This video was made with no CGI and no animation. It is composed of a series of images captured by the Cassini space probe as it approached and passed the planet Saturn. It is pure awesomeness.

What a sight. I check the APOD daily just to remind myself just how insignificant I am, but sometimes my ego gets out in front anyway. Have a good day everyone.

Sez no animation, but at the end we have a screen credit for “Compositing and Animation” to Steven Van Vuuren.

And why does that ring end so abrupbtly? There’s like a straight line right across just to the left of the planet.

My son goes to school with many Muslim kids.

Your son and his Muslim schoolmates are in the US, right? In my earlier comments, I said I have higher expectations of Muslims who have immigrated into Western countries. Presumably some, if demonstrably not all of them, are looking for a more modern life.

    Just sayin:

Saying that the folks you know and interact with are good ones, its just the ones you don’t know or interact with that are the bad ones, is something I’ve observed before in humans.

Perhaps it could be said this way:

“Some of my best freinds are Muslims. Its the ones I’ve never met that are bad.”

What’s been going on in the past few weeks on this is pretty much a constant paring back of just how many evil muslims there are. It started out that all of Islam was incompatible with the west, then it got to “I’m not saying all of them are bad”, and now we’re at the point where the ones who are inside the borders of this country are the good ones because they came here, and the ones who stayed in thier own country are the bad ones.

In a week or so, you’re going to get where I am: The greater majority of the hundreds of billion muslims in this world are peaceful and just want to be left alone to practice thier religion and get on with thier lives. Their religious views are different than mine, and many of them have religious views that are roughly analgous to what many Christians believed a couple of centuries ago. A portion of the 15% of the muslim population in this planet who grew up in a sick culture and lived in abject poverty under authoritarian rulers for the past century have become radicalized and are using the religion as a means to achieve the political goal of gaining the reins of power in thier respective nations. Some of them are fundamentalists who take portions of thier religious texts literally. They are organized and well financed, and its the organization and finance that makes them a danger. They sometimes find common cause with those who only wish political power, and both think they are using the other and will stab them in the back once they get the chance.

Those are the ones I want to remove from the surface of the planet so that the rest of them can go about reforming thier religion the same way mine has been reformed.

    Yahbut;

When you do the fly through, there’s no change in it at all. It just looks like the yellow brick road ends right there.

I think that the cliam of “no animation” is incorrect. What he’s done is taken thousands of pictures and strung them together. There’s no CGI, and it is beautiful and breath taking, but it is an animation. Thew fact that he used pictures without CGI is probably the reason the end of the ring does not change in the fly through.

While the editorial board of the New York Times continues, with righteous indignation, to pontificate over Tea Partiers’ and Republicans’ assaults on the sanctity of government employee compensation and the holiness of union greed, Pinch and his little gang of apostles are:

For the more than 600 Guild members at The Globe, whose pay has already been frozen for several years, the price of survival is steep, as described by several people briefed on the possible deal, who were given anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly. The company and the Guild, which represents workers in the newsroom, the advertising department and some other offices, said Wednesday that they would not discuss the details until a union membership meeting to be held Thursday night.

But the people briefed on the deal said the package included a pay cut of at least 8 percent — as much as 8.5 percent by some accounts — and an unpaid, one-week furlough this year, equivalent to an additional 2 percent pay cut. Company contributions to retirement plans would be eliminated, with limited exceptions for older employees.

Perhaps more important to the company — and to a potential buyer — the Guild would agree to end lifetime job guarantees for employees who started working at The Globe before 1992, in return for improved severance packages for those workers. That would make it easier to lay people off. Union leaders have said the company has made it clear that more layoffs are on the way.

I can’t speak for others, but I am so enjoying the spectacle of the Sulzbergers and the NYT twisting in the wind.

    G’Morning all:
Wonder how many headaches are waking up this beautiful Ash Wednesday morning?

BOSTON FUNDRAISER: President Obama addressed a group of 152 Democratic donors at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The walls were lined with enormous original oil portraits from the 16th century and guests are seated around about 24 round tables.

Obama was introduced by Rep. Ed Markey, who called Obama the “true fulfillment” of JFK and Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream for America.

“When the rubble had cleared, when the dust had settled. This country was going through as touch a time economically, as tough a time financially, as any period since the 1930s,” Obama said..

His administration “had to make a series of quick decisions, and often times unpopular decisions,” Obama said.

In those times, Obama said, there would have been a temptation to “resort to the expedient.”

    Obama continued

“Not only were we able to yank this economy out of the recession,” Obama said.

“Not only were we able to get this economy going again, that in the last 15 months we’ve seen the economy add jobs…but under Nancy’s leadership we were able to achieve historic health care legislation that over the last 15, 20 years will end up benefiting millions of families across the country…

we were able to get “don’t ask, don’t’ tell” repealed,” he continued, adding that Congress expand our investments in clean energy, made the largest investments in infrastructure and the largest investments in education in years.

