A crisp 49 degrees in the driveway this morning. I left 8 minutes late and got to work 20 minutes late. I guess that would be a geometric progression.
Firsticus!

I was in a deli with a friend to eat lunch the other day and he came to the table with this bottle of “kombucha tea”. I asked him what it was and he didn’t know.
It appears this is some new hipster drink I’m not not hip enough to be aware of.
WebMD:
Kombucha tea is POSSIBLY UNSAFE for most adults when taken by mouth. It can cause side effects including stomach problems, yeast infections, allergic reactions, yellow skin (jaundice), nausea, vomiting, head and neck pain, and death.

He thought it was some new brand of bottled ice tea. It kind of looked like a Snapple container. He’s not dead because I talked to him yesterday.

2 things jump out at me when I scan the results:
1) 2 R incumbents lost in the primary
2) There are way too many uncontested seats, seats where there wasn’t even a token R to run against an D with no primary challenger, aka a giveaway. -
When I got up this morning to survey the heavy snowfall, there was virtually nothing on the ground.
You cannot believe the hysterical performances of the weather people across the TV spectrum yesterday. I thought the guy on local CBS was going to start crying. We were supposed to see 4-5 inches at dawn.
It is falling now and they are still predicting over a foot of snow. It’s not supposed to stop until 11 PM.

The stark, raving lunatics have taken over in South Africa.
HEADLINE: Racist South African Political Leader Julius Malema: “Go After the White Man… We Are Cutting the Throat of Whiteness”
In 2011 South Africa youth leader Julius Malema told his supporters that the white farmer’s land must be shared by all black Africans. And just so that there is no confusion between run of the mill black on white racism and shrieking lunacy, there is this:
HEADLINE: South African triathlete Mhlengi Gwala in hospital after attack with saw

“He thought they were coming to rob him, stopped and gave them his phone but they didn’t want his phone, didn’t want his watch or bicycle,” Shange said.“They dragged him to the side of the road to some bushes, took a saw and started cutting his legs.
“They kept on cutting and when they got to the bone, because the saw was not that sharp, the saw got stuck. When they saw it was getting stuck they started on the other leg.”
The saw in question was a frikken chain saw!

You know when you leave a beer bottle outside with a couple of swigs of beer in it for about a month in a Houston summer and this big slimy blob growth forms in the bottle? Thats kombucha.

Walter E. Williams on gun control hysteria.
HEADLINE: Hidden Agenda or Ignorance?
Before we discuss violence with guns, I’d like to run a couple of questions by you. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every day nearly 30 Americans die in motor vehicle crashes that involve drunk driving. What kind of restrictions should be placed on automobile ownership? Should there be federal background checks in order for people to obtain a driver’s license or purchase a car?The FBI’s 2015 Uniform Crime Report shows that nearly three times more people were stabbed or hacked to death than were killed with shotguns and rifles combined. The number of shotgun and rifle deaths totaled 548. People who were stabbed or hacked to death totaled 1,573. Should there be federal background checks and waiting periods for knife purchases?
Any mature and reasonable person would argue that it is utter nonsense to deal with drunk driving deaths and knife deaths by having federal background checks and waiting periods to obtain a driver’s license or to purchase a car or knife. One would recognize, just as courts and the general public do, that cars and knives are inanimate objects and cannot act on their own. Therefore, if we want to do something about deaths resulting from drunk driving or being stabbed or hacked to death, we must focus on individuals. It would be folly and gross negligence of victims for us to focus on inanimate objects like cars and knives. Guns are also inanimate objects and like cars and knives cannot act on their own. It’s also plain folly to focus on guns in the cases of shooting deaths.
Sublime simplicity in stating the obvious, yet this is lost on so many today. There is more, take the extra 5 minutes to read it.

Michael Berry must be talking nice about Trump again, I’ve noticed he’s back in the club.
-
Trump was barely on the radar scope when that happened. Berry’s show has gone from a waste of time to a total, complete waste of time. I still can’t figure out why CC takes what is probably some of the most valuable air time in the state of Texas and fills it with that dribble. Shows what I know about the radio business I guess. Maybe that why CC is broke.

