Check out this Bad Boy, I spotted him on Bill Deloney Road, near the Little Claybank. He wasn’t real big, about 4′ but he was real fat like a Water Moccasin. He only had 4 Rattles and a button, you probably can’t see them but they are right beside his head on the right. Oh and you didn’t know, this is an Eastern Diamondback Rattler. This is the second one that I’ve seen on that road this week.

How about that? The Homestead Exemption kicked in this year and the Taxes on the Ranch House went from $668 to $168, I like it.
BTW; this house and it’s 16 acres are worth a little more than the Farm House and it’s 40 acres and without an Exemption those taxes went from $485 to $514.

Morning gang. Another bright sunny day developing out here, but at least the crippling heat is gone, and temps should be very pleasant today. I may get outside and try a little yard work. Also, it’s college football Saturday, so I’ll go over and check out some to today’s games to see what might be worth listening to.

I found this little thing from Power Line late last night, and I posted it with the promise to bring it forward today. The intellectually curious may get started on this and discover they have spent way too much time on it before they know what happened. Here’s last night’s post: OK, it’s too late Friday to do any serious analysis, so I’ll probably bring this thing forward tomorrow. I started looking into it and decided pretty quickly I’d better shut it down or I’d be up all night sorting out the data. Who knew that you could have fun with charts. Check it out. https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2020/10/the-geek-in-pictures.php

I’m off to check for some pictures today. Meanwhile, you all have a great day, and more later.

The always lovely Evita Duffy reports at The Federalist.

Nearly three-quarters of Americans hate modern architecture.

These findings come in light of the possibility of a Trump administration executive order, appropriately named Make Federal Buildings Beautiful Again, that would require that new office buildings in Washington, D.C. be classical in design. Among other things, the order would revise the 1962 “Guiding Principles for Federal Architecture,” which forced modernism to be the official government building style. In response to the leak of the potential order, a bill entitled the “Democracy in Design Act” was proposed by House Democrats to overturn it.

However, based on the study, it appears Trump’s potential executive order would be happily received by a majority of Americans, with traditional architecture the clear winner for all demographic groups, including sex, age, geographic region, household income, education, race/ethnicity, and political party affiliations.
If you don’t remember Evita, daughter of former congressman Sean Duffy, this tells her story.

Earlier this week I decided to make a batch of chili. I’ve been using chuck roast but dang, it’s expensive now! So I bought a flat iron steak, which looks to be a cut of chuck, but cheaper. Cut it up into chunks and gave it a rough chop in the food processor. Turned out really good!

Making the base from dried chilis is time-consuming so I got smart and made a double batch and saved half for the next time.

    Nice story on Wesley Hunt.

A Candidate at the Center of the Moment

When Wesley Hunt spoke to two dozen curious voters in the backyard of a suburban Houston home on a cool night in September, he had just come from his doctor’s office after donating plasma for the possible treatment of others who had been infected with COVID-19.

He told his doctor, “I’ll be here every week in this chair, if you need me to be here every week in this chair.”

In that doctor’s chair and later in that supporter’s backyard, the black Republican running in a swing district found himself at the center of the American political moment in so many different ways. From race relations to the pandemic to the political fight for suburban Texas, Hunt says his personal experience with each topic brings a level of understanding that leaves him uniquely qualified. And at the center of everything is a place the West Point grad and former Apache helicopter pilot seems comfortable.

What are his chances against the ghastly Lizzie Fletcher ?

After the last two elections I’m not even gonna guess. Based on 2016 I did not expect democrats to take the House in 2018. And Republicans picking up a couple senate seats makes it even more confounding.

It could be a massive blue wave where the evil ones take control of the White House and all of congress, and our Republic is dead. Or Trump could win, Republicans could hold their contested senate seats and pick up the Michigan and Alabama seats, and retake the House with people like Hunt.

