Elvin Hayes and Lew Alcindor in the Astrodome

But in 1968, college basketball barely qualified as a major American sport. There were two specific games that changed the paradigm and turned men’s college hoops. One of them was Michigan State playing Indiana State for the 1979 national championship. Magic Johnson vs. Larry Bird. You know the deal.

The other was the “Game of the Century,” which was played Jan. 20, 1968. Reigning champion UCLA, riding a 47-game winning streak, played No. 2 Houston in front of 52,693 people at the Astrodome. At the time it was the largest paid audience to ever watch a basketball game. No. 1 UCLA had Lew Alcindor. No. 2 Houston had Elvin Hayes. Both teams were undefeated. It was the first national primetime telecast of a college basketball game in history.

The year 1968 was a tumultuous year by any standard.  It felt as if the world was coming apart.

February 8

At the South Carolina State campus, police open fire on students protesting segregation at Orangeburg’s only bowling alley. Three protesters die and 27 more are wounded. Nine officers are tried and acquitted of charges related to the use of force. A protest coordinator is convicted of inciting to riot, serves seven months in prison—and is pardoned 25 years later.

April 4

Martin Luther King Jr., in Memphis for the sanitation workers’ strike, is fatally shot on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. Gunman James Earl Ray, a white supremacist, flees the country. Over the next week, riots in more than 100 cities nationwide leave 39 people dead, more than 2,600 injured and 21,000 arrested.

Well, Remington and Mossberg have come out with pump shotguns with detachable magazines. Remington 870DM & Mossberg 590M.
Oddly enough, the Remington holds 6 rounds, same as the tactical 870 and the Mossberg holds 10. My latest Guns and Ammo and the American rifleman have articles on these shotguns.

Hoover then pressed Ocasio-Cortez, “You use the term ‘the occupation of Palestine.’ What do you mean by that?”

The 28-year-old socialist struggled, “Um… I think what I meant is … like … the settlements that are increasing in some of these areas and places where Palestinians are experiencing difficulty in access to their housing and homes.”

Hoover: “Do you think you can expand on that?”

    Ocasio-Cortez fumbled, “Yeah… I mean, I think … I’d … also just— I am not the expert on geo-politics on this issue.”

This young woman is in so far over her head, she’s drowning and doesn’t know it.

Scroll down for the PBS video here. The interviewer is being very kind and gentle with Ocasio-Cortez, but no amount of lifeline is going to save her.

I think she knew exactly what she was talking about and only “fumbled” when she realized she had said it out loud.

In a development that many predicted when she first announced that she was going to cave to the demands of activists and pull out of the film, the chances that audiences will ever see “Rub & Tug,” a film featuring a transgender massage parlor owner formerly to be played by Scarlett Johansson, are not looking good.

    and,

Johansson’s production company, These Pictures, was set to co-produce the film, but now that she’s no longer starring in the project, “it’s unclear” if her company will stay on, The Wrap reports. Also unclear is whether Joel Silver’s production company Silver Pictures will move forward with the project if These Pictures pulls out.

I followed this story not because I cared about the subject matter, but because I could see a politically correct train wreck coming and I couldn’t look away.

The comedian Jon Lovitz tried to explain free market entertainment economics to a crowd of imbeciles on Twitter who were hating on Johansson, but it was hopeless. He tried to make them realize this film wouldn’t get made without a big star and all the other people involved would be out of work – like electricians, makeup artists, costumers, carpenters, truck drivers, cameramen, etc.

As I wrote the word “tumultuous” this morning, I asked myself how many other words in the English language contain the letter “u” three or more times.

    You’d be surprised how many.

There is the unusually ubiquitous ubuntu system that doesn’t incur usurious interest because it is unambiguously free, even to unctuous, unscrupulous usufructuaries* in Uruguay.

Houston news outlets reporting explosions and evacuations at Western International Gas & Cylinders in Bellville. This plant is located out in the country, about halfway between Bellville and Hempstead. Western International bills themselves as the largest wholesaler of acetylene in the world.

Hope everyone out there is okay. It’s a large local employer.

  13. Shannon Avatar

A byproduct of acetylene manufacturing is massive quantities of lime. They have a huge pit across the highway from plant. If you see lime being put out on a construction site, it probably came from that pit.

During the interview, Ocasio-Cortez also made troubling remarks about the U.S. economy after Hoover noted that the economy under the Trump administration is strong with an unemployment rate hovering around 4%.

“Well, I think, the numbers that you just talked about is part of the problem,” Ocasio-Cortez replied. “Because we look at these figures and we say ‘unemployment is low, everything is fine, right?’”

“Well, unemployment is low because everyone has two jobs,” Ocasio-Cortez falsely stated. “Unemployment is low because people are working 60, 70, 80 hours a week and can barely feed their kids.”

Ocasio-Cortez continued by saying, “Capitalism has not always existed in the world and will not always exist in the world,” before falsely stating that America was not pro-capitalist at its inception.

I don’t know whether this is a reflection on her IQ or the uselessness of her international economics degree from Boston University (tuition: $52,816). Probably both.

Acetylene is a hydrocarbon consisting of two carbon atoms and two hydrogen atoms. Its chemical symbol is C 2 H 2 . For commercial purposes, acetylene can be made from several different raw materials depending on the process used.

The simplest process reacts calcium carbide with water to produce acetylene gas and a calcium carbonate slurry, called hydrated lime. The chemical reaction may be written as CaC 2 + 2 H 2 O → C 2 H 2 + Ca(OH) 2 .

