Sarge – seen this hammock? There’s a good deal of controversy in the hammock community over that one. If you click on the link now, you’ll see that its dead.
But if you click here, you’ll see its not dead.
The hammock in both ads is a clone of this one, made in the same Chinese factory.
Its been on the market for about 5 years and has developed a loyal fan base (I’m not one of them, it seems to me to be a silly design). They are all up in arms about it, calling it a scam and warning people away. Some hammock forums on the web and FB have banned discussion and posting of ads (but that’s because they are shills for manufacturers and makers who pay a fee). That link was taken out of the first ad by Facebook after the fanboy complaints, mainly b/c the ad featured a video showing set up of the Amok hammock in which the Amok logo was seen, but they’ve been posting just the new product page now so folks can still buy it.
Me? I’m a “meh” on the design, and on the marketing, I actually encourage people to buy the clone. Amok has been selling that contraption for ove $200 each for 5 years, when it obviously it costs less than $30 to make (actually less than $20 b/c the clone was first offered at $20). They’ve made their confiscatory profits, and now its time for them to face some competition. I actually think is karmic that the factory that has churned out thier over priced hammocks is the one giving them the competition.
BTW, Amok is not an evil American Capitalist price gouging corporation. Its an evil Democratic Socialist Norwegian price gouging corporation who’s Government protects their price gouging at the expense of the Little Guy.

This is some amazing futuristic stuff. Individual tanks with their own mini-Iron Domes.
In the near term, the iconic main battle tank M1 Abrams will be the first to be kitted out with this remarkable new approach to keeping crews safe. The M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles and Strykers are also expected to receive this remarkable upgrade soon as well.
Imagine the U.S. Army being able to send vehicles into battle that enemy forces cannot hit with their weapons. Every time they try, the tank automatically launches counter-measures destroying the would-be tank-slaying-round mid-air.
Enemy fire would be futile. The U.S. Army would be even more unstoppable.
Right now, two countries already have battle-proven APS: Russia and Israel.

Each month, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) awards a higher ed school with the worst free speech practices or codes in the nation.
FIRE announces its Speech Code of the Month for December 2008: Lone Star College in Texas.
ten years later nothing has changed apparently,
Lone Star College has six branches throughout Texas serving about 89,000 students. On June 6, at 4:12 p.m. local time, Lone Star published a webpage announcing the system-wide adoption of a Free Speech Zone Policy.
Though the institution of “free speech zones” may sound positive, the new policy appears to restrict student’s free speech rights to tiny zones scattered across each campus, such as sidewalks adjacent to parking lots and hallways.
and then,
But when Lancaster placed a phone call three weeks ago seeking clarity from school officials, he told Campus Reform that he was put on hold for up to half an hour multiple times, transferred around like a “hot potato,” hung up on by two administrators, and ultimately never received an answer.
“What are my free speech rights?” he asked. “Why are [they] refusing to clarify?”
Lancaster also said he invited various officials to email him a response, but has not yet heard back. Three weeks later, Lancaster is still without an answer, and Campus Reform’s inquiries to the school’s media office and various officials have been similarly fruitless.
Has there been any local coverage of this ? Have any politicians become involved ? Where is Dan Patrick on this ?
At a state Senate committee hearing in February, 2018:
The group encourages bills that would bar “unconstitutional speech codes” — anti-harassment codes that are written too broadly — on campus, Cohn said. He said policies that restrict where students can distribute flyers at school are problematic and added, “Another thing legislators can do is get rid of misleadingly labeled free-speech zones that are really free-speech quarantines,” he said.
Free-speech zones, which restrict protests to certain — and sometimes out-of-the-way — areas on campus, have garnered significant attention from lawmakers. (Buckingham’s bill sought to ban them.) But most of the university representatives at last month’s hearing said their campuses had done away with, or never had, the zones. Starr said in his testimony that some community colleges recently had them.
This Texas Tribune piece is pretty depressing to read. FIRE has been working the Texas legislators to try and get a bill passed defining, once and for all, freedom of speech on state campuses.

