What he said; Ali MacGraw. ‘Nuff said. She was/is very attractive, not the drop dead gorgeous type but the cute SEXY Girl-Next-Door type. Well, I’ve had my beauty rest after the big Thanksgiving preparation, meal and nice visit with our kinfolk yesterday. Call me crazy but I still enjoy an old fashioned Thanksgiving and when my wife said she wasn’t sure BIL & SIL were coming, (sister was) I said “well, you know me I’ll fix a big meal no matter who or if anyone shows up”. 😉
Life is Good and Mornin’ Gang
What? No comments on the Christmas decorations and snow?
I thought it was a shooting gallery.
I couldn’t find the Christmas decorations and snow, where were they?
They are gone today, a floating Santa on his sled and reindeer in the snow. Pew Pew.
It’s 40 with bright sunshine here in the woods… We have both a crockpot and an Instant one which can be used as a slow cooker 😉 I just never think to use the InstaPot unless it’s a new recipe…
Great day yesterday. Youngest son and his galfriend hosted, a good mix of her family and ours. Luckily, all good peeps politically. 😀
Her mom did the traditional baked turkey, my family would shoot me if I didn’t fry a turkey, always very good.
When Ali was young, in spite of the schmaltzy Love Story role, always reminded me of a girl you could get in trouble with. She had that look in her eye. I had a big crush on her though. Her mother was a Hungarian Jewish immigrant and artist.
McGraw had three brief marriages between 21 and 39 years old. After movie producer Robert Evans and Steve McQueen, to whom she was married the longest, I think she gave up on the marriage idea and has remained so for the last 46 years.
always reminded me of a girl you could get in trouble with.
Yup, exactly. 😉
We had a fine Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. My sister brought collard greens and two homemade pies, SIL brought her dressing and I fixed the rest. As usual we put the food on the counter, buffet style. Good eating and it was good to get together with the family on the blessed day. SIL, Dave, wife and sister, BIL was taking the picture.
Six Democrat members of Congress had death threats made against them yesterday. I don’t believe we have to sit around and wonder which pro-Hamas/Hezbollah mob is doing this.
In other news, SIL bagged a nice 8 pointer late yesterday after bagging a big doe in the morning.
FWIW; The kids eat venison about 90% of the time at their house. They usually have three deer in the freezer and will have consumed them by the start of the next season.
My @ 8:10 AM “Do you like my hat?” 😀
Super Dave
I forgot to tell you I always skipped the part of the brining recipe where it says to “refrigerate the brined turkey uncovered for 6 hours to dry out the skin.”
It doesn’t work, but for some reason, I did it this time and don’t know if it contributed to the sorry turkey I ended up with.
I did that part and my turkey came out moist and falling off the bone tender. Just like last year it was a big hit. My family thinks I can cook. 😀
Make a compound butter, put into a gallon ziplock bag and cut a corner off. Squirt the butter under the skin and smoosh it around to get fairly even coverage. Smear any leftover butter all over the turkey.
Put into a 550F oven. After 20 minutes reduce heat to 325 and cover breast meat loosely with foil. Roast to 160. Remove and let rest for at least 20 minutes. I rest mine covered with a folded towel for at least an hour.
I never buy the name-brand; I always get the loss leader 49c/lb special and they always turn out good.
Maybe you just got a dud.
Texas’ First Case of Dengue Fever
I recall earlier this year a person flew into Texas and then died in a hospital with dengue fever. This looks like somebody down in the RIo Grande Valley was bitten by an infected mosquito.
Texas’ first locally transmitted case of dengue fever in 2024 has been recorded as the state is experiencing its highest annual case count in decades, officials say.
The mosquito-driven virus was found in a resident of Cameron County, which is the southernmost county in the state, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
“It has been a highly active year for dengue virus globally. As of today, there have been 106 travel-associated dengue cases, including one death reported in Texas,” the agency said Monday.”
