Friday New Year’s Eve Open Comments

Again, I find the couch is not made up for company. I am unlocking the door and inviting ya’ll in. I, unfortunately, have work to do, so please help yourself to the beverages and leftovers in the fridge, and talk amongst yourselves until I can join in your pleasant company. Make yourself at home!

PS: The plunger behind the toilet is there for a reason.

At the risk of sounding like El Gordo, I just want to say I’m glad the Connecticut women’s basketball team will be out of the news now. The only sport most men want to see adult women compete in involves either mud or Jello.

    G’Morning all
Dee & Reesa I went to see True Grit yesterday. It was good and kept the same premise as John Wayne’s but they changed it up so it would not be just another ripoff. There was more front end getting together and getting ready to go and the hunt was changed, but stayed within the boundaries of the story line. No, I’m not going to tell you the plot twists and turns, but it included public hangings, sleeping in a funeral home, bear hunters, old decaying corpses and rattlesnake bites. The characters were convincing, especially the 14 year old girl. The ONLY thing that grated on my nerves was that everyone spoke like a country preacher quoting the bible. It is worth seeing.

Good morning all. Mugly 65 at 6 and high overcast shrouding the Moon now and again, waves of gossamer clouds passing before her face and swirling by. Now all is overcast and getting darker, with two bands of rain south of Bryan/College Station ready to soon pass through ahead of the front. All is still at the moment.

We shall be at home tonight, trying to stay awake until midnight as usual on New Year’s Eve. A glass of wine or two and a movie is the customary entertainment, popcorn if desired. Terribly unsophisticated but oh so comfortable, especially on a cold and windy night.

Happy New Year to all Hamsters and lurkers. Bring on January 5th.

I love the Hammond B3 on this one

    In daylights, in sunsets
In midnights, in cups of coffee
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife
In five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure, a year in the life?

New Year’s eve plans are still indeterminate at this point, but there was talk of daughters pals bringing over the regulation sized beer pong table Santa brought them, which will look good nearby the pool table. I’ve suggested that the pickers among them bring their guitars as well. The Rhodes piano isn’t perfect yet, but it’s close enough for jazz.

So I reckon I’d better go down, do the kitchen, and vacuum the carpet since I’m likely to awake tomorrow morning to a living room littered with sleeping young folk.

    Happy New Year, Y’all.

All the comments about “True Grit” I’ve not had any desire to watch it because I can’t imagne anyone being able to come close to The Duke in portraying an ornery old goat that has a heart of gold. That said, I may rent it later as I don’t do movies, there’s just too many IDIOTS at the movies these days. The last move I went to see was Titanic (with Daughter) or The Patriot (with Daughter and the Boy) which ever came last, I don’t remember. Before these two I took both the kids to see Apollo 13.
FWIW; I have one of them movie 5 speaker sound systems plus a Bass speaker that rattles the foundation on my house, BUTT I have to admit that seeing the Patriot at the movie was something else, put my system to shame.

That was the way I felt before going to see it, but this really is the superior of the two movies. The biggest problem I had woth the original was the way that Glenn Campbell absoultely destroyed The Dukes best movie, and last LEGITIMATE chance to get a well deserved Oscar.

I do recomend going to see it in the theater. There is some great cinematography. It was filmed in locations that are near identical to the setting of the orignal story rather than the Colorado Rockies where the original was filmed. That adds to the movie rather than detracts from it.

On good thing is that the dialog is sufficiently similar to the original that somebody is bound to do a you tube edit of the damting taking out Jeff Bridges scenes and putting The Duke into it. Bridges did The Duke justice. He did not attempt an impersonation, and did not try to out do him. Your memories of John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn will be intact when you leave the theater, and you will have an increased appreciation for the abilities of Matt Damon.

