You people need some culture. Let’s all take a diversion into the arts.

Would you be referencing attendees of Texas Tech? That’s the only place I know where culture intersects with agriculture. As to the arts, I know good when I see it or hear it or taste it or feel it – but not necessarily when someone else tells me about it.

Numerous posts around the net have been disingenously characterizing recent Ethics Complaints filed agaist Speaker Joe Straus. To hear them talk, the sole purpose of the organization is to wildly accuse thier political opponents willy nilly to an extent that they should be labeled as “nutcases”. Some have even intimated that the organization itslef isllegal or acting illegally.
The truth of the matter is something different.
While a representative of the organization, Texas Ethics Advisory Board, readily admits that these recent filing were “Absolutley.” meant to affect the outcome of the Speakers race,
Elmer, of Conroe, who also operates the Texas Ethics Advisory Board political committee, said he was goaded to file the complaint (as an individual citizen) because of Straus’ positions on abortion, gambling and other issues — as well as his record of drawing substantial campaign contributions from outside his San Antonio district.
Elmer said he, Jim Doyle, Tom Curry and Al Schlieske had each filed an ethics complaint against Straus, with the first critical letter being sent out Dec. 16. So far, two of the four complaints have been accepted by the TEC, which must investigate all validly submitted citizen complaints.
this isn’t the first time the organization has lodged complaints against politicians, and they have a track record of success. (You may also note that, although characterized as being a “last minute” filing of complaints, the first ones were lodged almost a month ago.) Why Straus supporters want you to think that they haven’t known about this all that time, I will leave up to your own conjecture.
Along with PAC treasurer Jim Jennings and other activists also based in Southeast Texas, Elmer’s coalition routinely files campaign finance complaints with the Texas Ethics Commission (TEC) against candidates up and down the ballot.
“I dare say, if you look at the TEC website, 40 percent of those rulings resulted from our complaints,” Elmer said.
For example, Elmer and co. have been credited by media for filing complaints against Tomball city council members (also here), Galveston city council members, Austin city council members, a Montgomery County Commissioner, state Rep. Joe Heflin (D-Crosbyton), Conroe ISD board members, State Board of Education member Mary Helen Berlanga (D-Corpus Christi), Planned Parenthood of North Texas PAC and Planned Parenthood of Houston. Many have resulted in fines, usually in the $100s or $1,000s.
Elmer also gives his group — which he says would like to be known as a “watchdog organization” — credit for a $10,600 fine levied against state Rep. Rob Eissler (R-The Woodlands) in 2008, saying it’s the largest fine their complaints have rendered thus far. (.pdf of complaint via Texas Tribune)
(links in the post)
This is yet another example of Establishment Republicans accepting the help of a Conservative Watchdog group when it benefits them politically, then demonizing them as “nutcases” when their power is threatened.
And THAT is the real threat to advancing the Conservative Agenda in Texas.

Guess you’ve all heard about the 2 US House members, including Pete Sessions of Dallas, who were off site for Wednesday’s swearing-in ceremony. They said they thought they got sworn-in because they raised their right hands while watching the ceremony on TV.
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0111/47230.html
It is also being reported that they were engaged in fundraising in the Capitol Visitors Center, said to be an ethics violation.

Good morning all. A bright and beautiful start to Saturday, 41 at 6 making it a step-lively trip to the barn to feed the mares, and a clear ebony sky with many points of light looked down on all. By mid-morning the parade of bird flocks continues, the latest being grackles feasting on seeds from the dried grasses and oats that traveled through the mares. Our pastures are a really big bird feeder. The north wind picks up.
At least four groups of birds visit daily in a rotation schedule known only to them. The exception is a stormy and cold-front-roaring-in day when they wisely stay in shelter and ride it out. Wily crows like acorns and pecans especially and know how to crack them by dropping them from a height to the concrete or a rooftop. They also scarf up ones that have been run over on the driveway but have to battle the squirrels for them. Who can resist an easy banquet? Our resident hawks have been busy swooping to ground in the pastures for some delicacy, and yesterday it looked like a pair might be courting.
Outdoor Christmas decorations are put away, and the place looks forlorn. Several poinsettias on the patio and in the kitchen are still looking good. The tree comes down tomorrow when the weather is to be too nasty to be outside. The remaining decorations are winter themed and can stay until Valentine’s Day. It is easy to recall how depressing January-March is in the frozen north, when winter seems to never end and the cheer of Christmas is long gone.

