Weekend Old Tech Open Comments

I recently found this sweet lady on her “Our Half Acre Homestead” Youtube channel. Just a sweet, down-to-earth woman.

I think she makes a lot of good points in this video.

Well good morning gang.  WIP is not up yet over at Power Line, but I’m up.  I’ve been getting up around 5AM local time here lately for reasons that I’ll get around to talking about later, and it seems to be working out well for me.  Big holiday weekend it looks like, but nothing on the schedule out here.  Just like every other weekend, except I do think we are having fireworks at the Mill Pond Park tonight.  I can watch those from my front porch so I don’t have to drive after dark.

You all have a good day, and I’ll try t remember to post the WIP as soon as it shows up.  And Katfish, have a safe trip. More later.

I mentioned that I got the fence line cleared up down by the fancy electronic gate. I started clearing all the invasive privet hedge and Bradford Pears under the pecan tree. They went all the way to the fence and were reaching over it. After I had the side near the fence cleared I decided it was more important to clear up the fence, it had a lot of weeds, vines and a few small trees growing along the road. I cut it with my Stihl Gasoline powered weed sling (think weed eater with a Scythe blade) I raked it up and cut the small sweetgums and pines. After a few days so I can see what is alive I’ll spray the whole area and level out the hump near the ditch and plant grass. Oh and my Kubota tractor mounted wood chipper ate up all the trees, turned them into mulch.

What did I miss regarding Trump, Grand Theft Auto?

    Short version:
Low level secretary testified to Kangaroo Committee that Trump tried to grab steering wheel and force Secret Service driver to take him to Capitol on Jan. 6.

Story immediately debunked by agent involved.

FWIW; I have NO USE for Niel Cavuto, the never Trumper. He got fighting mad about Trump’s administration instructing the VA to give hydroxychloroquine to the patients. The news media falsely reported that the deaths at the VA were cased by this drug instead of the fact that it was given to patients that were already dying. Niel Cavuto went off on a screed about this even though he didn’t know the facts. (Didn’t WANT to know the facts). That was when I knew that the Bastard was a never Trumper. SO,..to make a short story long, Cavuto was interviewing Chuck Grassley and he was saying that the Republicans didn’t have a chance to cross examine the nut job that said Trump reached through the glass partition and grabbed the Secret Service driver. Cavuto cut him off when he tried to point out that Nasty Nancy wouldn’t allow any REAL Republicans on the panel and added well there were two republicans on the committee!

Thank you sir. I don’t know all the proper terms but they saw the previous aneurism repair at the arorta (?) where the two branches meet going down the legs had gotten bigger and was leaking. At the time he said that repair was not an emergency and could be scheduled later on but he needed to find the blockage and remove it, which he did. Now, after seeing how big the blockage was he feels like the leak and swelling is due to pressure and possibly will take care of itself, will just need to monitor.

No scars except the incision at my left groin where he went in and did the work internally. Amazing stuff.

Bradford pear trees are highly invasive. This is why they aren’t banned in Indiana.

Invasive plants are wreaking havoc on Indiana’s ecosystems.

It’s why last year the state put the Terrestrial Plants Rule into effect, banning 44 species of them from the landscaping trade. But experts say there were a few glaring plants left off the list.

Most notably? The Bradford pear tree.

This plant, favored by landscapers for its beautiful white blooms and stately appearance, is one of Indiana’s most criminal invasive species.

Bradford pear trees, also called Callery pears, bloom earlier in the year, giving them an advantage over native species and allowing them to take their resources for its own. The trees have become so ubiquitous in Indiana that in some places you can find entire fields of them.

But while they are bad for the environment, they’re also economically valuable for growers in the state. Very valuable. An analysis done in recent years found the tree earned nursery owners millions of dollars each year.

That’s why they didn’t make it on the terrestrial plant rule.

Research indicates that the landscaping trade is responsible for just over 80% of invasive species growing in Indiana.

And the Bradford pear, with its beautiful springtime white flowers and brilliant fall foliage, is a favorite among Hoosiers.

Those flowers are part of the problem. They bring with them small fruits, which birds eat, and fly and deposit the seeds elsewhere. Because Bradford pear trees bloom so much earlier in the year than native trees, they drop their seeds when there aren’t native competitors. Then, they take over.

“I’ve seen entire meadows transformed into a monoculture of Bradford pears,” said Ethan Olson, director of native landscapes at local nonprofit Keep Indianapolis Beautiful.