Texas health officials are urging the public to take precautions against mosquito bites, such as wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellent, and removing standing water that can serve as mosquito breeding grounds.
From yesterday;
What in the world is a $70 turkey?
Much less a $55 one.
My 15 Lb “Pig” branded turkey was, $15.13 @ $.99 a pound and it was very good. FWIW; Last year, $2 bucks a pound was as good as you could do here in Podunk.
Most or all of the turkeys here come from Pennsylvania. I don’t know why they are so much more expensive in NJ.
We’ve been watching Northern Exposure from the beginning and have made it almost to the end of season #3. I spotted this over yonder and thought it was pretty good.
34 years ago, July 12, 1990, Northern Exposure premiered. It is an American comedy-drama television series about the eccentric residents of a fictional small town in Alaska, that ran on CBS from July 12, 1990, to July 26, 1995, with a total of 110 episodes. It received 57 award nominations during its six-season run and won 27, including the 1992 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, two additional Primetime Emmy Awards, four Creative Arts Emmy Awards, and two Golden Globes.
In the show Rob Morrow played New York City native Joel Fleischman, a recently graduated physician who is obligated to practice in Anchorage, Alaska, for several years to repay the state of Alaska for underwriting his medical education. Much to his chagrin, he is assigned to the much smaller and remote town of Cicely, which is in need of a general practitioner. Originally the show focused on Fleischman’s fish-out-of-water experiences in rural Alaska but as it progressed, it became more of an ensemble show, focusing on various other Cicely residents.
“The level of conscious disregard on the part of 60 Minutes and its lineup of lab-coat liars boggles the mind.”
The MSM acts like this and then whines that everybody hates them.
Recently, 60 Minutes did a feature on abortion policies in Texas, hoping to make a case that abortion laws are scaring doctors and jeopardizing the well-being of pregnant women in Texas.
To make its point, CBS enlisted the help of a doctor from New Mexico and a handful of physicians interested in scoring political points at the cost of misleading Texas women.
Dr. Eve Espey claimed that residents in Texas “lack an opportunity to learn trauma-informed care, diagnosing pregnancy complications in the first trimester and in the second trimester. They miss learning miscarriage care, ectopic pregnancy care, pregnancy of unknown location.”
Unfortunately for Espey’s and 60 Minutes’ credibility, none of that is true.
The organization Secular Pro-life posted this specific portion of the 60 Minutessegment to its Instagram account and pointed out that the blocks and rotations residents receive at UT Southwestern include Obstetrics and Gynecology Emergency Services (OGES), Obstetrics, and Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
RE: my 8:48 AM comment
I don’t do social media, but it would be nice if those who do would give the Texas Scorecard article about 60 Minutes as much exposure as possible. This is an abomination and needs to be posted everywhere.
You come into the USA illegally, some American in Colorado not only gives you a job, but also lets you live in their basement. And then you decide to rape his 14 year old daughter.
In Colorado, he is being held on $5,500 bail.
You read that right – $5,500 and how long do you think it will be before some left wing organization bails him out and he flees back over the border ?
If you missed it you might want to go back to Texpat’s @ 11:41 AM yesterday’s Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen by O. Henry.
It is well worth the read and I think it’s been posted here before, Ii know I’ve read it before.
I guess Santa and the snowflakes are back and GJT, you’re right, it looks like a shooting gallery. 😀
Speaking of Northern Exposure…I love this guy, a great character actor. Here’s 69 photos.
Maurice Minnefield
Barry’s full given name is Leonard Barrie Corbin, and he was born on October 16, 1940 in Lamesa, Texas, to Kilmer Blain Corbin, an attorney & TX State Senator, and Alma Corbin, an elementary school teacher. Barry and his wife Jo share a ranch in Fort Worth, Texas. He says when he isn’t working, he rides horses there every chance he gets.
One of the best ever, character actor that is.
Barry Corbin; “Hell I’d piss on a spark plug if I thought it’d help“. 😀
From War Games.