Well an old friend is turning 100, on March 29, 1911 the US Army adopted the best auto ever made and now the old war horse is more popular than ever. Humm, there IS a gun show in Pasadena this weekend, maybe I’ll just go get one to celebrate. 😉

Hey Gang:Aren’t god loving, bible reading christians supposed to be about peace, love and spreading the Gospel of the Big JC – ‘love thy neighbor’ and “thou Shalt not lie” and all those good things from the Top Ten that good ol’ Moses brought down from the mountain for us to live by?
Seems like the Donna Garners of this world are trying to see how many of those commandments they can break.
Just doesn’t make any sense – that’s why it must be airplane glue (or lead paint). How else do you explain Donna Garner’s behavior.
But here’s the REAL question of the night:

Ah, yes – I can trust Dear Leader:
Schmidt stressed today that anonymity and pseudonymity will remain possible on the Internet. “I don’t have to get a credential if I don’t want to,” he said. There’s no chance that “a centralized database will emerge,” and “we need the private sector to lead the implementation of this,” he said.

I stopped off at a couple of yard sales (one an “estate” sale, the other a plain ol’ yard sale) and snagged a few items cheap. I have a sister that collects milk glass and hippos. The last few years I’ve given her some cute hippo ornaments (good looking hippos are hard to find – go easy on the fat jokes, guys). I picked up this item for $5.00, feeling good about it. Also purchased this item for $8.00, feeling good about it, too. Her milk glass collection is really pretty when it’s all together in her china cabinet.TT;
Is that your store?
If so, how is that working out for you?
I’m interesting in putting some stuff up for sale.

Oh yes. And totally in keeping with the sentiment that what is really needed is reasoned, sane, and respectful debate so as to appeal to the VMG. You know those Nutcase Hypocritical Christian Whackos on the far right are what’s pushing the VMG away. They just can’t discuss anything without being rude and crude—they embarass the Republican party and give the media ammunition. They get so combative and agressive, it scares the VMG away from the much more reasonable and respectable Establishment Republicans.

World War I
Germany, Austria and Italy are standing together in the middle of a pub when Serbia bumps into Austria and spills Austria’s pint. Austria demands Serbia buy it a complete new suit because there are splashes on its trouser leg. Germany expresses its support for Austria’s point of view. Britain recommends that everyone calm down a bit. Serbia points out that it can’t afford a whole suit, but offers to pay for the cleaning of Austria’s trousers.
Russia and Serbia look at Austria. Austria asks Serbia who it’s looking at. Russia suggests that Austria should leave its little brother alone.Austria inquires as to whose army will assist Russia in compelling it to do so. Germany appeals to Britain that France has been looking at it, and that this is sufficiently out of order that Britain should not intervene. Britain replies that France can look at who it wants to, that Britain is looking at Germany too, and what is Germany going to do about it? Germany tells Russia to stop looking at Austria, or Germany will render Russia incapable of such action. Britain and France ask Germany whether it’s looking at Belgium.
Turkey and Germany go off into a corner and whisper. When they come back, Turkey makes a show of not looking at anyone. Germany rolls up its sleeves, looks at France, and punches Belgium. France and Britain punch Germany. Austria punches Russia. Germany punches Britain and France with one hand and Russia with the other.Russia throws a punch at Germany, but misses and nearly falls over. Japan calls over from the other side of the room that it’s on Britain’s side, but stays there. Italy surprises everyone by punching Austria. Australia punches Turkey, and gets punched back. There are no hard feelings because Britain made Australia do it.
France gets thrown through a plate glass window, but gets back up and carries on fighting. Russia gets thrown through another one, gets knocked out, suffers brain damage, and wakes up with a complete personality change. Italy throws a punch at Austria and misses, but Austria falls over anyway. Italy raises both fists in the air and runs round the room chanting. America waits till Germany is about to fall over from sustained punching from Britain and France, then walks over and smashes it with a barstool, then pretends it won the fight all by itself.
By now all the chairs are broken and the big mirror over the bar is shattered. Britain, France and America agree that Germany threw the first punch, so the whole thing is Germany’s fault. While Germany is still unconscious, they go through its pockets, steal its wallet, and buy drinks for all their friends.
World War II
So later that night Germany is bitching about how America and Britain robbed it and blames it on the screwdriver it had been drinking. It decides to finish off its juice, and go take back a table he had been looking at since the beginning of the night. GB, France and America were pretty bloodied up and didn’t want to get into it again, so when Germany starts shoving people out of the way, they won’t start fighting with him. On the other side of the room, Japan is stealing people’s drinks.
Germany and Russia get to the good table, and proceed to kick Poland in the face and steal the tables from Poland’s group. France and Britain lose it. They try to surround Germany, but now Germany has 2 bar stools and is holding off France with one and clubbing Belgium with the other. Russia gathers all of Poland’s drinks and claims they belong to his group now.
Everyone kind of stands around for a bit, then Germany throws the chair at France, knocking him out cold. Germany then suckerpunches Britain in the gut, but Britain jumps behind the bar and starts throwing bottles. Germany throws bottles back, but neither can hit the other.
America is sitting in the corner, claiming that none of this is its problem. Japan then runs over, steals its drink, and slaps America in the face. America loses its mind and starts breaking chairs and fashioning spears out of the pieces.
Germany tries to jump over the bar to get at England, which now has control of the drink dispenser, and keeps spraying tonic water in Germany’s eyes when it comes close. Meanwhile, all of Britain’s friends get between Germany and the beer fridge.
Italy decides that if anyone is going to get past Britain to get more bottles, it will be him, so Italy jumps up on the bar, slips and lands on it’s head and is knocked unconscious. America and Britain take this opportunity to kick Italy in the ribs for the next 5 minutes.
Germany decides if it is ever going to get more bottles to throw at Britain, it will have to try another tactic. So it picks up a keg and smashes it over Russia’s head and makes a run for the fridge in the chaos. Germany almost gets there, but Russia grabs Germany’s ankle, trips it, and proceeds to headbutt Germany half to death losing most of its teeth in the process.
America is now chasing Japan across the room trying to get its drinks back. Every time it passes Germany, Germany gets a swift kick to the nuts. Finally Japan gets tired and runs back to its corner, so America, Britain and France, who has just recently woken up, but is still wandering around in a daze, grab Germany from Russia and start slamming its head into the floor. Italy wakes up, decides it wants to help, but just stands there looking dumb while Britain, France and America beat Germany to a pulp.
Once Germany is unconscious, America finishes its chairleg spear, and with Russia, rushes Japan. Japan has thrown down tables around itself as a barrier and is waiting with a stool. America throws it’s barspear and it hits Japan in the eye. Japan holds its face and yells to stop.