Ted Cruz’s first general election campaign ad is out against Dem challenger Robert “Beto” O’Rourke and it’s a musical number that takes issue with the fact that O’Rourke is going by “Beto” and not Robert, accusing him of changing it to fit in:
“Liberal Robert wanted to fit in. So he changed his name to Beto. And hid it with a grin.”
Listen here:

Good day after election Hamsters. We had a very brisk 46 out here at 6, and now a vigorous north breeze amid sunshine everywhere has allowed it to make 55. Winter has not abdicated quite yet.
Election results were impressive for many incumbents and some challengers so there are some runoffs of interest. Time for the candidates to catch their breaths and fund some more campaign ads.
Now it will be interesting to learn what the out of state soothsayers and entrails examiners divine from the results of our first in the nation primaries. What of the Blue Wave Theory prognostication? Texas is still Texas and not quite like the rest of the states and US territories that vote as well. Neither is Alaska that is also a state of mind as well as a place, just not as potent as Texas.

He’s not dead because I talked to him yesterday.

The liberal dream of a blue Texas paradise may be premature.
In the senate race, all the Democrat candidates combined got 1,037,054 votes. Ted Cruz got 1,315,468 by himself with a total for all Republican candidates at 1,541,281.
Similarly for governor, all Dems got 1,017,257. Abbott got 1,390,788 and all Repubs got 1,538,498.
Looks like hate doesn’t win them races after all.

I was proud when I saw it reported that Texans owner Bob McNair said they would not be bring in any free agent players who were kneelers. Our former County Tax Assessor/Collector, Mr. Peña, recently pleaded guilty to charges of theft and misappropriation of government financial property ($150,000 to $300,000) and is awaiting trial for sentencing.
Now, the Bellville Municiple Court judge, Mrs. Resendez, was arrested Friday for theft ($30,000 to $150,000) and tampering with a government record. (Both 2nd degree felonies)
What is this, South Texas?

While waiting for my precinct convention to begin last night, I was helping the nice poll people pack up stuff, just prior to the 7:00 pm closing. There was a a lot of printing going on from those little machines….long rolls of what looked like the old printing calculator tapes, which printout had to be rolled up to be turned in at the election headquarters. While I put my college degree to good use, rolling up the printout, a few of the machines were closed down and being packed up.
Right at the last minute, a Democrap primary poll worker came over with a problem. It seems that a Hispanic woman came in to vote, told them she wanted to vote Republican, and was ushered to the Democrap side to sign in. She signed in and logged into a machine on that side of the room, then realized that none of her people were on the ballot.
Since she had signed in, the poll workers weren’t sure what to do. They finally got it figured out and she was able to vote in the right primary on one of the still open machines on our side.
Shenanigans, I say.
As I sat there, waiting, I saw several of my church members on the other side, voting Democrap. In my head I’m screaming “WHY — WHY—WHY????!!! YOU CAN’T BE A CATHOLIC *AND* A DEMOCRAP! DON’T DEAD BABIES MEAN ANYTHING TO YOU??!!!!”
But I was able to make acquaintance with a very nice lady named Leslie, who was filling out her convention paperwork while I filled out mine, and we had a lovely conversation.

I think its all part of Texpat’s plan to place a Jewish Princess on the throne of Austin County
I haven’t heard the term “Jewish Princess” in a while. Growing up, it was “Jewish American Princess”. I remember one joke:
What’s the difference between a new bride, a nymphomaniac, and a Jewish American Princess? (It’s better if you can hear the vocal intonation, I shall have to insert additional descriptives.)
New bride: (puzzled) “Is that all there is?”
Nymphomaniac: (disappointed, begging) “Is that all there is?”
Jewish American Princess: (bored, glancing about) “Beige…I think I’ll paint the walls beige…”Of course, there are lots of Protestant Princesses, too.

I finally figured out what is wrong with the OC picture. The lightening strike would normally strike the aluminum mast rather than something down on the boat itself.
In other news, the drug addled DA up in Waco who indicted close to 200 bikers where the police killed a number of them, lost his primary. He had visions of becoming governor or at least AG out of that deal, but instead, looks like he stepped on his crank. That was 3 years ago, one has actually gone to trial (mistrial), and the costs to the county for that trial alone was estimated in excess of $500,000. He has a line of former assistants and police detectives lined up to testify about his drug use, his favors for friends, his gambling associates, etc. Voters figured him out after a couple of terms.