Had BSue and I not been stupid and divorced the first time around, we would have made 49 years of marriage today. As it is we are on track for a strong 29 years in April, God willing. Lemme tell ya God has a great sense of humor, GRACE and MERCY/
The last 10 or so turkeys that I have baked have all been baked in a plastic bag. The breast is always juicy and the meat falls off the bone. The process is idiot proof. Buy the bag in the grocery store and follow the directions on the box on basic procedure, season it as you wish.
They’re so easy that way that even I can cook a turkey 😉
The Matt Gaetz sexcapades story is detailed in this post. The wanton flouting of the law and deviousness/criminality of those in government at all levels is astounding.
PICTURES we need PICTURES.
Is it possible to add an off button for Santa, his reindeer, and the snowflakes please?
What you do not like Santa and snow? LOL
The whole thing winds up being Bonecrusher repellant.
Prolly not one of my better ideas
The Santa psyop claims its first casualty.
RIP SANTA
That is so cool
Remember curser trails that used to adorn blogs. When you move your cursor you might have stars or rainbows following? I found some that are really really annoying like cats or bubbles. These things are so annoying Texpat would be forced to ban me.
I thought those were a dumb idea, too.
Just shows to go ya’ you can’t leave Dave unsupervised. 😀
I honestly thought I was over getting shocked by the Biden/Harris criminal enterprise.
Marc Andreessen, the billionaire investor and co-founder of the influential Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, revealed in a new episode of Joe Rogan’s podcast that after an “alarming” meeting with Biden administration officials earlier this year was the moment he would have no other choice but to support Donald Trump.
They weren’t only planning malicious censorship, the Democrats were going to implement full-blown Socialist Fascism like the Third Reich or Mussolini. Allow a few huge corporations on the government leash and make sure no other free enterprise could even startup.
For decades, Andreessen has supported Democrats, including Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton. However, a troubling spring meeting with Biden administration officials caused major concerns. During the meeting, officials explained their plan to control AI through government regulatory capture—a strategy reminiscent of Communist policies in China.
“We had meetings [Biden officials] this spring that were the most alarming meetings I’ve ever been in. Where they were taking us through their plans, and it was – basically just full government – full government control – like this sort of thing, there will be a small number of large companies that will be completely regulated and controlled by the government, they told us. They said don’t even start startups – there’s just no way that they can succeed – there’s no way that we’re going to permit that to happen.”
And I always thought that Trump was the Fascist?!?! ~SPITS~
Since I’m not the most religious member of my family, we asked BIL to say the blessing yesterday and dang if he didn’t include Trump and saving the country in it. Not to worry though it was a short prayer. 😉
Remember curser trails that used to adorn blogs.
i was always partial to these.
You mean they really aren’t there anymore?
It’s just me?
🙂
Member Nancy Drew and Wino from LST? I just stumbled across a picture of them over yonder.
I am reminded of the mythological fight against the Hydra…
This sort of crap is precisely the kind of thing that needs to get nuked via DOGE. Wipe out entire agencies and lay off the staff; take whatever pensions may have been earned at feed it into the Social Security funds.
Finally jumping into the pool. I took a muscle relaxant last night because all of the standing in the kitchen yesterday took its toll. I checked my numbers – horrible! – and have decided to fast today. I can definitely afford to do so. I started freeze drying all those cheese chips yesterday (half tray of avocado, too), and they were ready to be unloaded and vacuum packed this morning. Hubby and Handsome are at the Autorama today; Hubby in his whIn a bit eelchair. That thing has certainly come in handy. I made four rosaries and visited with my neighbor, who just returned from Puerto Vallarta on a family vacation. Her brother passed away while on the trip, so she’s got issues with her mother (who doted on the brother, despite the fact that the brother was a royal financial and emotional PITA for everyone else). Her sister had to take on all of the burden of dealing with the distraught mother who never accepted that her son was in organ failure for months and never prepared herself for the inevitable. I feel for my neighbor, but I’m glad she was able to focus on being with her family.