“Upon completion of the production of The Kennedys, History has decided not to air the 8-part miniseries on the network,” a rep for the network tells The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. “While the film is produced and acted with the highest quality, after viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand.”

History and parent A&E said at the time that the script had been revised and that the final version had been vetted by experts. Indeed, the script used in production had passed muster with History historians for accuracy.
Word is that, in keeping with its high standards of historical accuracy, the time slots previously set aside for The Kennedys will be used to rebroadcast prvious episodes of Ice Road Truckers and Pawn Stars.

A House Democrat who narrowly won re-election in November has introduced a bill to cut the pay of Congress by 5%.
On the same day the House passed a measure cutting congressional office budgets by 5%, Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords filed a bill seeking to cut members’ pay by the same percentage. That would amount to $8,700 for rank-and-file lawmakers. Top leaders in both parties make more, with House Speaker John Boehner earning $223,500 a year.

BISBEE — President Bush recently signed into law a provision offered by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords to ensure the federal government can prosecute smugglers who tunnel under the Arizona-Mexico border.Under the new law, people who knowingly construct or finance the construction of a tunnel crossing the international border between the United States and another country shall be fined and imprisoned for up to 20 years.
There are additional criminal penalties for using a tunnel to smuggle illegal immigrants, goods, controlled substances, weapons of mass destruction or terrorists. “The congresswoman is very pleased that this is now the law of the land and she hopes this will go a long way towards strengthening border security,”

Frankly you’re not the epitomy of civil discourse. For the most part you’re logical but not civil.
The difference, of course, is that I have neither ever pretended that I was, or excoriated or demeaned any person or group, or blamed them for any wrong doing associated with their beleifs, for not being so. Niether have I ever claimed that my point of view was superior to any one else’s method of discourse. CNN is already hinting it’s the Tea Party’s fault.
All sorts of people are accusing the Tea party of all sorts of perfidy these days. Its quite the rage from what I understand.
She also voted against Pelosi as Minority Leader.
And, there is another, more believable conjecture than “The Tea Party Did It”
Southern Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is trying to hit drug cartels where it hurts them the most, in their wallets. She wants to target a source of money that lets crooks spend without getting caught.
Arizona attorney general Terry Goddard waves a type of cash card and says, “This is one of the ways cartels are making millions, if not billions of dollars illegally. Let’s stop it.”

Giffords has introduced legislation to put rules on the cards to make it more difficult for criminals to use them to move money.

What, exactly, is the difference between CNN and other Liberals saying that the Tea Party is responsible for a murder because they have churned up the waters of political discontent, and Establishment Republicans call them Liars and Nutcases?
And which groups accusation is more damaging to advancing a Conservative Agenda in this country?