I don’t think the Pope’s declaration carries infallibility, meaning it’s not doctrine of the Church.
To be an infallible statement, it must: (1) be a declaration on faith and morals, and (2) be spoken “ex cathedra,” or “out of the Chair of Peter”. There have been only two “ex cathedra” statements.
Many not of the Catholic faith confuse the infallibility attribute of the Pope to mean that ever utterance out of his mouth is dogma. Not so. True dogmatic statements tend to develop over a period of time, and the Pope consults with the Magesterium (the teaching arm of the Church, mostly made up of the Bishops) before issuing such a statement. It’s not like the Pope wakes up one morning and thinks “What important ruling can I take today?”
One thing about infallibility that is overlooked by most is the fact that it prevents a current Pope from contradicting an earlier pope. I call it “the guardrails of our faith”. If this Pope is infallible, then previous popes were also infallible -meaning that to contradict them would be to declare him (current Pope) in contradiction with the Church’s teachings that go all the way back to Jesus himself. Infallibility is a RESTRICTION on the Pope, not a gift.
I’m not saying every Pope has been honest or trustworthy – there’s good and bad in every pot – but the concept of infallibility has done well to keep the Catholic faith truer to its roots than most other religions, especially these days.

Now I’m off to hug grandbabies. Y’all behave while I’m gone.

Working for the government is like living in fantasy land. You never get fired no matter the level of your incompetence.
A new bipartisan Senate report revealed more than half of the government’s public data on federal spending is wrong, as the website USAspending.gov is riddled with errors.
The Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, led by chairman Rob Portman (R., Ohio) and ranking member Tom Carper (D., Del.), released a report Tuesday finding nearly every agency is failing to accurately report its spending as required by federal law.
The subcommittee reviewed over two dozen inspector general reports and determined 55 percent of the spending data submitted to USAspending.gov was inaccurate. The errors accounted for $240 billion in spending during the second quarter of 2017, according to the report.

Morning gang. Not much happening to report on this morning. I’ve scoured the bowels of the internet and still find very little news worthy items. The Manafort trial is still underway, but I have to assume that the prosecution case is not going anywhere, at least in it’s effort to trap the President, or we would be hearing about it all over the news. My baseball team, the Blue Jays, were sellers during the last minute trading frenzy, so once again, I’m having to learn about a lot of new players. That means they have no chance to make the playoffs, so they will be bringing up a lot of AAA players to see how they look and giving them a taste of life in the big leagues. Individual players will now be playing for contracts and positions on next year’s team, etc. It’s most interesting to look at some of the prospects, many of whom take advantage of their opportunity to shine at the big league level and improve their chances of making a team next year. Oh, I almost forgot, what about the weather out here today – here you go – hot and dry. Have a great day you all.

The 9th Circus continues to make a mockery of itself.
HEADLINE: U.S. appeals court rejects challenges to California gun laws
(Reuters) – A federal appeals court on Friday upheld the constitutionality of two California laws restricting the ability of people to buy and carry firearms, rejecting appeals by gun rights advocates.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed a challenge to provisions of California’s Unsafe Handgun Act requiring that new handguns contain two features intended to limit accidental discharges, and microscopically stamp their makes, models and serial numbers onto fired shell casings.A different panel of the same court upheld a 2015 amendment to California’s Gun-Free School Zone Act that forbade people with concealed carry permits from possessing firearms on school grounds, while continuing to let retired police officers do so.
Gun rights advocates said the handgun law violated their Second Amendment rights, and that both laws violated their Fourteenth Amendment equal protection rights.
Reporting by Jonathan Stempel in New York; Editing by Bernadette Baum
Does the technology even exist to microstamp that info? How durable can that stamping mechanism possibly be and how much does it cost?
This is another example of why Kavanaugh needs to be installed on the SCOTUS as soon as possible. Waiting until after the election is absurd and it presents an un-necessary risk. It is time that the Rs start acting like they are in charge and force this appointment through. With K on the court, there will be 5 mostly solid (Roberts?!?) conservative, constitutionalist votes and the California law will likely be struck down.

