In 1932 Huxley’s Brave New World was published.

19 years later Orwell’s 1984 was published.

In the 21st century both dystopian classics began to blend.

This has been a recurring thought for me and Gerard Vanderleun found this cartoon to perfectly express it.

    Dr.Ryan Maue:

Everything You’ve Heard About the Amazon Fires Is Wrong

The international news coverage of Brazil’s Amazon rainforest fires has been a complete disaster. News outlets published inaccurate yet easily verifiable “facts” about the number of fires, declaring the situation “record-breaking” and “unprecedented.” Social media lit up with misleading claims about the loss of planetary oxygen supply (20 percent, said French President Emmanuel Macron) threatening to asphyxiate us all. Stock photos and images of forest fires from the last two decades including Peru and Bolivia were shared widely and wildly. Celebrities and politicians alike heaped condemnation upon Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro leading to an ongoing geopolitical crisis.

The origin of this Amazon fire crisis traces back to the beginning of August, when Bolsonaro sacked his Space Institute minister for publishing worrisome data about the 2019 fire season. The dry season in Brazil typically runs from August to November, as farmers use these months to burn dried-out timber previously cut during land clearing operations. Ranchers also prepare the land for cattle grazing.

Hey, it’s good to be poor !

A groundbreaking study by Just Facts has discovered that after accounting for all income, charity, and non-cash welfare benefits like subsidized housing and Food Stamps — the poorest 20% of Americans consume more goods and services than the national averages for all people in most affluent countries. This includes the majority of countries in the prestigious Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), including its European members. In other words, if the U.S. “poor” were a nation, it would be one of the world’s richest.

    and,

Notably, this study was reviewed by Dr. Henrique Schneider, professor of economics at Nordakademie University in Germany and the chief economist of the Swiss Federation of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises.  After examining the source data and Just Facts’ methodology, he concluded: “This study is sound and conforms with academic standards.  I personally think it provides valuable insight into poverty measures and adds considerably to this field of research.”

The bottom 20% of Americans economically, ranked as a separate nation, would come in #13 in the world in total income.  They would be ahead of Canada, the UK, Australia, Israel, Poland, Mexico and the other 181 countries in the world.

And people wonder why folks from all over the world struggle to come here just to join the lowest quintile in America – it’s a step up.

Morning gang.  Looks like SD is set up for a direct hit from Dorian.  I’m assuming that once it finishes him off it’ll bounce back over here and take out Houston and Austin before delivering a drought quenching rain to central Texas.  That’s my forecast anyway.  My other more likely forecast is that it will fizzle out before ever reaching us on the mainland.

In other news, it only a few days now until football kicks off – real football I’m talking about, not that fake professional wrestling type.  That 2″ rain we had last week never did green up my yard, but I’m still hoping that it’s not stone cold dead and may come back.  McCabe is still at large, and my bet is that he remains that way, as has Comey and all the other coup traitors.  Think it’s bad now, wait until Ruth is done – talk about the Dems running around with their hair on fire.  I’ve heard they already have the witnesses and victim lined up for a sexual assault case against whoever is nominated, and that would include the woman too.  OK, let’s see what the day holds in store. You all have a great one and make the best of it.

I’m reading reports complimenting Trump for keeping his cool when the impotent French President called in a ringer from Iran to get involved in the talks somehow; presumably to embarrass Trump or otherwise set him up for a got-cha moment.  Rather than just pack up and leave, Trump stayed around, acted nice at a joint press conference, did not take the bait, and completed the G7 summit.  But, you can bet your bippy that he won’t forget it when the surrender monkeys come to his doorstep asking for something.  What a macaroon.  In fact, when GB leaves the EU, that only leaves Germany as a productive nation in the entire EU.  None of them have a substantive military force since they rely on NATO (which means US) for their defense needs, and Trump could just threaten to dismantle NATO and let the EU deal with the Ruskies.  Maybe he could accept Greenland as payment in kind for some NATO payments.

Why Greenland is a big deal.  First, the Danes aren’t using it for anything.  The population is only 60,000 people and it costs them $700 million annually.  Second, the Chinese are anxious to get in on the Arctic play since the Ruskies and the US are the only players now.  Thirdly, Greenland offers the strategic location next to Russia via the pole to stop them should they decide to move into the Atlantic from the north.  Thus it’s a national security issue.  It’s not all pie in the sky – there are real reasons that we need Greenland.  If there happen to be minerals and other assets to be mined, that a bonus, but we need the strategic location.  We could also chop up those glaciers and sell the ice to the Japanese who seem to think making alcoholic beverages with iceberg ice is a special deal.