I’m noting that there are two groups who are accusing the Tea Party of creating an atmosphere of hate. The difference between the two is only a matter of the degree to which they will go to make thier accusations.

If you compare the nature of the comments and posts that will, or already have, accused the Tea Party or Conservatives to be responsible for this act (as well as others in the past), with the kind that are currently being posted in the course of the debate within the Republican Party (and not just as regards the Speakers Race), you can see a good deal of similarity. Same accusations (except as to degree), same allegations of “Christian hypocrisy”, even the same verbiage: “Nutcases”, “Liars” and the like.
There’s not really that much difference, even when it comes to motive: maintenance of power and reluctance to hand it over or share it with those who actually won the election.

Well if you’re thinking of going to the Gun show in Pasadena, don’t bother, what a water haul, not much selction,….I.E. no big dealers were there, not one. At most shows there’s 3 or 4 big dealers = low prices I did get me a Texas Ranger holster,…for my cell phone. 😉 Also I heard a M99 Savage calling my name, it had a hand checkered walnut stock in almost new condition, chambered for 243,….BUTT it was anewer model without the rotary magazine and round counter. It had a clip. 🙁

A couple of dudes break into the office of a trailer park (that’s two strikes right there – against each) and attempt to rob the manager when she comes in for work. One had a knife, one had a gun.
The manager had a cannon. (strike three)
She was grazed by a shot from the robbers, but
“He shot. And I shot him. Wherever he’s at he’s wounded, somewhere,” McCullock said.
McCullock carries ‘the Judge’ in a holster. It’s a pistol that shoots a shotgun shell as well as .45 caliber bullet. McCullock said the robber’s bullet just grazed her right arm. She fired back a shotgun blast at point blank range.
Are you sure you hit him? “Yes, I’m positive. I’m positive. I’m a good shooter. Definitely a good shooter. My husband taught me well.”
Bravo, Mrs. McCullock. Well done.

About the shooting, when I first heard about it I didn’t know if she was a D or R but my FIRST thought was Drug Gang related since she was from Tucson. Apparently, Giffords is alive and in critical/grave condition.
Also, the gunman is apparently a loser named Jared Laughner. An alleged accomplice was also arrested in a nearby town, while a third person is being sought in connection with the shooting.
A Federal Judge was killed and several others are in local hospitals with varying severity of injury.
Looks to me like it’s a few of those way far out there whackos.
My prayers go out to all those involved.

Giffords was among at least 10 people wounded, and the hospital said her outlook was “optimistic” and that she was responding to commands from doctors. The hospital said a 9-year-old child was among the killed, and a U.S. Marshal said a federal judge was also fatally shot in the attack.
Good grief!

2. I will never rant about another blog
3. Come into a nice peaceful discussion and go on for 5+ oversized paragraphs ranting about something no one has given the slightest inclination of interest inDo we have a deal?
Although on occasion I may become fixated on the opinion of someone in the forum and give them holy hell for as long as they can stand it.

You have been known to be a little crusty at times, but there’s nothing wrong with that. 😉

I’ve never thought that Pasadena show was much to write home about.
The sad thing is what has happened to the Astrohall show.
No argument from me about that, but 2 out of 3 of shows there always had 2-4 big dealers with a large selection and low prices, so if you found yourself needing to purchase a gun ASAP, they came in real handy. I remember driving all the way to Conroe in December 2008 to purchase a 9 MM for future Son-in-Law’s Graduation from Sam Houston. I got caught with my pants down. 😉
P.S. he later told me that his Sig Sauer P229 was the best gift that he received. -

New York Times’ columnist Paul Krugman took to his blog site Saturday to blame Republicans and conservatives for the attempted murder of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Despite the somber occasion, Krugman chose to be combative and shamelessly used Saturday’s tragedy to berate those ideologically opposed to him.
Before any evidence came to light about who the shooter and what his motivations might be, Krugman assumed the act was politically motivated by disgruntled Republicans:
We don’t have proof yet that this was political, but the odds are that it was. She’s been the target of violence before. And for those wondering why a Blue Dog Democrat, the kind Republicans might be able to work with, might be a target, the answer is that she’s a Democrat who survived what was otherwise a GOP sweep in Arizona, precisely because the Republicans nominated a Tea Party activist. (Her father says that “the whole Tea Party” was her enemy.) And yes, she was on Sarah Palin’s infamous “crosshairs” list.
Good flippin’ grief! The outright liability, both direct and implied, is huge here.

