Ten Examples of the Mandela Effect

Would you believe us if we told you the most famous line of… The Empire Strikes Back, was never uttered? Darth Vader doesn’t reveal his paternity to Luke Skywalker by saying, “Luke, I am your father.” He actually says, “No, I am your father.” The line is but one instance of what blogger Fiona Broome dubbed the “Mandela Effect” a decade ago, after she learned that a number of people shared her erroneous belief that human rights activist Nelson Mandela had perished in prison in the 1980s. (He died a free man in 2013.)

With apologies to conspiracy theorists, the idea of a shared false memory isn’t proof of alternate realities. It’s simply a product of how our brain works to retrieve information….“When you recall an event, you use memories around it, taking elements or pieces of other events and fitting them where they make sense.”

Here are ten examples of how our flawed memory processes create a changed reality in our heads.  What else do we remember incorrectly?  People “remember” what they want, in some instances. Other times, it’s just innocent, normal thought processes.

1. The Monopoly Man’s Monocle –

He never wore a monacle, but Mr. Peanut did.

That’s because our brain can easily take subjects with similar traits and blend them together. “In studies, when you show participants word pairs and ask them to remember ‘blackmail’ and ‘jailbird,’ half of them will later say they remember learning the word blackbird,” Brewer says.

2. Jiffy Peanut Butter

There is no Jiffy brand, but there is a Jif and a Skippy.

3. “Hello, Clarice”

The tense meetings between imprisoned cannibal Hannibal Lecter and FBI agent Clarice Starling fueled 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs, based on the Thomas Harris novel. “Hello, Clarice” has become a default line reading for people looking to emulate Anthony Hopkins’s creepy Lecter. But the killer never says the line in the movie. Instead, he says “Good morning” when meeting Starling for the first time. People remember Lecter greeting Starling and remember him saying “Clarice” in a melodic tone, creating a false memory of a classic non-quote. “Your memory can try to recreate things based on available evidence using context cues,” Brewer says.

4. The Fruit of the Loom Label

The food was never portrayed as spilling out of the horn, but as a pile of food.

… In other words, people who remember the cornucopia might not have a distinct memory of pulling on a pair of briefs and seeing it. “They remember fruit was involved, and then begin to think, ‘Well, how is fruit usually portrayed? Okay, maybe a cornucopia.’ That’s reconstruction.”

5. A Frowning Mona Lisa

Why do so many folks think she’s frowning instead of that smirk, that enigmatic smile?  Perhaps because they overlaying their memories of other images from other paintings, where frowns may be more of a norm.

6. Ed McMahon and the Publishers Clearing House

A lot of people remember McMahon and the prize patrol, but McMahon actually promoted a competing sweepstakes, American Family Publishers, and he never was on a PCH prize patrol.

…It’s an example of what Brewer refers to as source confusion: You may remember a detail like McMahon appearing on television but not the source—in this case, a rival sweepstakes promotion.

7. The Berenstain Bears Fail a Spelling Bee

The Berenstain Bears have been imparting life lessons for children in a series of illustrated books since 1962. The bears are even named after their creators, Stan and Jan Berenstain, meaning the name appears at least twice on the book covers. So why do some readers insist it’s spelled “Berenstein”? It’s likely due to the fact kids may have seen the name misspelled in newspaper articles or in handwritten references from other kids or adults. According to Brewer, it’s a bit of a self-perpetuating problem: “There were studies in the 1980s that showed when students were exposed to misspelled words in an education setting as a way to test their spelling proficiency, the misspelled words got recorded in their memory and interfered with their ability to spell the words correctly in the future.”

8. C-3PO’s Golden Moment

Star Wars fans remember 3PO as a totally golden creature, but his lower right leg was silver.

… “People trying to reconstruct an event are taking whatever information they can, which can mean glossing over things or making inferences,” Brewer says. Unless you stared at the droid’s leg, you probably just assumed he was the same color all over.

9. Risky Business

Cruise didn’t include sunglasses in his skimpy dancing attire.

… The mistake likely comes from seeing Cruise in the shades in other scenes or in the film’s advertising material. “When you watch a movie, it’s a big chunk of information,” Brewer says. “And a lot of things happen in that chunk. When you go back to recreate it, you’ll get interference from other things that happened in the movie.”

