Weekend Culturally Significant Recordings Open Comments

This past week, the Library of Congress published a list of “culturally significant recordings” that it would preserve. There seems to be no real unifying theme; the recordings cover from the 1850’s to the 1990’s. Music practically everyone knows:

Music few have heard of:

Spoken word:

Country and/or Western:

Folk:

Pop/jazz:

A Papal Mass:

Jazz:

Pop / jazzy rock?:

There are several others that can be fairly easily found in the list at the link above. Music can be very uplifting. The wide variety provides something for everyone.

Good morning Hamsters. Balmy 70 at 6 and humid but not mugly. Light breeze stirs after Sunup, rain chances drop to 10% this morning, disappointment lurks again. Everywhere we watered the yard all is Spring green, but the dry pastures are losing that beautiful tone bit by bit. How deceptive is the scene. Hay will be hard to obatin this… Read more »

Springsteen and Bon Jovi are also gaming the system in New Jersey by claiming special ‘farm exemptions’ in order to avoid paying the typical taxes on their property. Thanks to a tax exemption for beekeepers Bon Jovi pays a paltry $104 dollars on 6.8 acres of land in Monmouth County. Springsteen also found a favorable exemption to help him avoid… Read more »

I was in Kroger yesterday and almost bought a six-pack. But I kept thinking “grapefruit” and “beer” and I just couldn’t wrap my mind around the combination. Maybe I’ll try it after all.

Speaking of GoatTrucker, a tip of the hat to ‘im. This stuff is pretty good. Not my favorite Shiner brew but it’s pretty nice right now.

Twenty years ago, almost to the day, I lost someone I cared for deeply. This song came on the radio that night. To this day it still makes me cry like a baby.

May God bless your mother, Bob42.

Thanks to all for the warm thoughts and prayers. Please rest assured that they are greatly appreciated, that I love y’all, and know that I’m both pleased and proud to call you my friend. Also rest assured that I’ll be back next week, with my usual snarky, cynical, edgy, sometimes over the line, and hopefully “makes you think” commentary. Older… Read more »

#51 SuperDave Thanks for the nice but premature congratulations. Handsome has a spot on the TEAM, not entrance into the university. He’ll have to test for that, and boy is he stressing out! Keep him in your prayers, that he (1) can find the time to study, (2) makes the time to study, (3) doesn’t lose his focus on his… Read more »

But I don’t see any Neanderthals on Hamous’s couch or in the recliner in the corner or even on the footstool beside the wing chair. I do see good ladies and gentlemen who well understand and care when someone suffers a serious loss, for many of us have been through it by sad experience. Losing a parent has its own… Read more »

Bob, that piano restoration is a wonderful project in this time of sorrow, for it awaits your attention when you need distraction. The benefit is you can see/hear the progress made, and that helps blunt the at times overwhelming emptiness of the loss–if only for a little bit each time. Grieving takes its own pace, and there are no rules… Read more »

#54 The tuning is coming along, depending on the key the piece is in. I have several notes that I don’t want to “blow torch” any further because the risk of snapping the tone bar in two is too high. I want to have a few spares on hand before I push my luck. Fortunately, there is a cult like… Read more »

I’m sorry if I put a downer on the weekend OC. Definitely no apology required there, Bob. There is most definitely a time for grief and it’s wholly appropriate. I made mention the other day to Squawk that there was more going on than I cared to get into here, and one aspect of that is that I recently lost… Read more »

Thanks Bones, SD, and Katfish. I’ll be fine, with time. My employer has been quite understanding of my intermittent cerebral paralysis, the pre-rehearsal “milk and cookies” choir crew has been helpful, as are my interactions with folks here (more than y’all can know.) Your elected representatives in Washington have declared you incompetent to care for yourself. Your elected representatives in Austin agree with Washington as they work harder to relieve you of the last of your meager savings and freedoms. Your elected representatives in City Hall know your street is full of potholes and there are thieves lurking in the shadows. Sadly, there… Read more »

I’m just tired of waiting on Hubby to arrive with the backhoe. He’ll watch me for a moment and say “I could do that with the backhoe, you know.” I just look at him, look at the pile of dirt, and say “Bring it!”

I spent most of my day working in the yard. I finally moved the walkway from my back porch over to where it will be easier to use. I wanted to get the bricks and loads of dirt moved before the potential rainfall, which I’m hoping will help it settle. I don’t know how many loads of dirt I’ve moved,… Read more »

I hadn’t played it in well over 30 years, and the Rhodes’ intonation is still not where I’d like it to be, but here goes. Hello darkness, my old friend I’ve come to talk with you… Read more »
