Charlie Louvin July 7, 1927 – January 26, 2011

Charlie Louvin, half of the Louvin Brothers duo whose harmonies inspired fellow country and pop singers for decades, died early Wednesday due to complications from pancreatic cancer. He was 83.

The Louvin Brothers harmonies always inspired me, particularly this song:

Here’s Emmylou singing one of the Louvin Brothers songs:

I saw her in about 1976 as she was touring for Elite Hotel. Still my favorite album of hers.

One of These Days (tasty harmonies by Jonathan Edwards)

    Satan’s Jewel Crown

And of course the two albums she did with Gram Parsons are classics.

One of the rare songs written by Emmylou. I’ve never understood why she didn’t write more. This one is beautiful.

Wow, #4 is beautiful. Don’t think I’ve heard that one before.

It’s off her very first album, Pieces of the Sky.

Hamous, I’ve always loved Boulder to Birmingham. I too wished she would write more songs.

I saw Emmylou a couple of times back in the 70s when she would come to Houston. It was during the period when she was backed up by a rock band and, frankly, it did not work well for her at all. Her voice is too delicate and she was just swamped with noise. Thankfully, she went back to being unplugged.

The Louvin Brothers were a national treasure.
