Reposting this from Saturday:
Can Americans Still Mourn as Americans ? For the first time in more than a century, Memorial Day will be observed with a gaping hole in our national memory.
To honor the Confederate dead was as sure a declaration of victory as the Union could have mustered: to insist that these Southern boys were sons of the United States who would be mourned by their mother country was to reaffirm, by a great act of national charity, the principle for which the Northern dead had fought. In some sense, the introduction of fallen rebels to the rituals and monuments of national remembrance restored the bonds of brotherhood that secession had broken.
It seems those bonds have been forgotten, if not dissolved. Five months ago, in an all-too-common act of quiet desecration, a contractor for the Department of Defense weaved a crane through the Southern graves to lift the statue from its place; it is the only memorial ever removed from the cemetery. For the first time in more than a century, Memorial Day will be observed with a gaping hole in one section of Arlington—in one section, that is, of our national memory.
It’s Memorial Day so let’s not forget the reason for this day.
Mornin’ Gang
Well, in local news the UAW is unhappy with the outcome of the vote at the Mercedes plant in Vance Alabama and wants another vote blaming the Mercedes management of some sort of chicanery.…SO! Let’s analyze this; The vote was fair and square, the UAW lost, isn’t happy about it and is crying foul. The ONLY logical conclusion is that the UAW is Election Denying and therefore should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, thrown in jail for a Kagillion years. Never mind that NO law was broken. That Goose and Gander thingy.
A heart-rending cartoon for this day from Cox & Forkum.
John A. Lucas is a retired attorney who has tried and argued a variety of cases, including before the U. S. Supreme Court. Before entering law school at the University of Texas, he served in the Army Special Forces as an enlisted man, later graduating from the U. S. Military Academy at West Point in 1969. He is an Army Ranger who fought in Vietnam as an infantry platoon leader. He is married with five children. He and his wife now live in Virginia. John also is published at johnalucas6.substack.com.
Mr. Lucas wrote the fine, moving essay I reposted at 6:11 AM. He also wrote this column for this Memorial Day published at The Federalist.
Here is a short sketch about one such soldier whose name is carved on the Wall.
Garney Burleson was a farm boy from North Carolina. He is not famous. You will not read about him anywhere other than here. He was a member of the elite aero-rifle platoon of B Troop, 1/9 Cavalry, of the famed 1st Cavalry Division, also known as the “Bravo Blues.”
Garney was killed in action on January 28, 1971, in Binh Tuy Province, Vietnam. He was only 20 years old.
Garney is buried in the cemetery of a small country church outside of Asheville, N.C. No immediate family members are left to remember him today. No parents. No siblings. He never had any children.
47 years later Garney Burleson’s platoon leader drove to North Carolina to visit his gravesite.
Garney’s grave was not particularly well-tended. Although several others were buried there who could be identified as veterans from their headstones, the church had not made an effort to honor them on Memorial Day, neglecting even to place a small American flag on their gravesites.
From the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund:
The virtual Wall of Faces features a page dedicated to honoring and remembering every person whose name is inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. In an effort to further preserve the legacy of those who sacrificed all in Vietnam, VVMF is committed to finding a photo to go with each of the more than 58,000 names on The Wall. The Wall of Faces allows family and friends to share memories, post pictures and connect with each other.
Matt Walsh cries a few crocodile tears about the layoffs at Media Matters.
Thanks to those who fell for me. Thanks to those who were wounded for me. It is through their blood and suffering that my rights are preserved ( until a lawmaker threatens to remove them).
God bless the families who sacrificed their family members and who bear that sorrow.
Well said, Tedtam.
You can take the goat raping savage out of Iran, but you can’t remove his evil ways.
The Rooskies don’t put up with this sort of crap.
My grandfather, grandmother and great aunt all went to Hardin-Simmons College a long time ago.
“Babe” was my grandmother’s baby brother
About Texpat’s @ 5:53 AM about the 20 Texas Medal of Honor recipients. I read them all and suggest that you do the same.
God Bless those that gave all for us. I shudder to think what might have been.
Why would anybody trust these wicked fools ?
No deal. That was the message for World Health Organization (W.H.O.) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday after his proposed global pandemic treaty was rejected after two years of closed-door meetings in Geneva, Switzerland.
AP reports Roland Driece, co-chair of W.H.O.’s negotiating board for the agreement, acknowledged countries were unable to deliver an agreed proposal. W.H.O. had hoped a final draft treaty could be agreed on at its yearly meeting of health ministers starting Monday in Geneva.
and this,
Earlier this month, U.S. Republican senators wrote to the Biden administration, arguing the draft treaty focused on issues like “shredding intellectual property rights” and “supercharging the WHO.” They urged Biden not to sign off.
The UN on steroids and more power. NO THANK YOU, he says politely.
Super Dave
You showed up in the late comments of yesterday. I hope they did not besmirch your good name.
😀
I was a military brat for 17 years, My Dad was home for 5 Christmas during that time. I have a special place in my heart for the families of the airmen soldiers sailors and Marines. You see, They Also Served.
Good early afternoon, Hamsters
Indeed today is a special day to remember those who gave their all so that it now is possible for us to sit at our computers and read the history of those Americans who made it happen.
I mentioned the fish fry yesterday so here’s a picture, Bass N Bream, fries, coleslaw and hush puppies.Dang fine eating right there. My sister brought her outstanding coleslaw and also helped me fry up the fish. She battered them up to toss into the hot oil.
