Well, that’s ONE explanation for why some of them walk so funny.

Hosni Mubarek may not be long among the living. H/T http://www.jpost.com.

Deposed Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak’s “health is deteriorating drastically,” an Egyptian security official told London-based Arabic language newspaper a-Sharq al-Awsat on Tuesday.

The source added that those around Mubarak were refusing attempts to bring him abroad – most likely to Germany – to receive medical care and that attempts to do so have been rebuffed by those around him who wish to honor his desire to “let him die in his country.” “I think it’s only a matter of time,” he said. It is “unfortunate that [it] ends up this way.”

Caroline Glick gives a sobering look from the Israeli side of the Egyptian question.

The Muslim Brotherhood has been outspoken in its call to end the treaty since it was signed 32 years ago.

Whatever ends up happening, it is clear that Israel is entering a new era in its relations with Egypt. And before we can begin contending with its challenges, we must first consider the legacy of the peace treaty that then prime minister Menachem Begin signed with then Egyptian president Anwar Sadat on March 26, 1979.

Read the article, it is well worth the time invested.

Good morning all. It’s the Ides of February, which probably doesn’t have anything historically overwhelming connected with it–except it was 54 this morning and not below freezing.

So Sheriff Joe has been mentioned as a candidate to replace Jon Kyl in the Senate from AZ. I hope he runs. I’ll donate to his campaign. Somebody has to balance McCain’s liberalism that turns back on once he’s won an election.

So The One’s mania for high-speed rail keeps chugging on. And the Metrophiles here are whooping it up because of $$ proposed for the Toy Train. Ahem, conservatives in the House need to eliminate funds for any and all of the HSR request. It’s ripe for rejection. We’re broke, and how many ways must we say it before the progressive thick skulls get it?

I listened this morning to Senator Cornyn and a few others talking about the Obama budget and how it was going to require some paring back, blah, blah, blah….I believe that is the same Senator Cornyn who voted for the original TARP bill which opened the door to our current spending insanity and the same Senator Cornyn who tried to run RINOs all over the country in his capacity as NRSCC chairman and a few other sins that I won’t go into here. The point is, there is one way to stop all the insanity in its tracks, including Obamacare, outrageous deficit spending, and learning to live within our means – simply do not allow the debt ceiling to increase. Whatever we have coming in is what we have to live on – no more borrowing. All the Dems are running around screaming that the sky is falling when seeing a half-axxed effort by the Republicans to cut something somewhere just so they can say that they did. If they are serious, they will refuse to increase the debt limit. That will be the acid test or the best measure of whether our congress will make an effort to save our nation. Cut it out, stop it. Let Bonner go on TV a cry about how tough it is to make the difficult decisions or whatever, but as Nancy Reagan used to say – just say no.

I’d just like to make it clear that I had nothing to do with this.

Someone put up a poster at the vacant site where PETCO wants to move in, located at 5411 Geary Blvd., advertising the space as as a combo discount vet and taxidermy service. The poster was taken down over the weekend.

“One way or another you’ll be happy with my work,” the poster read. It included a drawing of a 1950s-style man with a smoking pipe in his mouth.

Silvio Berlusconi is having a Lewinski moment.

MILAN (AP) – An Italian judge on Tuesday ordered Premier Silvio Berlusconi to stand trial on charges he paid for sex with a 17-year-old Moroccan girl, then tried to cover it up.

I wonder if he can use the “that all depends on what the meaning of ‘is’ is” defense. He represents a long line of powerful men who lost it all when they thought with the wrong part of the anatomy.
Does the phrase “lust of the flesh” mean anything these days? I think the CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE is growing weary of being mocked and the big slap-down is coming.

Arlen Spector, Mike Castle, Charlie Crist come to mind off hand. It’s been a while, but I’m sure that I could do some research and find some others – I think there was a race in Colorado and who could ever forget Carly Fiorina. I’m not a Cornyn hater as many suggest, but I’ve certainly been disappointed in some of his decisions.