“We didn’t just rescue the economy we put it on the strongest footing for the future,” Obama said.

Man found dead near top of 1,000-foot radio tower in Oak Park

    By Michael P. McConnell
    Daily Tribune Staff Writer

OAK PARK – Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found near the top of a 1,000 foot radio broadcast tower Tuesday.

The man was reportedly wearing only a T-shirt and underwear when he was discovered on a platform on the tower.

Police said workers discovered the body of a young black man about 12:30 p.m. after they scaled the tower at 20931 Meyers near Eight Mile Road to do repair work.

“They found the body at the top of the tower,” said Oak Park Deputy Public Safety Director Steve Cooper. “We have not identified him yet.”

Cooper said investigators would have a better idea of what may have killed the man after an autopsy is done Tuesday by the Oakland County Medical Examiner.

There were no obvious signs of violence on the body such as stab or gunshot wounds, police said.
“We’re not ruling anything out as to the cause of death,” Cooper said.

Bet he was trying to steal copper and tried to cut a hot wire while he was holding onto the tower (grounded). If only he knew that transmission lines are a steel wire core with aluminum conductors.

    ACSR Aluminum Conductor- Steel Reinforced
Application: Used as bare overhead transmission cable and as primary and secondary distribution cable. ACSR offers optimal strength for line design.
Variable steel core stranding enables desired strength to be achieved without sacrificing ampacity.

Check this out. The investigations into the East Anglia/Penn State Climategate scandal fixin’ to get ugly:

A federal government inspector general has revealed prima facie proof that the so-called independent inquiries widely if implausibly described as clearing the ClimateGate principals of wrongdoing were, in fact, whitewashes. This has been confirmed to Senate offices. It will not be released to the public for some time because the investigation is ongoing.

The document, an interview transcript, will put an end to the foolish talk of anything resembling a ClimateGate “inquiry” having taken place. It will also invite a real inquiry into the affair. Expect fireworks, as the one such effort, by Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, is being fought hysterically by Big Science and Big Academia.

And both groups would like to eliminate our civilization if they could. For different reasons, but with equal passion.

I dunno about today, but back in the day it was a common practice to run the
utilitiy (fatigues for you doggies) shirt buttons thru the grenade pin loop. This put
the grenade in easy reach and it a relatively safe practice.

The cotter-key pin holding the spoon and hammer down was difficult to remove. Indeed,
anyone attempting to “John Wayne” a grenade by pulling the pin with one’s teeth would soon be visiting Sick Bay for some dental work.

Unless!! There were always some #@%^a$$es that would straighten out the cotter pin for easy pull. Of course this facilitated unplanned dropping of the grenade from the utility shirt improvised hanger.

You are right. The durn things will not normally explode unless the pin is pulled and the spoon flys. I wonder if the cop was a decendent of one of those pin straighteners.

Sarge/Simple, it doesn’t sound like a TV show I’d waste my time on. But I don’t see garbage like that as a threat to civilization.

Stating that secularists/atheists want to eliminate our civilization is blatant political pandering to the irrational xenophobic fears of the religious right.

And both groups would like to eliminate our civilization if they could.

And anybody that believes what Newt said is actually true is misinformed. By him. On purpose.

Do you actually believe Newt when he says that folks like me want to “destroy civilization?”

Does the proposed TV show support that nonsensical notion in any way, whatsoever? Restating your apparent hypothesis: Trashy TV shows exist, therefore they are created by secularists/atheists because they want to destroy civilization.

Intentional and purposeful fear mongering on the part of professional politicians, for their benefit, is a poor excuse for honesty and good government.

It’s sad that you apparently believe them.

ADVERTISING WORKS! Does it ever cross your mind why you have to keep seeing that pasty faced red lipped girl on the car insurance commercial every wissin time you turn on the tube regardless of which station it is?? Because enough sheeple are buying the product to make it worthwhile. The fact that they are spewing millions on marketing and have to build that cost into their premiums doesn’t seem to penetrate the psyche of many Americans. Apparently if they hear/see it enough, no matter how ridiculous or irritating it is, then by golly it must be true.
Take that understanding and move it to a different arena: In the first you are trying to persuade someone to buy your brand of car insurance by telling them it is cheaper; in the second. . . . . . .

In a sense, our Judeo-Christian civilization is under attack from two fronts. On one front, you have a secular, atheist, elitism. And on the other front, you have radical Islamists. And both groups would like to eliminate our civilization if they could. For different reasons, but with equal passion.