#24 TT: It sure looks like he is changing Church doctrine:
Before, church doctrine accepted the death penalty if it was “the only practicable way” to defend lives, an opening that some Catholics took as license to support capital punishment in many cases.
But Francis said executions were unacceptable in all cases because they are “an attack” on human dignity, the Vatican announced on Thursday, adding that the church would work “with determination” to abolish capital punishment worldwide.
Francis made the change to the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church, the book of doctrine that is taught to Catholic children worldwide and studied by adults in a church with 1.2 billion members. Abolishing the death penalty has long been one of his top priorities, along with saving the environment and caring for immigrants and refugees.
Whether or not he decreed this radical change from the Chair of Peter or not, this is an official change in Church doctrine and will likely cause strife among the Catholics in this country and elsewhere. I think there was a very good reason why HE (ELOHIM) INSISTED that some crimes were death penalty crimes; rape, child molestation and murder, just to name a few.
Peopleanimals who behave this way are toxic to humanity, like a cancer and need to be dealt with appropriately. When one shows kindness to the wicked by not executing them, wickedness will be inflicted on the kind as a result. -
De Senators are wanting all information since birth certificate date for Kavanaugh acting like they won’t vote nay when it’s all over. Congresscritters always have the option to vote Yea or Nay on any issue. If they don’t like the amount of information provided, simply vote Nay. Same as any other legislation – if you don’t understand it, vote Nay; if you don’t like it, vote Nay; whatever reason, vote Nay. Count the votes and the winner takes all. Screw that “fairness” stuff. If people want to dig up dirt, go for it, but on their own dime. Bear with me on this. The Dems rely on the courts to do things they can’t otherwise get passed legislatively. All these crazy nationwide injunctions against Trump policies issued by obscure but powerful district judges (normally in the area served by the 9th Circus) are required to go to the 9th Circus where they are upheld. They then go to SCOTUS where they are overturned. But, with a 4-4 split on SCOTUS, the rulings remain in effect. So the Dems recognize this, and by holding the nominee hostage and keeping him from being seated, they control the courts. That’s what this is all about. Reps must demand a vote on Kavanaugh before the start of the next SCOTUS term.

President Trump has been criticized for politicizing the intelligence community by threatening to strip the security clearances of former top officials including John Brennan and James Clapper. But numerous past and present senior intelligence officials say that the Obama administration started the politicization — and that revoking the clearances of those who abuse the privilege for partisan purposes may help right the ship.
“As is often the case with the Trump administration, the rollout of the policy is bad, but the idea driving the policy is sound,” said one senior intelligence official who, like others interviewed for this article, spoke to RealClearInvestigations only on condition of anonymity. “Under some Obama-era intelligence chiefs, intelligence was used as a political weapon. We need to root that out, not reward it.”
and,
Hoffman, a Fox News analyst himself, has written critically of Brennan and Clapper’s media posture. As a former CIA station chief in Moscow, Hoffman said he is especially concerned about Brennan’s speculation that Trump could be compromised by the Russians.
“Brennan and Clapper are doing Putin’s bidding when they speculate without facts,” Hoffman told RCI, “in Brennan’s case that Putin could blackmail Trump, and in Clapper’s that the Kremlin’s interference swung the election to Trump. Senior intelligence officers should know we speculate at our own peril.”

Does it not seem a tad bit weak-knee’d for “senior intelligence officials” to insist on anonymity for their comments on Obama-era abuses?
No. Not at all.
Given the current climate in the DOJ, FBI, CIA and NSA, if I were still employed in a senior position there speaking to a journalist, I would ask for anonymity. There are too many long knives drawn and I just might think the work I’m doing is worthwhile and isn’t worth being thrown under the bus for outing the idiots in the system. There are other ways to accomplish cleaning up the system, like feeding relevant info to sympathetic members on the Hill.