Report: Giffords‘ Gunman ’Left Wing, Quite Liberal’
According to Business Insider, a woman claiming to have been a classmate of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords‘ alleged shooter Jared Loughner says he has run into the Congresswoman once before and that he’s “left wing” and “quite liberal.” That comes as some on the left are trying to paint Loughner as one who succumbed to angry, Tea Party rhetoric.
Read the posted tweets.
But when news of the shooting broke, some conservatives, especially Tea Party officials, expressed concern that the left might try to label that gunman as a radical right-winger.
While Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips condemned the attack on Giffords, he told The Hill was concerned the Tea Party movement would be blamed for the incident.
No, liberals are tolerant. Seidl needs to provide proof to back uop these right wing worries. Oh, wait, he did. Read the tweets from Marcos Moulistsas, “founder of Daily KOS”.
Mission accomplished, Sarah Palin,
I may have to move off this topic. I’m getting deeply angry.

This landed in my in box – thought it was interesting.
The Ghost of Thanksgiving Yet to Come“Winston, come into the dining room, it’s time to eat,” Julia yelled to her husband. “In a minute, honey, it’s a tie score,” he answered. Actually Winston wasn’t very interested in the traditional holiday football game between Detroit and Washington . Ever since the government passed the Civility in Sports Statute of 2017, outlawing tackle football for its “unseemly violence” and the “bad example it sets for the rest of the world,” Winston was far less of a football fan than he used to be. Two-hand touch wasn’t nearly as exciting.
Yet it wasn’t the game that Winston was uninterested in. It was more the thought of eating another Tofu Turkey. Even though it was the best type of Veggie Meat available after the government revised the American Anti-Obesity Act of 2018, adding fowl to the list of federally-forbidden foods, (which already included potatoes, cranberry sauce and mince-meat pie), it wasn’t anything like real turkey. And ever since the government officially changed the name of “Thanksgiving Day” to “A National Day of Atonement” in 2020 to officially acknowledge the Pilgrims’ historically brutal treatment of Native Americans, the holiday had lost a lot of its luster.
Eating in the dining room was also a bit daunting. The unearthly gleam of government-mandated fluorescent light bulbs made the Tofu Turkey look even weirder than it actually was, and the room was always cold. Ever since Congress passed the Power Conservation Act of 2016, mandating all thermostats-which were monitored and controlled by the electric company-be kept at 68 degrees, every room on the north side of the house was barely tolerable throughout the entire winter.
Still, it was good getting together with family. Or at least most of the family. Winston missed his mother, who passed on in October, when she had used up her legal allotment of live-saving medical treatment. He had had many heated conversations with the Regional Health Consortium, spawned when the private insurance market finally went bankrupt, and everyone was forced into the government health care program. And though he demanded she be kept on her treatment, it was a futile effort. “The RHC’s resources are limited,” explained the government bureaucrat Winston spoke with on the phone. “Your mother received all the benefits to which she was entitled. I’m sorry for your loss.”
Ed couldn’t make it either. He had forgotten to plug in his electric car last night, the only kind available after the Anti-Fossil Fuel Bill of 2021 outlawed the use of the combustion engines-for everyone but government officials. The fifty mile round trip was about ten miles too far, and Ed didn’t want to spend a frosty night on the road somewhere between here and there.
Thankfully, Winston’s brother, John, and his wife were flying in. Winston made sure that the dining room chairs had extra cushions for the occasion. No one complained more than John about the pain of sitting down so soon after the government-mandated cavity searches at airports, which severely aggravated his hemorrhoids. Ever since a terrorist successfully smuggled a cavity bomb onto a jetliner, the TSA told Americans the added “inconvenience” was an “absolute necessity” in order to stay “one step ahead of the terrorists.” Winston’s own body had grown accustomed to such probing ever since the government expanded their scope to just about anywhere a crowd gathered, via Anti-Profiling Act of 2022. That law made it a crime to single out any group or individual for “unequal scrutiny,” even when probable cause was involved. Thus, cavity searches at malls, train stations, bus depots, etc., etc., had become almost routine. Almost.
The Supreme Court is reviewing the statute, but most Americans expect a Court composed of six progressives and three conservatives to leave the law intact. “A living Constitution is extremely flexible,” said the Court’s eldest member, Elena Kagan. ” Europe has had laws like this one for years. We should learn from their example,” she added.
Winston’s thoughts turned to his own children. He got along fairly well with his 12-year-old daughter, Brittany, mostly because she ignored him. Winston had long ago surrendered to the idea that she could text anyone at any time, even during Atonement Dinner. Their only real confrontation had occurred when he limited her to 50,000 texts a month, explaining that was all he could afford. She whined for a week, but got over it.
His 16-year-old son, Jason, was another matter altogether. Perhaps it was the constant bombarding he got in public school that global warming, the bird flu, terrorism or any of a number of other calamities were “just around the corner,” but Jason had developed a kind of nihilistic attitude that ranged between simmering surliness and outright hostility. It didn’t help that Jason had reported his father to the police for smoking a cigarette in the house, an act made criminal by the Smoking Control Statute of 2018, which outlawed smoking anywhere within 500 feet of another human being. Winston paid the $5000 fine, which might have been considered excessive before the American dollar became virtually worthless as a result of QE13. The latest round of quantitative easing the federal government initiated was, once again, to “spur economic growth.” This time they promised to push unemployment below its years-long rate of 18%, but Winston was not particularly hopeful.
Yet the family had a lot for which to be thankful, Winston thought, before remembering it was a Day of Atonement. At least he had his memories. He felt a twinge of sadness when he realized his children would never know what life was like in the Good Old Days, long before government promises to make life “fair for everyone” realized their full potential. Winston, like so many of his fellow Americans, never realized how much things could change when they didn’t happen all at once, but little by little, so people could get used to them.
He wondered what might have happened if the public had stood up while there was still time, maybe back around 2010, when all the real nonsense began. “Maybe we wouldn’t be where we are today if we’d just said ‘enough is enough’ when we had the chance,” he thought.
Maybe so, Winston. Maybe so.