    –Newt Gingrich

In the highlighted section above can anyone look at modern TV over the last 25 years and say that the overwhelming push is not towards high morals and righteousness?? Isn’t it much more accurately described as a hard core push towards left wing, secular, elitist, atheism? It is a marketing campaign on a really big scale. There are a few exceptions to this, like Touched by an Angel for example, but the overwhelming trend has been in the other direction.
The Madison Avenue types are very powerful and they tend, overwhelmingly so, to be hard core lefties.
Want other examples of pushing in a direction?
    – How about the “cool trend” for guys to have a 3-10 day growth of scruff on their face – not clean shaven nor full beard just dirty looking scruff. Does anybody really think that looks good? Why do the overwhelming number of models and actors feel compelled to do it?
    – How about the nifty trend to wear pants below the crotch line and have the back pockets almost to the knees? It looks like crap, you see the kids have to hold their pants up with one hand and they all walk funny and can’t run – why the hell do they still feel compelled to do it when it is so counter productive? Would they still do it if it weren’t for hard core marketing and peer pressure?
-Take the last part of Newt’s statement; do you really think that the moooslims are stupid and have no concept of mass marketing?? Why do you think they constantly scream and wail when Israel responds to repeated rocket attacks from Gaza but never says a word about the rockets being launched in the first place?
Never a word is uttered when moooslim men gang rape a non-moooslim woman, but when a few of the perps are brought to justice, then we have to be tolerant??

In order for either the secular atheists lefty scumbags or the hard core sharia mooooslims to get their way the Judao-Christian believers have to be taken out of dominance in the culture. Marketing is a huge part of that effort on either side.

Obviously I can’t speak for others here, but I am not going to be where you are in a week, or possibly ever. I never said *MY* best friends are Muslims, they aren’t. I know and work with some Muslims and we get along OK. I am slightly suspicious of what happens when they are at mosque in the Houston area. I still remember the Rushdie fatwa demonstration that occurred in Houston on Sept 10, 2001, the day before 9-11.

It gives me the creeps when I see Muslim women out in public in Houston wearing their head wraps. I have no such reaction to immigrant women just wearing their native garb as long as they are not enshrouded like lepers. I don’t like reading stories such as when the UK’s National Health Service decreed that all hospital personnel should wear short sleeves to minimize spreading germs, they soon had to exempt Muslim women who refused to bare their forearms. I don’t see how the West benefits much from having such people living among us. But I do think those living in the West are less likely to be jihadis than those living in their Crapistans around the globe.

So let’s just agree to disagree about Muslims.

So, I misunderstood you when you said:

Do you actually believe Newt when he says that folks like me want to “destroy civilization?”

and you seem to have misunderstood, or at least read what you wanted into his statement when you said this:

Stating that secularists/atheists want to eliminate our civilization is blatant political pandering to the irrational xenophobic fears of the religious right.

Becuase he did not say that. Let us review:

    In a sense,

Why, my goodness. He’s actually speaking in the abstract, not the absolute. for a guy who tells us he is operating from science and logic, you seem to have missed the actual meaning of “In a sense”.

our Judeo-Christian civilization is under attack from two fronts. On one front, you have a secular, atheist, elitism.

And here he is saying that the danger is inherent when one combines the three separate ideas into one paradigm. You took it as an attack on only atheists and/or secularists. I agree with newt that these ideas only become dangerous when combined with elitism, but will add the caveat that it is truly dangerous when those three concepts are the operational principal of those who wield political power. And, I would say that such folks would at least like to transform our civilization into one that disdains religion.

Like the folks who just got fired at PBS, for instance.

And on the other front, you have radical Islamists. And both groups would like to eliminate our civilization if they could. For different reasons, but with equal passion.

LONDON: ‘Gay’ atheist warns of ‘tyrannous new … liberal morality’ oppressing Christians

    BY JOHN-HENRY WESTEN
    http://www.lifesitenews.com/
    March 4 2011

Last week’s ruling of the High Court in London banning pro-family Christian couples from fostering children has even self-described “gay” atheists concerned. The justices ruled that it was appropriate to ban a Christian couple from fostering children since they refused to present homosexual sex as positive.

David Starkey, a renowned historian and UK media personality, was discussing the ruling on BBC television yesterday. Starkey said: “I am gay and I am atheist but I have profound doubts about this case. It seems to me that what we are doing is producing a tyrannous new morality that is every bit as oppressive as the old.”

Starkey described what he believes was harassment from police that he experienced while growing up as a homosexual. He said, however, that, “I am very, very concerned that a new sort of liberal morality is coming in, which as I said, is as intolerant, is as oppressive, is as intrusive into family life.”

Starkey also raised the case of the British couple who owned a small hotel and were fined since they did not wish to accommodate a homosexual couple. Starkey said he was opposed to the fine, suggesting rather: “The way to do that is not to ban them, not to fine them. It is for them simply to put up what seems to me to be a quite proper notice in a small privately run hotel which says we are Christians and this is what we believe.”

