Before I close for the night I have a confession. At the Men’s Bible Study today at the Chamber. I had an opportunity to thank my mentor Jack for his influence in my life and his solid advice concerning life’s struggles. He is getting up in years and my fear has been he would go to Glory before I had… Read more »

Since I’m here at the beach and my wife has already headed back to the farm today, I’m here by myself and I decided that Dawgs would be the thing for supper. FWIW; You have no idea what we’re going to do in Midland, but I’ll mention it in the morning.

Katfish @ 9:12

Awright! We have a Road Trip to Midland planned for October and I’ll make it a point to drop by. We’ll just take the high road up (I 20) and the low road back (I 10). We do have to make at least one pass through the Clear Lake area you know.

@ 7:55 pm  & 8:07 Your lists are woefully incomplete Gents UNTIL you’ve tried: Mary’s Cafe in the tiny town of Strawn TX – 8 miles north of I-20 on TX16 In a town of approx 800 – it says a lot (IMHO) when you need a reservation if you don’t want to stand in line! At Mary’s Cafe, the… Read more »

Buddy Guy is 86 years old and still living on the road a bunch of the time.

I noticed several vids of him performing in the last couple months in several places.

We went on a trip to Kalifornia in the early 00’s, oldest son was in his teens. We made a quick stop at a McDonalds one day and oldest son orders a Texas Homestyle Burger. Lol, lady just looked at him.

Texpat @ 7:51 pm

I do remember you mentioning that place. You are lucky to have a touch of home up there in Yankee land. The first time I went to Kalifornia, with NASA, we stopped at a “Texas Burger” place in Palmdale and the burger was fair to middling but definitely NOT a Texas burger.

Shannon @ 8:40 pm Au contraire mon ami. My parents are die hard beer drinkers and are totally into the craft beers. I’d be willing to say my parents are indeed beer snobs. They have a blast going to different breweries with friends to try new beers. My dad says the craft beer industry here reminds him of his time… Read more »

In my experience, hard core beer drinkers don’t do a lot of brand exploration. The craft beer thing always seemed to me to be form of satisfying recreation for the occasional (yet enthusiastic) beer drinker.

Ive tried a disappointing few. I’m sure there are some that I would like. Just never had the opportunity to search.

GJT So many of them are the IP(?) variety and that’s just too bitter for me. India Pale Ale (IPA) Yes they are indeed bitter. Yes you can even measure how bitter a beer is with the IBU. International Bitterness Units are a chemical measurement of the number of bittering compounds, specifically isomerized and oxidized alpha acids, polyphenols, and a… Read more »

Regarding craft beers – I think it’s a younger crowd thing, both our boys kept trying to get me on board with them but they gave up. So many of them are the IP(?) variety and that’s just too bitter for me. I don’t really have anything agin ‘em and I appreciate the fight the crafters won against Big Beer,… Read more »

Shannon, I just read the ingredients – and there’s two different types of peppers, may be the reason you like them so much – not sure about it’s effect on the “don’t keep too long”

Grumpy’s was the best CFS ever, sure miss it but it has been gone a very long time. Second best CFS was the Rodeway Inn’s restaurant on I10 and somewhere around Bunker Hill during the 70’s. It was open all night and several of us would go there after hitting the clubs, which may have influenced it being so high… Read more »

I have decided that one of the ingredients in those spicy HEB Charro beans that makes them so good is also the reason they do not keep long as leftovers in the fridge. Day or two max, in my opinion.

Of course, that doesn’t happen very often. 🙂

MJ42 – we saw some dark clouds in the north… so you got a lot closer to the weather than we did… I’m not going to say I’m jealous because we did get a nice shower for an hour or so last nite… (but I’m jealous) LOL

We had a small weather system come through about an hour ago. Noisy thunder, a few gusts of swirly wind, but nothing to challenge the wind storm we had last night. I was surprised to see that while I wasn’t paying attention, we did get a little more rain.

Shannon, get a large can of La Castono refried beans, a regular can of HEB Charro’s, a couple of pieces of bacon (with grease) and one diced onion. Cook slow for an hour or so and you will not believe how good it is. Your tongue will beat you about the eyebrows trying to get at it. HE!! I can… Read more »

SuperDave, I DOOOO understand… I’ve been accused of never going the same way ONCE… (well, except for to our house – there’s only one way into the subdivision… And I wish Sam’s would bring back the Chicken Kiev ones… but broccoli-cheese and cordon bleu are the only ones we ever find around here anymore….

bsue, the Sam’s Club Stuffed Chicken Breasts are very good, I used to get them all the time when I was cooking for the kids. I’ve picked up a couple in the 3 years we’ve been back home but since it’s so dang far to the closest Sam’s I don’t like getting cold or frozen stuff. If I do, I… Read more »

I’ve eaten best CFS on the planet.

For six months, I actually cooked the best CFS on the planet, when I worked part time in a boutique restaurant kitchen on the square in Bellville.

Now?

SD

I’ve never even tried the Barracho.

I needn’t buy anything besides the Charro ever again.

You may recall I gave up on pinto beans around the time I gave up on Chicken Fried Steak.

Thought I was going to die of boredom.

The Spicy Charros changed my life. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Didnt happen, though.

My lovely wife majored in biochemical engineering with the intent to become a doctor. She even took the MCAT. Through the years more than one doctor or nurse have asked her if she were a doctor simply by the questions she asked.

MHarper builder grade fireplaces are notoriously inefficient which means 70 plus percent of the heat just goes up the flue. It may look pretty but that is about it. The stove I bought is close to 90% efficient which means the wood will burn hotter and longer. This means you can put logs in at 10 pm and you will… Read more »

Dr didn’t know my professional history As a patient, Fay was reluctant to, up front, tell her background. Not me. I made sure, subtle-y, every one of those young, stranger nurses knew she had been a nurse for fifty years. You, of course, wouldn’t be surprised how much that helped her get a better class of care. They loved to… Read more »
