Battle of Coleto Creek at Goliad

The battle of Coleto, the culmination of the Goliad Campaign of 1836, occurred near Coleto Creek in Goliad County on March 19 and 20, 1836. Originally called “the battle of the prairie” and “la batalla del encinal [oak grove] del Perdido [Creek],” it was one of the most significant engagements of the Texas Revolution. The battle, however, cannot properly be considered as isolated from the series of errors and misfortunes that preceded it, errors for which the Texas commander, James W. Fannin, Jr., was ultimately responsible. The most exasperating decision confronting Fannin was whether to abandon Goliad after having fortified it, and if so, when. He had already been informed of Gen. José de Urrea’s advancing Mexican army by Plácido Benavides, after the defeat of Texas forces under Francis W. Johnson and James Grant at the battles of San Patricio and Creek Agua Dulce. The Mexican advance caused the Texans to abandon the port of Copano, thus making Goliad considerably less important strategically, as Fannin knew. He had received word that the Alamo had fallen as well. Still, he continued to fortify Fort Defiance, as he christened the La Bahía presidio, and awaited orders from superiors to abandon the site, knowing also that a retreat would not be well received among his men, who were eager to confront the Mexicans.

Alabama Red Rovers

The Red Rovers, a volunteer military company that participated in the Texas Revolution as a unit of the Lafayette Battalion of James W. Fannin’s regiment, was organized by its captain, Jack Shackelford, at Courtland, Alabama, in November 1835 and named for the fact that its members were uniformed in red jeans. The company, which mustered about seventy men, was equipped with rifles and military supplies from the Alabama state arsenal.  The Red Rovers remained in camp at Courtland until December 12, 1835, when they started for Texas; they landed at New Orleans on January 1, 1836. After being inspected by Stephen F. Austin and Nicholas Adolphus Sterne, the company reached Texas on January 19, 1836. The men remained at Dimitt’s Landing until accepted for Texas service on February 3. They were publicly entertained when they arrived at Victoria on their way to Goliad. Dr. Joseph H. Barnard accompanied the unit from Matagorda to Goliad, where the Red Rovers arrived on February 12 and were assigned to the Lafayette Battalion. During the Goliad Campaign of 1836 they were sent on several local expeditions, including two to the Carlos Rancho. On March 18 they extricated Albert C. Horton’s men from Aranama Mission, where they were besieged by the Mexicans. At the battle of Coleto the Red Rovers occupied the extreme right of the front side of the square and acquitted themselves like veterans. The unit was surrendered with Fannin’s regiment, and most of the men sustained a common fate in the Goliad Massacre.

Fannin was a dismal failure at Goliad. Houston ordered him to retreat ASAP to Victoria via messenger on March 14th. He screwed around for 5 days until the 19th before they tried to leave.

He got 300 men killed at Goliad. Now, they might eventually have died at Victoria, but that’s the whole alternative history game.

The entire Texas Revolution is characterized by bad Leadership and poor decisions, ending in a fortunate accident of geography and timing.

Proof that God had a hand in it. Left to men, we’d all be speaking Spanish and trying to cross the Sabine into Louisiana to get jobs.

This will not go on forever and will end badly for a lot of people.

The director of the Criminal Police Association (Bund Deutscher Kriminalbeamter, BDK), André Schulz, estimates that up to 90% of the sex crimes committed in Germany do not appear in the official statistics.

German police frequently omit any references to migrants in crime reports. When they do, they often refer to migrant criminals with politically correct euphemisms such as “southerners” (Südländer), men with “dark skin” (dunkelhäutig, dunklere Gesichtsfarbe, dunklem Hauttyp) or a combination of the two: “southern skin color” (südländische Hautfarbe). This practice, apparently aimed at delinking the attackers with Islam, makes it virtually impossible for German citizens to help police identify suspects.

“There is a strict order by the authorities to not report on crimes committed by refugees,” a high-ranking police official in Frankfurt told Bild. “Only specific requests from media representatives about such acts are to be answered.”

Germany’s migrant rape crisis has continued into 2018. Despite the mounting human toll, many of the crimes are unreported or downplayed as isolated incidents (Einzelfall) by German authorities and the media, apparently to avoid fueling anti-immigration sentiments.

Here’s an article I ran across that provides a little more info on the “Diversity Bridge” which collapsed in Florida a few days ago. It provides more in depth review of the efforts to promote women in the STEM programs at FIU and other colleges across the country. It doesn’t quote Barbie the Doll, but it may as well have – “Math is hard.” Apparently FIU is working overtime to erase or deflect the role diversity played in the bridge. Hey, it’s government money, which is free money you know, and if you have to kill a few people in the name of diversity, so what.

I have grandma duty today while LD and AB close on their new home in Dallas and do other new-house stuff.

It makes me sad that they are moving further away. /sniff

LD2 sure has got attitude. I had to wake her up so I could get them both off to the school they just love love love here. Despite the reward of going to school, she buried her head in her pillow and refused to talk to me for about a half hour. (I ignored her and focused on getting Sunshine ready until LD2 realized that sulking wasn’t going to get her any attention.) That meant she didn’t tell me what she wanted for breakfast until about ten minutes before we had to leave. After that she was all chirpy and happy.