In the long term this shakes up Indiana’s ecosystems, said Heather Reynolds, a biology professor at Indiana University and member of the Indiana Invasive Species Council. When the tree chokes out native plants, those plants can’t support native insects and pollinators. Those insects, in turn, can’t support the wildlife that eats them, and the impacts snowball from there.

“Loss of biodiversity has implications all the way up the food chain,” Reynolds said. “If you plant a monoculture of Bradford pear, you’re ultimately destroying the habitat and food sources for the bird species you may love.”

    *COVID NEWS AND COMMENTARY*

Florida’s Surgeon General Joe Ladapo responded to some lame criticism from the House Covid Oversight Committee yesterday in a letter released to the public. Apparently the House Oversight Committee wanted to meet on June 28th, after which the members said a bunch of dumb stuff about Florida being reckless and so forth. So Dr. Ladapo wrote them a letter.

After clarifying that Florida has NEVER interfered with doctors’ ability to order jabs for small children, he explained why Florida recommends AGAINST vaccinating kids under 5, based on THE SCIENCE:

The House Committee responded to Ladapo’s letter later in the day, doubling down,
accusing Florida of preventing people from getting jabs, and calling Florida “dangerous” and “anti-vax:”

Note the Committee did not respond to Dr. Ladapo’s invitation to produce FACTS and SCIENCE. They just want you to trust them. I guess the Committee knows better than SURGEON GENERAL Ladapo about what kinds of experimental drugs to inject into your baby, who hasn’t learned English yet and can’t tell you whether he’s having chest pains or not. Makes sense.

House Covid Oversight Committee Chair James Clyburn, 81:

Clyburn is running for re-election in November, despite that he’ll be 82, and despite the fact that he’s hogged the same South Carolina seat for thirty years now. Plucky Republican lawyer Duke Buckner has agreed to run against the Democrat heavyweight. Watch this short video on Duke’s website: https://www.voteforduke.com/bio.

    #UnofficialMultiplier

    ************************

Some members of the FDA’s vaccine advisory panel meeting expressed concerns that if they approved the drugs for kids, those approvals would soon morph into mandates. Donkey-like corporate media experts brayed in hilarity at those naive concerns. But of course, it’s already happened.

New York City’s Mayor Eric Adams announced this week he plans to mandate covid vaccines for school kids.

In response to a reporter’s question, Adams admitted that yes, the vaccines WILL be mandatory, and that he and his team are still “meeting and discussing” and trying to come up with the “best way to do it.”

Well. The best way to do it is to NOT do it. But I doubt they’re considering that option.

I predict even more population shifts between New York City and Florida.
NYC people, you’re welcome to move here but please: first stop voting for psychopathic, anti-scientific morons.

    *******************

Meanwhile, Governor DeSantis announced new civics curriculum in Florida that instead of running down the U.S., celebrates our country and teaches kids about how government actually works. Watch this video from a school teacher happy about the new curriculum, especially when he talks about where ‘rights’ come from, and how he handles sharing his political opinions in class:

Civics education is critical to enable free citizens to govern themselves. For some reason, it seems like some people prefer kids don’t know anything at all about how the government works. Weird.

    ******************************

Earlier this month, Florida’s Agency for Healthcare Administration issued a press release announcing Florida is withdrawing Medicare support for “transitioning” drugs and surgeries for kids, based on THE SCIENCE:

Oddly, the corporate media does not seem so interested in “the science” when it comes to these topics.

Later, in a live on-air interview, a Biden official explained WHY ordinary Americans should sacrifice for Ukraine: it’s for the “future of the Liberal World Order.” I am not making that up.

The only thing is left out was the word, “new,”
which I think is implied anyway. Here’s the transcript:

CNN: “What do you say to those families that say, ‘listen, we can’t afford to pay $4.85 a gallon for months, if not years?’”

BIDEN ADVISOR BRIAN DEESE: “This is about the future of the Liberal World Order and we have to stand firm.”

Down under, in one of the most jabbed countries in the world (93%), covid is back. Again. A telling article from the Sydney news yesterday was headlined, “Top Doctor Signals Return of Masks as Covid Cases Surge.”

    How could this happen?

Australia, on the other side of the globe, is in its winter now. It is having a massive winter wave, and vaccines apparently aren’t stopping it at all. Queensland alone recorded 5,313 new cases yesterday and six deaths. Queensland’s chief health officer Dr. John Gerrard said new covid strains are evading natural immunity and the vaccines.

Who could have seen this coming?