College football is underway, and so far, 2 ranked teams have lost their games. ATM is taking on Mike Leach’s Mississippi State beginning here shortly. Miss State has underperformed after opening its season with a win over the LS&U Tigers, which has been a disappointment to me. But it is Leach’s first season, so they are still getting used to the new system and that system also requires certain personnel types which may not be fully developed yet by Leach. So let’s see if Leach can get his mojo going and spook the Aggies, or if the higest paid coach in the world, Jimbo Fisher can earn his keep and win. Aggies should win anyway, but as they say, you never know for sure and that’s why they play the game.

    This is from yesterday.

Houston, TX – A new poll released today by the Hunt campaign shows a competitive race in the 7th District between incumbent Lizzie Fletcher and challenger Wesley Hunt. Fletcher and Hunt are in a statistical tie with Fletcher holding a slim 2% point lead, well within the margin of error of 4%. It also shows Hunt with a stronger favorability margin than Fletcher and possessing a more enthusiastic base of support.

Polling memo with more details can be found here.

This news comes on the heels of Thursday’s announcement that Hunt out-raised Fletcher by a more than 2 to 1 margin in the 3rd fundraising quarter. Hunt Campaign Manager Jim Hilk released the following statement along with the poll.

This is from the Cook Political Report.  Charlie Cook is a Democrat, but he had a history of being fairly accurate until 2016 when Trump blew his data out of the water.

These days, it’s tough to find good news for House Republicans. But there’s a sleeper race bucking the trend in southwestern Oregon, where a bona fide anti-terrorism hero is running against 34-year Democratic incumbent and Transportation and Infrastructure Chair Rep. Peter DeFazio (OR-04). A month out, both parties now regard the race as competitive and are spending accordingly. Last week, Cook moved this race from Likely Democrat to Lean Democrat. I think, at the least, it’s a dead heat.

For years, the underlying swinginess of DeFazio’s 4th CD has been masked by the weakness of his GOP opposition. In 2016, President Trump lost Oregon’s 4th CD by just a tenth of a point. But for five cycles in a row, Republicans nominated wacky “alt-scientist” Art Robinson, who opposed public education, believed urine held the secret to human life extension — and lost by double digits each time.

DeFazio said the other day that Alex Skarlatos raised more money in the last quarter than he had ever raised in an entire year after being in office for 34 years.

    Heh.

Most of the time, the host lampoons conservatives, while inviting on panels of mostly left-wing commentators to talk about the news du jour.

That explains why Adam Schiff was blindsided by Bill Maher laying into him about how terrible their home state of California has become under Democrat rule.

Maher began by saying he needed to “b**** a little” about how Democrats were running things.

Then the host continued, “There is an exodus. California businesses are leaving the state in droves. In just 2018 and 19, which were economic boom years, 765 commercial facilities left, 13,000 between 2009 and 2016. Look, I came out here in 1983. I found paradise. I love California. I do. I don’t want to leave, but I feel like I’m living in Italy in the 70s or something. Super high taxes, potholes in the road, fires. I don’t know what I’m getting for my super-high taxes.”

Maher asked Schiff straight up, “What do you say about that as a California representative?”

#66 Shannon: A progressive state is the exact opposite of that which will attract and hold profitable PRIVATE businesses.
I am convinced that Adam Shiff-Haole believes that my statement above is false and he does not have the intellectual agility to understand why he is wrong. Maher, on the other hand may realize that Socialism sucks for the masses but he doesn’t care, he already has his pile of money so he believes that he will be among the ruling sect.
The empirical evidence over the last 100 years of experiments in over 30 different countries around the world yields this conclusion: socialism fails and causes failures in those countries that implicate it in direct proportion to its implementation.

