Thursday Sow’s Ear Open Comments

China is in trouble, and this can only make them come to Trump with hands out. Or make them aggressive and want to steal from their neighbors.

First, a virus has wiped out a major protein source for their country:

With a mortality rate near 100%, ASF has swept through China’s hog industry, decimating their primary source of protein. Best estimates put losses at 30-35% of China’s 700 million swine population, and it’s still spreading across China and into neighboring Vietnam, Cambodia, Taiwan, and Mongolia.

As usual, Communist Party leaders deny there is an epidemic, but with a 35% reduction in protein available, and an even larger decimation possible in the future, the agriculture problem is serious—on its way to critical. This year China has already destroyed as many pigs as are raised annually in the United States.

That’s a lot of bacon going to waste. Already having a hard time feeding its people, there’s going to be a real challenge to keep them happy. “Feed them cake” may end up in the same result as the first time it was used.

Primarily because…

Well, enter the second plague: meet the Fall Armyworm. It can travel over sixty miles in a day (300 in its lifetime) and lay over a thousand eggs before it dies. It has no natural enemies and is extremely expensive to eradicate, especially for a nation of poor farmers.

The Fall Armyworm has been responsible for devastating China’s other sources of protein (and income). Crops of soybeans, wheat, corn, and rice, among others have been destroyed by this malicious pest. With the huge protein losses due to the swine epidemic, these other crops were critical in making up the difference.

And what does this mean for Trump?

The loss of export revenue brought about by the Fall Armyworm’s devastation couldn’t have come at a worse time for China, with President Trump’s hardline on trade, and tariff pressures. With China weakened by this twin assault on their agriculture industry, and with a faltering economy, we can expect that President Trump’s team will take full advantage as they hammer out a final trade agreement.

Any other president we’ve seen would have managed to turn this silk purse into a sow’s ear.

Just in case I wasn’t clear earlier, Liturgy starts at 9am and open house is at 11am. I encourage you to attend at least one Orthodox Liturgy. You will walk away and either think that it was quite amazing or you will think the Orthodox folks are a bunch of nuts.

Thanks.  I am going to try to make it.  Wife #2 was Catholic and I went to mass with her so I am not totally uninitiated.    I do not genuflect but I do share in the prayers and listen intently.  I thought I would be uncomfortable but no one in the masses seemed to care much less notice.  Oh and the Padres in their visitor acknowledgement have never said anything like “Look out folks he is one of them Baptists”. I have yet to attend an Orthodox mass so I hope to make it.

Morning gang.  Gotta go over to the clinic across the street and have a blood draw for the docs down in Marble Falls.  Once those docs get you coming in, they seem to always find new excuses to keep you coming back.  Skies have cleared this morning, and a balmy 26 degrees at wake up time.  Nothing else going on so far, but I hope all of you have a great day.

#6- Anthony is one of the good guys.  He’s the last really good baseball player to come out of Rice since their Athletic Director has decided to kill off men’s sports.  Even a nationally recognized baseball program that was built from scratch by Wayne Graham for the past 25 years or so.  Amazing that they would do that, but that seems to be the way they roll over there now.

Regarding China’s food issues: I think the old adage ” when you have someone by the short and curlies, the tendency is to pull ” applies here. China is in a very bad spot and Trump would be foolish in the extreme to not use that to OUR advantage. I can’t see him letting this slide.
This could have another benefit to The USA: this will increase the demand for pigs and pig products which in turn, will increase the demand for corn and other feed stocks. Perhaps this will take the pressure off from increasing the amount of ethanol in gasoline(he says hopefully).

Tried it and it did not work.  My neck is in a wreck.  I got places that are compressed that should not be, straight where it is supposed to curved, places that are open that should be closed, questionable discs you name it and my neck is wrecked with it.  I did get some relief for two years with pain management shots, but now we are seriously considering surgery.   This is not a decision I am looking forward to.  Going to get a separate second opinion no matter what.  When the docttor looks at the MRI and turns his head and goes “Ewwwwww” yanno kinda know things are not good.

The Beltway’s ‘Whistleblower’ Furor Obsesses Over One Name.

Federal documents reveal that the 33-year-old Ciaramella, a registered Democrat held over from the Obama White House, previously worked with former Vice President Joe Biden and former CIA Director John Brennan, a vocal critic of Trump who helped initiate the Russia “collusion” investigation of the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.