#32 GJT, do you know of a Drive-In around Houston, they’re making a small comeback all over the country because of old dinosaur’s like me that have good memories about them. From sitting on the tailgate of the old 58 Plymouth station wagon eating fried chicken and home cooked popcorn to the later years when in winter we would park on the back row, stretch out our extension cord across the road to the small light fixtures, install a lamp/plug-in and plug in our electric blanket. 😉

I call it the Houston area, you prolly wouldn’t. The Showboat Drive-In, on 2920 in Hockley outside of Tomball. We love going there but the movie selections are mostly for families with young ‘uns, which is a good thing.

We did some work for them on an old manlift a few months back, the owner told me they tried to bring back the old Dollar Night, but Big Studio wouldn’t let them.

    RE: 5.1 Surround Sound

After my son bought me a subwoofer for Christmas, I’m pumped about my HT again. My AVR is capable of 7.1 but I never got around to putting in the backs. I thought I’d remembered running the wires for it when the house was being built. I rooted around the insulation yesterday and yes, by golly I did. I have speakers out on the back patio I never use, so I have the speakers already, just gonna cost me my labor which comes cheap!

One of the more disturbing aspects of your story about the mob attacking a Marine and his wife outside the Florida theater is how the MSM concealed the race of the offenders with phrases like

    a group of unruly teenagers

Here’s a different link that specifically points that out.

    http://cofcc.org/2010/12/media-censors-race-after-mob-of-black-teens-riot-and-attack-whites-outside-movie-theater/

Why do the media do this? Don’t they understand that a story in which identifying characteristics of the perps are CONSPICUOUSLY missing just convinces the reader that it must be some type of minority? Do they really think we’re so stupid that we don’t think Jihadis when there is a terrorism story, or blacks when there is a riot in Florida?

    The odds are overwhelming.

Finally had time to go back and finish up some HouChron editorials I had set aside in the last week. One was Froma Harrop’s column from Dec 23 on the latest US census.

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/editorial/outlook/7352735.html

This liberal Yankee isn’t likely to understand much about Texas, but I found this opinion a bit bizarre:

Until recently, Texas Republicans have been able to corral Latinos into bizarrely shaped districts.

Seems to me how racially gerrymandered districts work is just the opposite. That is, by fencing out whites, not by fencing in any group of minority voters, in order to ensure that a minority candidate can win an election.

I’d sure like to see in my lifetime political maps drawn up that are just rectangles containing X number of citizens…

I still have Polk audio speakers running in my bedroom. I bought them over 20 years ago and they still sound fine. Though Polk Audio would not be my first choice now, these were good speakers. Run your speakers as log as you can. no need to swap them unless you just want to.

    GJT;

Bottom line to me is if it works for you, use it. “Audiophile” is a fluid adjective as what sounds “good” to people varies. To me I like a warm speaker connected to a “bright” sounding amplifier.

Looking at your second link to your March Ones, if you set the frequency knobs to “0”, would that cancel out all frequency variables and allow the speakers to accept all frequencies and cross over the frequencies at a default setting? Have you played around with those settings? Nowadays most HT speakers will not let you decide crossover points.

Radio recollections: I was never on the air at Nova 104, but did do engineering work for them. The original licensee/owner was the renegade son of an oil millionaire and spared no expense on the studios or transmitter.

They had way cool stuff in the studio, but the boy screwed up in going with a start-up outfit instead of the market leader (Gates) for the transmitters. There were two of them (serial# 007/008) and were an experimental arrangement of redundancy. The idea was they’d both run at less than full power simultaneously, but if one had a problem the other would go full power, resulting in less downtime. Their outputs (on 4″ dia. coax) were fed to a “mixing network” bridge hung from the ceiling. The arrangement never worked very well, and most of the time we’d run on a single transmitter, at less than 100KW power.

The station’s original call letters were KGRA and it broadcast under the moniker of “Nova 104” during the mid 1970’s to 1981. Nova 104 played a format of AOR (Album Oriented Rock) music with laid back air personalities who each programmed the music for their individual shows from one of the largest vinyl album libraries in Louisiana. The format featured everything from AC/DC to Frank Zappa and included progressive country such as Jerry Jeff Walker and Rusty Wier. Nova 104 also featured a weekend Jazz show which added to their diversity and appeal.