I know I’ve been gone a while, but who are Pena and Resendez ? I don’t recall ever hearing their names.
-
My impression of the lightning is that it struck the land visible in the background.
-
South Texas, indeed.
Maybe this Marcus Pena is related to this woman.
Prosecutors have obtained five indictments against Starr County Tax Assessor Collector Maria Del Carmen Pena, charging her with 18 offenses, according to records obtained by CBS 4 News.
Investigators arrested Pena and 14 other people Wednesday, when they raided the Tax Assessor Collector’s Office.
According to the indictments, Pena embezzled at least $200,000 from the Tax Office from November 2010 to October 2012. Pena also conspired with clerks to backdate payments from taxpayers and make the transactions appear legitimate.
Investigators have said they believe approximately $700,000 in taxpayer funds were stolen.
This seems to be from several years ago, but the morons who run this news site don’t deem it necessary to date their articles online.
Investigators have arrested the following people, according to a news release from the Department of Public Safety.
Maria Del Carmen Pena – Starr County Tax Assessor
Maria Crisanta Gonzalez – Deputy Director Starr County Tax Office
Griselda Quezada – Deputy Clerk Starr County Tax Office
Mary Ann Lopez – Deputy Clerk Starr County Tax Office
Cynthia Rivas – Deputy Clerk Starr County Tax Office

#40 – That is a run of the mill happening when you put women into position of responsibility. No one should be surprised.
Has anyone ever gone crazy during a roof installation at their house? I’m into my second day of incessant hammering, loud bangs and shaking walls, etc. as the roofers go about their business. Maybe I’ll go crazy but not know it. I think most crazy people that I know do not know that they are crazy – they think they are normal and it’s the other folks who are acting strange. Who gets to decide who is crazy and who is not crazy when it comes to gun control – it’s Catchy-22 all over again. The Dems will just say that someone would have to be crazy to want to own a gun, and thus, all people who want to own guns will be disallowed because they are deemed crazy. Then the only people who can own guns are people who do not want to own them. Heck, even SCOTUS would probably go along with that logic. Anyway, get me a hammer and I’ll bang my head with it a few time to get into the roofer frame of mind.

You’re supposed to leave the house when they’re putting a new roof on.

Must be a mansion.
When they reroofed Katfish’s, they were in and out the same day, including some minor repairs. And his house isn’t exactly a cottage.

I’m worried El Gordo got some geriatric, decrepit cedar-hacker roofing crew for his house. The ones who live so far back in the hills they haven’t heard of compressors and roofing nail guns and are still using hammers to drive a single nail at a time. Might take them weeks.

And they’re having to wait on ELGordo to straighten out all of those used nails he’s been saving.