In fact, at fifty deaths per day, covid is now the LEADING cause of death in Australia
    — even above heart disease and cancer — and the trend is going UP. You might say it’s skyrocketing. The experts, baffled.

It’s bad, and it’s getting worse. The top covid doc explained the current wave of covid cases were going to “get significantly worse in the coming weeks.” A dark winter!

It’s not just Australia. Britain has it now, too.

The UK’s Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, refused to rule out another lockdown yesterday as covid cases also surged in Britain. Apparently, one in 40 people – 1.3 million folks – had the virus in Britain LAST WEEK. Speaking in an interview at the NATO summit in Madrid, Johnson allowed that, while a new lockdown was unlikely, it would be “irresponsible” to rule it out.

Wait. I thought we’ve established now that lockdowns failed to stop the spread. Did the lockdowns work, or not? Why is Johnson even considering lockdowns? What am I missing?

But unlike Australia, Britain is in its summer. What’s going on in Australia and Britain?

On Wednesday, the U.S. formally invited Finland and Sweden to join NATO. Vladimir Putin responded yesterday saying that Russia and Belarus would accelerate “unification,” and threatening to respond in kind if military infrastructure or NATO troops are placed in the two Nordic countries.

Meanwhile, NATO began polishing its rubber stamp.

    ***********************

It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to find any corporate media reports about what Russian government officials are saying about pretty much anything.
I get that they lie a lot, but do they lie any more often than our own government officials do? Just like the Russians living in the old Soviet Union, Americans are getting pretty good at this point at automatically distrusting whatever narrative the government is peddling today.

I say let us hear it all, and then WE will decide. We’re adults and free citizens living in a democracy. We don’t need the government to screen out potentially dangerous information.

Anyway, because they ARE screening out the Russians, I have to rely on non-traditional sources. My promise to you is I test them every way I can, to determine reliability, but I cannot guarantee anything.

The information for this update comes from the guy who first figured out that the Russians were targeting US Biolabs in Ukraine by noticing the patterns of artillery fire on the map. That was back when the US government stupidly denied there even were any biolabs in Ukraine, even though the information was easily found on archives of our Ukrainian embassy’s website.

Ultimately Tucker carried the story, and the government and corporate media were forced to admit the biolabs exist. But only for peaceful purposes, of course.

According to the same guy who figured out the Russians were shooting up U.S. biolabs in Ukraine, Irina Yarovaya, Deputy Chairwoman of Russia’s State Duma, reported on US biolabs this week to the Duma (Russia’s congress). The first and most significant thing she said was that Russia is building a case, a “dossier,” against the U.S., allegedly featuring heavy Democrat involvement in illegal weapons research, and plans to release the report in August. Right before midterms.

Specifically, Yarovaya said “The Commission is forming a dossier in order to systematize cases of criminal activities and qualify them and will be ready to present a final report in Autumn.”

Hahahahaha! That’s the same month that the Democrats plan to release the novel version of their January 6th show! Everybody’s trying to influence the elections.

She also told the Duma that the Ukraine war — the “special military operation” — was justified to put a stop to the “Pentagon’s dangerous military-biological activities on the territory of Ukraine.” She reported that Russian investigators found specific evidence in Ukraine of illegal U.S. bioweapons research, including one colorful project where counterfeit bills would be intentionally “infected with a very dangerous, highly pathogenic strain of Asian tuberculosis.”

    I wish I could say I didn’t believe a word of it.

She also reported that the “veterinary lab” in Mariupol, Ukraine, was discovered to be hosting super-non-veterinary germs like “typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, perfringens. And 124 other seized strains are being studied by specialists.”

(FYI, clostridium perfringens is one of the most common causes of human food poisoning in the U.S.)

Yarovaya also claimed Russian investigators discovered “documents that were seized by the Ministry of Defense showing that dangerous experiments were conducted on Ukrainian servicemen,” allegedly killing them within 72 hours.

The U.S. government is responding to these allegations by canceling Russia. Maybe it’s no wonder the Biden Administration is spending so much effort and energy on its “disinformation board.” We thought it was all about covid and ivermectin and stuff. But what if it was REALLY about Ukraine the whole time? Maybe what they are really doing is trying to get ahead of Russian disclosures about their dirty little science experiments?

Remember bizarro-world Mary Poppins, the kooky young lady they first hired to run their new cancellation board? Her super-thin resume included working for that failed technopop actor Zelenskyy — in Ukraine. Get it?

Maybe her hiring wasn’t such a bizarre choice after all? Maybe it’s not a disinformation board at all. Maybe it’s really an anti-biolab information board.