Morning gang. Very pleasant out here this morning, and yesterday’s winds have laid down now. Both football and baseball were entertaining yesterday, and while all the outcomes were not necessarily to my liking, there were some good games to enjoy. I don’t have any sports on my TV, so I have to listen in on the radio and paint my own pictures in my head about what’s going on. Fortunately, many years ago as a high schooler, I listened to all the Southwest Conference games brought to us by the Humble Oil and Refining Company on the radio, and Kern Tips would always be broadcasting one of them. Kern could paint the scene and the action with words that you could visualize just as if you were there live and in person, and I could always dream of being in one of those big stadiums on a brisk fall afternoon with roaring crowds and players performing magnificent virtually, impossible runs and catches as described by the announcers. So I can still listen to a ball game on the radio and enjoy the action without TV. Book readers and story tellers could paint visuals in the consumers’ mind, TV and all the visuals took all that away. It limits the imagination to one single reference – that which you see with your eyes versus what all you could imagine when reading or listening. Oh well, there will always be some of us throwbacks I guess.

Anyway, here’s hoping that you all have a great day. More later as it develops.

I had a critical failure using my fastferm fermenting jug. The yeast collection ball (which sits at the bottom) cracked. Fortunately I have another jug/ball assembly so I just grabbed that one. Fast Ferm has a design flaw, because this is the 2nd time I have had a failure in the same place. Why they would choose to undercut below the threads is a mystery to me. The undercut makes that the weakest point in a high stress situation – not smart. I have already sent an email requesting to buy 4 more of these balls. I intend to call them tomorrow morning and try to get them to expedite the shipment. Perhaps they might be interested in improving their product, who knows.
I have a hard time believing, in today’s competitive environment, that they would intentionally make a defective product to sell more replacement parts and irritate a whole bunch of existing and potential new customers in the process.

Well, I attended the novus ordo mass at my parish today. I told Hubby that after attending 3 Latin masses, I felt like I was in kindergarten. Today was a celebration of the Feast of St. Teresa of Avila, a Doctor of the Church. She’s kind of a big deal. I’m sitting there, having just finished my rosary (which I almost had to yell at points in order to keep my focus over all of the noise from people talking and such before mass), and I suddenly hear saxophone music. Now, I play the sax. I still have my sax. This, however, sounded like lounge music and I’m thinking WTH? I look up at the screens and there is the image of St. Teresa and the singing of a prayer called “St. Teresa’s Bookmark” starts. Then the processional starts.

We go through the mass, and I find myself getting annoyed that the choir does its usual job of not knowing when to quit. Father is up there waiting for their song to end. He is patient, I’ll say.

We get to the homily, and I know that our pastor is a Democrat. With all the ruckus in the Church right now, thanks to Fr. Altman, et al, for waking up the folks, our pastor decides to not take a stand. Instead he tells us that we need to pray and look at the two parties, and then decide which one most closely aligns to the beliefs of the Church. I know that since he’s from Mexico, he’s thinking that immigration is the most important topic, whereas I’m thinking of all those butchered babies and the socialism being shoved down our throats. It’s all I can do not to get up and walk out, but I remember that I’m there for Jesus and not the pastor.

As I pulled into the parking lot, I noticed a car next to me – and a visiting priest was gathering his stuff. I haven’t been to our church in months, so I didn’t recognize him, but we often have priests doing masses for our pastor. I was eagerly waiting to see what he was going to be like, since he had a Trump sticker on his car. Alas, Fr. Sellers didn’t get to speak. I have found out that he helps out often, almost every weekend. It might be good to see if I can catch him doing a homily. I need to find out what his relationship to our parish is; if he’s going to be permanent, Hubby and I may want to stick around instead of changing parishes. It’s something we’ve been discussing.

I got to see my Church Friend who lost his father last week. He said his mother is now realizing just how empty the house feels. He’s staying with her for now, and all of the kids are trying to slow down her efforts to clear out the house. That will keep her from feeling so alone and give her more time to adjust mentally to the void in her life. CF says she’s doing well, considering. Both of the parents are strong people of faith, and that certainly helps when dealing with a loss like this.