Boy, I just got back on and it’s been a busy afternoon for everybody! My prayers to the victims, family, and friends of the shooting. I heard about it on the radio this afternoon, and the skinny then was that the shooter was an Afghan vet. Don’t know if it’s true, but the upshot was that gun owners and the public in general better hold onto their firearms, because more gun control legislation is coming. That makes sense. It seems that legislators seem to think more laws solve things, instead of letting enforcement do its job.
As for me, I went and bought my yard cart. It’s about half the size of my older wheelbarrow. I brought it home, grabbed some tools, and went into our old house and cannibalized some closet shelving and some other stuff, loading it into the cart. I tried to removed the antique doorknobs. I got one of them, but the others are going to require some inventive thinking to remove. I unloaded the stuff and then went out and covered my garden in preparation for the bad weather coming. I checked my floodlight for the garden (to keep the plants from freezing), then I began digging on the small mountain of dirt in the backyard. I moved about five cartloads of dirt and some that was strictly shovel transported. While digging, I found some grubs for my sister’s chickens, so I went ahead and loaded a cartload of bricks for her. I delivered bricks and the chickens made short work of the grubs. That made them and my sister happy, which gives me the warm fuzzies. I sat and talked to sis and bro-in-law for a while. They’re making a frame over their garden, too, but since it’s a lot bigger they are using rebar instead of PVC piping. We discussed several family things and then I came home. I unloaded the cart and made sure my tools were put up. After getting a drink of water, I went outside to pick up pecans while there was still light. While I was out there, I noticed that the leaves were piled up against the storm drain in the ditch. I trekked back the back yard, got the cart, a pitchfork, and a rake, and headed out to the ditch. The cart was small enough that I could get it down into my work area, and since it has four wheels instead of a wheelbarrow’s three, it was stable and didn’t fall over. I pitched the pile of leaves into the cart, filling it to the brim and then some, and hauled it to my compost pile, which promptly doubled in size. I put all my tools away again, and fended off the cat long enough to get a shower.
I am tired, sore, and am warily watching the signs of a pending headache, but it’s been a good afternoon. I got a lot done before the bad weather comes. And I have thoroughly broken in my little cart.
Now, I just have to wash dishes, cook dinner, wash dishes again, and do some bookkeeping…
It never ends, does it?

Speaking of cats, Cinnamon is my little 3-year-old cat that was being treated for respiratory problems the entire month of December. She had quit eating and drinking. Tuesday morning last week, she had exploratory surgery done in her nasal passages and a 3-cm long mass was found up in there. It was necrotic on one end and appeared to be a polyp that had broken off. After that it was just lodged up in her nasal/pharyngeal area, causing irritation and infection. We got her back home that night about 6 pm and when the carrier door was opened, she trotted straight to the kitchen and started scarfing a few crunchies that were left in the other cats’ bowls from their supper. That was an amazing sweet sight.
The polyp was sent off for biopsy and unfortunately it tested positive as cancerous. She is eating on her own and moving around wherever she wants to go when not snoozed out. We have already been advised that it is impossible to tell by inspection in a small animal’s nose whether all the affected tissue was removed. Also the back of her nasal passages is less than an inch away from her brain, so radiation treatment will not be recommended.
We will keep her going as long as she is willing and able. Optimistically, it could be years; we’ll see.