So, I somehow ended up on a series of YT videos of Christians defending the faith against Islam. I have one of those on now as I sit on my back porch. I am sitting in the sun, in my special back chair, with my laptop in place. I think I’m going to focus on my Latin studies and developing my rosary making class today.
‘cuz I’m not doing much cooking today. In a bit I’ll go and make some soup out of that simmering carcass in my crockpot, so Hubby and Handsome will have something to eat when they come home.
The first mosquito has found me. I’ll see how long this little back porch paradise lasts…
Was it one of those Dengue Fever mosquitos ?
Most Americans don’t realize how the best and worst ideas in this nation start and get exported into the general population very quickly.
I’m a Black PhD. and Here’s Why I left Academia
A tide of grievance has swept through academia, leaving in its wake the irrelevance of intention, the concept of microaggressions, the use of critical social justice as an ideological foundation, and a narrative that renders White people perpetual oppressors. What’s more, the new grievance believes critical thinking is inherently White, critical inquiry is tantamount to a violent attack, and minorities, especially Black people, as rendered perpetually oppressed.
These sentiments had been lingering for years but became the cudgels of social justice initiatives at colleges and universities all over the country. Entire fields, especially my field of rhetoric and composition, were captured, even if the initiatives contradicted a field’s primary purpose. Wokeness’ usurpation of academia was swift, relentless and egregiously illiberal.
I have little confidence in academia. My confidence was initially shaken by the fact that critical thinking, a key outcome of a college education, became critical feeling. Sadly, that critical feeling skewed negative and reflected intolerance of anything that did not center and emphasize resentment toward Western Civilization. I discovered this when I was told by colleagues, in vitriolic fashion, that the concepts of argumentation, knowledge of standard English, and reason, itself, were considered “White ways of knowing.”
Absolute criminal behavior with a skillet. Nothing short of horrifying!
BAWHAHAHAHA!!!!!! She put sugar in her cornbread! Hand over your Southern Card. 😀 That was great!
That was the straw that broke the camel’s back but it all started with putting the I CAN’T SAY IT in the dishwasher!!!
Yeah, I remember when Shannon’s young first wife put my mother’s Lodge cast iron skillet in the dishwasher. She was from Pennsylvania and didn’t know any better.
I received a phone call from Kiki, the DFPS social worker, earlier this afternoon. she’s been trying for weeks to get MHarper to respond via phone, door knock, and mail for weeks but no response. Fearing the worst, I borrowed my neighbor’s husband (since Hubby was not available) and we went to her house.
We checked her mailbox first, and it was empty. I heaved a sigh of relief and then we knocked on her door. Marilyn popped right out from her back door (the front door doesn’t open) and she greeted us. She vaguely remembered me from our last visit and I introduced her to my neighbor. She asked why we were there, and I said we were just out enjoying the gorgeous weather and thought we’d drop by to check on her. “Making sure I’m alive” was her response. I told Kiki she at least still has her sense of humor. That’s a good sign.
She showed us around her backyard, pointing a tree that is covered in beautiful pink blooms right now. We went inside, and had a conversation where I tried to get some family info that I could pass on to Kiki, who is going to do a genealogy/family trace to locate some family member other than her son. From what the neighbor told us, putting her care into the hands of her son is not a good idea. I managed to dredge a few more family details out of Marilyn, which have been passed on to Kiki.
Kiki asked me for my opinions on Marilyn’s care: a memory care assisted living facility or some kind of in-home care. I recommended the latter, emphasizing that to take her away from her cats might actually kill her. She lives for those cats. Marilyn is still able to feed and care for herself, her kitchen is clean, and she had groceries in her refrigerator. Kiki agreed and will move forward with that recommendation.
So, MHarper is doing well today. Today was a better visit than the last one. When I told my neighbor “Today’s visit is 100 times better than the last one” he responded “Really?!” /smile/ Kiki is going to try the back door next time, if she gets no response from the front door knock.
