Astros now have six consecutive Division titles,  three American League Championships, and one World Series Championship.

    So far.

#60 Tedtam – I might go out on a limb to add… Make sure that your will IS up to date. While Mama didn’t die “intestate,” my aunt (who was executrix of Mama’s estate) and I did get a laugh when we pulled out the will, which named said aunt the legal guardian of both my (elder) brother and myself… Aunt Lora said “Susie – you know how much I love you, but if you ain’t grown up enough by now, since you’re 40… I am not sure there’s much else I can do for ya!!!”

Pretty sure that among the coming changes to MLB, the NL will also have designated hitters. And the infield shift will be gone.

Uhhhhh the National League has the designated hitter rule in effect. DH is MLB wide now.

The rule was adopted by the American League in 1973, while pitchers continued to hit in games played at National League parks. The designated hitter was adopted by the National League as part of the 2022-26 collective bargaining agreement.

    What??

    New York Post

MLB should tweak Division Series format to make it fairer for top seeds

But as entertaining an advertisement as Saturday was for MLB, it also exposed a flaw in its postseason program that needs to be fixed. The best-of-five division series should not be a best-of-five division series. It should be a best-of-seven division series in the name of fairness to the top tournament seeds.

I put some chicken soup together in a small crock pot for Hubby.  I had some odds and ends from the garden, some leftover chicken, and a few dried veggies to throw in.

Soup is not only delicious, it helps me use up those odds and ends. And Hubby likes soup.

But I didn’t make a sammich for him.  And I wasn’t barefoot.  Does that make me a bad wife?

*Hat Tip* – ACE (and emphasis MINE)

Mayor Eric Adams has declared a state of emergency in New York City over the “humanitarian crisis” caused by an influx of asylum seekers from Texas. “This is a humanitarian crisis that started with violence and instability in South America and it is being accelerated by American political dynamics,” he said. He continued, “Thousands of asylum seekers are have been bused into New York City and simply dropped off without notice, coordination or care. And more are arriving every day. This crisis is not of our own making but one that will affect everyone in this city.”

The mayor went on to say that since April, about 17,000 asylum seekers have been bused to the city. That has pushed the total number of people in NYC shelters to a new record of 61,000 people. These are people who can’t legally work, who have school age children and some of whom need medical care. New York has done what it can to accommodate them all but as the mayor explained, “extending that care has come at a great cost to our city and our people.” “It is straining the ability of our city to provide care for New Yorkers in need and is burning through our city’s budget,” he added.

Adams said the crisis would cost the city a billion dollars by the end of this year. He said New York’s “functional and compassionate system” was being “exploited by others for political gain.” “We have not asked for this,” he said.

After praising the compassionate response of NYC thus far, he got to the point: “This is unsustainable.” “We are reaching the outer limit of our ability to help,” he said. And that’s why he announced this state of emergency.

At this point, you may be thinking to yourself, as I am, how do you think it feels to be in Texas and Arizona for the last two years? Mayor Adams is offering all the compassion and support to these asylum seekers showing up on buses but absolutely none to his fellow Americans in southern states who are dealing with many times the number of migrants he has been dealing with.

Tedtam, I have a question… Do you dehydrate your own stock, or use commercial? I’ve got some boxes of broth that are salt free from the HEB store I was thinking about drying to make a couple of soup in a jars, for a trial run… And I’m pretty sure that the mixed veggies I put on early this morning are completely dry – just left them running to make double sure.

Well we made to the Farm here in LA. Left the airport parking lot at exactly 6:30 and rolled in at 8:10, 94 miles but we were in the old GMC and when it heads to the barn hang on. I’ve already unpacked and got my clothes ready to wash and this was after visiting with my dog and the new one. Wife’s bag is in the living room where I left it. 😀

102 Tedtam – thanx for sharing the experience.  I guess I’ll leave the broth in its nice cozy commercial containers instead of trying to dry it.  My ultimate goal is to get bullion powder that is low/no salt because (although my tastebuds LOVE the saltiness) I know the high sodium stuff doesn’t make my blood pressure happy.  And if the opportunity presents, I can always can any unsalted broth that I cook things in, which will give it extra flavor.