Regarding Paul Krugman “acting stupidly” in his wild assertions about the mass shootings in AZ, one commenter on the linked article in #106 declared Krugman was “off his meds again.” That’s probably correct and the most genteel assertion anyone can come up with. Wonder what the Nobel Committee will think about him once they get wind of his rantings. Have they ever asked for their prize back or at least placed an * beside the name to indicate special circumstances/something fishy? Of course Al Gore is ahead of Krugman for such treatment.
Hope somebody sues him into oblivion.

Thinking about recent chat with TT re collecting milk glass, hippos, depression glass… I also collect penguins, certain kinds of ceramic owls, owl trivets, Wizard of Oz dolls, Nightmare Before Christmas items, Dr Who action figures, exotic water pistols, and a bunch of other stuff. I have friends who collect carousels, Noah’s Ark, swans, and elephants.
It occurs to me that the way the world may end is when every available molecule is turned into a collectible of some type, and then there’s no room left to grow food.

Good morning all. Windy and rainy 50 and diving at 6; that’s the high for the day. Now it’s 42, rain has mostly stopped out here north of Richmond, and the wind is variable but has teeth. Two squirrels venture forth in the front yard, zooming down one tree, dashing toward another, stopping to drink from a puddle on the way, then up into a live oak that offers some protection.
Big puddle in the back yard, much smaller ones in front. Digital rain gauge is not working so we have to trudge out to the plastic one on the fence. All that’s left to pass by us is some light rain/drizzle. Clouds to the NW are thinning slightly. We have lucked out that the temp didn’tn’t fall fast enough to spawn sleet or freezing rain. It’s merely miserable.
Mharper42, best wishes for little Cinnamon’s long life with you despite her diagnosis. Hope they got all the cancerous tissue. She is certainly happy to be home. Please update us on her progress.

Sweetie went out for girls night last night so me and the son go to Buffalo Wild Wings for guys night to take in the football game.
He “checks in” on Facebook on his iphone and immediately up pops anyone he knows, might know or might wanna know that are in Wild Wings and the other establishments nearby. He was suprised to see that so I’m asuming it is new. That’s spooky scary to me, I think I’ll stick to the laptop at home. And no FB. -

Heh. That reminds me of a Christmas with my grandmother a few years ago. She had reached about 90 and it had become harder and harder for the grandkids to buy her gifts (what do you get a 90 year old woman that doesn’t need anything?) After Christmas dinner she gathered everyone together and, as gently as possible, told us to please not buy her any more knick-knacks!

Ya think the libs are in a froth to take over the cable, net, and social media through their minions in the FCC because they know very well how fast these are growing and strangling the MSM as news outlets for liberal mouthpieces? Krugman surely knows it, maybe that’s why he keeps reflex ranting at warp speed.

Interesting, Texpat. Google “thermal depolymerization” and you will find that it is being done on a much larger scale here in America. The technology has existed for several years now. It is a question of efficiency.

I think his goals are much smaller and focus on garbage recycling in third world countries where it could possibly be burned in small quantites as kerosene, etc. The larger ooperations are fine and can provide another, albeit relatively small, source of oil, but there will never be enough recyclable plastic retrieved in the world to make any real dent in petroleum demand. But every little bit helps, I suppose.

The feedstock for TDP is not limited to plastics which allows for more capacity, but in the big picture the amount of oil produced is relatively small. Probably the biggest benefit is the reduction of the amount of stuff that goes into our landfills.

#150 Texpat, “nails it” is an accurate description. As a very liberal friend of mine (he ran a blog called The Peoples Republic of Seabrook) used to say, “I love it when republicans eat their young.”
The liberals love it when, in the wake of an electoral victory of historical proportion, a small but noisy faction of the right declares war on their own party.

#153 You’re quite correct that the left infights too (e.g. the bitter Obama/Clinton primary.) I’m not so sure about how much of a role the MSM plays in covering it up. That sounds contradictory and conspiratorial to me.
The pattern I observe is that infighting is more prevalent when a party has a majority. It boils down to people under the same tent arguing with each other about how to use the power.

I don’t argue that the MSM leans way left, but it is far from monolithic or under the control of a single (evil) entity.
btw. Calling them “stooges” does your argument no good. It makes you sound like a conspiracy theorist.