Thank you for that good news.
And blessed be the cats that keep her going.
Thank you so much for doing this. I am not optimistic about this coming to a good end though, despite your fine efforts.
I will say, I have some of the best neighbors evvverrrr. They just returned from a family vacation, and they were both on board with “May I borrow your husband in case my friend is flat on the floor of her house? Maybe dead?” No hesitation with him jumping in my car.
NIMBY strikes again and again
An Orphan In Its Land: The Sad Fate of the USS Texas – The Second World War may be long over, but one of its most iconic battleships, the USS Texas (BB-35) is fighting its most important campaign in its long, storied life. That is the fight for this legendary steel beast to find a permanent home.
Good grief.
The problem is not only dredging a channel to a permanent docking site, but not putting the ship in a place where it sits in the mud. It’s probably a hard thing to do around Galveston Bay with the draft on that battleship.
Damn it, if George Mitchell were still alive he would buy those restaurants and then fire the whiny, complaining owners.
Well, if Texas doesn’t want her,,,,Move her to the deep lagoon at Puerto Vallarta. I’ll move down there for a low-six-figure salary and run the operation.
I think Beaumont previously expressed an interest in berthing the Texas.
But for me to move over there, it’ll take seven figures. Maybe eight.
God Bless you Tedtam, thank you so much.
Amen <3 <3 <3
What GJT said. Tedtam I agree that she (MHarper) should stay home with the cats. That is her purpose. My Mom died immediately after the Doctor said she should be in a nursing home. In fact she was there for 1 day. I’ll stop there
Here is where I’m afraid it ends though…
MHarper sets out for the grocery store to buy cat food. She gets there and makes her purchases. She takes a wrong turn out of the parking lot, drives through a few lights and becomes lost. Somebody tries to help her, calls 911, HPD shows up and they have her taken to a hospital because she cannot give them a single family or friend’s name.
Harper cannot pass any real psych exam testing for competency. She has figured out a narrow tiny way to survive, but that doesn’t mean she’ll be safe forever. If she had family around to assist her in paying her bills, protecting her assets, getting in-home care things would be different.
I’m hoping that Kiki can track down her younger sister, who is ten years younger than MHarper. Maybe a nephew or niece, if nothing else.
I thought she was the youngest of siblings. I didn’t know she had a younger sister.
I may have said youngest last time; either Marilyn or I were mistaken. Today she said she was the oldest of six. Couldn’t remember her 3 brothers’ names. I think my neighbor was shocked at how much she couldn’t remember about her own family.
She rarely mentioned her husband, never brought up her own son and I don’t remember hardly any mention of family out around Abilene.
I tried to keep my grandmother at home forever but she became too much to care for the last 2 or 3 years and her dementia was pretty severe. I visited her if not every day, every other day at the nursing home.
My mother was able to stay in her beloved home to the end with my brother, Fay and a friend’s help.
I finagled every way I could to keep a family aunt in her home up here until she died with me holding her hand in her family room.
Old people can’t do it alone no matter how hard they try. They have to have help and it needs to start long before they lose their wits.

still counting manufacturing votes in Californication so they can steal district 13 race. They already succeeded in stealing district 45. The totalitariancrat is up by 100 now after manufacturing ballots since the election.
and if you believe the kammunist got 74 million votes then you must believe I’m the Santa Claus that was parading across this screen earlier today and yesterday.
i bet they manufactured 10 million extra ones for her in the last 24 days in order to minimize the a$$ whooping she actually got.
I finished separating meat from turkey bones, and have nine pint jars of turkey and turkey broth ready to can tomorrow. I left one turkey leg for Hubby to chomp on tomorrow.
About 24 hours from now the Horns are going to embarrass those Aggies in College Station.
I’m watching old “Dragnet” shows. The police photographer just showed up with his camera requiring a flash bulb for each photo. They must’ve had to carry a load of those things everywhere.