  14. El Gordo Avatar

#14 – I’m hoping, but my forecaster says 0% chance of rain for me.  Probably will stay to the north.  One of the weather rules out here is that some clouds may form up, but they will not release any rain until they reach I-35.  From I-35 to the east there’s always plenty of rain, but out here, very limited.  Bring it on, but I’m not gettin’ my hopes up too high.

Did I mention we took Matsuo to the vet this morning to remove his stitches?  He is pretty well healed and doesn’t have to wear his cone again, unless we catch him gnawing on any of his shaved scar areas. He’s been bouncing around the house, climbing cat trees, scratching the cat scratchers, running up and down the stairs. Good outcome from his scary accident.

Just marking my boundaries.  Nothing keeps the homestead safe form interlopers like a good pot of chili and beans.  In a TRADITIONAL BURGER that real people eat all extras are optional.  But Broccoli?  English Muffin for a bun?  That is pure heresy and should be punished by flogging and 100 days in the stocks.  Tar and feathers are optional.

I thought this was from the Babylon Bee when I first saw it

A Washington, DC, mom says her political-consultant husband left her for Rep. Ilhan Omar, according to a bombshell divorce filing obtained by The Post.

Dr. Beth Jordan Mynett says her cheating spouse, Tim Mynett, told her in April that he was having an affair with the Somali-born US representative and that he even made a “shocking declaration of love” for the Minnesota congresswoman before he ditched his wife, alleges the filing, submitted in DC Superior Court on Tuesday.

Good late afternoon Hamsters.   We’re in shock here on the moors of the Brazos at Richmond owing to actual rain falling on us this afternoon, thunder in the background, reasonably loud pitter pattering on the garden room roof, actual puddles forming on the driveway.  We’ve been the hole in the donut for several weeks now, literally surrounded by rain but not getting any on us.    Just a hair under the 1-inch mark in the gauge.  It is all soaking in.

Contessa and Ruby have enjoyed nature’s bath and are running around the pastures in the cool 75 the rain brought.   Have never seen Ruby run with such joy and almost keep up with Contessa.  Her arthritis meds were doubled last week when the vet was here, as she was lame on her left front leg.  Spouse saw her slip and fall during the chase and amazingly get right back up.

We have never seen her lie down since we adopted her a year ago and presume it is her extensive arthritis that makes her reluctant to do so, probably habit before she was the ward of the humane group for 8 years and in several foster homes, and the Lord only knows what before she was rescued.  She was not on any arthritis pain medication when we adopted her and collapsed in the trailer on the way home.  Went straight to the vet clinic where she stayed for a week getting evaluated and started on her meds.  She’s now on two tablets of Equioxx a day, the horse version of the currently best people arthritis med.

    RE:  Andrew Luck controversy

I recall a couple of years ago an interview with Joe Montana talking about his nearly immobile life.  He can’t do the simplest physical activities with his kids and wife.  Every joint and bone in this body is wrecked.  He said he would’ve quit earlier if he knew it would be like this.

This Gottlieb asshat from Fox Sports deserves every bit of humiliation and derision he gets.  Luck can quit any damned time he want, just as a truckdriver, lawyer or rig hand can drag up at any time.

It’s still a free country – at least this week.

Both of these paragraphs appear in the same article.

•On Monday, KPRC 2 Investigates learned the union has stopped paying Goines’ legal fees. A union official confirming it in a text. Goines’ attorney, Nicole DeBorde, said she will remain with her client.

•Bryant’s legal fees are still being covered by the union; however, an official said Monday they need to examine the charging documents carefully before making a final determination. On Tuesday, a union official said that Bryant’s legal fees will be taken care of until the very end.

    So, which is it?

I think someone took all the copy editors in the world out back and shot them while we weren’t looking.

  48. El Gordo Avatar

Goines is one person represented by legal counsel, which the union will no longer pay for.

Bryant is another person, and the union will continue to pay his legal fees. They were partners, but the charges against Goines, leader of the group, are more serious that those against Bryant.
We still don’t know who shot all those officers.