re: Death Penalty and the Church
For probably the last 20 years the CCC has been:
2267 Assuming that the guilty party’s identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor.
If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people’s safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity to the dignity of the human person.
Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm – without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself – the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity “are very rare, if not practically nonexistent.”
The new text is:
Recourse to the death penalty on the part of legitimate authority, following a fair trial, was long considered an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good.
Today, however, there is an increasing awareness that the dignity of the person is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes. In addition, a new understanding has emerged of the significance of penal sanctions imposed by the state. Lastly, more effective systems of detention have been developed, which ensure the due protection of citizens but, at the same time, do not definitively deprive the guilty of the possibility of redemption.
Consequently, the Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that ‘the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person,’ and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide.
The two versions aren’t that different. I’ve made my personal opposition to the death penalty known for some time so nothing changes for this Catholic. The change is not a big deal for me. I’m surprised the last two Popes didn’t make it.
There are plenty of Christians and Jews who oppose capital crimes for a variety of good reasons, not the least of which is the undeniable fallibility of human courtrooms and the prosecutors vying to have someone killed by the state.
…and that is exactly why I’ve opposed it. I came to a moment of clarity while serving on a panel of prospective jurors on a federal drug trafficking case many years ago. It wasn’t a capital case, but as I sat there during voir dire, I asked myself “Could I vote to sentence someone to death?” My answer was unequivocally no. That’s when I realized I was against the death penalty. Years later, Texas removed my last lingering objection when Jimmy Dick signed “life without parole” into law.

Shortly after El Gordo showed up at Rice, John Heisman arrived to serve as coach and athletic director.
The man for whom the Heisman Trophy is named coached at Rice Institute, (the original name of Rice University,) from 1924-1927.
Heisman was not only a great coach, but a great innovator. He was the first coach to have his center ‘snap’ the ball to the quarterback instead of kicking or rolling it. He was also one of originators of the forward pass. Having the quarterback say ‘hike’ to start a play was his invention as well. Dividing the game into quarters also sprang from the mind of Heisman.

Propagandizing with host sAnderson Pooper Scooper, Goebbels Gergens and his ilk never report on the 500 + Trump supporters who’ve been beaten by hateful oppressive progressives. Nor is it reported that the Newspeak Media, CemenNN in particular, have created a climate where a President Trump supporter literally takes their lives into their own hands when donning a MAGA hat in public. Goebbels Gergens accuses Trump of doing exactly what he and the oppressive progressives do, using Hitleresque language, calling anyone who disagrees with them Nazis, fascists, racists, and subhumans, implying they are creatures who are clearly worthy of a beating or worse.
It’s a Newspeak mob mentality. A culture of fascistic violence that is a very combustible mix when pumped over the cable Newspeak Networks 24.7.365. and preached as Gospel by the Alt-Left fascist commentators and pundits, who inhabit the celluloid TV screen, like hogs slopping in an Animal Farm pig pen.

FWIW:
I used to be a strong proponent of the death penalty. And, from a philosophical standpoint I see nothing wrong with that viewpoint. There are some crimes – murder, rape and treason come to mind – that are so vile and so reprehensible that the fitting punishment should be death.
However, we live in an imperfect world. And we are governed and ruled by imperfect men. Because of this, I have come to the conclusion that the permanence and irreversibility of a death sentence renders it almost always unsuitable. I have absolutely no problem with the substitution of “life in prison without the possibility of parole”. This is unstinting punishment – but it allows for us to correct mistakes. If we convict a person wrongly (which seems to happen with astonishing regularity) we cannot restore the lost years, but we can release the wrongly imprisoned victim, give them monetary compensation and at least help to pick up the pieces. If they are dead, you can’t fix it.
I’ll return to my support for the death penalty when we arrive at a foolproof way of eliminating venality, corruption and negligence from the law enforcement and prosecutorial ranks.
-
I’m right there as well FA because I have lost most all confidence in our justice system. BUT, as you say, absolute life sentence without any chance whatsoever of parole

I thought there might be some secret alternative west Texas meaning to blinker that I didn’t know about. Never heard them called anything else.
-
A California blonde on a National resonator with a Guy Clarke vibe. I see the hot dog plane link in his, not sure why it is there.
-
My feed has the Draco and also how to deal with iguana aggression.
-
#4, Not sure how a link to a redhead belting out a song lead to a bush plane, but glad you like it.
Well, while the video was playing, there were several videos on the right hand side of the page and one of them caught my eye, and I fell in love. Oddly enough, this was the first time in a while that I didn’t get those dancing girls that always show up.
-
If I post hot chicks singing and ya’ll look for Waldo and find airplanes, I’ll skip posting the singers.
-
Only Rice grads say turn signal.
I think they only had one taillight those days.
Right you are, one brake/tag light, no turn signals,….that would have been your arm…So how many of y’all have used arm signals? I did, the 52 Chevy pick-up didn’t have turn signals.

