Stress Therapy

Scan0007

Along with my crochet and embroidery, I have discovered that coloring with markers really helps bring my stress level down. When my eyes are too tired for embroidery, I pick up my book and open my large container of markers and go to town until the urge to slap somebody severely subsides.

BTW – Sharpie brand markers don’t leave “brush strokes,” unlike the cheaper school kid markers. Sometimes you want the strokes to show, other times not. I’m learning….

Now I get to send these to Sunshine. I like sending her stuff in the mail. When I was little, I remember how excited I was to receive anything in the mail, like the big folks.

PS: The colors didn’t scan in nearly as vividly as they are on paper. /sigh

    Restoring American Exceptionalism.
President Obama has dangerously surrendered the nationโ€™s global leadership, but it can be ours againโ€”if we choose his successor wisely. By Dick Cheney and
    Liz Cheney

In 1983, as the U.S. confronted the threat posed by the Soviet Union, President Ronald Reagan explained Americaโ€™s unique responsibility. โ€œIt is up to us in our time,โ€ he said, โ€œto choose, and choose wisely, between the hard but necessary task of preserving peace and freedom, and the temptation to ignore our duty and blindly hope for the best while the enemies of freedom grow stronger day by day.โ€ It was up to us thenโ€”as it is nowโ€”because we are the exceptional nation. America has guaranteed freedom, security and peace for a larger share of humanity than any other nation in all of history. There is no other like us. There never has been.

Born of the revolutionary ideal that we are โ€œendowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights,โ€ we were, first, an example to the world of freedomโ€™s possibilities. During World War II, we became freedomโ€™s defender, at the end of the Cold War, the worldโ€™s sole superpower. We did not seek the position. It is ours because of our ideals and our power, and the power of our ideals. As British historian Andrew Roberts has observed, โ€œIn the debate over whether America was born great, achieved greatness or had greatness thrust upon her, the only possible conclusion must be: all three.โ€

I know Erick Erickson “no longer enjoys any credibility” here, but I think it’s a bit premature to write him off as an “Establishment Republican” simply because he recognizes a charlatan:

The repeated betrayals of Republican leaders have led to the rise of Donald Trump. The petulance of the partyโ€™s congressional leaders who have spent more energy fighting conservative attempts to hold them to their word than fighting Barack Obama now have to fight to wrest control from Trump. Trump, at least presently, is immune from establishment attacks because the party leaders have lost all their credibility. A party that will not stand up to stop tax payer funds going to an organization that pulls whole children out of freezers to sell as scrap is not a party with the moral clarity to tell Donald Trump he is fired.

But there is more to this than meets the eye. More and more polling shows the biggest group of voters who hate the Republican Party are the Republicansโ€™ own conservative voters. In growing numbers they have driven down the popularity ratings of Congress. Instead of trying to recover popularity with their base, the Republicans have convinced the Chamber of Commerce to spend millions of dollars defeating conservative Republican โ€œtroublemakersโ€ in the 2016 primary cycle. Why join the base when the GOP thinks it can beat its base?

This then is why the Republican Party as we know it is coming to an end with only one way to avoid the splits that doomed the Whigs. When, not if, Donald Trump fades away, the party leaders will conclude they beat him and the crazy base. They will, like the Bourbons of France, learn nothing and forget nothing. Instead of realizing their broken promises and failures of leadership led to the rise of men like Donald Trump, they will conclude his decline means they need keep no promises.

The only way to save the GOP is for it to elect an outsider as its Presidential nominee who can lead the party in a fight against the President and the moral evils of the age. The party, as a hollow instrument to be controlled for ballot access will live on. But 2016 will be the moment many define as when the party left them instead of them leaving the party.

Morning, everyone. I’m refreshing my memory on the defects of the hackberry tree. I see now it was foolish to ask Shannon if his were cut down for lumber.

The wood of hackberry has never been used to any large extent due to its softness and an almost immediate propensity to rot when in contact with the elements.

If there’s one bunch of so called leaders and activists in America out of touch with their constituency, it’s the Latino crowd.

    Peggy Noonan:

Something is going on, some tectonic plates are moving in interesting ways. My friend Cesar works the deli counter at my neighborhood grocery store. He is Dominican, an immigrant, early 50s, and listens most mornings to a local Hispanic radio station, La Mega, on 97.9 FM. Their morning show is the popular โ€œEl Vacilรณn de la Maรฑana,โ€ and after the first GOP debate, Cesar told me, they opened the lines to call-ins, asking listeners (mostly Puerto Rican, Dominican, Mexican) for their impressions. More than half called in to say they were for Mr. Trump. Their praise, Cesar told me a few weeks ago, dumbfounded the hosts. I later spoke to one of them, who identified himself as D.J. New Era. He backed Cesarโ€™s story. โ€œWe were very surprised,โ€ at the Trump support, he said. Why? โ€œItโ€™s a Latin-based market!โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s the man,โ€ Cesar said of Mr. Trump. This week I went by and Cesar told me that after Mr. Trump threw Univisionโ€™s well-known anchor and immigration activist, Jorge Ramos, out of an Iowa news conference on Tuesday evening, the โ€œEl Vacilรณnโ€ hosts again threw open the phone lines the following morning and were again surprised that the majority of callers backed not Mr. Ramos but Mr. Trump. Cesar, who I should probably note sees me, I sense, as a very nice establishment person who needs to get with the new reality, was delighted.