Anyway. You know what would be a whole lot easier and more effective than creating a giant disinformation board to cancel Russia to stop Americans from wrongthinking? OPEN THE BOOKS.
Just release all the information about those peaceful, non-military, veterinary labs we’ve built in poor countries to keep everyone safe. Be transparent.

Someone once said the truth would set you free, or something like that. Try it, just once. See if it works.

    ********************

And finally, I hope you all have a patriotic and joyful Fourth of July!

Have a super Saturday, and I’ll see you in a week! (But maybe I’ll sneak in a little something for you here and there, you never know.) Be well.

Did the 1973 Roe v Wade ruling from the Supreme Court ‘repeal’ existing bans on abortion in state statutes? Not in Texas, anyway. The state supreme court last night reversed an injunction by a Harris County judge that had blocked enforcement of the 1925 statute banning abortions.

That is a curious argument in the first place. The decision in Roe may have looked like legislation, but it wasn’t, and it didn’t remove a single statute in any state. A Supreme Court decision can block enforcement of a statute, but it can’t repeal it. It takes an act of the legislature and the signature of a governor to repeal a statute (or Congress and the president for federal statutes). The current court would likely scoff at the idea of a statute-repealing impact from its decisions, especially at the state level.

    /SNIP

Why did the Texas legislature pass a new “trigger” law with far more extensive penalties if the 1925 statute was enforceable immediately? Either the legislature didn’t do much research on existing statute or felt that the political benefit outweighed enforcement clarity. Probably, it’s a mix of both, but even then it’s still going to come down to either the existing statute from 1925 is immediately enforceable or the new ban with longer prison sentences will take effect less than three weeks after the Tuesday deadline for more filings. Even if the plaintiffs win an argument that the trigger law essentially replaced the 1925 statute, it buys them a handful of days for operating abortion clinics in Texas. It might well be that both statutes will be legitimate, which means that the legislature will have to clean up any conflicts between them.

I’ve got to say that God did a pretty good thing when He got my Facebook account suspended. I’ve been in a bit of a panic about promoting the YouTube channel without being able to post in the Facebook Groups I’d been posting in. But in the nine days since I’ve been posting them in a Bushcraft Forum and couple Groups on Reddit and MeWe and seen a pretty substantial increase in Subscribers and Viewing time. I’ve picked up 100 viewing hours in that time, about five times the average I was getting before. I still need about 3400 hours to get to monetization, but its starting to look like I might hit that number before this time next year.

If you people need bulk herbs, spices, herbal medicinal blends & components, there’s a place right across the street from ex-Canino’s that has all of them.

Granel’s Bodega. Nice place, has a/c, prices seem not too bad, maybe a little high, but you’re usually buying such small amounts.

Speaking of spices, I’m drying a bunch of Genovese basil to add my jar. I put up the little bit of Thai basil that I cut last week. And the stevia. I’m gradally adding to my stores. Last night I did 8 pint-and-a-half jars, 4 of chili with some discounted “best by” stew meat I found at the store, and 4 of chicken. I reserved some chili for Hubby rather than canning it, and he said it was way too hot. I told him that canning sometimes messes with seasonings, so we need to pull a canned jar and try tasting it so I’ll know if I need to reduce the amount of chili powder from the recipe.

I finished filling my first pint jar of tomato powder. It still amazes me, the power of Fred. I figger that pint jar must have at least a couple dozen tomatoes in it.

I just put the following jars of dried goods upstairs in storage: eggs, strawberries, green bell peppers, tomatoes.

Hubby was very happy when I sent him pics. He likes that they don’t take up a lot of room. I pointed out that they are lighter than canned goods, as well, and are the perfect foods for camping, traveling, or bugging out. He agreed.

I harvested some cucumbers this morning, so I think I have enough to do a few pints of pickles today.

I never thought I’d love seeing rows of jars like I do, but I get a great deal of satisfaction, knowing that Hubby and I will have some – hopefully at some point, enough – food to ride out what I think is coming. And if I’m wrong about what’s coming, well, then, we’ll be comfortably set for any hurricane that comes out way.

Is the farmer’s market still there, but not Canino’s any more?

I was thinking about making some trips there, but if that market is closed….

Are there other markets nearby where I can get reasonably priced veggies? I always went to the back of Canino’s and tried to speak to the Spanish folks there for their produce. I remember one December, when I was looking for bell peppers for lasagna, and I scored a big box of ’em for $10. Yeah, I had to sort them and trim off some bad spots, but for ten bucks it was well, well worth it.