There is a man who rendered heroic service to Texas with the dignity and endurance of Austin, with the physical and moral courage of Travis and with the swagger of Bowie.
His contributions to the survival of the Lone Star Republic place him in that pantheon, but unless you’ve studied the Texas Navy, you don’t know anything about him.
Commodore Edwin Ward Moore commanded the Texas Navy from 1839 to 1843 when a Mexican invasion by sea would have meant the end of the Republic. That never happened because Commodore Moore turned the Gulf of Mexico into the Gulf of Texas.
When congress couldn’t fund the Navy, Commodore Moore decided to make Mexico pay for it. He took his flotilla up the Tabasco river to Villahermosa and extracted $25,000 from the city fathers in exchange for not leveling the city.
When that money ran out, Commodore Moore borrowed $35,000 on his signature to keep the ships afloat and the men provisioned. He was not a wealthy man, but the financiers in New Orleans knew and trusted him. The content of his character was his collateral.
When Mexico purchased the two most advanced warships in the world from Great Britain, Commodore Moore didn’t hesitate to take on this threat to Texas. It was wood and sail vs iron and steam. Nobody gave the Texians a chance.
But Commodore Moore sailed the sloop-of-war Austin between the Mexican ships and got off 530 rounds before the enemy disengaged. The Mexican navy would never again pose a threat to Texas.
In 1847 Commodore Moore published A Brief Synopsis of the Doings of the Texas Navy. It was printed only once and is now a $3500 rarity.
It’s included in the first ever compilation of all available first-hand accounts of the Texas Navy.

Tim, 60 is the new 45. -

I think “blinker” is a West Texas term. MHarper will get it.
Blinkers hadn’t been invented yet when I was living in Midland. People drove with the window rolled down and used hand signals to indicate their turns.
-
I was picking up some signals from this girl in her early 40s a couple weeks ago. I finally had to ask her how old she thought I was. She said 47 or 48. Lol. I’m approximately 20 years older than her. In fact I’m only about five years younger than her mother.
Mharper may be onto something 😉
-
I’m still 60 for a little bit longer.
-
Spies pigging out.
-
A bit of music/SCOTUS trivia. The lead singer of the 80s band in 115, Jimmer Podrasky, is first cousin of Chief Justice John Roberts.
-
Hammie’s got that bald guy mojo workin’.
-
Well I don’t know why blinker struck me that way. How ‘bout the car pocket or turtle? 😀
-
Or car winder.
-
Turtle on the fence post?
-
I’m assuming a car pocket is the glove box? Never heard that one.
-
If it’s raining you roll up the car winder.
-
My millennial nephews and nieces make fun of me when I say ice box.
-
I’ll tell ya one dang thing, our cars have trunks.
NOT bonnets. -
Next to vagina beer, this is the weirdest story I’ve read today.
-
My millennial nephews and nieces make fun of me when I say ice box.
Yup, it’ll always be the “Ice Box” and it will be powered by the “Light Company”, the folks that sends you the “Light Bill”…. don’t get me started on “Coal Oil” 😀