Erickson is right in that article. The phenomena which is The Donald is owed at least in huge part to the Republican leadership’s constant attack against its conservative base. While Democrats have been thoroughly embracing its fundamentalist base, Republicans have been attacking theirs.

As fir Erickson and his credibility, the problem I see is how polarizing people are becoming. Say or do one thing and pronouncements of betrayal and retaliation via the pulling support to the point of career anihilation has become more and more common. I understand if it’s part of a backlash, and I think a lot of it is, against the beforementioned attacks on the Conservative base but beyond that I see no point. People at times will say or do something wrong or at least considered wrong. I do not agree with a few things George Will has recently said. Ditto that and more regarding Peggy Noonan. But I have not written them off. It’ll happen. They express something wrong, others express what they think is correct. That’s the world we live in.

When Sarah Palin was runing for vice president, she was under attack even from those onthe John McCain team. I read about a blogger who vowed to root out those behind these attacks. That blogger’s name was Eric Erickson. I cheered him because I liked Sarah Palin, a lot more than I did John McCain. Some things never change. Nothing really big came out of Erickson’s efforts somfar as I can remember but I appreciated his call to root out the culprits. Recently Erickson has, and in my estimation appropriately so, been under driticism for his attacks on the Palin family. He issued a weak apology and Sarah Palin did not accept it fully. She even responded in a way which Erickson, I think, will think hard before attacking her or anyone in her family again. That’s that so far as I’m concerned. Move on. I know
I’ve said and done things in the past which I regret but we move on. I am not a fan pe se of Erickson but I think he’s written some really good stuff and will continue to do so.

I know as racist and, when coming from young Hispanics, express a “fear” that Trump will throw them out of the country. ZZ Ward has really nice legs. From her videos I expected her to vamp on-stage with a sultry attitude. Other than a lot of leg the outfit would not have parents leaving the room. She plays a mean harmonica and played it a lot. That I did not know she did. There were two opening acts which meant there was at least one really obnoxious drunk when ZZ played. The second opening act was Marc Scibilia. They really rocked the audience. Three guitars and a drummer. The guy on bass was awesome. Their stuff on youtube sucks compared to what they played live. Look for better stuff from this act.

The crowd was small, the balcony was closed for not enough tickets sold to need it. The audience that was there knew most of her songs and she got it. ZZ moved into the crowd for a final encore. She performed some of her new songs. I like her trending into blues rock. The early songs of her’s she performed tonight sounded more hip hop. Her on-stage persona is more Joey Cook or Hailey Reinhart. I expected a Marilyn Monroe who could really sing. And sing this lady does. Hopefully she will come back to Houston at a venue that does not charge 8$ for a 12oz domestic beer in a can.

From few the facts that I know, it seems like a waste of time to me. Oh and folks are coming in from California, Alaska and Florida.

    Here’s an explanation about icons I found……

    10. Icons

The icon is an artistic depiction of Christ, the Mother of God and the Saints. God the Father cannot be painted, because He has never been seen. God the Holy Spirit has appeared as a dove and as “tongues of fire.” He may be shown in this way. God the Son became a man, and He may be painted in His human form.

Icons are more than sacred pictures. Everything about them is theological. For example, they are always flat, flat so that we who inhabit the physical world will understand that the world of the spirit where Christ, His Mother, the angels, the saints, and the departed dwell, is a world of mystery which cannot be penetrated by our five senses.

Customarily, Roman Catholicism has historically employed statues in its worship. The statues are life-like and three-dimensional. They seem to imitate the art of ancient Greece. Both arts are naturalistic. The Latins portray Christ, the Mother of God, the saints, even the angels, as if they were in a state of nature. This “naturalism” stems from the medieval idea that “grace perfects nature.”

The person or persons are represented on the icon as deified. He or she is not a perfect human being, but much more: They are transfigured and glorified. They have a new and grace-filled humanity.

Important to remember is the Latin theory of grace: It is created by God for man. Orthodoxy teaches, as we recall, that grace is uncreated, and impacts all creation. It is a mysterious extension of the Divine Nature. Orthodox iconography reflects this truth, even as Roman Catholic statues reflect its idea of grace.

Again, icons are a necessary part of Orthodox piety. The Orthodox honor and kiss icons, a devotion which passes from the icon to the person or persons represented in them. Icons are not idols and the Orthodox do not worship them. Worship is reserved for God alone. The statues set up in Roman Catholic temples are not commonly venerated; they are visual aids and decorations.

    Speaking of icons and statues….

Other than a statue of Jesus, you won’t find icons and statues in a Lutheran church in this part of the country.
You may recall that a long time ago I was involved in a war over a remodeling/building program at my church. I was stupid enough not only to accept an appointment to that first committee but to let them appoint me chair. It was the morning I was waiting (and sweating through my suit) to speak and convince a bunch of Germans to spend a million bucks on long-needed repairs and restorations that I realized how stupid I really am!
But back to the subject at hand…
We have this beautiful life size statue of Jesus that had been in a prominent place in the Sanctuary for (literally) a hundred years. When it was temporarily moved to annex area to facilitate the early stages of remodeling, you would have thought we were responsible for the re-cruxifiction of our Lord.

So I was the sparring partner that softened them up. The next guys knocked them out.