Cornyn’s job was to get Republicans elected to the Senate. Once Fiorina (as an example) won the Republican primary, she was the only candidate who he could support. I don’t recall him overtly supporting specific Republicans over others in the primaries.

    As evidenced by:

Sen. John Cornyn (Texas), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), said his organization will do everything to help conservative candidate Marco Rubio beat Charlie Crist.Cornyn said Crist had not yet informed him of his decision to run as an independent candidate for Senate in Florida, but โ€œthat appears the direction itโ€™s headed.โ€

    And this:

โ€œLet there be no mistake: The National Republican Senatorial Committee โ€“ and I personally as the committeeโ€™s chairman โ€“ strongly stand by all of our Republican nominees, including Christine Oโ€™Donnell in Delaware.

โ€œI reached out to Christine this morning, and as I have conveyed to all of our nominees, I offered her my personal congratulations and let her know that she has our support. This support includes a check for $42,000 โ€“ the maximum allowable donation that we have provided to all of our nominees โ€“ which the NRSC will send to her campaign today.

Something for the folks who got all warm and fuzzy over Joe Straus’ committe appointments

When The Dallas Morning News canvassed state lawmakers about whether they support expanding gambling in Texas, we found that the chances weren’t looking good for legislation to allow slots at racetracks and resort-style casinos in Texas this session.

But of the nine House members appointed to the Licensing & Administrative Prodedures committee, which oversees gambling legislation, only two told the News that they would definitely not support any expansion. Others on the committee supported gambling, were undecided or didn’t respond.

Speaker Joe Straus’ family has large investments in Texas horse racing. He has stepped back from any gambling debates, but his choices for the committees have raised eyebrows.

Rep. Chente Quintanilla was appointed as the committee’s vice chair and has proposed a constitutional amendment to legalize and regulate gaming in the state by an election.

To be fair, the question asked to Cornyn about Christine O’Donnell did not have any answer that could not have been spun to mean whatever the questioner wanted it to mean.

As we see, even making no comment was made to mean something.

How about “We will support whoever wins the primary, whether it’s Castle or O’Donnell.”? That would have been an unambiguous answer to a hypothetical question. His hesitancy to give that answer created doubt, whether he meant it that way or not.

Yep those Egyptians are a nice lot

On Friday February 11, the day Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak stepped down, CBS correspondent Lara Logan was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for a “60 Minutes” story when she and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration. It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into frenzy.

In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers. She reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning. She is currently in the hospital recovering.

There will be no further comment from CBS News and Correspondent Logan and her family respectfully request privacy at this time.

I was delighted to learn that its been optioned as as movie. Thats not always good news, but here’s some promising information:

Screen play is to be written by Larry McMurtry and his partner Diana Ossana and the project is being honchoed by Ridley Scott. The Director is to be Scott Cooper, who directed Crazy Heart.

Let hope they don’t PC it up too much. With McMurtry involved I think we can hope more for Lonesome Dove rather than Geronimo An American Legend.

Don’t get too excited. McMurtry and Ossana also did the screenplay for Brokeback Mountain. There’s always the chance they portray Quanah Parker as the homosexual lover of Burk Burnett as they sneaked out to their “special place” along the Goodnight Trail.

Dr. Sanity has an excellent article on democracy and liberty.

I have noticed lately that many people tend to confuse democracy, which can be a very good system of governmnet under certain circumstances; with individual freedom, which is what people all over the world, in every culture and time have fought and died for.
It is not democracy that our Founders so firmly believed in, it is liberty.
Democracy is basically rule by an omnipotent majority. There is nothing in a democracratic form of government which protects individuals, or any group of individuals who happen to be in a minority, against the unlimited power of the majority.

There is an interesting companion book for anyone wishing to pursue the subject more. Myth, Memory, and Massacre is more for the history geek than general consumption. Its about the different ways the story of Battle of Pease River, where Cynthia Ann Parker was recaptured, have been told and an examination of the veracity of each. One of the things one gets out of it is that John Freakin Kerry is not the first Democrat to embellish his military resume for political gain. Sul Ross told several different stories about the fight, his involvement and heroism increasing along with the importance of the office he was seeking at the time.