Speaking of uxorious, I have a little tale about the Latin word for wife. In slightly less modern times, if a married couple bought a house, the traditional way for real estaters to entitle the deed was “John Smith et ux Mary Smith” — husband and wife. Now back when Hubs and I bought this house, we were not married. We had been married in the 60’s, but then divorced for about 25 years. When we went to closing, I wanted my name to be listed first because I was putting in the down payment. So on our deed, it says “M Harper et al D Harper”. Et alia simply means “and others”.

Pretty soon we were getting junk mail for home products addressed to M and Al Harper.

Virgin Mary weeping scented olive oil tears.

I share here, for the first time, a similar experience.

Years ago, in the period B.C. (before children), Hubby and I took a motorcycle trip through the Hill Country of Texas. At one motel I found a flyer for a Russian Orthodox Monastery which had an icon of Mary that wept tears of myrrh. I’ve always felt a special affinity for Mary and have made her my personal saint and role model. We decided to visit and see the icon for ourselves. (Hubby was very uxorious.)

When we arrived, I was given a long skirt and scarf to cover myself, and we took the tour of the monastery. At the end, we were allowed a moment in front of the icon. She was behind a protective glass, and between the icon and the glass, at the bottom, were cotton balls placed there to capture the myrrh to be given away. There were miracles and healings attributed to the use of the myrrh.

I had no idea what to expect -indeed, I expected nothing except to spend a few moments in prayer – but as I stood there, a warmth poured over me, starting at my head and covering me completely. I began crying for no reason, except that the feeling was so strong and overwhelming, and my spirit was moved. I hated to move away, but there were others waiting. After my few moments were up, I reluctantly left my spot in front of the icon and allowed the next person their time in my place. It took me a few minutes before I could speak.

That moment has always stayed with me. Being Catholic, I believe that the saints help guide us toward Jesus. That day, I felt like a door had been cracked open just a tiny bit….

I pray that everyone here has an experience like that.

    Just perfect.

    Spengler:

American efforts to promote a democratic opposition to Putin have failed miserably, and as John Lloyd wrote recently at Reuters, the Russian president remains genuinely popular. This remains a source of perpetual frustration for the neoconservatives, who cannot fathom why dictatorships still exist. Russia is a brutal country that always has been governed by brutal men. No-one talks about Ivan the Reasonable. Compared to Peter the Great or Alexander II, let alone Stalin or Ivan the Terrible, Putin is one of Russia’s gentler heads of state. I attempted to explain why in this 2016 essay for Asia Times.

Thanks to President Trump, Russia (as well as China) now understands that America’s intervention in Iraq was not a deliberate effort to destabilize the region, and that its support for Sunni jihadists in Syria was not a deliberate effort to create an Islamist monster with which to destabilize Russia. Under the headline “They’ll never believe we’re that stupid,” I wrote in May 2015: “Beijing and Moscow made up their minds some time ago that the United States had deliberately unleashed chaos on the Levant as part of a malevolent plan of some kind. The Chinese and Russians (and most of the rest of the world) simply cannot process the notion that the United States is run by clueless amateurs who stumble from one half-baked initiative to another, with no overall plan (except, of course, to persuade the Persians to become America’s friends rather than enemies). …Incompetence has consequences. One of the consequences will be that our competitors and adversaries will take us for knaves instead of fools, or even worse, will recognize that we are fools after all.”

A former day care provider who hanged a toddler in her Minneapolis home was let off the hook by a judge who cited a “perfect storm” of events in sentencing her to probation.

Nataliia Karia avoided prison time despite pleading guilty to attempted murder, third-degree assault and criminal vehicular operation for hitting a pedestrian, a bicyclist and another driver as she fled from her home in November of 2016.

A father was dropping off his son at Karia’s home when he found a toddler hanging from a noose in the basement. He released the child, and the 16-month-old boy survived.

Karia fled in her vehicle, striking a bicyclist and dragging another motorist 10 blocks after striking his car, according to the Star Tribune. The bicyclist needed a rod inserted in his leg to avoid amputation, according to the newspaper.

I’ve always despised sentencing guidelines in the courts, but this is why we keep getting them.

Well, seeing as how the US Navy was able to use mechanical analog computers to fire 14″ guns while the ship was underway and hit other moving ships at 17 miles distance in 1914, I think they’ve got a handle on the weight/distance/speed calculations required today.

Wouldn’t it be much simpler and cheaper, not to mention far more sanitary, to put up 50 port-a-cans or so in the problem areas and service them a couple of times a week? This is really not a complicated problem, feces wise; the used needles are a different sort of problem.
It is hard to not notice the contrast between the image of uber liberal SF being a beautiful place to live and the reality of ridiculously high cost to rent/own a dwelling and the lack of middle class. Apparently, Channel 2 accidentally got the scoop on the murderer’s arrest.

A Channel 2 photographer witnessed the incident unfold. Cesar Martinez was shooting video outside a home on Foxburo Drive, where a home invasion Rodriguez is suspected to have committed took place. Martinez said he saw a person fitting Rodriguez’s description drive by slowly in a gray vehicle.

“This Nissan comes rolling up and this guy looks straight at me and I’m like, ‘He looks like the guy.’ So I started shooting (video of) him.” Martinez said. “I didn’t see a guy who was nervous, a guy who was being hunted. He was just casually driving through the neighborhood.”

Martinez said once deputies started chasing Rodriguez, he pulled over briefly and then sped away.

“They’re passing stop signs, they’re passing lights up, they’re speeding down the side roads, going in and out of the neighborhood,” Martinez said.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said they had been canvassing the area after a resident reported a suspicious person in the neighborhood, when they spotted Rodriguez’s vehicle.

Investigators said they believe Rodriguez was casing the area where his parents live for his next victim as a gun was found in the Nissan he was driving.

The perp’s parents live in the neighborhood. It’s not a barrio or ghetto over there. He may be a cartel member, but it looks like he’s probably a US citizen.