The story is that Gene Roddenberry pitched Star Trek to the suits at the network as “Wagon Train in space”. The reason I love Firefly is that its basically the same concept but with cooler guns, bigger badasses, quirkier stories, and more interesting main characters.

Liberal comedian Wanda Sykes has no problem voicing her contempt for those who dare to think differently than her, as witnessed this week on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

You make your own limoncello liqueur???

A lot easier than making beer, which is pretty easy.

I’ll put the actual recipe here when I finally make it. It’s basically lemon-flavored ethanol right now. Needs a LOT of diluting and some sweetening though.

So far we have the zest of lemons and enough ethanol (e.g., Everclear) to cover. Let sit for at least a month; more does not hurt – not like anything is gonna go bad in there.

That’s where I am now. Current proof is 195. Need to add enough water to get it to around 40-50 proof (20-25%) ethanol and sugar to make it taste right. This is what it looks like now:

Note how pale the lemon peel is. The lemon oil is soluble in ethanol, so the oil moves from the peel to solution. Later on we’ll see that the peel will now feel “crispy” – stiff and dry. The liquid will be transparent bright yellow. As soon as you add a little bit of water, it’ll form a colloid and immediately get very cloudy and pale yellow.

“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”” — Jeremiah 17:9-10  . Powered by BibleGateway.com.

Jeremiah is called the Weeping Profit and rightfully so because he was crying out to his people to repent of their ways.
Their deeds and hardened hearts were going to get them carried off into captivity and Jeremiah was sounding the alarm but no one was listening.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer did the same thing during the Hitler Era.

Something readily available is Quaker oats. You could carefully toast some oats in a big black iron skillet, hot, dry, stirring constantly, and get an interesting flavor component that would be moving in the direction of the stout.
If you blacken the oats they are going to be acrid and unpleasant.

    From the Epoch Times:

‘Doomsday Document’ Predicted Food Shortages Two Years Ago

It was called ‘Reset the Table’ and it’s all about the upcoming food shortages, including how they plan to wipe out the meat industry in favor of fake foods. Are you prepared? Find out what you must do to survive against the upcoming onslaught.

    STORY AT-A-GLANCE

*We’re told looming food shortages are primarily the result of climate change and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Yet in July 2020, The Rockefeller Foundation had already predicted it, and was calling for a revamp of the food system as a whole to address it

*“Reset the Table: Meeting the Moment to Transform the U.S. Food System,” published by The Rockefeller Foundation July 28, 2020, describes how the COVID pandemic caused “a hunger and nutrition crisis” in the U.S. “unlike any this country has seen in generations”

*According to The Rockefeller Foundation, the pandemic revealed deep problems in the U.S. food system that need to be “reset.” “Reset the Table” was published just one month after the World Economic Forum (WEF) officially announced its plans for a “Great Reset,” and many of the contributors to the Foundation’s paper are WEF members

*While the report stresses the need for “healthy diets” and “sustainable” food production, the words “natural,” “organic” or “grass fed” are absent, so that’s not what they’re referring to

*The WEF has, for years, promoted the idea that insects should be recognized as a healthy, sustainable protein alternative that can save the environment and solve world hunger

In the foreword,3 Rockefeller Foundation president Dr. Rajiv Shah also stresses that “a comprehensive playbook” to address the food system would also need to address other issues, “such as living wages, housing and transportation,” and that “all of us” — meaning the self-proclaimed designers of the future — “need to write that playbook together over the coming year.”
    Problem, Reaction, Solution

There are interesting tidbits in this document. For example, on page 3, it states that “94% of deaths from COVID-19 among individuals with an underlying condition, the majority of which are diet-related.” This is surprising, considering diet and nutrition were essentially absent from public discussions and reporting about the infection.

While it’s tempting to view this document as a sign of sanity, if you’ve looked into the WEF’s Great Reset plan, you’ll notice that “Reset the Table” is just another cog in a wheel that is intended to run us over. As noted by ThreadsIrish:4

“The document is very much framed in the Hegelian dialectic of problem, reaction, solution. Here is the problem that they have created (COVID) and now they want to implement the solution (Transforming the global food supply). Naturally this is all ties into lands being destroyed, climate change and trying to move people back into smart cities (Page 5). Surprise, surprise.”

“Reset the Table” basically describes how they intend to seize control of the food supply and the supply chain under the guise of “equity,” “fairness” and “environmental protection.” One key to this enterprise is data collection. They want to collect data on everyone’s spending and eating habits. Expanding broadband access is part of that.