Further, Ciaramella (pronounced char-a-MEL-ah) left his National Security Council posting in the White House’s West Wing in mid-2017 amid concerns about negative leaks to the media. He has since returned to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

“He was accused of working against Trump and leaking against Trump,” said a former NSC official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.

Also, Ciaramella huddled for “guidance” with the staff of House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, including former colleagues also held over from the Obama era whom Schiff’s office had recently recruited from the NSC. (Schiff is the lead prosecutor in the impeachment inquiry.)

And Ciaramella worked with a Democratic National Committee operative who dug up dirt on the Trump campaign during the 2016 election, inviting her into the White House for meetings, former White House colleagues said. The operative, Alexandra Chalupa, a Ukrainian-American who supported Hillary Clinton, led an effort to link the Republican campaign to the Russian government. “He knows her. He had her in the White House,” said one former co-worker, who requested anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter.

Good afternoon Hamsters. Kinda quiet here today as I’m recovering from total knee replacement done on Monday, got home yesterday afternoon. My left knee had been slowly deteriorating with arthritis for the past several years, so I decided to get it done before it deteriorated even more. If’n the ends of the bones are badly chewed up with wear it makes the replacement harder. Had it done at Memorial Hermann Surgical Hospital in Sugar Land. Only surgeries are done there, no sick people admitted there to lessen the possibility of infections. A very smart decision. The place is about 10 years old. The service there is very good.

The replacement contains no metal parts so no problem with setting off airport scanning machines. There must have been lots of complaints from folks who have the older models that contain metal for causing the inconvenience.

I attended a seminar there for people going to have hip or knee replacements. It was very good so we were well informed of what to expect. The chef (yes they have one) also appeared to give us an idea of the food service to expect. They bring menus around for each meal for you to choose from. And it is good, though I wasn’t very hungry for dinner the day of. The next day I could eat a little more.

Over twenty years ago I put my engagement ring in a “safe place” because a prong on the setting was catching on my clothes and snagging everything. I meant to take it to a jeweler, but I couldn’t find it later.

It’s how I roll. I’ve warned my kids that they’ll need to sort through every paper, open every picture, check every pocket, open every drawer, etc., when I die. There’s lot’s of “safe stuff” all over the house.

Anyway, I’ve been looking for years. Every so often I’ll go back to where I thought I put it and turn everything inside out and upside down, then move elsewhere and toss things there. I’ve never found it.

I’ve begun work on a Christmas project for Handsome Son and Lovely DIL, which involves using “Paca’s” non-valuable costume jewelry. I cleaned a lot of it this afternoon and painted the base. I poured out a bag of her jewelry to begin sorting through her stuff to start dry fitting the items before I started gluing things down.

THERE IT WAS! I’m not even going to ask how my engagement ring ended up with her jewelry; it boggles the mind. Maybe St. Anthony (patron saint of lost things) got tired of waiting on me to find it myself.

It ain’t coming off this finger until I get to a jeweler for a cleaning, resizing, and prong firming down.

    So happy. Happy, happy, happy!

Adee, when I had my knee replacement surgeries (2013 and 2014), I had a choice of Physical Therapy by at-home visits or by being taken to the PT & Sports Medicine gym at Northwest Mem-H. Hubs could drive me in for the sessions, so that was a good choice. They have all the equipment at the gym, and also it’s just more fun to be tortured in a public place. Where will you do your PT?

When I think back about my poor walking ability for the 3-4 years before I had the surgery — even though I was wearing braces under my work slacks, and then toward the end, getting injections to buffer the knee surfaces — I am so glad that I got the new knees as soon as I could.  There are lots of situations I find myself in now where I am walking all over the place and so happy to be able to do it.

Hope it goes well for you, dear lady.

They didn’t bus ’em in as heavy in the barrio this year. Maybe the cold weather discouraged all the baby mamas.

Shannon, I don’t know if #99 was a reply to #98, but I must say it is a bizarre clip. I watched the whole thing!

    1952 GMC 101-22 1/2 ton Pickup.

Owned by Phillip Pierce of Roanoke, VA, this is a beautifully restored truck and great color! Phillip’s in the auto body business and the quality of work on his truck sure shows it. Phillip was bitten hard by the GMC bug and he has a number of other GMCs including 1927 Chevy Capital 1 Ton truck, a 1941 Chevy Suburban , a 1949 GMC Suburban, a 1945 GMC half ton truck , and a 1946 Chevy COE.

FWIW; I’m repost this when the Friday thread comes up, I went ahead and posted it now because if I don’t, I may lose it and navigating the Old GMC site can be difficult.