My wife has been brewing our own Kombucha for years now. I typically drink about 8oz in the morning and another 8oz in the evening. It helps to contribute to good gut flora which protects you from a myriad of bad bacteria you may come in contact with.
From Food Renegade.
Have you heard of Kombucha, the beverage the ancient Chinese called the “Immortal Health Elixir?” It’s been around for more than 2,000 years and has a rich anecdotal history of health benefits like preventing and fighting cancer, arthritis, and other degenerative diseases.
Made from sweetened tea that’s been fermented by a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast (a SCOBY, a.k.a. “mother” because of its ability to reproduce, or “mushroom” because of its appearance), Kombucha didn’t gain prominence in the West until recently.
KOMBUCHA HEALTH BENEFIT #1 — DETOXIFICATION
Detoxification produces healthy livers and aides cancer prevention. One of kombucha’s greatest health benefits is its ability to detox the body. It is rich in many of the enzymes and bacterial acids your body produces and/or uses to detox your system, thus reducing your pancreatic load and easing the burden on your liver. Kombucha is very high in Glucaric acid, and recent studies have shown that glucaric acid helps prevent cancer. I know 2 people in my immediate circle of friends who have had cancer (pancreatic and breast) and fought it into remission without any chemo or radiation therapy. Instead, they warded it off by detoxing their lives (going 100% organic, removing chemical cleaners and agents in their home, changing their diet to be at least 80% raw or fermented). Central to the detoxification process was drinking Kombucha regularly. Even Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the recently deceased Russian author and Nobel-prize winner, in his autobiography, claimed that kombucha tea cured his stomach cancer during his internment in Soviet labor camps. (And because of this testimony, President Reagan used Kombucha to halt the spread of his cancer in 1987. You’ll note he didn’t die until 2004, and that was from old age, NOT cancer.)KOMBUCHA HEALTH BENEFIT #2 — JOINT CARE
Kombucha contains glucosamines, a strong preventive and treatment all forms of arthritis. Glucosamines increase synovial hyaluronic acid production. Hyaluronic acid functions physiologically to aid preservation of cartilage structure and prevent arthritic pain, with relief comparable to NSAIDs and advantage over glucocorticoids. Hyaluronic acid enables connective tissue to bind moisture thousands of times its weight and maintains tissue structure, moisture, lubrication and flexibility and lessens free radical damage, while associated collagen retards and reduces wrinkles.KOMBUCHA HEALTH BENEFIT #3 — AIDS DIGESTION AND GUT HEALTH
Because it’s naturally fermented with a living colony of bacteria and yeast, Kombucha is a probiotic beverage. This has a myriad of benefits such as improved digestion, fighting candida (harmful yeast) overgrowth, mental clarity, and mood stability. As such, it’s noted for reducing or eliminating the symptoms of fibromyalgia, depression, anxiety, etc.KOMBUCHA HEALTH BENEFIT #4 — IMMUNE BOOSTING
Kombucha is extraordinarily anti-oxidant rich, and you all know the benefits of anti-oxidants for boosting your immune system and energy levels. The only reason it is a hipster drink is because those dolts are willing to pay $3.50 for a pint of the stuff. That is why we brew our own.

Rush was expounding on our primaries today and connecting the chain of evidence in total participation by each party’s adherents much as Hamous #27 has done. Plus the whopping majorities Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick, and Ted Cruz received and the Republicans in total over the Democrats in total. Rush opined that the Blue Wave scenario for Texas was a faint hope launched to boost Dem voting. And wondered how much outside money was spent to boost Dem totals. Haven’t we all wondered that?
The Chron as usual selectively used facts to make the Dems seem bigger and gave them more prominent space in the paper within the first few pages of Section A. When it gets around to printing the figures for each race as Bonecrusher #6 linked to, it shall be quite clear to anyone with more than a few brain cells what actually happened.
Right now it seems the Blue Wave turned out the be the Blue Burp.

Here’s another reason to get vaccinated against measles – researchers have found the measles virus makes kids’ immune systems “forget” most of what they have learned, leaving children vulnerable to other diseases for as long as three years.
The findings, published in the journal Science, help explain why deaths and illnesses from a range of diseases plummet in countries after they introduce measles vaccine campaigns.

Here’s why some lottery winners lives end up sucking:
A New Hampshire woman who won a $559.7 million Powerball jackpot will be donating roughly $250,000 of her winnings to charities that feed hungry children and help young girls in the state, her lawyers said.

I posted the Dem totals in San Saba on the prior OC this morning. They had 21 voters. And my roofers all speak English (or something close), except for the pit bull service dog that the crazy(iest) one brings with him. He keeps it chained to a tree. And the three man crew is not doing a hit and run on the roof. They are replacing everything except the wood. Got one rotted spot that will require some wood replacement. I took my nap today in the back of the house while they were pounding away on the front, so guess the noise is not as bad as I thought. I didn’t realize International Womens’ Day was coming. I’ll have to give some thought to what I’m going to do to celebrate.

With all the talk and hand-wringing over the Democratic voter surge from 2016 to the 2018 primary elections, you would think someone, anyone would bother to look at and compare the two elections.
The differences are significant and large.
The primary in 2016 had one race for president and the Democrats all knew who would win.
The only other 2016 statewide races were for the Railroad Commission, SBOE and judgeships.
The rest of the 2016 races were confined to local senate and house districts and most of them were uncontested, sometimes in both parties.
2016 Texas Democratic Primary Voter Total: 1,434,253
By contrast, the 2018 primary had races for governor, lieutenant governor, land commissioner, agriculture commissioner, attorney general, comptroller, railroad commissioner, U.S. Senate, judgeships and the SBOE.
There were also more contested races in U.S. House elections on both sides of the aisle.
There are all kinds logical reasons for a larger Democratic turnout, even taking into account it is a presidential midterm year.
2018 Texas Democratic Primary Voter Total: 1,017,959
The 2014 election, the last midterm contest, was a little different though, with only 546,523 Democrats turning out.