“Forty-two million Americans lack broadband access that is essential to shifts to online enrollment, online purchasing of food, direct farm-to-consumer purchasing, telemedicine, teleconsultations, as well as education, finance, and employment,” the paper5 notes, adding, “This is a fundamental resiliency and equity gap, and we need to close it, urgently.”

As you can see from these paragraphs alone, they want everything to shift into an online environment, including education, medicine and the buying of food. This, of course, makes everything you do far easier to monitor and track. Another key is to make sure global WEF partners in multiple sectors work in tandem to form a “collaborative advocacy movement.”

A third key to success is “changes to policies, practices and norms,” and those changes are “numerous.” The end goal is to centralize control of the food supply into a single executive office, which is right in line with the idea of a “one world government.” As WEF member Henry Kissinger once said, “Who controls the food supply controls the people; who controls the energy can control whole continents; who controls money can control the world.”

As for the “healthy and protective diets” the Foundation is calling for, we’ve already been told what that is. For the past several years, the WEF has been promoting the idea that we should get used to eating weeds and bugs and drinking reclaimed sewage.

As noted in a July 2021 WEF article titled, “Why We Need to Give Insects the Role They Deserve in Our Food Systems”:6

“By 2050, the world’s food supply will need to feed another 2 billion people. Insect farming for food and animal feed could offer an environmentally friendly solution to the impending food crisis …

Thanks to new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), we are at a turning point and finally able to industrialize the breeding of insects in a contained environment. Insect breeding is a data centric agro-industry with a lot of commonalities with precision agriculture.

Several indoor agriculture start-ups have emerged … Ÿnsect, for example, with more than 300 technology patents and completely unique AI-driven agricultural processes, is building the first fully automated vertical insect farm in the world, able to produce 100,000 tonnes of insect products a year.”

According to this article, insects are “a credible and efficient alternative protein source requiring fewer resources than conventional breeding,” and “a healthy ingredient” that is highly digestible and particularly suitable for senior nutrition. Insect farming is also far less expensive, requiring few natural resources such as water and could reduce agricultural pollution by nearly 99%.

    …and there’s more.

  94. Tedtam Avatar

    And this:

At present, all data point to severe food shortages, and while the looming shortages are blamed on everything from climate change and COVID to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the fact is that WEF allies, such as the Rockefeller Foundation, have published documents and held fictional exercises, in advance, detailing everything we’re currently facing.

So, while they pretend to be modern-day prophets, with answers spilling out as fast as problems appear, it’s rather easy to make predictions when you’re working an intentional plan, and quite simple to fashion solutions at record speed when you created the problems as a means to an end in the first place.

All that is to say, do not doubt that food shortages and famine are coming. It’s inevitable because it’s intentional. The same goes for energy shortages. They’re intent on bringing us into the “green new deal” (as it’s part of The Great Reset) even though large-scale alternatives to oil, gas and nuclear power are nonexistent.

Here I am up and about and haven’t checked in yet this morning.  What’s up with that?  I seem to have 2 fawns this year that are staying around, one born about a week ahead of the other so is slightly larger.  The two have started running around together, presumably with permission of their mothers, and they are quite a sight.  They are still very small and run around out there kicking and bucking but they look like small dogs.  They are extremely fast runners, but they can’t jump over a 4′ fence yet.  I leave my gate open for them to come and go in my back yard until they get large enough to jump.

Somebody has been sampling some of my garden plants.  One of the tops was eaten out of a pepper plant, so that may have been enough to get them to move on.  Hoofprint left behind in the mud looked suspiciously like a doe.

Tomato plants just look great, all deep green and full, and not a sign of a tomato anywhere.  I guess it was just too hot for any fruit to set this year.  Next year I guess I’ll go back to cherry tomatoes which seem to be able to handle the heat better.  Also I ordered a cheap ass greenhouse from Amazon which should show up next week.  I’ll probably put it up this fall or early winter and start early on tomatoes again.  Remember, only 2 things that money can’t buy – true love and home grown tomatoes.  Have a great day.

Thanks for the very good link to the Star Link overview.

That is the info I have been looking for.

Beating the heat, we got the final repair done from the Big Freeze.

I don’t think we will ever know the monetary impact of the Big Feeze and the subsequent death toll.

My Plumber friend was called out on many catastrophic pipe failures and in some cases the cost to repair was going exceed the value of the house.