“Otherwise, we are as I said, we are producing a new tyranny,” he added.

Starkey noted that his own mother was a Christian and firmly opposed to homosexuality, which Starkey said made him who he is.

Starkey concluded his remarks emphatically stating, “Having an … imposed morality is a very bad idea.”

Boney and Bob,

I am a very lapsed Catholic; therefore I should not really care about a television show that likely has all the redeeming qualities of bed lice.

I believe it is just plain old bad manners to ridicule one person’s religion (or lack of it for that matter). I see and hear it far too often and that includes some on this blog.

We do live in a country the embraces a pretty liberal view of the freedom of speech no matter how tacky that speech might be. Still, I would really be rooting for the Priests and Preachers to encourage their flocks to not purchase the products of any manufacturer that chooses to sponsor that show.

    Democracy at its finest.

The turbofan is there to get the car up to 350mph. The rocket is intended to get it from 350mph to max speed. The Cosworth drives the fuel pump for the rocket. It is supposed to deliver one tonne of fuel to the rocket in 20 seconds.

So I guess we’re not going to get an answer to the question I asked in #63.

Since you seemed to have missed it, this is from my #57:

If a person has the means and the intent to provide for a child’s needs, their religious beliefs (or lack thereof) or their sexual orientation/marital status should not be used as a reason to deny them the opportunity.

Your question is based on a very flawed premise that folks that don’t believe the same as you do are out to “destroy civilization.” You have failed to offer any compelling evidence to support your or Newt’s statements to that effect.

As I said at first, it’s political fear mongering. Your commentary supports that hypothesis.

Micheal Berry is talking about the first national Black spelling bee to be held in Houston.

He is ranting that it is a loser’s league because the participants are being taught they can’t compete with other kids.

I have a tendency to agree with him.

Yet its the secularists in the UK who actually got a law changed that denies adoption rights to devoutly religious people.

Can you point us all to any laws domionists have passed in Western countries that set us on the road to establishing a large and powerful government to impose their beliefs on everyone via force of law, and mixing God with government?

Cuz I would think that those with enough power to actually change a law would be the ones that pose the greater threat.

Bobo (and his loose associations of like-minded individuals) want to destroy civilization as we know it.

    Well;

As usual Bobby painted himself into a corner today.

First, he says Newt is engaging in the politics of fear swhen he claims that atheist secular elitists are trying to change our civilization. In fact, he says its a preposterous lie.

Then, Shannon (bless you my boy) provides an example where secularists in Great Britain did something that pretty much fits the description of just the kind of thing people trying to change our civilization would be doing.

Bobby recognizes that what’s been done is a bad thing, and says he doesn’t beleive the same thing the Secularists in Europe did.

Then, he raises the shiboleth of Christian Dominionists who want to establish a large and powerful government to impose their beliefs on everyone via force of law, and mixing God with government. (and fails to recognize the irony that he is engaging in the politics of fear in the process).

Then, when asked who presents the greater threat to our civilization, his small minority Dominionists or the Secularists who are actively engaged in changing laws in Europe to discriminate against persons of faith, he realizes that if he says its the folks who are changing laws, he has to admit that Newt might have a point. so he gives a non-answer and pretends that the guy who asked the question just doesn’t “get it.”

    C’mon Bobby;

Scaring people with Dominionist Christians is oh so 2008.

    Try to keep up.

The Pride of the Democrat Party, Alcee Hastings, who is an impeached Federal Judge elected to Congress continues to make everybody proud.

A former aide has sued a Florida congressman — claiming he touched her, made unwelcome sexual advances and asked her about her underwear.

The lawsuit against Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) was announced Monday by the conservative legal group, Judicial Watch, on behalf of former aide Winsome Packer. Hastings, a 74-year-old divorced father of three, vehemently denied the allegations, calling the lawsuit a political attack.

I just got back from church, having been ashed. Of course, those lightly practicing Catholics showed up tonight in force. One of them sat there and watched as her young son CHEWED ON THE PEW in front of him. Scraping his top and bottom teeth, and then feeling the scratch marks he was making. I finally got up and walked over, asking her to please stop her son, as he was permanently damaging the pew. She acted surprised and the kid finally looked guilty.

I guess property damage just comes as a matter of course for some.

I would try to be more charitable, but we just spent gazillions of dollars getting our pews refinished only about five years ago.

I went to the early liturgy today (6:30 – ick; had an all-day meeting, so lunch was out) to get my forehead splodge of ashes applied. Turns out Fr. Horrigan has a very light touch with the ashes and I wound up with a tiny splodge. Others got the full forehead where they looked like they did a faceplant into a coal truck. 🙂

Church was about half full – it’s a big building. Quite a few high school kids there; that did my heart good.