10. Kazaam, not Shazam

The most startling example of the Mandela Effect? The widespread belief that an entire feature film exists titled Shazam (or Shazaam) starring actor and comedian Sinbad as a genie. What people are recollecting is probably Kazaam, a 1996 comedy starring NBA great Shaquille O’Neal as a wish-granting mystical figure. Part of the confusion stems from the fact that Sinbad appeared in several children’s films in the 1990s. One of them, First Kid, reportedly had a preview for Kazaam on the VHS release, which could have strengthened the tendency to reconstruct the actor as starring in it rather than O’Neal. This one is so convincing even Brewer himself says he’s caught himself “remembering” it.

**********************************

Should these processes that lead to false memories be considered flaws? Not exactly. Current theories in psychology are exploring the idea that our ability to cull details from past experiences to create theoretical concepts is actually part of a survival mechanism. “Taking episodes from our past allows us to construct possible futures and anticipate those events,” Brewer says. “It makes us adaptive to new environments.” Like living in a world without Jiffy.

What in the hell is going on with Houston cops ?

He’s walking away, unarmed, from fighting with a guy who was vandalizing his car. The perp goes to his car, gets a gun and shoots this young man several times and kills him. He’s a husband and father.

HPD releases the shooter and, so far, he has been charged with nothing ?

I remember having to get a passport when Lovely and I were preparing for our trip to Italy. That was the year that the passport process got badly backlogged. I waited weeks and weeks (good thing I started the process early!), but we were getting down to the wire when I heard that if I went in person and waited in line, I could get it done in a day. So I did.

Over twelve hours in line, probably a lot more. It was a long time ago.

The best thing I did was to bring a folding stool with me. While others had to stand on their feet all day or sit on the floor, I could sit on that stool and rest my back; and I could avoid the strain of getting up and down all day as the line slowly moved from one building down a hallway to another building to a serpentine line…you get the idea.

There was some Democrat, Nick something, who was my Congressman at the time, and I had contacted his office to see if he could help. The day after I got my passport, I got a phone call from his office. I remember standing in the Wal-Mart parking lot and talking to the lady staffer:

Her: “Hello, I’m *Linda* from Nick Something’s office. We got your request for help with your passport and want to see how we can help.”

Me: “Well, you’re a day late! I stood in line all day yesterday (gave a brief description of passport hell day) and got my passport taken care of.”

Her: “Oh, I’m sorry you had to go through that, but I’m glad you got it taken care of.”

Me: “Actually, I’ve been dealing with a lot of crap from my family lately, and yesterday was the least stressful day I’ve had in a long time.”

Her: /laughing/ “Well, that’s the first time I’ve heard something like that! I hope things get better! Let us know if you need any more help.”

    She was actually very nice.

I had to walk through an emergency passport renewal at Houston’s Mickey Leland Federal Courthouse around 2002, in a May heat wave, in an office jam-packed with dozens and dozens of Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi immigrants trying to get documents. The AC was broken down for the whole building. Do you know what it’s like to be in a building with those people with temperatures close to 100 and humidity in the 80%+ ? I went out and sat in the courtyard area on the street to get a break from the aroma.

I walked out after about 2 hours soaking wet with a new passport to go to North Africa for $45 or $50. Today, it’s going to cost me $130 to renew my passport plus the cost of a new certified birth certificate.

Finally checking in. I may go outside for a little while, pending mosquitoes. I’m going to try vanilla water as a mosquito repellant. If it works, I’ll be happy trade out my Deet products.

I got all of my rosaries blessed this morning. The first Sunday is Blessing Table day, and a lady convinced me to go ahead and get my creations blessed. After that I went outside to wait for Hubby to pick me up and I got to hug Sebastian, my family of girls, and visit with some adults I haven’t seen in a while. When we get our parking garage finished, I anticipate the old regulars will be back. And it’s getting closer – almost all of the floors are in place. We’re told the end of July will be opening day for use.

One of those girls just loves to hug me. This morning, she clamped her arms around my waist and refused to let go. She is such a darling. All of them are.