My personal opinion it was a travesty the way our Politicians deflected blame and then proceeded to bury it.

ERCOT is still alive and well with business as usual.

I have just adopted the attitude.

To only rely on my own proactive measures and nothing else.

    Canning as an example!

Morning, chickadees. I predict that Houston will be a-roil’d with fireworks TONIGHT. The denizens of Houston won’t be able to restrain themselves until the 4th.

I had a good sudoku this morning, nothing really difficult but just so much methodical effort that it took me over an hour to complete it. Now I wasn’t leaning over the puzzle every second of that time — all of the cats were voracious this morning, so I was having to go back for more food for all of them, about every 5 minutes, it seemed. Finally they all conked out, purring themselves happily to sleep.

Well, I observe that there has been some improvement, overall, in the more recent circumstances of denizens of  The Couch. While we are still rattled by the sudden loss of Hammy, followed by Shannon’s loss of Fay, and the prolonged hospitalizations of TexMo and Tim — well, thankfully, life has settled down a bit.

Just got back from mass and Kroger. Two briskets of caring quality (pickin’s were scarce, good price one the beef) and 5 boxes of butter later, in home. The butter was$2.49 with the digital app. That is THE worst so I’ve seen in a long time, not intuitive at all. When I tried to follow instructions it told me I couldn’t do what it was telling me to do. Sucks. Big time. The cashier manager had to do it for me.

    Good Afternoon, Hamsters,

Not even a spit of rain so far today, and the weather guessers have no encouraging news for the folk who live SW of Houston. All of the rain will stay around Houston and down to the Galveston coast and then move east into LA and then on to the Florida panhandle.

On a brighter note, our small deer herd has decided we have a prime place to graze in our pastures and the yards, and water in the stock tank, though that has some algae in it. Our fountain on the back patio gets lots of attention from the wildlife, enough that spouse has to fill it every other day. Who knows how many critters show up overnight to drink.

The mom with twins brings them around the house for a treat, jasmine groundcover that we have an abundance of. She is still nursing them, as they are less than a month old. Her udder is prominent and obviously well used. Then there is the lone deer with one fawn that seems to show up at different times than the twins’ mom. Having the deer this close to a window makes for entertaining viewing for Purrscilla. In some ways she seems to regard the deer parade as entertainment for her.

A mild breeze ruffles Old Glory on the front porch, and the scene as seen from inside can fool you into thinking it looks like a pleasant summer day, ‘cept it is 94 and 53% humidity. Better than 100 or over, for sure.

I spent 1 hr and 15 mins out front, sweeping and sacking up debris along the curb. 90% of it was freshly fallen brown magnolia leaves. Another 9% was older, crushed-to-powder magnolia leaves. Then 1% pine straw. The USPS jeep drives right up against my curb, when it can, to get to my mailbox. Plus any work detail on my block usually has at least one truck parked somewhere on my curb. Crisp and crushable, that magnolia+ mess all got compressed to 2 30-gallon bags, which fits into my CoH black bin.

I want to get into the garden this evening, too. I think I can get the jars out of the canner in time to inject my squash. That takes about an hour or so. Hopefully the bees will have gone home by then. I’ve been stung twice. Never knew it ’til after. Ninja bees.

No relief in sight for cooler temps or for rain. Spouse has been investing in soaker hoses to take care of the plants on the far side of the driveway that the sprinklers can’t reach. We did have a considerable length of soaker hose left over from years ago, but time and heat sort of made it too leaky, which was ok for some spots but not ok for others along the driveway. The idea was water for the plants and not big puddles on the driveway. Those evaporated with no help at all for the plants. The sprinklers come on in the wee hours of the morning and shut off by sunup.

The last thing you want is to be wasting water in daylight.

Tried a slight variation on the Wagonburner steak. Instead of sous vide, I seasoned the ribeyes with S&P and put in the smoker on 165F. When they got to just past 100F, I took them off to let them rest and cranked grill to 450F. Grilled them to the rare side of med-rare.

Kinda tasty, I must say. The smoke was an interesting difference.

Speaking of watering, I did some hand-watering on the shadiest side of the front yard, and have a swiveling water thrower doing the other side now. I also wanted to get a sprinkler going in the back yard, but the patio is occupied by birds and squirrels right now, so I’ll wait a bit.