ShannonI’ll tell ya one dang thing, our cars have trunks.
NOT bonnets.I’m pretty sure the bonnet is what the Brits call the hood.
-
Car pocket sounds like some kind of Yankee lingo.
Glove box was the choice of my grandparents and parents.
-
I’m pretty sure the bonnet is what the Brits call the hood.
Yup. They call the trunk the boot
-
Blinkers are those yellow traffic lights in most of the towns around here designating where the two streets of the town cross. Turn signals are what you do with your arms with the window down to indicate what you are planning to do. I never figured out what those little things that make the front and back tail lights blink are, but you will never seen one in operation on a Houston freeway.
I’ve already got airplane purchase fever, and now SD puts up Draco. I’d settle for a little C172 at this point. Not like I’ve got anywhere to go, but just toodeling around over the highland lakes would be nice once the weather cools.
-
The only other name I’ve heard it called is glove compartment.
-
BTW, I was supposed to take my stitches out today, but I forgot. Need more light to see, so guess I’ll do it tomorrow.
-
74 is the new 62!
Goodnight, everyone!
-
My grandparents called the store-bought sliced bread in a bag “light bread”.
-
BTW, I was supposed to take my stitches out today, but I forgot.
How’d that surgery go?
-
Just fine – didn’t feel a thing. Wound up with a 2 1/2 inch scar on my neck so guess that little bugger was growing just underneath the skin. Overall, pretty painless. Got another one coming off my nose at the end of the month. Hope this doesn’t get to be a regular event.

Comments on link in #131.
What is QAnon, the conspiracy theory group showing up to Trump rallies?
Deep State plants, maybe?
Under the radar until now, they are members of the fringe, right-wing group QAnon which believes in massive conspiracies in the media and the so-called “deep state” to take down Trump.
Massive conspiracies in the media–Check, I’m with them on that.
and the so called Deep State.
–So called? Yes there is no ongoing attempt to remove the president from office.
they are members of the fringe, right-wing group QAnon
Isn’t anyone who doesn’t get their Deep State sponsored NewSpeak programmed thoughts from inFluxx News, CannotseeNN, NPR, NYSlimes, MSLSD or the Associated Propagandists considered fringe and right wing?
As The New York Times reported, some who adhere to the Q group believe it’s a symbol that it exists; others online believe it shows Trump, himself, is “Q.”
So Trump is now a the Putin Puppet Q dude who beats up on the ever so squeaky clean Newspeak Media which in turn causes Jim Acousted to wet his pants.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
and there’s your buffalo shot.
If I didn’t know better I’d say that article is right out of the Deep State playbook but there is no Deep State.
Maybe Q works for President Trump and President Trump really is James Bond.

I’ve just about wrapped up a two month, three surgery melanoma ordeal. First one was just an excision, no stitches, but it came back positive. Next one was a cut from the corner of my eye down the length of my nose where it meets my face. That one was 16 stitches. It was healing up nicely but the biopsy indicated they didn’t get it all. Third time they sliced me open in the exact same spot and removed more skin. That was pure torture for about a week. Got stitches out last week and the biopsy came back clear, thank God. I looked like the Elephant man for a while. I think this is some of that white privilege I keep hearing about.

It gets weirder.
QAnon adherents believe that the Mueller investigation is actually a countercoup led by Donald Trump, and that Mueller is working to expose the Democrats. They believe that Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and George Soros are trafficking children and are also planning a coup. They believe that Donald Trump’s enemies, including Huma Abedin and John McCain, wear ankle bracelets so that Trump can track their whereabouts; that J.P. Morgan sank the Titanic; that the Rothschilds family are the leaders of a satanic cult; and that certain Hollywood stars are pedophiles.
Ok, that last one is pretty common knowledge.
-
All this weird stuff.
I’m telling ya it’s the weird 20teens replay of the sixties.
Please don’t bring the Dem Convention here. It’s going to be a bloodbath.
And keep an eye on Portland this weekend. Antifa is primed for a riot.

Bald.
Scar.
And they’re still hanging off of him.The end is near.

The things they can accomplish with drugs these days is just amazing.

Take good care on that melanoma Brother.
Lost my mother to that dastardly one.

Tony Bennett turned 92 today and is headed back out on tour in a few days.

Bennett must love his work. You gotta figure he’s been living out of hotel room for seventy years.

Is Adee off on a cruise? I haven’t seen any posts from her for a while.

Ok, I kilt the blog once already today, let me try again with this: https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2018/08/03/fbi-vault-release-fbi-requested-data-forensics-on-huma-abedin-clinton-laptop-after-the-2016-election-not-before/
Guarantee your eyes will glaze over. I recently heard Hugh Hewitt recommend that Trump FIRE AG Sessions and get someone else in to try to clean up the Justice Dept.