  126. El Gordo Avatar

#123 – Ask around on this topic. And do some research. I’ve got several tips of do’s and don’t do’s. Don’t buy one of those soundbars or one of the “theater in a box” systems. They do not have the sound enhancement and power output that you most likely would want, although admittedly just about anything is better than the speakers that come on your TV. Any real speakers that you buy, like bookshelf speakers, towers that sit on the floor, etc. will require an external amplifier to drive them – the power output from the TV connections alone do not have enough power to make them fire. The range of amplifiers is unlimited, from something simple from Amazon for under $20, to AV amplifiers in the low thousands. The inexpensive amps must have a input source, so that would mean that your TV will need an output source – most use bluetooth for the output as the amps have built in bluetooth receivers. If you have an existing stereo system, you can connect your TV sound to the stereo as its amplifier will drive the speakers. Make certain that your TV has at least 1 HDMI/ARC connection. This will assist greatly in trying to connect to sound systems. Do you just want better sound that the TV speakers afford, or do you want the really great sound that is available as a result of HDTV? That plays a role in what kind of sound system you might look at. Frys has some sound room set up that display these things.

My home theater is a DIY system. I have a Roku device, an Amazon Fire stick, a Blu-Ray player, a mini-computer, and an old fashioned VCR hooked up to it. The AV amplifier has 4 HDMI inputs, a few RCA input jacks, and assorted stuff back there, as well as built in AM & FM receiver. So all those devices are connected to the AV receiver/amplifier. The AV device outputs through an HDMI cable to the TV, and of course, the HDMI cable carries both video and audio. The the AV device splits off the audio and directs it to a speaker system (in this case, it is called a 5.1 system) which means it serves 5 speakers (two in front, two in back and 1 center (5)) and a sub-woofer (1). Of course, you can get by with 2 speakers in front and be fine. If you are connecting something like the old VCR through RCA jacks, you have separate audio and video connections, and that is where the HDMI/ARC connection comes in.

Anyway, a sound system can get out of hand pretty easily. I don’t have a TV in the bedroom, but I’ve been considering one, and if I do that, I’ll probably buy a couple of bookshelf speakers, a cheap receiver with bluetooth input, connect them up for less than a hundred dollars, and be entirely satisfied. But you can see the range of money and sophistication available in this stuff. Check out home theater systems for a good overview, and go from there. As to TV’s in the 50″ range, I think the 4K models are now coming down in price pretty well, I haven’t looked at them in a few years, but BFF’s TV went out and we are going TV shopping tomorrow when I get to big D.

I do like Fry’s for my equipment purchases, and I do not like Best buy. OK, hope some of this makes sense.

  132. Hamous Avatar

    139. The problem is the Bose speakers have a non-standard connection to the receiver. I don’t think I could find a receiver/amp I could connect to. There are five speakers that all plug into the bass module, then one cable that plugs into the receiver.

Hey, out here where we have no terrestrial TV and very limited, static charged radio, you gotta do red neck engineering to get any kind of news from the outside world. Now surely one could take those Bose speaker wires and cut off any type of proprietary plug in and make it work on just about anything.

As to sound bars, I may have been a little overly critical. I’ve just always thought that they were too expensive for what you get, but most assuredly there are some good ones, and as I said earlier, anything is better than the speakers on the TV. The sound bars also have their built in amps, so they are pretty much plug and play and don’t take up much room, no wiring to run all over the place, etc. Expense versus sound quality is my criticism, but then again, I’ve got all day to mess around with wires and stuff.

OK, now I’ve got a letter stuck on one of my computer keyboards. so here goes. First, I’ll take the back off, which I’ve already stripped the heads on two of the screws so that will be a hassle. Then, I’ll screw around with the insides and clean it up a little bit, then put it back together with a couple of random screws missing, then play with it a bit and probably discover that the problem is a scratch in one of the little circuit boards or something, then toss it in the trash and order a new one. Of course, ordering a new one to begin with is what most sane people do, but what can I say. I’m just drawn to the hopeless causes.

The keyboard has a Lenovo sticker right in the center on the back of the keyboard with all the spec and stuff on it, and sure enough, when I removed the sticker I found another little screw that was keeping the thing from coming apart for inspection. Sneaky. But I went ahead and put the sticker back on so that the next person who decides to take it apart will discover that problem too.