On a lighter note, my Baby Girl turned 26,….26!!! last week, Dang Dammit I’m getting old! I wanted to have the whole family go out to eat for Her birthday, BUTT it seems that She’s been working 10 hour days plus most of last Saturday because they just bought a new store and She has lot on Her plate. I called the Boy to see what he was doing today and He’s having a birthday party/new baby party for his Buddy that lives across the street from him. I’ve been SNUBBED by both my Kids! And that is a GOOD thing! They both have lives of their own. YES! Life is good. 😀
WelI I regrouped and I am making Chicken Parmesan with garlic bread for supper. -

While the major media outlets are busy blaming “right-wing extremist rhetoric” for inciting the loon in Arizona yesterday and the lefty sites are busy deleting anti-Giffords posts, we find that a former classmate of the evil loon says he was a “left-wing pothead”.
I think I agree with this astute observation from a blog I read from time to time:
You know, maybe the shooter is a “left-leaning libertine atheist nutjob.”
The former classmate confirms the first two (“left-wing pothead”); he said that he told his Army recruiter he had no religious belief; and his being a nutjob is intuitively obvious to the most naive casual observer.

#150 Re: The BurkaBlog
The outside groups that agitated against Straus must have known that they were taking on a hopeless task in trying to defeat him. Straus had an ample number of pledges to win. What the groups couldn’t stand was that he wasn’t one of them–he wasn’t an extreme partisan, he wasn’t a movement conservative, he wasn’t going to exclude Democrats from chairmanships; in short, he wasn’t going to jettison the traditions of the House, which meant that he wasn’t going to do their bidding.

I wondered why he didn’t use that all the time as president. I have held and still hold today the position that when George W. Bush spoke and acted as George W. Bush, I either liked him or loved him. When he acted on political calculations, I detested him.

There are times where it’s hard NOT to allow at least a little bit of police brutality.
Westboro Baptists Vow to Picket Funerals of AZ Shooting Victims
“God sent the shooter,” Westboro Baptist Church‘s Fred Phelps remarked in a new video posted online after Saturday’s tragic shooting played out in Tucscon, Ariz.

#164 M42, I like that we can agree on some things. Not that I’m counting, but I think that makes two.
#178 Darren, yup, it is hard. As much as I dislike those idiot inbred nutjobs, I can’t support violence against them, especially on the part of the authoritahs.
Outnumber them with opposition protests? Yup. Make fun of them? (My specialty.) Yup. Ignore them? Yup. Shun them? Yup.
I really feel sorry for the kids that grow up in that hateful, ignorant environment.

Let’s see, at a time when MSN is promoting the idea that Sarah Palin, you know, that right wing (stupid) Christian woman, was responsible for arousing Loughner to shoot Rep. Giffords and bob42 takes, get ready, MSM’s side in today’s suggestion that they are the Left’s “stooges” and even claims it was the conservative blogger that sounds conspiratorial for calling them as much.
Unbelievable.

I’ve also seen where they take the waste from meat processing (esp. poultry) and convert to a hydrocarbon – diesel fuel or kerosene, IIRC.
You do indeed recall correctly, at least about the poultry part (the end product of TDP is pretty much light, sweet crude rather than kerosene or diesel). The pilot TDP plant was in very close proximity to a facility that processed turkey. The TDP plant got a handy feedstock and the turkey plant got to have the turkey waste / excess parts hauled off for free. It was a nice little symbiotic arrangement. I’m not sure why we haven’t heard more about it. I suppose input costs still far outweigh output capacity at this point, but I could see it becoming financially feasible years on down the road as the technology improves, especially given that the TDP plants could be located close to sources of (what would be) trash.

This TDP talk sparked my interest again: I haven’t looked into the subject in a few years. I found this source of information on TDP and how they ultimately oversold / underdelivered:

There ain’t no free lunches and there ain’t no perpetual motion machines. Fun stuff to think about though.

Crap. It looks like I may have to buy a new adaptor and/or battery for Baby Dell. It works on AC power, but if my loose cord falls out or jiggles out of place (it’s been loose for a while), my computer just shuts down. I hate not having a battery; I have no grace period in which to reconnect. I just found a thread where lots of people are complaining about their batteries not charging as well. It seems Dell has a major issue with this — after the warranty runs out, like mine.

#184 Tedtam, I’d start with the battery. Depending on a lot of variables you can only expect an 18 to 24 month lifespan from them. More importantly, Windoze can only stand so many ungraceful shutdowns before it becomes a vegetable.

There were several other people who bought new batteries from an online source rather than going through expensive Dell. I shall try that first, as the “reset” procedure did not work, and it looks like the pin in my adapter is still in place.

Yeppers, and I hear the Daily Kos (which I pronounce cha-os, not “cause” or “kose”), was scrubbing its site from some pretty aggressive comments.
But nothing ever disappears completely on the internet.
