Father’s Day Weekend Open Comments

Robert D. Johnson, ca. 1945

19-year-old student at College Of Pharmacy UT Austin

A number of years ago we talked about everyone posting a picture of their Dad on Father’s Day. Our new format makes it pretty easy to post a picture from your Photos into your Comment.

Come on! Let’s see some dads!

Dad N me @ Kowaliga Beach, Lake Martin summer of 1955, I’d have been a year and a half old. I’ve posted this before but it’s one of my favorites.

(There aren’t any photos like this of me and Daddy. As all second-borns know, three years later the bloom is off the rose . 🙂 )

It’s kinda weird to see and realize how young your parents were. Dad was 26 years old here. You can also detect the misshapen right foot sock missing a big toe. He was working nights in a McCamey, Texas block ice plant at 16 years old trying to make money to go to college. It was WWII wartime and all rubber was severely rationed so Dad was working on the ice saw with old leather shoes on. He slipped and cut off 2 toes. Dad was still on crutches when he went to Austin to attend UT.

This is the famous Psycho Squirrel. He comes at 7:00 most mornings to the back door, climbs on the railing, taps on the glass demanding nuts for breakfast for him and his girlfriend. If we don’t give him any Psycho will hurl himself off the railing onto the door glass, fall to the deck, climb up and do it again until we feed him. It’s like extortion.

June 14, 1970 was the date my dad was killed in an auto accident. June 14th is the date of numerous tragedies and deaths in our family so most of us try not to mark it as a day coming around. I didn’t realize it had came and went yesterday until this morning, that is a good thing.

I’m going to try and learn how to post some pictures. Is it a simple copy and paste now?

Funny thing about names, and being named after someone… Mama always said that they were so sure my older brother was going to be a girl named “Bobbie Ann” that they were completely at a loss when he came out male – because Daddy hated being Jr so much that he said NO WAY would my brother be saddled with “the third” so Big Bro got 2 uncles’ middle names… And I was “Sue” or “Susie” before I was born – grateful to not become “A Boy Named Sue” – but was called Sue or Susie until I got to a grade level where 2/3 of the girls in my class had “Sue” for a middle name, so I got stuck with the double name stuff until I was in Jr High – where my first teacher/band director announced that NOBODY needed 2 names, so I should get used to “Bobbie”as there were others named Sue…

Steve rode 26 miles from Navasota to the TAMU Campus as part of a cancer fundraiser that our college unicycle club did. All those hills! He and one other guy made the whole trip on one wheel.

I drove the “protect the rear and pickup” vehicle. When your thighs are your brakes and the only gas for going uphill, and there’s no coasting – I was amazed at his perseverence.

Here is the only image I have of my paternal grandfather. He’s with my grandmother, and I believe this was outside of the church just after my eldest sister’s baptism. From what I hear, he was a mean old coot and played poker with the movers and shakers. The name “Sakowitz” comes to mind. That’s how Grandpa won six cemetery plots at Rosewood Cemetery – in a poker game.

I never got to know them. Grandpa was born and lived his early years in Poggioreale, Sicily, before the family moved here. The story I heard about Grandma is that Grandpa was accompanying a cousin to Beaumont to see Cousin’s romantic interest. Grandpa saw Grandma’s picture at the house and said “I’m going to marry her.” And he did. I still have the postcards he sent to her. I’d love to get them translated some day.

Here’s Hubby with Handsome Son, who wanted to help his Daddy with the shaving efforts. My kids wore my t-shirts for jammies when they were little; I thought that was not only cute, but very cost effective (didn’t have to buy separate nighttime outfits) and easy (slip on, slip off). That’s why Baby Handsome has that off-the-shoulder look.

  36. Tedtam Avatar
    Tedtam

I’m hoping this picture isn’t too grainy. It’s one of my absolute favorite Father pics – we were on vacation and Hubby was putting Handsome Son down for a nap.

He loves his kids. When they were little he especially adored being around them.

  37. Tedtam Avatar

This last one is my favorite (among many, I’ll admit) of Hubby being Daddy with his kids. In this one, two-year-old Lovely Daughter is helping her father wash his work van. I remember taking a picture of her efforts – a series of little swirls at her height, about six of them, down one side of the white van. She was so proud of her work! Hubby just chuckled and when she went inside washed over her efforts. He used to hold her in his lap and watch her TV shows with her. I remember how we’d both laugh at her dancing to Winnie the Pooh’s “Blustery Day,” her favorite. Somewhere I have a pic of him holding her in the hospital after her birth. His hands were so large and she was so little, that there was very little of my baby visible. Those hands were so gentle with his little ones.

She reminds me so much of her father, in ways of which that I think she’s totally oblivious.

Hubby just called – the two weeks’ efforts to replace the transmission have been completed – and the problem is still there. The problem isn’t the transmission after all. Our auto repair guy/tenant asked if Hubby’s checked the fuel pressure. It turns out that problem can present as transmission failure.

Poor Hubby. We were both hoping he could get back to working on his car. He has a deadline for completing it to take a car show he is desperate to be at this year. It’s VERY important to him. When I expressed my disappointment, he just said “It is what it is. I’m going to try to find a fuel pressure gauge this afternoon.”

Hubby isn’t perfect, but I’ll say one thing for him – he’s always been exceedingly responsible about taking care of his family. Even at our worst marital moments, he always made sure we were taken care of.

I do admire that about him. Among other things. His mechanical ability has always amazed me.

OMAHA, Neb. − Christian Moore hit for the cycle for Tennessee baseball in its College World Series opener against Florida State on Friday.
Moore completed the cycle with a 440-foot solo homer leading off the sixth inning, which pulled the Vols within 9-7 against the Seminoles.
The junior second baseman roped a triple to right-center field in the first inning. He crushed a double down the left-field line in the second. He blooped a single to shallow right in the fourth.
Moore is the second player in CWS history to hit for the cycle.

I mentioned earlier that Hubby found out that my transmission wasn’t the problem….the junkyard where he got the replacement tranny was a gold mine of information for his work truck problems. It would go into what he called “stupid mode” where it would just shut down while moving. Our mechanic friend and the dealership mechanics couldn’t figure out the problem.

Junk yard guy told him it was a steering alignment problem. Somehow the steering column was just slightly out of whack or something, and if Hubby took the truck to an alignment place to get everything aligned correctly, it would stop. Junk yard man had the same exact problem.

Hubby is so grateful to have a solution.

The trees, shrubs, flowers are as thick as I can remember in 21 years here. The farmers around here are having a banner year even after getting into the wet fields late. Just a Drive-By but I just heard on the US Farm Report that Firestone is laying off 119 of it’s 900 workers at it’s Bridgestone tractor tire plant in Des Moines so does this indicate a start of the recession? One more? My first granddaughter’s birthday, April 27, 2016. My wife was in Midland helping daughter find a temporary place to live before moving there so I was manning the Fort back home. At 2 AM I got the call and I was at Clear Lake Hospital by 3 AM. I went in to see DIL, my boy and of course MIL was there. After 30 minutes or so DIL was getting uncomfortably so I went to the waiting room. A little over an hour later, Boom granddaughter had arrived! DIL was in Labor for less than 2 hours and even less with the second one, almost didn’t make it to the hospital in time. FWIW; The boy still reminds his mom that she missed the big event.

And it wasn’t one big, like, wake up call for me. Uh, it was a process:

It started when I first started paying taxes. I remember working 60 to 70 hour weeks only to get 30 to 40% of my paycheck cut from me. Realistically speaking, that’s out of those 60 hours, I worked 20 of those for somebody else.