My schedule has committed suicide this weekend. I wasn’t hungry at 8 pm last night, so I just had a small green salad with tomatoes and cheese strips added. My Sunday breakfast was later even than usual — got up late and did the sudoku before I had my usual cottage cheese, fruit, oat cereal for a late breakfast. Didn’t do a lunch and had a short nap, sort of hoping to get my schedule back on the tracks by tomorrow. I’ll find a meat and 2 veg in the fridge and turn it into a supper here in a bit.

  136. Tedtam Avatar

I don’t think I’m going to garden this evening. I’m tired – didn’t get to sleep ’til late last night and it’s catching up with me.

I’m about to turn off the canner, and the pressure cooker is cooling down. I think I’m going to let the ropa cook on low overnight and deal with it in the morning.

The ghee I was making got delayed because I didn’t realize that the small crock pot had gotten unplugged when I moved it out of the way. Lost three hours. /sigh

  137. bsue54 Avatar

Well, at least you did get some things accomplished, or well on their way.  We went on a wild goose chase to get more quart canning jars from a store that’s website showed they were available for pick up – all we found was 1/2 pints and pints – both of which we have quite a few… So tomorrow, I’m putting something in the crockpot to par cook, while we go on a quart jar scavenger hunt.

They post what they’ve found and what they need to help get a lost or abandoned pet taken care of.

Then another big chunk of time lately is my discovery (thx EG) of the large amount of airplane disaster videos available on FB.

It has occurred to me that I like the FB score system where you can rate what you thought about the post you just read or looked at. The only way to do that on The Couch is to write a response.

Good morning once again gang from the hinterlands of central Texas.  There are places out here that just don’t change much over time, and this is one of them.  Looking like the TOK is still closed for the holiday, so I hope that the hard working staff of that place has an enjoyable day off.  I completed reading a lengthy book called “Never” by Ken Follett which checked off all the proper boxes, but since there was a female President along with a couple of other strong female ledes, as you would expect the whole thing winds up with an unhappy ending.  Not trying to be a spoiler, and I actually enjoyed the book, so if you get the chance, take a look at it.  Will deliver it back to the library tomorrow and try to find something else.

#155 – I’m glad that you are enjoying the airplane videos.  As I previously mentioned, most of those are available on you Tube and you may be able to enjoy them on the big screen TV if the computer monitor is too small.  Once you get through some of them, you may find that if you look around, there are several other videos discussing the same accident, which may further your interest and understanding of what went wrong and what efforts were made to prevent future occurrences.  I tend to look at the “cause” side of the equation rather than the drama and human interest side, but there are some good stories out there.

I’m gonna get stirring about out here now.  You all have a great day, and I’ll report back in if anything interesting happens.  More later.

Of all the videos that you have watched, was there ever any communication to the Airport Control Tower from passengers detailing the events unfolding from their cell phones?

Flight 93 over Pennsylvania had a spectacular conversation via Passengers and The Control Tower in 9/11/2001 on a Cell Phone!

Cell phone use in aircraft is generally prohibited since the altitude works like a super high antenna and the radio signals would cross over several towers, create interference, and the like.  Modern airplane navigation systems connect through the GPS satellites, but they do not allow for internet or voice communications.  On board navigation computers are updated manually through a internal bluetooth connection with a computer or with a plug in thumb drive or some such device.  The navigation and cockpit  instruments are not able to access the internet directly due to hacking concerns which could lead to disastrous results.  Now passenger internet service is available, but the aircraft systems cannot access it.  Obviously in the 911 case, the use of cell phones was a unique circumstance, but normally any cell phone clearances or flight plan filing is done on the phone prior to take off at uncontrolled airports – otherwise, voice communications are limited to radio.  I would expect that generally speaking, any passenger who called the control tower on a cell phone would be met at the gate by federal agents.  If I recall, the flight 93 people were talking to airline personnel and not air traffic controllers, and there would be no reason for them to do so since they did not have control of the aircraft anyway.  So in summary, despite the numerous communication devices available to aircraft and the operators, they are not able to directly access the internet, and tow way communication continues to be the exclusive province of radio systems.

FWIW, the aircraft bands are just above the commercial FM broadcast radio bands, beginning about about 108Mhz to around 135Mhz – brother Dave would know a lot more about that than I do.

“Return to Tradition” on Youtube has an awesome letter from a canceled priest to Pachapapa.

It was an open letter, and several outlets have picked it up. This priest calls out the pope for his doctrinal errors and hypocrisy.

To see this in print, and put directly to the pope hisself, is awesome. And, as Anthony Stein says, he was probably holding back.

Won’t make a difference, but I hope it wakes up a few folks who may not be aware or may not care about the rot in the Vatican.