Once a Wall Street buzzword, ESG—Environmental, Social, and Governance—has become a political flashpoint and a corporate headache. Investor enthusiasm for ESG is clearly waning. The Manhattan Institute’s Proxy Monitor project has tracked such proposals for years. In 2024, it found that zero environmental or social policy proposals received majority shareholder support at Fortune 250 companies. But that doesn’t mean ESG is going away. Instead, it’s evolving—and its next battleground could be your favorite candy bar or soda.

After years of climate and racial equity-focused proposals, ESG activists are now shifting their attention to nutrition. The latest campaign appears to be against “unhealthful products.” Academics are branding this movement “ESG + Nutrition,” arguing that investors should aim to “align financial returns with benefits for society and the planet.”

Shannon, the link from Yahoo is a crap article from the Daily Beast.

This Airways Magazine has a much better report on the situation. It appears the problem is the well-known, decades long neglect of technical systems and the fact the Biden administration decided it would be intelligent to move the regional ATC center from Long Island to Philadelphia last summer. They had to have lost a lot of people in that move. Before Obama left office the FAA reclassified Newark so there is no limit on the flight load there.

This is absolutely horrifying. I’m telling you the Russians are like animals.

Summary and Key Points: North Korea has faced catastrophic losses among its troops fighting alongside Russia in Ukraine, with nearly 50 percent casualties reported.

-British intelligence estimates over 5,000 North Korean casualties, including one-third killed in action. Deployed initially near Kursk under Russian command, North Korean forces, disguised with forged documents, engaged in costly mass infantry assaults known as “meat assaults.”

    and,

British intelligence reported that as of March this year, troops from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea who were sent to fight against the Ukrainian Armed Forces have suffered nearly 50 percent losses in the field. This story has pretty much made my day. There was a report, unconfirmed so far, that Greta Thunberg was supposed to have boarded the ship in Malta earlier.

(May 4, 2025 / JNS) A Gaza-bound ship that was reportedly hit by drones last week is unable make port after the Republic of Palau revoked its flag rights, the Hamas-linked Freedom Flotilla Coalition claimed on Saturday.

Authorities in Malta, Greece and Turkey have threatened to confiscate the vessel if it docks at their ports, Tighe Barry, a U.S.-based anti-Israel activist with the CodePink group, told the Associated Press.

“To get a new flag will take months, so they’re just stuck out there,” said Barry, an octogenarian who was supposed to board the vessel before it would attempt to run the Israeli blockade of Gaza.

Barry said the Pacific island nation, which often votes with Israel at the U.N., revoked the flag of the ship, named Conscience, before the drone attack.

BEN GURION AIRPORT, Israel – A missile fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebels towards Israel on Sunday landed near Ben Gurion Airport, the country’s main international airport, sending a plume of smoke into the air and causing panic among passengers in the terminal building.

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis, who claimed responsibility for the missile strike, have recently intensified missile launches at Israel, saying they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

A senior Israeli police commander, Yair Hetzroni, showed reporters a crater caused by the impact of the missile, which airport authorities said had landed beside a road near a Terminal 3 parking lot.

Workers throughout China are flooding the streets in revolt as U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs slam the fragile Chinese export economy.

From the cramped streets of Sichuan in the southwest to the cold outskirts of Inner Mongolia in the northeast, furious workers are demanding back pay and protesting mass layoffs as factories shutter under pressure from Trump’s tariffs.

Outside a LED light manufacturing plant near Shanghai, thousands of unpaid workers shouted furiously at company managers over wages that haven’t been paid since January.

In central China’s Dao County, a similar scene unfolded outside a sporting goods store after the company abruptly shut down last week without paying employees.

Then you really should read Gordon Chang.

[O]n April 24 about a dozen Chinese officials, including a “high-ranking official from the Chinese Ministry of Finance,” were seen entering the U.S. Treasury’s main building in Washington at 7:00 in the morning as Chinese security officials attempted to prevent photographers from recording the entry.

    and,

Beijing has ordered its airlines not to take delivery of Boeing aircraft, and the plane maker has now flown back, from China to the U.S., three 737 Max aircraft that were about to be delivered. Due to the long order backlogs at both Boeing and Airbus, this punishment imposes, as a practical matter, almost no cost on Boeing. Yet if Trump were to order Boeing not to deliver parts or provide services to Chinese airlines, China would soon have to ground a large number of its airliners.

Well good. It’s about time. I’m for cutting everything off from California.