She mentioned on the way to school that she “didn’t get good sleep last night”. I relate to that sentiment, neither did I. I told her that she could take a good long nap when I pick them up at 2 this afternoon. “You won’t wake me up?” LD2 asked. I assured her that she could sleep all she wanted when she got home.

LD2 is getting a jump on puberty and the whole sleeping thing.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and his team have found the wreckage of USS Juneau (CL-52), which sank in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal.

This ship is noteworthy in that it is the ship the five Sullivan brothers served on, and ultimately were killed on. The Navy later named a destroyer in their honor: USS The Sullivans.

Noor was in the passenger seat and fired across his partner, Matthew Harrity, killing Damond. [District Attorney] Freeman said he would decide whether to charge Noor in Damond’s death, but convened a grand jury to gather additional evidence. Freeman said he convened the grand jury because several Minneapolis police officers refused to cooperate with the investigation into Damond’s death.

The officers who refused to cooperate should be dismissed from the force at the very least, if not also charged with obstruction.

Spouse just spied a squirrel on our back porch diligently wrestling with a substantial bath towel draped over a patio chair, trying to pull it down and having zero luck. Suspect the towel weighs more than the squirrel, and the towel was not budging. Do not know who in a squirrel amour setting does the nest building, or if both parents do. Anyway the towel obviously looked just right for maybe a dozen or so nests.

A woman in the neighborhood had been posting for 2 days that she could hear a frog making frog-croak noises in her upstairs bathroom pipes. She thought it was trapped in the P-trap under the sink and wanted someone to come help her open the pipe and see what was there. So a male friend did go over this evening and took the trap off — nothing was found there, but they could still hear the croaking every now and then. A search of all the cabinets in the room turned up a toy plastic flashlight that has 4 buttons to make animal sounds. She thinks it has been at least 3 years since her grandson had last played with it. Apparently as the battery had weakened, it was chirping off every now and then to call attention to itself.

I followed that story from the beginning. It still bothers me and there are so many questions at the margins I am not sure what to think about the shooting.

It was weird. The victim called 911 about a suspected sexual assault occurring in the dark alley behind her house. The cops came by, didn’t attempt to make contact with the caller/victim, cruised through the alley with their lights out and then stopped at the end of it.

The caller/victim came out of her house dressed in a nightgown or pajamas (barefoot if I recall) and walked in the dark to the end of the alley where the cops had stopped. She surprised them in the dark at the patrol car driver’s window in her nightclothes with no warning in a pitch black dark alley. What the hell was she thinking ?

There are no words to describe how stupid that was.

She was a popular, beautiful, well-known woman in that area and became an instant martyr. I don’t know whether the cop acted out of order or not. I think he probably freaked out, but may have been scared out of his wits, somewhat justifiably – or not. Perhaps she inadvertently made a move that scared the cops. I still don’t know, but I wouldn’t hang this immigrant cop out to dry just yet.

Not hanging it on the immigrant cop. I’m talking about his brethren that wouldn’t cooperate with the investigation.

#37 – I’m with you TP. The cop, being a muzzie, had no choice when a scantily clad attractive woman appeared. He had to kill her on the spot as he otherwise might have become aroused. But don’t worry. The DA charged him with something but then appointed a female prosecutor to handle the case. She’ll screw it up and he’ll get off and all with be right with the world. Muzzie happy not to get aroused, female prosecutor happy to get some attention in the courtroom, DA happy to say he did his job and charged him, and muzzie walks away on a not guilty. See if it doesn’t wind up playing out this way.

    RE: #37

Why didn’t the responding officers contact the woman, the local resident, who called into 911 originally ?

Why did the woman come out the rear of her home, suspecting a criminal sexual assault taking place in that dark alley, not sure police were on the scene, and walk around in her nightclothes ? Then she creeps up on the squad car from behind and pops up in the driver’s side window of the car ?

The whole thing is very, very strange.

My guess is that who ever was doing this is long gone from Austin by now, but you never know with those kooks who enjoy playing cat and mouse with the police. Problem for the kook is there are lots of eyes watching now, and it’s impossible to cruise around anywhere without getting noticed by a cam of some kind. I just heard Mark Levin on 740AM talk with Thomas Sowell about his new book.

    https://www.amazon.com/Discrimination-Disparities-Thomas-Sowell/dp/154164560X

An empirical examination of how economic and other disparities arise

Economic and other outcomes differ vastly among individuals, groups, and nations. Many explanations have been offered for the differences. Some believe that those with less fortunate outcomes are victims of genetics. Others believe that those who are less fortunate are victims of the more fortunate.

Discrimination and Disparities gathers a wide array of empirical evidence from to challenge the idea that different economic outcomes can be explained by any one factor, be it discrimination, exploitation or genetics.

It is readable enough for people with no prior knowledge of economics. Yet the empirical evidence with which it backs up its analysis spans the globe and challenges beliefs across the ideological spectrum.

The point of Discrimination and Disparities is not to recommend some particular policy “fix” at the end, but to clarify why so many policy fixes have turned out to be counterproductive, and to expose some seemingly invincible fallacies–behind many counterproductive policies.