The issue I intended to raise earlier is not that of the fitness of Senator Cornyn as a conservative – the issue is one of stopping government spending. I fell for the trap set by Sarge to deflect the issue, and that is my fault. As far as the record of Senator Cornyn and the actions of the NRSC in the last round of elections, just Google up the names and you can research to your heart’s content.
DeMint and Cornyn disagreed on some candidates in the primaries, particularly Crist versus Rubio in Florida, and the records are pretty clear in numerous articles available with a search. And still never forget – Senator did vote in favor of the initial TARP funding which opened the barn door to the Treasury.

I want to hear what kind of women in a Muslim country would stand up to a mob. Maybe they weren’t Egyptian women. Or maybe they were Egyptian, but young and educated.

#66 Hamathoritarian, at this point I doubt that you could comprehend my thoughts even if you perceived them accurately.

Bobo thinks bell curves are a construct of right-wing authoritarian Christians. โ€œNormalโ€ is an intangible concept and is to be defined only by those the aforementioned authoritarians consider abnormal. Other nebulous concepts in Bobo World are man, woman, IQ, right, wrong, black, white, human, up, down, left, right. Abnormal is the new normal!

Once again your mind reading skills fall far short of the mark, and you are incredibly wrong, both on bell curves and their origins. I really thought you were smarter than that. (I wonder if that that may be related to your hypersensitivities.)

Bell curves sometimes but not always appear as a result of statistical analysis of data, and can be sometimes be useful in a predictive manner based on historical data. You could not be more wrong about my understanding of them, but I do appreciate the entertainment factor.

As I recall after Murkowski lost the primary to Miller, Cornyn promised to remove Murkowski from her leadership positions. Given that she lost the Republican primary election and all. Never happened. Screw the tea party support Miller had. After the general election, Cornyn sent an aide to Murkowski. Cornyn is of the same entrenched repubie wing as Joe Straus.

    #74 M42, could I trouble you for a brain sample? It’s nothing personal. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hamsters are thought to be anxious or depressed if they spend more time near the walls of their cages instead of staying in the center; if they forgo sugar water; and if they float in water. Apparently, hamsters don’t sink, they float. But if they swim and are active in the water, it’s a sign of being content, as opposed to just floating.

In this study, researchers housed both male and female Siberian hamsters in containers that were created to mimic long summer days or short winter days. These were simulated with 16 hours of light and eight hours of light, respectively. After 10 weeks in these containers, hamsters were given the “float or sink test” and then had their brains removed 48 hours later. They were tested for anxiety and depression, seen by hippocampal and cell body size. Researchers said they found their results showed a link between the amount of light hamsters received and their attitudes. The less light hamsters received the more anxious or depressed they were perceived to be. Also, hamsters born in wintertime tended to be more susceptible to SAD than those hamsters born in summertime.

I’ve long thought that exposure to sunlight is good for one’s health (mental and physical) and today added a tad more to the heap of evidence supporting my hypothesis. For the first time since January 4th, my mom got some good sunshine.

I helped her into the wheel chair, and as we headed out, joked to the (way cute) nurses that I was kidnapping her and that they could find the ransom note on her bed. We stole some coffee and spent the rest of the visit outside, enjoying the cool breeze and the beautiful spring-like day.

While enjoying the trip, she told me that she still wants to die ASAP, and that’s kinda hard for a guy to hear. I told her that I was honor bound to uphold her wishes, and that whether that happened in two hours, two days, two weeks, or two years, my concern was her quality of life in between.

Whether she likes it or not, she’s getting better, and I’m getting better at driving the wheelchair (we had some close encounters with walls and stuff.)

Bob, it is good that you tend to your mother, and I am glad that you do, for your sake and for hers. But in most other respects, you reveal yourself here to be quite a jerk. And that is fine with me.