I guess I should have disclosed that Katfish’s contractor showed up with about fifteen guys. And by the way, they did a top notch job on a job with some tricky areas.

I did two complete roofs with Texpat. Dad’s ridiculously steep beach house with comp shingles and Mom’s house with V-crimp galvanized metal, back when that stuff was a lot thicker.
Hers was more of a challenge. Hand nailed -every one – on top of the V. Challenging valleys. Tying in a porch roof. Cutting every sheet.
No helpers!
Still looks outstanding after 30 years, or so.

Hand-nailed – every one – on top of the V.

The funniest part of that project was when I was on top of the roof on Christmas Eve morning finishing the very last pieces of flashing and trim around one of the chimneys. I was wearing my grandfather’s old bright red hunting coveralls straddling the roof ridge when a mother with her 3 year old girl came walking down the road and she started screaming, “Look, look, Mommy, there’s Santa Claus !”. Great moment.

They must’ve updated the article since, now it says –
A New Hampshire woman who won a $559.7 million Powerball jackpot will be donating up to $50 million of her winnings to charities that feed hungry children and help young girls in the state, her lawyers said.
If he is still around, I would go to Steve Drake. He handled lots of lottery winners finances back when. And yes Texpat, that is pretty much the routine.

Roofers sound like elephants are walking around above when you’re inside the house. Big jolt when they drop a bundle of shingles on the bare places, heavy and loud enough to make dishes rattle in the cupboards. It’s easy to be concerned that what they dropped will come all the way through the attic and into the room below.
And speaking of falling through the attic, I was on the phone with a friend when workmen were fixing something in their attic, and I could hear some muffled thumps through the phone. Suddenly she exclaimed Good Lord, a guy just fell through the ceiling in our bedroom! I asked if the fellow was hurt, to which she replied that he was unhurt, just rattled a bit, because he landed in the middle of their bed. We ended the conversation right there. Was trying to visualize what she witnessed, and must admit it must have been hilarious to see.
Then of course there was this hole ….
-
But I guess it won’t happen, I don’t remember the last time I played the lottery. Guess I figure I’ll get rich the old fashioned way, vote democrat and go for disability.

This was our old family homeplace. It used to look much different. There were two enormous pine trees in front and a circular brick driveway as well. There was another porch on the front of that wing on the right, but someone closed it in. The house is larger than it looks with additions made in the back over a century.
It is the oldest standing home in Austin County I know of, built around 1830 out of solid cypress hauled from North Carolina.

Adee, didn’t you have your roof replaced within the past year? If so, which company did you utilize?

#81 – dang not sure if I can recall that outfit – was January ’09 right after IKE.
The work ethic displayed was near machine like lemme tell ya!
1 boss and 12 worker bees (and the boss worked hard too!)2400 sq ft slab so I’m guessin roughly 3400sq roof more or less
strip off old asphalt shingles
AND cedar shakes
AND bang down thousands upon thousands of nails in the lathes
AND re-deck w radiant barrier
lay the felt
and re-shinglein a 10 hour day!
end of day ALL they lacked was ridge vents that were done the next morning2 FULL 5 ton truckloads of scrap hauled off
and not a single scrap of paper NOR one nail in my yard
(a few nails dribbled out of the rain spouts for a short while)It was amazing to watch – almost a “river of NEW” flowing across the house

Duran’s Roofing & Home Services in Richmond (281-342-4436) has done two roofs for us over the years, the most recent one a couple of years ago. Mr. Duran oversees excellent work, and if he’s not pleased with something, they do it over. 🙂
They are managing our repairs from Harvey’s ravages, did the sheetrock replacement and walls painting in mid–September, some 3 weeks after Harvey that put us ahead of the mob scene needing sheetrock work. That enabled us to get flooring installed about 10 days later, again ahead of the mob. We’re currently waiting on a bid for the final repair/replacement of water-damaged woodwork and interior doors. For this we are part of the mob and have been for several months.
It is worth the wait because they do quality work, and we know the company.
Hope this helps.