Did I tell you that Life is Good out here in the country? https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/t57/1/16/1f609.png
Hey, I use a milk crate for my propane tanks as well. Now, the spool for a table I’m liking.
Thanks, Mr Moderator,..or is it Mrs? 😉
Mrs. You are quite welcome.
😉
My @ 1:44 PM is Awaiting for approval. 2 links. 😉
Got my gardening done. Today’s efforts: more green beans, one tomato (a few more to come in soon), trimming the yellow leaves, and putting up some shade over some of the tubs. I really don’t have the right stuff, so I’ll just have to see if what I raised stays in place. Hubby came out with his tape measure and we determined where the trampoline frame will go. The frame came from our neighbors across the street, and Hubby and Handyman will take off the bouncy part, put on some raisers, and we’ll stretch some shade cloth over it. We figured out which part of my garden will get the benefit of the shade this summer.
After that, I cooled off before showering to remove the layer of sweat and deet, then making some egg salad for my lunch. I figured it was soft enough to eat safely. When my sutures come out, I’m getting myself a big ol’ steak.
Memphis style dry rub ribs with some deer sausage and HEB sausage be ready in about an hour. Wife has HEB Charro beans going and HEB tater salad. Neighbor friends and son and his galfriend coming over.
Oh my and I’m 10 hours away, dangit! 😉
I’ll have leftovers, c’mon!
I’ll be there in half an hour.
😀
I don’t feel much like cooking, though I have some ribs and coals. I think I’m going to pull some cooked ribs out of the freezer for Hubby.
My propane oven/smoker burner burned out a couple years ago, parts not available. I finally got around to rigging up an extra burner I had laying around, it was way easier than I figured, don’t know why I put it off so long. Love that thing, you can easily control the temps and gives a nice smoke with the wood chip pan.
Every time I see a Tunnels to Towers ad, it reminds me of all those soldiers, airmen and sailors in earlier wars who would have survived their combat injuries if we had the field medics, Evac capabilities and forward based trauma units like we have developed over the last 30 years.
It’s heartbreaking to watch some of these men with their families without limbs, burned or blinded, but at least they are alive. The wives, though, are the silent heroes in the lives of these dramatically damaged warriors. They are just amazing.
This is a very strange story and we’re not getting any answers. Additionally, no one has explained why law enforcement let one of these illegals loose after being involved in this bizarre behavior.
Reports say two Chechen men who spoke only broken English were on the property in two locations. A scuffle broke out between the colonel and Ramzan Daraev, 35, of Chicago. The Army officer fired at and killed Daraev at close range. The other Chechen was located in a vehicle elsewhere on the property. He was interviewed and, somewhat astonishingly, released by law enforcement. The FBI was called (uh-oh) and offered linguistic help.
Fox News is reporting the two Chechens are here illegally. Listen to what they say about Utilities One, which refuses to answer their phones.
The FBI wasn’t interested ? All they did was offer an interpreter…for who ? The dead guy or the one they released and is in the wind. Keystone Kops and a utility company owned by a Russian that seems to exist only online. Are U.S. military authorities in charge of security so busy with drag queen shows and critical theories they just don’t have time to check this out ?
So two barely-English-speaking Chechens — one now ventilated and deceased — here illegally, were allegedly working as subcontractors for a utility company, Utilities One, based in New Jersey. But Dareav, the dead Chechen, didn’t have any utility tools or utility identification. An international ID card in the vehicle identified him. Nor were the two men wearing utility uniforms. Law enforcement also found two Russian-language cell phones in the car and camera equipment. Little is known about the Chechen in the vehicle who was interviewed and released.
Well, the next 9/11 event will probably get its own date moniker. /spits
“We’re not getting any answers”. Well there will be NO ANSWERS until after the election, if then. Nothing to see here, move along,……. ~SPITS~
Mr. Childers gives an outstanding essay on this Memorial Day at the C&C.
SEE YA
Dang, now I’m looking at Traeger pellet grills. They have a smaller one called the Tailgater I might consider later on. Right now, I have too many other things to think about though. My daughter in Oregon has the Traeger Ranger model and loves it, but it’s a bit small for me.
My son had a Traeger but replaced it with a different pellet grill that is supposed to be better? He also has a Kamado that he uses more than the pellet grill. I’ll give him credit, he has this grilling/smoking thing figured out. I always eat good when I’m there. 😉
Attn Houston: It is hellishly hot out there.
thatisall.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former President Trump made a surprise appearance at the Libertarian Party Convention yesterday, but was met with a chorus of boos after the dozens of libertarians present realized Trump was wearing deodorant.
“Boo! He smells good! Boo!” screamed Libertarian Party member Johnna Lundqvist. “It’s very pleasant smelling, and I don’t like it! Boooo!”
and later the Libertarians finally made a decision…
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Libertarian Party has concluded its convention and nominated its latest presidential candidate: a 20-foot-tall, rainbow-colored, glass bong.
The gay, oversized marijuana smoking device edged out candidates RFK Jr., Donald Trump, and Sparklepaws the Transgender Furry to secure the coveted nomination to run for President this November.

For some reason, this guy reminded me of Katfish. RIP brother.
Uh, that’s probably him.
Pretty darn close. 🙂