I often wondered if the mgmt actually encouraged the DJs to do their shows stoned. If not, they certainly didn’t discourage it. Most of the time, the studios smelled like an Amsterdam coffee house.

The station was originally located physically on the 6th floor of The Pioneer Building in downtown Lake Charles which is now Lake Charles’ City Hall.

I wonder if the mayor still gets a residual contact buzz.

In the ’50s and ’60s racist white people had free reign to harass blacks and Hispanics without, or at least very little, restraint and without stigmatization by the media. SJL’s district was set up for black representation long before she occupied the seat. After the 1990 census Gene Green’s district was created to be a Hispanic seat (but a funny thing happened on the way to the election). Two of our four new congressional districts will probably be drawn as Hispanic seats. Basically they are all token seats. We’ll give you these if you shut up and don’t cause trouble. And the courts have forced this racial gerrymandering on us. It would be nice if we had a complete overhaul of the redistricting process to be as non-partisan as it possibly can be and for the courts to keep their fingers out of it. I think it would make for more competitive races and, contrary to conventional wisdom, I think it would make for more conservative representation. I also wish for world peace, a chicken in every pot, and the Texans to win the Superbowl. These are my wishes…and the wind just blows them away.

Give ’em one to play in while we get four 70%, give or take, Republican districts. Could be five or six 50/50 districts playing watered down conservative politics. My numbers may be off some, but that’s the thinking behind the lines.

Would you be OK with those simple rectanges for voting districts? Since black citizens are 12% of the population, give-or-take, but tend to live in clumps in urban areas — someone posted some demographic city maps recently showing just that — there could be some rectangles with minority majority w/o all the political convolutions.

In regards to naming things – I have a habit of naming all sorts of things around the house. As a matter of fact, I’ve christened Hubby with a few extra names, most of which cannot be said in mixed company. 🙂 He purchased a big honkin’ commercial floor cleaner (without consulting me) and wanted to name it the “Dust buster Max Extreme 3x” or some such nonsense. I said, “Nope, I’m calling it George.” And George it is to this day.

My sister painted a mural over the upstairs balcony, and in it is a woodpecker in a tree. Lovely and sister were discussing it when I came out of the office and walked by. “What should we name it?” I was asked. I looked at the woodpecker and said it looked like a Fred to me. They both looked at each other in amazement, as they both thought it was a Fred, too! So the bird is now named Fred. I named the squirrel Geraldine.

Hubby used to have a large white maxivan that he used for his business. On occasion I had to drive it. After driving it, I found the perfect name for it – Moby Dick. It was like driving a big, white whale.

We need to play the game the way they do, we get it all nice and nuetral and one well timed shift in power back to the Dems (easier done w/ neutral districts, btw) makes it that much easier to map us out for another decade.

Well this has been the veterinarian week, the Boy has a Bull Terrier that is about crazy, She eats everything! A chew toy last 3-30 minutes before She consumes it, She’s eaten a remote, a cell phone and a cell phone charger. They try to make sure She can’t get to anything but not always. Earlier in the week She developed a blockage in Her pipes, they took Her to the Vet and they had to operate on Her stomach and small intestines to remove pieces of plastic and copper wires. She’s home and doing fine now. Cost $1200, not bad I’d say, since a trip to the emergency clinic will be at least $1000 even if it’s just for a bottle of saline. My Bride has been in Alabama all week and took small Back-Up Dawg with Her, we’ve been putting off getting Her fixed for years but since Sister-in-Law works at the Vet’s office there we got R done, They fixed the Dawg, removed two benign cysts from Her belly and gave Her a Rabies shot for,….Drum roll,…$102.00!!!! This was with the 50% employee discount, but still DANG, not bad.