The National Institutes of Health is having second thoughts about a behemoth $89 billion contract it awarded to a seemingly dormant California nonprofit organization during the final days of former president Joe Biden’s term.

The National Cancer Institute, a subsidiary of the NIH, awarded a 25-year, $89 billion contract to the Alliance for Advancing Biomedical Research to operate a cancer research lab at Maryland’s Fort Detrick on January 17, just three days before Biden left office. The reward marked a remarkable turn of fortune for the nascent nonprofit organization, which shares close ties to the University of California’s National Laboratories but hadn’t raised or spent a penny since its founding in 2022, according to its available Form 990 tax filings. The nonprofit group exists with the “specific purpose to operate exclusively for the benefit of, to perform the functions of, and/or to carry out the purposes of The Regents of the University of California,” according to its 2022 tax filing.

    and look at this…

The nonprofit’s close ties to the University of California was of great concern to Grassley, who noted in his February 26 letter to NIH acting director Matthew Memoli that the university has a record of keeping about 40 percent of its federal research funding for research costs, a figure that far exceeds the Trump administration’s cap on such expenditures at 15 percent.

    plus,

“It has been reported that between 1987 and 2021, at least 162 scientists who had worked at Los Alamos [National Laboratory] returned to China to support a variety of domestic research and development programs, including at least 59 who were involved with China’s talent programs,” Grassley wrote. “It appears that the University of California’s inability to keep China out of U.S. R&D is an issue that spans nearly four decades.”

The Saturday Coffee & Covid includes the following:

This week’s study was organized by co-author and Florida Surgeon General Joe Ladapo, a Harvard-trained M.D. and PhD. Impeccably credentialed MIT professor of statistics Retsef Levi also joined. They brilliantly scraped Florida’s Medicare database and compared the two jabs against each other, specifically, their risks of dying from any cause —“all-cause mortality”— and they found a statistically undeniable +40% risk of fatality following the Pfizer jab over Moderna.

In other words, hundreds of thousands more Floridians died in the 12 months following the Pfizer jab than Moderna, when there should have been no difference at all. Specifically, they found that +230 more people died after Pfizer for every 100,000 jabbed. Not only that, but Pfizer getters died from cardiovascular causes at a rate of +83 more often per 100,000.

The SOBs can’t kill me that easily. I do have at least 7 ongoing medical problems I did not have before I took the Pfizer injections in March of 2021. Most of these are immune-related and the rest of my family has no similar history.

Occasionally there are public mentions of the progress or lack thereof lawsuits against the two big companies for their failed covid products. One must conclude that their lawyers are trying to drag those out as long as they can…. A pox on their houses.

Interesting is the difference between the two “modern” drugs. “Ancient” Ivermectin was/is safer/better than both of them. And long on the open market….

In September of 2023 my brother’s wife’s, sister’s son was murdered, stabbed in the neck during the night while sleeping alongside his wife at their home in Houston. I mentioned it here at the time and found it odd there were virtually no news reports of the incident and until now, there continued to be none. Supposedly they have a suspect but the case remains unsolved, very strange. Family believes the ex-wife has to be involved somehow but I don’t know if law enforcement has ever said that.

All of a sudden, some eighteen months later they decide to join up with Crime Stoppers and launch a media blitz offering a reward for any information leading to a conviction. The parents have made the rounds on all the news stations, you locals might have seen it, here is one of them –

I would assume HCSD detectives have new evidence they are unwilling to reveal right now, but they believe public pressure might break other evidence loose. My theory anyway. May God lead them to this evil bastard.

Stabbed while sleeping beside his wife? She didn’t wake up? She didn’t see anything? Well, I hope they get some leads. Your family has more than their share of evil inflicted upon them.

If you want to cut a trillion, you have to start somewhere. One-quarter of a triillion seems like a pretty good initial trim and they did it in the first 90 days of a new administration. They are still having to work off the old Biden budget and haven’t even had the chance to install a Trump budget yet. I’m impressed.

Sam Elliot usually plays the same character, just in different roles, a lot like John Wayne. I think his natural character/personality is most likely pretty good to be around so he just gets to be himself.

In the 1923 series there was also some bizarre, gratuitous sexual deviancy. Sheridan is blowing it and needs to cut it out. Or he will ruin his lofty career.
